Nightwish's Floor Jansen: "Life is short. Time is not endless"
Floor Jansen opens up on her battle with breast cancer, going solo and what we can expect from the next Nightwish album
Tumblr media
It’s Friday April 22, 2022 at Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland. Fifteen thousand Nightwish fans await a much-delayed live taste of their heroes’ ninth album, Human. :II: Nature., released as the world shut down in 2020. Anticipation is high. The stage will soon be engulfed in enough fire to obliterate a small village. Aside from a handful of dates in Finland in 2021, this is Nightwish’s first full-scale show in more than three years.
Backstage, Floor Jansen feels like death. In her stage armour she looks fearsome – a tattooed Boudica for the modern age. Such a gig wouldn’t normally faze her. Floor, 41,has been fronting metal bands since she was 16. But just now she’s come down with a virulent stomach flu at the worst possible time, and she’s wondering how the hell she’ll get through the next two hours onstage.
“It was unlike anything I’ve ever done,” she says of the stomach flu that almost derailed that post-Covid comeback. “I mean, you get sick now and then, but this was brutal. I don’t know what kind of virus I picked up, but it was a very violent one. I was up all night, and then I still had to travel from Berlin to Tampere. It was horrible.” She shrugs. “But yeah, what can you do?”
It’s not hard to see why Floor gets called a ‘powerhouse’. Part opera singer, several parts rock star – with the dynamism of both – she exudes indestructibility. If Bruce Dickinson had a daughter with Xena: Warrior Princess, it would have been Floor. But there are other sides to her: different personas that reveal a more complex, interesting picture of a ‘powerhouse’ lead singer.
There’s the animal-loving homebody. The thrillseeker. The proud vegetarian. The whiskey drinker. The metal icon with a solo pop album on the way. The Highly Sensitive Person, whose hyper-stimulated sense of the world shines through her performances. The person who, just three weeks before headlining Wembley Arena with Nightwish, underwent surgery for breast cancer.
“I’m always myself,” she summarises, simply. “So whether I run around in jeans fixing a fence, or ride my horse, or go onstage in warrior outfits… it’s all the same. It’s just a different side, as you can see.”
We meet Floor over Zoom in December, as she wrestles with dodgy wi-fi backstage in Milan. “Is it noisy for you, in the background?” she asks in perturbed Dutch tones. “It’s basically one big open box here…” Dark-eyed and slightly frazzled in a grey hoodie, Floor has a business-like streak that softens as talk turns to things like her solo music, her bandmates and the cigars she enjoys with her husband, Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl.
On another day she might have come in from feeding the horses at her rural property on Sweden’s west coast. You wouldn’t fuck with her, but you’d gladly go for a drink with her. Out on the road with Nightwish, there’s a decent amount of the latter. The band “wobble” around Christmas markets drinking glühwein. They rate vegetarian food in Indian restaurants as part of a longstanding curry club. The shows themselves have been jubilant affairs.
“Last night we were surprised with some bottles of champagne,” she grins, “which we then drank, and became very happy…”
It’s all so far removed from lingering notions of Nightwish as some sort of dictatorship or soap opera, with singers driven away by its founder’s maniacal demands. They seem like friends – as in, actual friends.
“It’s absolute genuine fun,” she nods. “We’ve always had that. And there are always ups and downs; it’s like a big marriage. But we’ve been longing for this tour a lot. Especially after the pandemic, we don’t take it for granted at all.”
For Floor, the isolation of lockdown reinforced her ties to the band, but it also kickstarted her solo work. She’d begun to think of it in 2019, following an appearance on Dutch TV show Beste Zangers (‘Best Singers’), but she was still very much a band person, with a new Nightwish album cycle around the corner. Come March 2020, for the first time in her career, she found herself separated from that group mentality.
She spent time with her husband and daughter, now five. She grew vegetables and looked after her horses, cats and enormous Irish wolfhound. She worked on her online profile, communicating with her fans on a regular, down-to-earth level. At the same time, she began working with collaborators on solo material. An alternative, poppier sound started to brew.
In spring 2022 she appeared on Germany’s Beste Zangers equivalent, Sing Meinen Song, for which she sang in German (one of the four languages she speaks in addition to Dutch, English and Swedish). Gradually, a standalone Floor Jansen was evolving.
“My desire from the get-go was to find a sound that fits with me, not something created around me. But how do you do that? So I used up a large part of the pandemic in a trial-and-error search for this sound.”
It wasn’t easy. Ten years of bringing Tuomas Holopainen’s visions to life had left her with phenomenal vocal skills, but limited songwriting practice. Her first ideas, she says, “weren’t that great”.
“I’ve done it [songwriting], but I haven’t been doing much in the last 10 years,” she admits. “Plus I’m in a band with someone like Tuomas. It makes me feel very small, like, ‘What do I have to add to a world full of music?’ So from that insecurity I had to find my way and accept that I am more limited, and that I have different ideas.”
