Dog named for Buddy Holly wins Westminster dog show, a first for its breed

May 9 (Reuters) - A petit basset griffon Vendeen named Buddy Holly won best of show on Tuesday in the 147th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, beating out more than 3,000 dogs from 210 breeds and varieties to claim the most prestigious such U.S. prize.

A six-year-old male from Palm Springs, California, Buddy Holly became the first of his breed to win. The dogs were bred to track hares in the Vendee department of western France.

"I never thought PBGV would do this, Janice Hayes, the dog's co-owner and handler, said after the show. "Buddy Holly is the epitome of the dog show."

Each breed produces a winner, representing the best of what artificial selection can create from the descendants of wolves.

Breed winners are separated into seven groups to determine the best of show finalists: hound, toy, non-sporting, herding, sporting, working and terrier.

There is the clanging of steel, and the ASSASSIN draws back, only to lunge viciously at the MYSTERIOUS FIGURE, striking them.

MYSTERIOUS FIGURE: Ah!

PRINCESS HEART: That voice!

The ASSASSIN leaps out the window. The MYSTERIOUS FIGURE follows, pursuing. Exit.

PRINCESS HEART: (Running to the window) Wait!

But the fighters are long gone. She notices something lying in the long strip of moonlight. She picks it up, holding it so the audience can see.

KNIGHT 1: Curse you! Who are you? You know this is the carriage of the Princess Heart of the Bridge Duchy, yet you attack?

BRIGAND 1: We knew all of that. Our orders are to kill her and crush this marriage!

BRIGAND 2: It is better for our empire to have the Bridge Duchy and the Blackjack Dominion fight each other!

BRIGAND 1 swings his sword, and KNIGHT 1 falls. BRIGAND 1 wrenches the carriage door open and seizes Princess Heart’s arm, dragging her out of the carriage. She screams.

From the distance, the sound of flapping wings. A single black feather drifts to the ground.

BRIGAND 1: Huh?

The BLACK KNIGHT cuts down KNIGHT 1 with his sword, while PRINCESS HEART fights KNIGHT 2 hand-to-hand. KNIGHT 2 pulls out a dagger and is about to stab PRINCESS HEART, but the BLACK KNIGHT leaps in front of her with a sweep of his sword. KNIGHT 2 falls.

PRINCESS HEART: (kneeling by KNIGHT 2) This is no knight of the Bridge Duchy, I am sure of it. See! The clothing is different. And this way of wearing the hair is forbidden for knights of our duchy.

BLACK KNIGHT: (to himself) As I suspected…

DOCTOR: To who do we owe this miraculous rescue? You have our gratitude in perpetuity!

The BLACK KNIGHT turns to him but does not speak.

SMITH: Crow’s feathers! Could you be… the fabled Black Knight?!

BARD: Lady, where have I seen you before?

BLACK KNIGHT: Your rafters make for uncomfortable hospitality, Count.

COUNT OF CLUBS: You! And you! (He draws his sword from his side.) You’ll die today, and my plans will continue uninterrupted!

The COUNT and BLACK KNIGHT have a furious swordfight. The BLACK KNIGHT staggers.

BLACK KNIGHT: (slumping against the leg of a table) Alas! I am wounded. I may die.

PRINCESS HEART: My Knight!

She rushes at the count, and they exchange blows. But it’s not long before the princess, too, stumbles and falls to the ground. The count advances on her. She glares at him, panting.

COUNT OF CLUBS: Why, it’s Princess Heart! My beautiful fiancée. You disappeared the day you were to arrive at this fortress. Have you been crawling in the woods with this scoundrel? What a waste.

PRINCESS HEART: He’s worth a hundred — no, a thousand of you!

COUNT OF CLUBS: (laughing) You were supposed to die, of course, and your slaying blamed on the Queen Diamond of Rummy. But that won’t work now… Why, you are lovely. What say you we wed today?

PRINCESS HEART: I will never marry you… (She starts coughing. Blood trickles out of her mouth.)

BLACK KNIGHT: Princess!

COUNT OF CLUBS: (begins to laugh) Trumps Kingdom and the Bridge Duchy and the Rummy Empire will be at war with each other, and once they are weak with fighting, I will come save them, not knowing it was I who started their quarrels in the first place!

I was going to have you killed in your bedroom, Princess, but this meddlesome knight stopped me. I had a village of Trumps Kingdom burned by soldiers in the Bridge Duchy’s uniform, but the people never asked me for help. I planned to have the Rummy Empire’s ambassador slain by supposed bandits of Trumps Kingdom, but the two of you routed my hired brigands.

But now… now!

He suddenly staggers as PRINCESS HEART PUNCHES him in the face, injuries forgotten. The BLACK KNIGHT jumps up and catches the COUNT OF CLUBS by the arms.

COUNT OF CLUBS: What is this? Trickery! Die!

PRINCESS HEART opens the doors to the room to reveal DUKE SOLITAIRE, DUCHESS COEUR, KING PIP, and TSAR DOMINO, as well as the DOCTOR, SCHOLAR, SMITH, and BARD.

BARD: Oh, there shall be songs about this, for certain.

TSAR DOMINO: This is my nephew? Nay! A criminal to be locked in the lowest dungeon and tried in the highest court!

