Brat #2 aka Dalia. Just your average first-generation immigrant kid who ended up being an overachiever to meet her family’s expectations, maybe thinks she’s better than everyone, enjoys good food and being indoors, runs on caffeine and no sleep, polite yet not particularly warm. This is a basic intro, will put up her stats and full bio soon but she’s basically if “I don’t love drama, drama loves me” was a person :)))
BASIC STATS
Full Name: Dalia Noor Ibrahim
Nicknames: Dali (only to select people)
Date of Birth: January 12th, 1993
Place of Birth: Parsippany, New Jersey
Ethnicity: Afro-Jamaican, Pakistani
Languages: English (native proficiency), French (bilingual proficiency)
Religion: Muslim
Western Zodiac: ☼ Capricorn | ☽ Virgo | ↑ Aries
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Relationship Status: Single
Education: Bachelor of Science Biochemistry, Master of Science in Biochemistry (New York University, 2011-2016); PhD in Epidemiology (Brown University, 2019-present)
Occupation: Doctoral Student
Moral Alignment: Chaotic Good
Myers-Briggs: INTP - The Logician
Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Enneagram: Type 3 - The Achiever
BACKGROUND
Born to immigrant parents who came from their respective countries in search of The American Dream. Her father Ameer was from Pakistan on a student visa, while her mother Jane immigrated from Jamaica as a teenager with her family.
She was their American Dream, their only child. They worked hard to provide for their little family, and had high expectations that Dalia was all too excited to live up to. She wanted to be the prodigy that they expected of her. Her parents were truly great people though, even if they pushed her quite a bit to meet the expectations they had - in their eyes, she had opportunities that they didn’t have at her age, and Dalia should take them all.
Went to NYU for her bachelor’s and master’s in Biochemistry, completed both in 5 years due to an accelerated program. Also worked for a good portion of her degree, but she knew that it was worth it for the opportunity.
Dated Nate Blackwood for 2 years, and for those 2 years everything was perfect. Dalia loved him and made space for him in her life, and he was more than supportive of her ambitions. While Dalia wouldn’t say that she could see herself marrying Nate necessarily, she envisioned her long-term plans with him in the picture.
Graduated with her master’s and wanted to explore job opportunities outside of the city, perhaps even on the West Coast. She wanted to have that talk with Nate first though, see how their relationship would work and if a move outside of the city would be compatible with his lifestyle and goals. But they never did get around to that talk, as her boyfriend of two years ghosted her and returned home. Right after Dalia accepted a lab assistant job at a hospital in Manhattan.
Bitterness and resentment clouded her judgement, which resulted in her sleeping with Weston not even a week after she and Nate ended things. Somehow, it felt like sleeping with his friend was a way to get even. Dalia hasn’t seen Weston since their rendezvous.
Continued to work in the public health and medical research field while looking into doctoral programs. Her best offer came from Brown University, and she was reluctant at first since she knew Rhode Island was where Nate had run off to. About to accept her second choice at the University of Michigan, Dalia was talked out of taking that step by her mother, with Jane reminding her daughter that she was a force to be reckoned with and she should not be deterred by an idiot who was unfortunate enough to lose her.
Dalia is in her third of four years of her program, intending to graduate with her PhD in Epidemiology. Having spent two years living near to campus, she moved out of Providence and instead chose to commute to the university from a smaller town. She knows that Nate is around, but has yet to run into him. She has no clue that Weston left New York and is now living back here either, and she is perfectly fine living in blissful ignorance.
Shares a two-bedroom apartment with fellow NYU alum Cataleya Zarrin in Arrow Point Piers. Pretty focused on working on her dissertation and research gig, sometimes needs to be reminded to relax.
MISCELLANEOUS
Is a practicing Muslim, albeit not very strictly. She doesn’t eat pork, drink alcohol, or get tattoos; but she only attends religious services during Ramadan and Eid.
Still has a connection to both her Jamaican and Pakistani roots, and visits the former every couple of years at least
Makes pretty good biryani
Still very close to her parents, tells her mother everything. If you wronged Dalia, Jane Ibrahim automatically hates you (sorry Nate you made an enemy for life)
Likes pets in theory, but cannot be trusted to take care of one
Exclusively dates wealthy men, as it’s one way to ensure that she has financial security that she and her family didn’t know growing up. Financial security that Dalia feels she deserves after working so hard all her life.
Doesn’t particularly want children, but it’s because she doesn’t want to take a break from her work to raise them
CONNECTIONS
Schoolmates - Dalia did her bachelor’s and master’s at NYU, then is doing her PhD at Brown
Neighbors - Her fellow residents of Arrow Point Piers
Fellow Newbie - Someone else who just moved to town
Trivia Buddy - She doesn’t drink, but boy does the girl love bar trivia nights

I would like to preface this by saying that I love my brother.