Teaming up with Dutch producer Gordon Groothedde (Snoop Dogg; Katie Melua; Floor’s previous band, After Forever) was a turning point. The first song they wrote together was Fire. A darkly atmospheric, orchestral swirl of intelligent modern pop, with the grandeur of Florence & The Machine’s cover of 1986 dance hit You’ve Got The Love, it ignited Floor’s confidence as a creator in her own right.
“I have a really hard time with love songs,” she says. “I know the majority of pop music is about love songs, and that’s also why I find it boring to listen to. So I wanted to create something that still has a message.”
Accordingly, her solo album, Paragon, shuns frothy clichés in favour of meatier subjects. Fire is about returning to life after lockdown. One song, Invincible, was written for the injured war veterans at Prince Harry’s Invictus Games – originally planned to take place in 2020 in the Hague until the pandemic got in the way.
“It’s inspired by the idea of being physically or mentally wounded, after you’ve just given everything you have,” she explains, “and something that’s left of you has to pick up life, and recover from something that you never really wanted to recover from. I want to raise awareness of the fact that this happens so incredibly often, but also to empower them. Like, ‘You already went through Hell, now you’re on your way back, you are invincible.’”
Tumblr media
It’s hard to hear this story now without thinking of Floor’s recent health issues. Diagnosed in October 2022 at a routine mammogram screening, her breast cancer came as a total shock – two weeks before Nightwish were due to fly to South America.
“They [the doctors] said, ‘We want you to come back.’ And the thing I thought, in my naïve brain, was, ‘Oh, they fucked up something with the pictures.’ Never, ‘Oh, they found something.’” She shakes her head. “Not a single moment. Until I was there.”
Surgery was planned for the day after they came home. Until then, she says, the intense business of touring Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico proved a good distraction. The pace of it all was brutal but helpful, and reading similar stories from her fans made her feel less alone – “But at the same time, it’s an overwhelming awareness of how many people actually got this fucking disease."
“I put my emotions into the music,” she reasons, “and also had really wonderful conversations within the band, crew, management, everyone has really been there for me. It’s very tough to do it all that fast, but at the same time it helped because I didn’t have to walk around with thoughts of it too long. Because as soon as you know you have a tumour in your body, the only thing you can think of is ‘get it out’. The whole mental aspect of a cancer diagnosis is shit.”
Back at home, she had three weeks after her operation before heading out in Europe and the UK. Scarred, bruised and exhausted, she was grateful for the support of her family.
“Jesus, how I underestimated it,” she half-laughs, of the recovery process. “I was jet-lagged, I barely slept for nights after the surgery because my system was completely upside-down, you get morphine… So everyone’s been really having my back in this.”
Just a couple of days before the Wembley gig, she learned that the operation was successful. It was both a relief and a wake-up call. In Sweden, mammogram screenings start for women at the age of 40. In the Netherlands, her birthplace –and in the UK – it’s 50. Now looked up to by many, as a public figure as well as a musician, she’s determined to persuade more women to go for their scans.
“On a purely personal level it’s a bit weird, because I’m just me,” she says, of her role-model status. “But from this position, I have the power to make a difference every now and then. I wanted to make sure it has this function by saying, ‘Go and get your mammogram done.’ If I had stayed in the Netherlands, this entire thing would have gone undetected. It was so small when they took it out, but it was growing, you know? I’m very lucky.”
Cancer casts a pervasive shadow, even when it’s caught quickly. For Floor, who (when we speak to her) still has three weeks of radiation therapy to complete, it’s realigned her priorities. “It’s not like I think ‘I’m gonna die’ all the time,” she explains, “but I realise how life is short. Time is not endless. We have it now.”
To that end, Floor is making the most of 2023. After her radiotherapy is finally over, she’ll join Nightwish for 70000Tons Of Metal in the Bahamas. Festival shows will follow. In the summer the band will head to the Röskö campsite in Kitee, Finland, to record the next Nightwish album (which will be released at some point in 2024).
Part three of a trilogy that began with Endless Forms Most Beautiful and continued through Human. :II: Nature., the new album will return to themes concerning our planet and our mortality. Sonically, Floor suggests, we can expect aheavy palette.
“I would say it’s a pretty heavy album,” she muses, “but once again, it’s the multicolour diversity that is Nightwish. It’s all there. It’s going to once again take you by the hand through beautiful stories – whether they are stories from this Earth or stories about this Earth. They’re beautiful.”
Creatively, Nightwish is still Tuomas’s brainchild, though there’s a sense of collaboration around this record. Armed with his demos, the band have been working up different parts and exchanging ideas on tour – in hotel rooms and dressing rooms across the world. For Floor, this has been a happy arrangement.
“I think Tuomas has a unique view on the world and has a unique way of putting that into words,” she says, “and I think he’s outdone himself on that end once again. And also visually, the ideas that are bubbling are going to be of a next level. So yeah, there’s lots to look forward to.”
Meanwhile, along with the release of Paragon, she has solo gigs planned in Europe. “And of course it would be wonderful to go to the UK,” she adds, “we are working on that as well.”