DUKE SOLITAIRE: (struggling in DUCHESS COEUR’s grip) Let him go, sir, I will throttle him with my bare hands!

KING PIP: A village burned… we must rebuild it.

DOCTOR, SCHOLAR, SMITH: We will!

BARD: And I shall entertain you while you do.

Guards come and take the still-struggling COUNT OF CLUBS. Freed, the BLACK KNIGHT goes hastily to PRINCESS HEART’S side.

BLACK KNIGHT: Are you all right? The blood…

PRINCESS HEART: A split lip. It’s okay.

The BLACK KNIGHT helps her up. They face each other, holding hands, smiling.

BLACK KNIGHT: The attack on your carriage was not the Count’s doing. It was yours, was it not? You knew I was watching, and would come for you.

PRINCESS HEART: You have caught me out. I would have stopped you before you harmed one of them.

The DUKE SOLITAIRE and DUCHESS COEUR hurry to the pair.

DUKE SOLITAIRE: Mysterious savior, will you take off your mask? You have saved my daughter and my kingdom. Anything you ask shall be yours!

The BLACK KNIGHT hesitates. Slowly, he grips his helm and lifts it off.

DUCHESS COEUR: Why, Spade, my dear!

DUKE SOLITAIRE: Spade…?!

SPADE: You did say anything… I wish for the hand of Princess Heart.

PRINCESS HEART: (gasps) Yes! Say yes, Papa.

DUKE SOLITAIRE: (chuckles) Well, I suppose I can forgive you your youthful mistakes. Very well!

PRINCESS HEART and SPADE embrace.

Curtain.

SCENE 9

Bridge Duchy throne room again. SPADE, no longer in his knight’s armor but a prince’s raiment, stands beside the thrones, where the duke and duchess are sitting. QUEEN DIAMOND, KING PIP, the DOCTOR, SCHOLAR, SMITH, BARD, the bard, and the two Bridge Duchy KNIGHTS are there too.

Slowly, PRINCESS HEART enters. She wears her princess dress and is holding a bouquet of flowers. (Note: Does anyone have flowers?) She walks slowly to PRINCE SPADE, who is smiling. They join hands and kneel together in front of the duke and duchess.

DUKE: Ahem. Do you, Prince Spade, take Princess Heart as your wife?

PRINCE SPADE: I do.

DUKE: Do you, daugh— Princess Heart, take Prince Spade as your husband?

PRINCESS HEART: I do.

DUKE: Then, as the ruler of this duchy, I now pronounce you husband and wife.

Everyone applauds as PRINCESS HEART and PRINCE SPADE stand up and share a tender kiss.

Curtain.

The Midnight Crew Headcanons

Spades Slick . . .

- Slick is hot headed and tends to use violence as his answer for a lot of things in situations.

- He's heavily insecure about his reputation as the leader of The Midnight Crew.

- Doesn't do well under stress, but tends to overwork himself regardless of that.

- Speaks to The Shadow Disciple regularly to get tips on the future and alternate timelines and tries his best to keep him and his crew in this timeline alive.

- Tends to cheat death by doing the above HC, and for that, usually ends up pissing off TSD’s mother.

- Sn0wman and he have a ♠️ romance.

- Slick, despite better judgement, views TSD as a daughter. Even if she is considered a Timeline Holder.

- Slick struggles with connecting with new people, so he tends to keep to himself and speaks to only his close friends or crew. I guess you could refer to him as an introvert.

- His favorite kind of music are the old songs like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin. He hates the newer music people put out because it doesn’t feel like there’s any real effort to it.

Hearts Boxcars . . .

- Boxcars struggles with social anxiety disorder and has major self image issues.

- He knows his limits, and if you overstep a boundary he’ll let you know.

- Closest with Deuce, as they’re vaguely related.

- Enjoys wandering around the town at night with Deuce and Droogs, and tends to stay away from Slick.

- Usually is the one to stay away from everyone at parties. If it’s a family get together, that’s a different story. He seems so much happier with his family around. Always is the one to bring a whole lot of food for everyone and their sister to gorge on.

- Hasn’t really met TSD yet, but knows she exists and tries to be as respectful as possible considering she “watches” their crew.

- He’s aromantic-asexual.

Clubs Deuce . . .

- Is a little more outgoing than Boxcars, but not by much. He’s incredibly soft spoken and refuses to engage in conflict among the crew.

- He’s one hell of a fighter even with his size. Sometimes struggles with when to stop hurting someone at times in battle.

- A lot of people are more scared of Deuce when he gets mad compared to when Slick gets mad.

- He’s the most technologically inclined, having been given a computer by TSD.

- Enjoys My Little Pony and will wake Boxcars up in the middle of the day if he’s napping to watch it together.

- He hoards a lot of things he finds. Nothing is safe from Deuce.

- Bit of a kleptomaniac.

- He’s a hopeless romantic.

Diamonds Droog . . .

- He’s usually bored when nothing’s happening around the base. He tries to play things like solitaire, war, rummy, etc.

- Tends to make stacks of things and sorts things based off alphabetical order and color. He likes to color code things when he can as nobody else wants to organize.

- Nobody really knows where he came from or who he’s related to, but people say he’s related to someone in The Felt. He’s no spy, that’s for damn sure.

- The strongest hitter of the crew. If you piss him off? Run.

- He’s selectively mute.