He is not a good person. Not in the evil way, not in the I hurt people, or I bully people kind of way, but in the - I have never critically thought about my privilege and general existence kind of way. I’ll slow down and start from the beginning.
I am Canadian but my parents are Asian, South Asian to be precise. My dad was born and raised in India while my mother is Pakistani. From there my parents made their way to the US where they met and got married. My dad studied mechanical engineering at University of Oklahoma. He was accepted into Princeton but the tuition was too high, University of Oklahoma was the only university that afforded him with a full ride scholarship. So he made do and studied. What you have to understand here is that my dad was poor like extremely poor. He used to tell us how he would steal packets of ketchup to eat because they had a high sugar content and he couldn’t afford actual food. He didn’t have a choice when it came to studying, he had to get his degree so he could find a job. If he didn’t he was a short, Indian, Muslim brown man with no family, no support system and no credentials.
My mom actually got her degree in nursing in Pakistan but because the credits did not transfer she was not a nurse in Virginia, she worked as a lab tech. Eventually my parents met and got married then had my oldest brother.
Here’s the thing, my mom’s immigration story is murky. While her “nanny visa” isn’t exactly illegal, the fact that the only “children” she was taking care of were her cousins. The rest of her family trickled in using farming visas. I’ll be frank it was definitely fraud in some way but done just carefully enough that the government was willing to overlook it. My mom’s a Canadian citizen now so I don’t have to be worried that she could be deported.
But anyway my parents met, got married and procreated twice. I have two older brothers who were born in New Jersey and have American citizenships. At this point we were poor. My dad was barely making anything with his engineering degree and my mom had two kids under the age of five, she was basically supporting the family with her job as a lab tech. Then my mom found out she was pregnant with me. My dad being a financially responsible man asked my mom to terminate the pregnancy (she was on birth control, I was very much a whoops baby) but she declined. I am not going to turn this into an anti-abortian argument, I am very much pro-choice, I was just giving context to the situation my parents were in. A few days after I was detected(?) my dad got a job offer in Alberta and accepted it. It turned out to change our lives entirely. My dad started making more and more until he was making six figures a year. This is the type of life I grew up living, moreover this is the life my brother grew up living.
Since I have two brothers, I’ll name them, the ok one will be O and the not-okay one will be U.
U has never known, or remembered financial stress. He is two years older then me so can’t remember his life in New Jersey but he can remember his life in Canada. I won’t insult him by saying his life in Canada is easy, he is lives in an Asian household and my parents are typical Asian parents. They are strict and overbearing, they meddle too much in our lives and they do not get along with each other. Growing up was stressful, my dad definitely has an untreated mental disorder that results in a violent temper and tension in the house for days on end. None of us have healthy coping mechanisms. O is going to get married in the next year, he is terrified that his wife will rely on him to be the sole breadwinner and through that he will become abusive towards her. U, well I’ll get to that. I ignore everything and avoid conflict like a sport. My eventual plan is to get my degree and fuck off and never come back. So, not the healthiest environment to say the least. But I do have to say that it affected U the most.
He became fanatical. He became obsessed with judging people. He would continuously ask me why I was, “everyone’s lawyer” for having the audacity for saying that unless we understand someone’s circumstances we cannot judge them for it. The best example of his confusingly conservative personality is the fact that he agrees with the Vietnam War.
Today we decided to watch the Chicago 7. He didn’t want to. His first complaint was that it got bad reviews, we showed him the reviews which were overwhelmingly positive (he considers himself a film expert, you can tell by the way that he uses the words “film” instead of movie and “cinematography” and “we shouldn’t focus on diversity in Hollywood, we should just pick the best actor for the job”) the truth came out he did not like the fact that it was about people fighting against the government. He agreed with the conscription and said that he would gladly give his portion of the inheritance to the Canadian military since it was his civic duty to support them, never mind that we pay taxes to support them so they really don’t need more. More and more pieces fit together. His easy spending of money, his virulent defence of conservative policies, his anti-immigration stance. He’s a piece of shit and it took me nineteen years to figure that out. He’s just genuinely a piece of shit.