If all goes to plan, Floor Jansen could be a name that reaches well beyond metal circles – paving the way for a new kind of pop star with a darker heart. Once again the ‘powerhouse’ label feels apt, with all the truths and misconceptions that come with it.
“Power is often connected to, especially women…” she searches for the words, “…it’s like, ‘powerful women are bitches’, you know? Maybe that’s the misconception of the century. But a powerful woman is also a woman who is intouch withher emotions, and one who can have absolute soft sides and embrace them. The idea that high sensitivity would be a weakness? That is actually the absolute misperception.
“And that goes for men, too: for men to be in touch with their feelings and to be able to communicate them… that is a bigger strength than [makes growling, macho noise]. That’s going to bring us a whole lot further.”
Between travels, Floor will recharge at home in the Swedish countryside. On cold evenings, she and Hannes sometimes retreat to their grillhouse, light the fire and relax over single malts and a cigar – things that bonded them when they first met on tour with Iced Earth. Small connections between worlds.
“I can say that my happiest place is home, but that’s not true because after half a year I’ll claw up the walls,” she laughs. “I can say it’s on tour, but after a month I really want to go home. I can say it’s onstage, but then putting my daughter to bed is equally amazing at times. The ultimate thing is to have the luxury of both.”

remember? (an ode to dating in your 20s)
remember when you were 22 and you had that 14-hr marathon date with that 31 yr old? you went from coffee to the norton simon museum to dinner (your one and only time at Pine & Crane), then you went to walk the lake in the evening and decided while sitting in the dark on a park bench to go catch the last showing of Blade Runner 2049 so the night wouldn't end. he kissed you goodnight at your car. you weren’t impressed with the movie but you were impressed by his knowledge of plants in norton simon’s garden. you were impressed by his vintage volvo and bachelor pad apartment with beautiful shelves of organized records. he said he taught modular synth workshops in amsterdam and berlin and that sounded cool though you didn’t know what that meant. that was the first DJ you dated.
remember the first time you went on a date with someone who didn’t have a car and driving back to pasadena with him in the passenger seat you thought to yourself, what the fuck am i doing i don’t want him coming home with me.... do i have to drive him home?!?!
remember the time you showed up at the indian restaurant in Downtown and he was already sitting at the table, so it wasn’t until an hour and a half of conversation later when he stood up from the table that you realized you were taller than him?
remember that date you offered to split the bill just to be polite but really didn’t want to because this guy had spent too long talking about his research work on fruit flies? a couple days later he texted you a picture of himself in middle school with an eyebrow piercing, so you ghosted him. and he called you out for ghosting but you were too chicken to reply, and since then you’ve not done it again.
remember why driving by that block of his studios on the corner of 15th made you tear up after a whole year had passed? the flashbacks of the sunsets from those windows and the echo of your voices against the wood floors, yoga on the stage and the bathtub with gold feet surrounded by brick walls.
remember when you were 24 and you spent a couple weeks texting and exchanging silly photos and he even drunk called you on new years eve and made you giggle? he drove an hour and a half to finally meet you, but then you learned he didn’t smoke weed (asthma) and he learned that you don’t drink (allergic), and it was over like that.
remember the time you thought things were going well with the one you had no doubts about, and then on a saturday in September that you two had plans to go to the beach he comes over and cries on your bed and dumps you? and you ask, did you bring my things? he did, most of it in a brown paper bag, and your toothbrush he had just said he liked to see at his place was sitting bristle faced down on your sandals.
remember the time you said, no more white guys, and then you went on to date more white guys?
remember that day you were anxious about meeting your new boyfriend’s friends so you put a tab of acid on your tongue before driving to Matsuhisa? the words on the menu were wiggling. you ate the most expensive sushi dinner you’ve ever eaten and met that group for the first time having no clue who they were as the fans came rushing toward your circle holding fan art.
remember the time you were 25 on your couch watching a Netflix movie about Russian conspiracies and there was zero romance in the air but this guy turned and asked to kiss you? you didn’t want to ghost him, so you said instead that you weren’t ready to date.
remember the night you returned to that house for the first time in two years and it was awkward and nostalgic? the drive was only 9 minutes instead of 30, the living room felt the same. you talked together like old friends about recent heartbreaks and lessons and past friends and fallouts. and you smiled when he said starting over is the best because not knowing what’s next is fun.
remember the time you were 27 and swore never another DJ, and then immediately started dating another DJ?
remember the time you both agreed to be just friends and then immediately weren’t just friends? he put his jacket on your shoulders at that house party and shared a bite of chocolate pie. the line for the bathroom was too long so you drove up the hills back to his house and tea turned into a night over and a night over turned into hours over the phone and late nights falling asleep on the studio couch while he tracked bass, walks in the hills and acai bowls in bed and gigs on weekday nights at ETA and lodge room. and now you're not more than friends or friends at all, but you own a pair of pink Nikes from that store on Melrose that he liked.
remember the time you swore no more broke depressed self-proclaimed creative geniuses, so the first date you agree to is this west side guy who grows his own garden and just bought a house in the hills? but then at this fancy rooftop overlooking the beach he jokes about his chronic depression and secret desire to quit the label so he can write fiction. a week later he sends you his competition submissions to read, and you know from the feeling in your stomach, that’s enough of that.
remember the song that reminds you of a winding afternoon drive against desert wind?
remember the time you were 23 and that aries you planned a dinner party with loved you like hell but gave you hell too, and you realized quickly that loving like hell wasn’t enough? that loving his potential and loving his work and loving his cats and his roommate his incense his alien stories the way he held you and his wild pure smile wasn’t enough to stay. that was the first time you felt real heartbreak. (and the last time you dated an aries.)
remember every heartbreak after that one felt a little familiar, but each had its own particular flavor? there was the sour one, but you like sour, how it tickles your tongue. then there was the salty one, as if an entire bowl of ramen broth mixed with months and months of tears, turned cold. one was the kind of bitter that makes your jaw burn with regret. and one barely tasted like anything at all. the peculiar pleasure is that the flavors change as seasons turn. just like they say in those candy commercials, sour became sweet. and salty became an occasional craving the way you yearn for a bag of Vickies on random summer days. bland became comfort. and bitter? bitter became medicine like the herbs you sip to drain fire.
and the ones that you can still taste that were once grand painful stories or forever love and those poignant moments that have become buds on your tongue and the frequencies between joy and suffering that have moved through you slow and fast are merely words in this ode now.

Step by Step Guide to Make Delicious Sushi at Home
Tumblr media
If you are a food enthusiast who loves cooking, and trying new cuisines and dishes every day you have come to the right place. The popularity of the world famous Asian cuisine has reached heights. The flavours, methods of cooking and the ingredients used to make dishes of the Asian cuisine catches every foodie’s eye. A chef or a person who loves spending time in the kitchen trying new recipes, admires the uniqueness of each dish. The huge variety and combinations used to make dishes from the Asian cuisine make them irreplaceable.
The key to make any dish is knowing its ingredients and the step by step recipe. Get authentic, traditional Asian ingredients from Spice Village, an Asian supermarket in Germany and follow the step by step recipe mentioned below to make one of the most famous Asian dishes, Sushi. This delicious Japanese dish is famous all around the world and can be found at various restaurants but nothing tastes better than a home cooked meal.
Sushi is a seafood and rice dish staple to one of the richest cuisines found under the Asian cuisine bracket. Japanese cuisine is known and admired for tangy and vinegary dishes. Sushi is made using cooked rice in vinegar, veggies, eggs or seafood garnishes and is served cold. From mild spicy to super spicy the flavour of sushi is highly determined by the ingredients used to make it. The hand technique used to make sushi is called Nigiri-zushi. The outer layering of the rice is a sheet of seaweed and the famous spread used is wasabi.
Over the years people of Japan have used various different combinations of fillings and methods of preparation to make 5 main types of sushi rolls. Namely these types are
Nigiri: Sushi rice with raw fish topping
Sashimi: No rice just raw fish rolled
Maki: Rice filled with seafood, eggs, or veggies     wrapped in seaweed
Uramaki: Filling wrapped in seaweed and then the rice     on the top
Temaki: A cone shaped, hand rolled sushi
The making of a sushi roll is a rather satisfying process performed with utmost precision and perfection. Experts spend many hours of their lives perfecting the art of making a sushi roll. So don’t be disappointed if you cannot perfect it on the first try but it will surely look and taste better eventually with practice.
Spice Village supermarket has taken over the Asian market in Berlin by providing premium quality Indian and Asian groceries, ingredients and snackables at super affordable and reasonable prices. Making a market that has helped people living in Germany make their home a multi cuisine friendly one, Spice Village is winning hearts.
Mentioned below is an easy beginner level recipe of how to make Japanese Sushi at home:
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 35 minutes
Total time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
Sushi rice or sticky rice
Seaweed sheet
Dark Vinegar or sushi vinegar
Soy sauce
Sugar
White sesame seeds
Filing options:
Raw tuna
Raw salmon
Avocado
Cucumber
Prawns
Tuna mixed with mayo
Vegetables
For this recipe let us try a simple vegetarian sushi recipe. You can use any vegetables you want.
Instructions:
Thinly slice your veggies like carrots, cucumbers, avocados, etc.
add salt to the vegetables and set aside
Take a mixing bowl and add vinegar, white sesame seeds, sugar and cooked rice
Carefully pick and place one seaweed sheet on a non sticky surface like cling wrap
Spread rice mixture evenly on the seaweed sheet leaving out the edges
Place each strip of vegetable on the rice one by one
Avoid overcrowding the vegetables
Roll the mixture gently and tightly in the sheet
Once through with rolling, without applying pressure use a sharp knife to cut the roll
Serve with wasabi, or soy sauce as dip.
Sushi is best served cold and enjoyed thoroughly when raw fish is used. The flavour of raw fish takes time to develop but once you start liking the taste there is no going back. Sushi is the perfect dinner or lunch dish to serve with some other dishes too.