And  I don’t know where it came from. No one in my family has such extreme views, we are a family of immigrants. I mean the only vaguely conservative thing we do is be rich. And before anyone comes for me I am aware of my incredible privilege. I am also aware that we embody the American Dream to the T and I am aware that the American Dream is a lie fed to us by the rich and no one becomes rich because you worked hard. You become rich because you had connections or in our case we were extremely lucky.  But U is not aware of his privilege as a wealthy person. He doesn’t seem to grasp that he didn’t make good choices, he had good choices (peep the reference), choices that allowed him to get a tutor so he could write the MCAT, choices that allowed to spend months studying and not be worried about money, choices that give him connections to med students and doctors, choices that he only got because he was rich. In fact he is so unaware of it, that it’s like he believes he deserves it. It’s like he believes that it is his God-given right to not have to pay his own tuition, his cell phone plan, his fucking life is paid for and this bitch thinks he deserves it. He spends money like it’s water, he believes transgender people are just mentally ill, he’s anti-immigration (which is hypocrisy of the highest degree, where do he think he came from? He’s darker then I am!), he’s a white posh British man in a twenty-two year old brown body.
And then I realized, he wants to be that British man, he craves it. It’s why he wants to send his future child to an English boarding school so he (the child will be a boy and named Alistair, apparently. I can’t make this shit up. I wish I was making this shit up) can become a cricket star. He is creating a fantasy, one where he isn’t in this stressful tension-filled house, one where he is the hero, the saviour, the one who is right and rational. He can’t stand the fact that he was born in the family, a family where my mother still speaks with an accent and wears traditional clothing. A family that eschews normal society conventions of being white and Christian and conservative. He hates that he can’t be one of them. And because of that he ignores the immense amount of privilege he has been given. He doesn’t believe in white privilege, believes that affirmative action is reverse racism, believes that immigrants are obligated to give up their heritage to become functioning members of society. What’s that Futurama quote, “don’t insult billionaires, you’re insulting my feelings towards being able to be a billionaire someday” (I don’t know I’ve never watched Futurama, I’ve only seen that quote in a gif). My point is, is that my brother is ashamed. He is so deeply ashamed that he repressed all of his empathy and humanity to beg at the alter of capitalism and classism. He cannot reach the inherent privilege that being white affords you so he makes up for it by being the poster child of white supremacy in other ways. And all of that makes me sad.
Because after all, I love my brother.

Trump’s Afghanistan war speech: What to watch for
Tumblr media
U.S. President Donald Trump returns a salute as he steps from Marine One to board Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, U.S., on his way back to Washington August 20, 2017. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque
WASHINGTON — After years of calling for a U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, President Trump will use a prime-time speech late Monday to lay out his long-awaited strategy for fighting America’s longest war. Trump is expected to accept the Pentagon’s recommendation to send a few thousand troops to the strife-torn country nearly 16 years after the conflict began.
The announcement caps months of frequently angry West Wing debates pitting advisers advocating deeper involvement in Afghanistan against aides warning that Trump risks getting sucked into the kind of nation-building entanglement he denounced during the 2016 campaign. It also comes after the departure of senior strategist Steve Bannon, the most forceful West Wing voice against escalating the conflict.
The president considered a range of options, from full withdrawal to significant escalation, and even one plan (which was never seriously in play) to replace troops with contractors under a “viceroy” figure.
Whatever Trump announces, the strategy will be a defining moment of his presidency. Here are some things to watch for when the president addresses the nation from Fort Myer, Va.
How many more Americans will go to war?
While Trump is expected to agree to his national security team’s recommendation for a modest escalation of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, officials declined on Monday morning to put on a number on it. And the president could also decide not to give a precise figure in his speech, focusing instead on the importance of the mission.
The United States has about 8,400 troops in Afghanistan, part of an international force roughly 13,500 strong. A few months ago, Trump authorized Defense Secretary James Mattis to deploy another 3,900, a step the retired general declined to take absent a fleshed-out strategy.
The Pentagon has been asking for “thousands” more troops since January, when Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan told Congress the conflict was at a “stalemate.”
Since George W. Bush unleashed U.S. military might against the Taliban on Oct. 7, 2001, some 2,400 Americans have died in the conflict and more than 20,000 have been wounded. Barack Obama surged tens of thousands of troops into Afghanistan in 2009 but later drew frequent criticisms from Republicans, who accused him of focusing on withdrawing U.S. forces rather than defeating the Taliban. Obama aides said their main goal was making local security forces self-sustaining in order to extricate the United States from a seemingly intractable conflict.
The potential U.S. escalation leads to two other questions. How many U.S. military contractors will go? And how many new NATO forces will join in, if any?

To do what?
The new deployments are expected to shoulder two main tasks: Shore up Afghan security forces fighting the Taliban and carry out missions targeting al-Qaida and the so-called Islamic State.
For how long?