Asian cuisine dishes are all very unique and delicious and perfect to serve to leave your guests in awe. The method of cooking most Asian dishes requires time and a lot of effort which make them even more tempting to eat. The blend of spices and ingredients used to make dishes in the Asian cuisine along with the method of preparation used makes these dishes truly a chef’s delight. Pairing Asian dishes with sides, other main course dishes and beverages is also very important. To reach every corner of a person’s palette, one has to make the best possible combination which becomes easier when it comes to the Asian cuisine
thanks to the wide range of edibles and authentic ingredients from supermarkets like Spice Village in Germany.

Paneer is a very important ingredient in Indian cooking. Having a paneer dish any night is like a mini luxury for the stomach and taste buds. Indian paneer dishes also have a huge variety, some are gravy dishes served with rice and chapati, some are dry vegetable dishes made using paneer and other veggies and served with chapatis where as paneer is also served barbequed or roasted with veggies as starters, or snacks or appetisers. All of these dishes have a very unique and distinctive purpose and taste. They fill your stomach differently and are paired with different sides every time. Enjoy paneer dishes along with other Indian foods in Berlin at Dosa and More restaurant.
There are two major paneer dishes that are served at Dosa and More, Palak paneer with basmati rice and Paneer butter masala with basmati rice. In this blog we will talk about both these dishes along with why they are served with basmati rice.
1.      Paneer Butter Masala: A dish famous and loved by the children and those with a liking of something subtle and sweet. Paneer butter masala has a variety of ingredients, spices and herbs in it and is consumed with freshly made delicious basmati rice. It takes approximately 50 minutes to make and has ingredients like kasuri methi, garam masala, cream, cashews, cloves, cinnamon, ginger and garlic, and various other Indian spices.
2.      Palak paneer: Palak paneer is a dish made using one of the healthiest green leafy vegetables, palak or spinach and plant protein rice, paneer. Palak paneer is consumed heavily during the winter or cold months in India but can be consumed any time of the year at Dosa and More, the best Indian restaurant. The main two ingredients of this dish are spinach and paneer but there are also various other herbs and spices used. It takes nearly 45 minutes to make this dish with ingredients like ginger garlic, cashews, cream, paneer, spinach, garam masala etc. Also served with basmati rice of special corn flour chapatis called missi roti.
The main reason why basmati rice is served with both these dishes at Dosa and More, is because the strained, separated and delicious rice grains help enhance the taste, aroma and flavours of the rice and the gravy dish. Visit Dosa and More on your next day to dine out and enjoy these two amazing meals at very reasonable and pocket friendly prices. Along with these there are various other extremely delicious, healthy and filling meals which can be consumed at Dosa and More or can be ordered online for home delivery in Berlin, any time of the day. FAVORITE MOVIE LOVE STORIES
THANKS FOR THE TAG: @superkingofpriderock
Belle and Beast (Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, 1946)
Tumblr media
Since i was a kid, Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite western european fairy tale. I relate at the same to the Beast’s desire to be accepted by the society that fears and looks down his appearance and to Belle’s mixture of fear, curiosity and fascination by the hybrid anthropomorfic creature. And with their great chemistry, the actors Josette Day and Jean Marais really captured those feelings in this classic adaptation directed by Jean Cocteaus
Damiel and Marion (Wings of Desire, 1987)
Tumblr media
A 1987 film by Wim Wenders originally called Der Himmel über Berlin (lit: ‘The Heavens Above Berlin’).The film depicts two angels, Damiel and Cassiel, wandering in Cold War era Berlin and listening to the thoughts of humans. Among those humans are an old man looking for the now-destroyed Potsdamer Platz and recalling the good times he used to have there; Peter Falk As Himself; and Marion, a lonely French trapezist desperately looking for a purpose in life.  The angels don’t directly intervene in human existence but sometimes give comfort to humans who need it, like a woman in labor, or a suicidal man on a tram, or a motorcyclist who is dying in the street after he was struck by a car. However, Damiel yearns to be human himself and to experience life as a mortal does. Eventually he falls in love with Marion, the trapeze artist, and has to make a difficult choice: to become human himself in order to be with her, leaving Heaven.
Queen Fantaghirò and King Romualdo (Fantaghirò/The Cave of the Golden Rose franchise, 1991-96)
Tumblr media
Fantaghirò (known in the english speaking world as The Cave of the Golden Rose) is a series of five television films produced in Italy by Lamberto Bava (Mario Bava’s son), telling the adventures of Fantaghirò, the youngest of three princess sisters, who traines to become a brave warrior as a way to get free of the sexist restrictions imposed at her life by her father. Her kingdom has been at war with a neighbor kingdom for years, and one day the rencently crowned young adversary king, Romualdo, decides to end the war by personally challenging the best champion of Fantaghirò’s kingdom. Fantaghirò, disguised as man, presents herself as this champion, and their love story begins when Romualdo falls in love with the beauty of her eyes. What’s interesting about this couple is how their personalitys complement each other: Fantaghirò with a more combative strong temper, and Romualdo with a more sweet and calm temper.
Marianne Danielle and Doctor Van Helsing (The Brides of Dracula, 1960)
Tumblr media
While watching Hammer Horror’s Brides of Dracula, i finded adorable how Doctor Van Helsing cares for Marianne Danielle (whom he befriends while arriving at Transilvania), how he wants to protect her and respects her feelings, to the point of trying contain his sorrow when she announces her engagement with Baron Meinster. I always imagine that when he defeated the Baron (who is revealed to be a vampire), and flee the wind mill with Marianne, he declared his feelings, she reciprocated, he teached her how to fight vampires, they married and became a battle couple searching to purge the world of the vampires. This is a pairing who deservers more love, fanart and fanfiction.
Fininha and Clécio (Tatuagem, 2013)
Tumblr media
Tatuagem (Tattoo) is a movie set in the late 1970s, during the period of the Brazilian Civil-Military Dictatorship, that tells the love story between Fininha, an young soldier, and Clécio, an actor and playwrighter who produces satirical plays for a underground theater called Chão de Estrelas (Floor of Stars). Their romance is one of the most sweetest ever captured on film, but we also feel a certain unease that the fact of Fininha being at the service of the military who persecutes the theater artists will break the couple apart at any moment…
Karaba and Kirikou (Kirikou and the Sorceress, 1998)
Tumblr media
Kirikou and the Sorceress is a 1998 French animated film, directed by Michel Ocelot, loosely based on a West African fairy tale.  It tells the story of a tiny baby boy, named Kirikou, who is born in a spectacular way (all by himself, without effort of his mother nor outside help) and can speak and walk immediately after being born. After a couple of questions, he learns that a wicked sorceress, Karaba, has cursed the village and devoured all the men and boys, except his uncle, who is on his way to fight the sorceress. He tricks the sorceress, saves his uncle as well as the children of the village (twice!!), brings the water back to the dried-up spring and, among other things, discovers the sorceress’ true motivations: Karaba is evil because of all the suffering she went through at the hands of men, including a very subtly implied rape. All the bad things that she allegedly had done are ultimately proved to be false. She does hate everyone, but she gets better. Despite being a baby, Kirikou asks Karaba in marriage when she pulls a Heel–Face Turn, saying that he doesn’t like little girls. She doesn’t accept, of course, but then her kiss turns him into a handsome young man.
Nina Shah and Lisa MacKinlay (Nina’s Heavenly Delights, 2006)
Tumblr media
Nina’s Heavenly Delights is a Rom Com about a cooking contest,  directed by Pratibha Parmar. The death of her father Mohan brings prodigal daughter, Scot with Indian ancestry Nina (Shelley Conn) home again to Glasgow, her mother, siblings - and the family restaurant, “The Taj”. Being able to keep the latter now hinges on the cooking skills Nina learned at her father‘s knees. In the “Best of The West Curry Competition” she will have to face the former fiancé she left at the altar, Sanjay. In this competition, she will count with the partnership of Lisa, who owns half of the restaurant since Mohan’s death and already seems to be very much part of Nina’s family. And in the proccess, Lisa also becomes a part of Nina’s heart…
Lady and Tramp (Lady and the Tramp, 1955)
Tumblr media
I grew up watching VHSs of the old Disney 2-D Animated movies over, and over, and over. And a thing that i find funny is that most people tend to quote movies from the 1990s Disney Renaissance as when Disney Couples started to met each other first instead of fall in love at first sight, bu when we make a retrospective, in actuality it was Lady and Tramp who started the trend. First they met at Lady’s house and have a verbal fight due to diverging points of view about humans, them they encounter each other again at the streets when she flees from Aunt Sarah, and they walk trough the zoo to unleash Ladys muzzle, Tramp takes her to dinner at Tonys (wich us gives Bella Notte, one of the most romantic scenes in movie history)… every step that a real couple takes to meet each other is taken by Lady and Tramp.
Orfeo x Eurydice (Black Orpheus, 1959)
Tumblr media
Black Orpheus is a 1959 film, a French production shot in Brazil and in the Portuguese language. It is a retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set in Rio during Carnaval. Orfeo is a trolley conductor who moonlights as a dancer in a samba school. He is engaged to be married to the gorgeous and passionate Mira, but doesn’t seem too enthused about it. On his trolley car, he meets Eurydice, who has arrived in Rio from the countryside because she is being chased by a mysterious man who she thinks is trying to kill her. Orfeo and Eurydice fall in love, but the strange man—Death himself—is still stalking her.

A European Summer’s Tale
Contrary to popular rumors, I’m neither dead nor did I join a white nationalist cult; I merely took my own advice and ventured outside to bask in the IRL interracialist scenery of contemporary Europe in summer. Why watch Blacked when amazing amateur content is happening right downtown?
This post will be kind of a random recollection of my impressions from the last two months. To put this into context, you have to know that the town I live in was pretty much 99% white European just a decade ago. Aside from a smattering of Indian exchange students and token Asian restaurant owners, there wasn’t much going on in terms of diversity. This changed dramatically with the refugee crisis of 2015 and has been steadily ratcheting up ever since. What I saw was a result of only a few years of notable immigration; keep this in mind to understand the allure of what’s going on.