Trump is not expected to set a target withdrawal date, effectively committing to an open-ended deployment. And Mattis told Congress in mid-June that Americans should expect a “residual force” to stay in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future.
What are Trump’s expectations for the Afghan government?
The notion of a deployment without an defined end date may alienate parts of Trump’s base, which opposes overseas missions for the purpose of nation-building.
But the president could make continued U.S. economic and military aid contingent on the Afghan government reaching some to-be-determined benchmarks for rooting out corruption and delivering much-needed services. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain, R.-Ariz., included the notion in his own proposed Afghan war strategy, which he unveiled not quite two weeks ago.

What are Trump’s expectations for the Pakistani government?
When the president huddled at Camp David on Friday with his national security team, the meeting was billed as a discussion of policy towards South Asia — not just Afghanistan.
That’s because there’s no realistic Afghan war strategy without a Pakistan component. U.S. officials have long accused Islamabad of supporting extremists like the Haqqani network, fomenting instability in Afghanistan and even targeting U.S. forces.
At the same time, Washington hasn’t found a way to get nuclear-armed Pakistan – officially a “major non-NATO ally” that gets privileged access to purchases of military hardware – to change its behavior. And U.S. officials are mindful of the risks of any policy that risks weakening the government in Islamabad.
In one of the most memorable phrases of the nearly 16-year-old war, Rep. Gary Ackerman (D.-NY) described the relationship between the two neighbors as “a shack that’s on fire” (Afghanistan) “located next to the dynamite factory” (Pakistan).
How will Trump sell the policy to America?
It’s become a cliché to call Afghanistan “the forgotten war.”
But it’s largely true. Trump and his Democratic rival for the White House, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, did not face any questions about the conflict in any of their three debates in late 2016. And national polling on the conflict is sparse after October 2015.
Using his personal twitter megaphone, the president has called for a complete withdrawal for years.
“Let’s get out of Afghanistan. Our troops are being killed by the Afghanis we train and we waste billions there. Nonsense! Rebuild the USA,” he tweeted in January 2013.
If, as expected, he chooses to deepen U.S. involvement, how will he sell the idea to his core voters, and to lawmakers who will be called upon to fund the new deployment?

How will Trump define victory (or at least success)?
“Now, we never win a war. We never win. And we don’t fight to win. We don’t fight to win,” Trump complained to the National Governors Association in late February. “So we either got to win or don’t fight it at all.”
When then-President George W. Bush announced on Oct. 7, 2001, that he was going to war in Afghanistan, he laid out key goals like rooting out al-Qaida, but he was careful not to define victory. Late that month, Bush aides expressed outrage at a New York Times article warning that Afghanistan could become a “quagmire,” and suggesting that the new conflict could become “another Vietnam.”
Nearly 16 years later, the Trump administration has been wrestling with how to define an elusive victory, or at least satisfactory success.
Inside the Trump administration and among outside experts, there’s a general consensus that America’s foremost national security goal is to prevent Afghanistan from slipping back into its pre-9/11 state as a safe haven for extremists plotting to strike at America or its allies.
But Trump himself has never spelled out what he would consider success. Monday night could be his best chance to do so.

A Session with Naiyar Saifi, Director Marketing - TCS Holding
With over 33 years of experience in the field of Marketing, Naiyar Saifi can easily say ‘been there, done that’.
A hardcore marketer since day one, Naiyar has marked his journey with the launch of consumer brands including time spent at Glaxo and Boots and the launch of the Greenstar program in Pakistan. Solely responsible for the new brand identity of UBL with its trademark swoosh and tag-line of ‘Where You Come First’, Naiyar has made a name for himself in the marketing and advertising world as an innovative pioneer focused on breathing new life into the brands with which he has worked. He led operations at Adetude – a full service Advertising and Marketing agency which introduced China Mobile’s Zong in Pakistan; then joined Silk Bank as the Head of Marketing & Public Relations to drive launch of the bank’s Credit Card Business. After decades of numerous accomplishments, NaiyarSaifi now holds the position of Director Marketing and Public Relations at TCS Holdings and has successfully revitalized the brand presence in the minds of the people of Pakistan and the Pakistani diaspora across the world.
BM: Tell us about the growth of TCS within such a short span of time. NS: When DHL came to Pakistan in 1981, they formed TCS to cater to the domestic courier business. After some time, DHL reverted to their focus on the international market and parted ways with TCS which became an independent entity in 1983. Starting domestically with from just six riders, the company grew and marked its name within the courier industry no time. We grew from just the consumer side to catering to the corporate sector and have grown phenomenally. After a lot of hard work, TCS now stands as Pakistan’s most recognizable and preferred courier, logistics and e-commerce provider; we now provide services to the corporate sector, SMEs and household customers. With a widespread network of 850+ outlets in over 380 cities, 525 satellite-tracked vehicles, a dedicated Boeing-737, a proficient team of more than 4,000 couriers, end to end supply chain advisory services and the fastest digital printing facility in the country, TCS leads the Pakistani courier and logistics industry in terms of both service and reliability.