Tumblr media
One thing that amused me over and over again (and I hope this doesn’t feed into too many cheesy stereotypes, but it’s just the reality in the streets) is how the kinds of hot Euro summers that we’re bound to experience more regularly due to global warming really do cement the new pecking order: so many times I saw a sweaty and heat-oppressed white guy and a completely chillaxed African man at a pedestrian light or near a sidewalk. The contrast was so striking. And if I’m seeing it, you can bet that women are taking notice as well. There’s a new kind of alpha male in town and he’s definitely not white, lol.
Speaking of women, while I obviously saw a number of interracial couples, something else caught my attention: larger groups of young African and Arab men and white women roaming around. For the first few years post-2015, I mostly saw these immigrant men walking around among themselves; I guess the lack of language and cultural communication skills made it hard for them to make white friends.
This has now changed and I suppose white girls have figured out that if you want to have a fun summer, you best stick with the Black boys. You can all imagine in your dirty little minds where that will inevitably lead. I’m not sure what young white men are doing in summer nowadays; maybe they’re unlocking legendary skins in Fortnite or something. It’s so nice when everyone is having fun, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
And I do definitely want to mention all the Black and Muslim women with baby strollers. Sheesh, man. It’s not exactly scientific to extrapolate demographic data from what you see in the streets, but I’m guessing at least a quarter to a third of the upcoming generation is going to be non-white just by virtue of differential birth rates. If you’re still arguing over whether Europe should be white or not, you’ve kinda missed the train going out of the station. This matter is settled.
It’s funny; you probably have to be either a white nationalist or a conscious interracialist to appreciate the magnitude of what’s going on. And that’s another point I want to make: the wider debate over this issue has all but disappeared. Right-wingers are still harping on about it, but everyone else is enamored with Greta and climate change. The average person has seemingly accepted that Europe will be a big melting pot and continue to mix it up from here on out, and has thus moved on to discuss other matters. I didn’t think the transition would be that smooth, but hey, I’ll take the freebie.
Tumblr media
And now for some bonus gonzo journalism. A few months ago I made a post about a mall in Berlin that apparently attracts a curious mix of young immigrant men and German girls who are there for the teenage mischief and hedonism. As fate would have it, I was in Berlin in early August; and while my travel group wanted to go stare at boring tourist traps, I knew I had to go check out this place. So I did.
When I arrived at Eastgate Mall, I didn’t find any interracial debauchery, but I did see lots and lots of police. Being a curious and inoffensive white male, I approached one of them to inquire about the situation: I had read in the paper that this was a hotspot of crime and degeneracy, but it looked awfully quiet now? He told me that the young’ins stayed away while they were on guard duty and were probably hanging out in the parks around the neighborhood. Thank you, officer, and say no more: I was on my way to investigate.
It didn’t take me long to hit pay dirt. Now if you’re pushing 30 like me, maybe you remember how it was in high school: precocious girls smoking and cavorting outside the school yard with edgy whitebois in baggy pants. The precocious girl crowd was still there alright, but they replaced the imposters with the real deal. Lots of cigarettes and booze (I think I smelled pot as well), some kind of Arab rap booming in the background, one couple making out, everyone else caught up in hormonal tension. I kept my distance because this was not my place to interfere and, to be honest, I didn’t feel like getting beat up by a territorial 16-year-old out to impress the girls, but the fairy tale was real; and even though I wasn’t exactly part of it, I still came away from the experience with a smile.
It’s 2019 and teenage Euro girls think Black and Muslim boys are status symbols to chase after, confirmed by reality. That’s the thought I want to leave you with. Summer isn’t quite over yet, you know; you could head out and confirm this social dynamic for yourself. It’s worth your time, believe me.

Some other questions for when it's not too late where you are: 42, 45 and 46?
42: Which was the best book you had to read in school?
I remember all of the required reading in school to be uniformly awful, but I did enjoy A Tale of Two Cities because I was able to work Lord of the Rings jokes into all of my essays, so I’ll go with that. In my non-required reading time I was deeply obsessed with LOTR and busily reading as many Old English epics as I could get my hands on, as well as Tom Shippey’s analyses of Tolkien. I also had a deep and abiding affection for Joanne Harris’s Chocolat, which I read continuously off and on throughout high school because I loved the writing and the way the story made me feel.
45: What is your favorite thing to eat when you read?
I don’t usually eat and read at the same time, but when I was in Berlin and taking the train all of the time, I often had a butterhefezopf and a hot chocolate or a mocha for breakfast, eaten quickly so I could get to whatever book I happened to be reading at the time. I used to get through three books a week on my commute in Berlin. No more of that; now I live in California (sigh) and have to drive myself.
46: What is your favorite thing to drink when you read?
Tea! Coffee is for writing, tea is for reading. I prefer Barry’s Tea (an Irish blend) with a glug of honey and a glug of milk. It reminds me a bit of the Indian tea I used to get in Berlin, which I have never been able to find again, anywhere, even in other Indian restaurants.

Oh how the laziness has taken over. My school motivation has completely disappeared and the only thing keeping me going is the fact that the work I have to do are group works. I am allowing myself pass classes with minimum effort right now.
On the week after my birthday party my Finnish friends were in Berlin. I was at school on one day of that week. We drank 4 days in a row (okay I had to take one chill day in between because I had the throw up kind of hangover). We went to some bars and Mauerpark flea market on Sunday.
The next Monday I had an intervietw for an internship in Berlin. I was stressing over the interview for the whole night and got only 1 hour of sleep. I felt like a shaking zombie. Nevertheless, the interview went alright in my opinion. They made me speak some German and wanted to hear why I applied for the position. That’s basically all they asked me. They promised to let me know their decision by the end of the week but so far I have heard nothing from them (now it is Monday again and exactly 1 week has passed). That is alright because I also got a job offer from Finland and I am pretty sure I am gonna accept it no matter what. The tasks and salary are too tempting and unfortunately outweigh Berlin. I also got another interview for an internship in Berlin and even though I have basically made up my mind, I am gonna do the (phone) interview for practice.
Last Thursday me and my friends were at Escape room. It was a birthday gift I recieved from them and it was so much fun! I have never been to an Escape room before so I had no idea what to expect. We took one called “Puppeteer” and the idea was to escape from a puppeteers workroom before he makes us into puppets. We had a creepy ass robot baby, quietly saying “take me with you, take me with you...” that we had to carry from a room to another. We did so well and only needed “1,5 hints” from the game master. And even got 2 spare minutes in the end! I definitely want to try this game again.
Afterwards we went out for a couple of drinks and to analyze our game. Suddenly we got the best idea ever: we are going on a road trip in February, after exams! It didn’t take long and suddenly we already had a route planned, From Barcelona to Montpellier, from there to Lyon and ending at Genf. I have been wanting go on a such adventure for ages and now I can’t wait until the exams are over!
On Friday me and a friend went spontaneously for drinks to an Indian restaurant called Amar. I found my new favorite drink “Touch down”. One thing I love about Berlin that the cocktails are often so cheap and good and you can get them from normal restaurants. It feels kinda luxurious but at the same time it only costs around 4 euros each. Also, they were super strong and only a few cocktails got us drunk and talk about deep stuff. I wish I had one right now...
On Saturday I tried my best to concentrate on school work. I didn’t proceed at all. I ended up playing Mahjong and taking a nap. In the evening I had a super fancy sweatpants, tv and frozen food -kind of date. The best way to relax after a hard week, am I right!
On Sunday me and friends decided to check out an Asian restaurant called Umami. Their food was delicious. Always when I try food like this I try to analyze which ingredients they have used so I could redo the dish at home but I never end up doing it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next week was nothing but school work from the morning to the evening. I have three presentations coming up, one paper to write and of course exams and normal homework. I feel like I am learning so much and these courses are actually beneficial for me but at the same time I feel like there is no point in stressing over grades and stress over studying. I think I have found a nice balance in working hard during week and then being super lazy during the weekend.
After one Thursday we went to have a drink to a bar to plan our Spain/France roadtrip. After 30 minutes we had already booked flights to... SCOTLAND! No idea what that trip is about but I can not wait for the exams to be over now. We are going to visit both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Hopefully the weather is not going to be a classic February gray rain weather, though.
On Friday 31.1. we were supposed to have a house party but decided to do a pub crawl instead. Somehow our group grew to 10 people and towards the end of the evening we were having a hard time to fit into the places we wanted to go to. The first one, multilayerladen was the stereotype of a hipsterish Berlin bar where people sat on swings, Mary Poppins film was projected to the wall and rusty shopping carts were used as a decoration. They made a delicious and affordable Gin & Tonic though so nothing to complain there. Then, naturally we ended up at Que Pasa to order their 3,5€ cocktails and read palms. Then towards the end of the evening our group started to crumble. At the last place we found fun pinball arcade machines, had conversations about language grammar and smoking and then finally left the extremely crowded yet cozy place (Clash).
I had the laziest fucking Saturday yesterday and I plan to spend my Sunday exactly the same way. I already slept for 13 hours and now I plan to play some sims, maybe bake something and maybe in the evening do something for school. If the stores were open, I would have wanted to go thrift shopping today, it seems like the perfect day for that but unfortunately I have to leave that for the week.
Recently I have been feeling melancholic because I know my exchange year is ending soon. It is hard to enjoy fun moments when you know you are going to leave these people soon and go back to your normal life. I should accept that this semester is just a temporary part of my life and I won’t feel the same after a year. I know that after being in Finland for a couple of months, I am already used to it and don’t feel so dead inside anymore :D Also, I can always come back after graduating. Literally, who knows what I am going to do. At least now if I ever think about moving abroad, I know I’ll manage and fear isn’t holding me back.