BM: We all know about what TCS does in Pakistan, but what about abroad? NS: The document and parcel delivery service market in Pakistan has seen an exciting new development recently with the announcement of the agreement between UPS (NYSE: UPS), the world’s largest express carrier and package delivery company and TCS, Pakistan’s most recognized courier, logistics and e-commerce provider. As UPS’s Authorized Service Contractor, TCS is offering international Express services to Pakistani’s globally. With immediate effect, documents, parcels and freight from across the world on the UPS network can be collected and transported to Pakistan, to be delivered through the nation’s largest distribution network of over 850 Express Centers and more than 4000 delivery professionals with the same high quality TCS service. Similarly for exports, TCS will collect directly from individuals, all sizes of companies and organizations to handover to UPS for global distribution. Through this agreement, TCS has reaffirmed its core commitment to satisfy all logistics needs for Pakistanis wherever they may be across the world.
BM: What was your first undertaking at TCS? NS: After joining TCS the new management wanted to share with Pakistan and with the world the true scope and size of TCS and how our services touch the lives of millions of people each and every day.  For this reason, our first initiative was to develop and launch a corporate song titled ‘Laal Rang’ within just 20-25 days. This song re-associated the red color with TCS for the general public and helped re-connect them with the brand. It covered some of our key services like couriers, logistics and our key strengths like nationwide presence and our company’s face such as our couriers and vans in detail. We followed this up with the ‘We Move You Campaign’ which was launched on both print and electronic mediums and resulted in a major boost to the brand’s equity and standing in the market. Since that time, we have continued to come up with new initiatives like branded vans, social media marketing, cinema advertising etc to make the brand stand out and break the clutter in the market.
BM: What is TCS Hazir and how did you come up with such a concept? What was the reason behind it? NS: We have always aimed to standout with our ideas and focus is on delivering the best to all customers. In line with this thought, we came up with TCS Hazir.  It started off as a pickup service through which we provided customers the option to let us pick up their packages and parcels from a place and a time of their choosing 24 hours a day. Be it rain or strike, traffic jams or night, TCS Hazir was present at customer’s doorsteps with a 60 minute notice. It was a big step and as the name promised we delivered what we intended to, which earned us quite a lot of fame and positive recognition in the market. This was followed by a 60 minute delivery service as well. We started this service with big-bang success in the last Cricket World Cup when we offered fans the option to get the Pakistan team jersey delivered to an address of their choice within 60 minutes of placing the order.
Now, we have expanded this concept into a full service concierge service which will enable people to get anything done at any time across Pakistan. Be it to obtaining your favorite food, to paying your bills, to getting something you forgot at home to your office, we will pick, deliver and procure anything and everything (halal and legal) for you and take your everyday worries off your hands.
BM: How and why did you come up with the initiative of Yayvo.com? NS: As shared previously, we have put a lot of our attention towards innovation and strived towards being the first mover in different fields of business. Having seen a major opportunity in the growing potential of e-commerce in Pakistan, TCS initially launched an online shopping portal called ‘TCS Connect’. In 2015, we decided to rebrand our one-stop shopping solution as ‘Yayvo.com’; which after considerable effort and sweat has become a major success story in the Pakistani ecom industry.  For this rebranding exercise we launched a nationwide advertisement campaign telling people about the benefits of online shopping and how they can utilize Yayvo to get anything and everything they want sitting in the comforts of their home.  A purely Pakistani company, run by Pakistani’s and focused on serving Pakistani’s worldwide; Yayvo has grown to challenge international conglomerates and is now the second largest online shopping channel in the country.
BM: Tell us about your customer focus? NS: At TCS, our vision is to ‘deliver beyond customers expectations’ and one of our values is to ‘make their lives simple, easy and convenient.’ With that in mind, we don’t just work towards fulfilling customer’s requirements, we go all out to make it a WOW experience for them. For example, a customer once called in asking to order a cake for his daughter’s birthday. Rather than just getting him a cake, we helped select, purchase and deliver a customized doll-house for his daughter as a special gift from him – and the family loved it! Another example is when our courier waded through three feet of water to deliver a message to a mother from her son who was residing abroad. THAT is the TCS spirit! To do more every day and to make everything we do about the customer as a whole.
