Tips to prevent sports injuries in times of Covid
Playing sports is great exercise for adults, children, and families alike. Unfortunately, sports injuries can be a part of the game too, especially for children. This is how you and your family can play it safe and prevent sports injuries.
Always wear the proper protective equipment
It's been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that's certainly true when it comes to avoiding sports injuries.
Always wear helmets, pads, and any other necessary protective gear (some sports require more safety gear than others). The equipment you need will vary widely from sport to sport, and you may even need to have several types of the same piece of equipment for different activities. A bicycle helmet is different from a football helmet.
Choosing sportswear
Protective gear is important, but so is other gear you may be wearing. Well-fitting shoes will keep your feet and legs happy, for example.
Emphasize warm-up
You should never jump straight into a sport or game without warming up properly, no matter how tempting it may be. It is a vital injury prevention technique that is beneficial regardless of the sport you play. Try some jumping jacks, squat jumps, and dynamic stretches to get your blood pumping and your muscles ready to play.
Children and teens may be tempted to jump right into the game, but you should also explain the importance of warming up your children. You can even turn the warm-up into a fun game or activity on its own.
Proper nutrition and hydration are the key
In many ways, avoiding sports injuries begins in the kitchen. An athlete's diet should be full of whole foods like fruits and vegetables, plus lean protein to fuel growing muscles. Whether you're feeding yourself, your kids, or the whole family, proper nutrition will keep your bodies going.

Minimally Invasive Surgery for Sports Injuries: A Guide from an Expert Orthopaedic Surgeon in Surat
Sports injuries are a common occurrence, often requiring specialized medical intervention for effective treatment and rehabilitation. Traditional surgical procedures have long been the standard approach to address these injuries. However, advancements in medical technology have led to the development of minimally invasive surgery, revolutionizing the way sports injuries are treated.
But these advancements aren’t talked about within the sports community enough. As a result many sportsmen do not know about the effectiveness of minimally invasive surgery in sports injuries treatment. So, here we are, helping you understand and answer some frequently asked questions regarding its benefits and applications.
What is the main advantage of minimally invasive surgery?
The main advantage of minimally invasive surgery is its ability to significantly reduce the trauma and amount of scarring associated with traditional open surgeries. And that’s why it is opted for during performing hand surgery in Surat quite often, along with knee and shoulder surgeries. By utilizing small incisions and specialized instruments, surgeons can access the affected area without the need for large, invasive cuts. As a result, patients experience less pain, reduced blood loss, and shorter hospital stays compared to traditional surgery. Additionally, the recovery period is often faster, allowing athletes to return to their sport sooner.
Minimally invasive surgery in sports injuries treatment:
Minimally invasive surgery has revolutionized the treatment of sports injuries by providing several benefits over traditional open surgery. One significant application of minimally invasive techniques is in the repair and reconstruction of torn ligaments, especially in some sports injury or an accident. Using small incisions and specialized tools, surgeons can access the wrist joint, elbow joint, knee joint etc, to remove the damaged ligament or cartilage , and replace it with a graft, which can be either a tendon from the patient’s body or a donor tissue. This approach offers improved stability, reduces the risk of complications, and enhances the overall outcome for athletes.
Another area where minimally invasive surgery plays a crucial role is in arthroscopic procedures. Arthroscopy allows surgeons to examine and treat conditions affecting the joints, such as cartilage damage, meniscal tears, and synovitis. Through small incisions, the surgeon inserts an arthroscope, a thin tube with a camera, into the joint to visualize the damage. Specialized instruments are then used to repair or remove the injured tissue. Arthroscopic procedures minimize joint trauma, decrease postoperative pain, and accelerate recovery, making them a preferred choice for many athletes and the best hand surgeons in Surat recommend it too.
What is surgical treatment for sports injuries?
Surgical treatment for sports injuries involves addressing severe or complex cases that cannot be effectively managed through non-surgical means such as physical therapy or medication. Common sports injuries that may require surgical intervention include torn ligaments (such as the anterior cruciate ligament or ACL), torn tendons, dislocations, fractures, and cartilage damage. The surgical approach, as preferred by some of the best orthopaedic surgeons in Surat, aims to repair or reconstruct the injured structures, restore function, and alleviate pain to enable the athlete’s full recovery.
What is minimally invasive surgery?
Minimally invasive surgery, also known as laparoscopic or keyhole surgery, is a technique that utilizes small incisions and specialized instruments to access and operate on the affected area. Instead of making a large incision, surgeons insert a tiny camera called a laparoscope and thin surgical instruments through small keyhole incisions. The laparoscope provides real-time images of the surgical site, enabling the surgeon to perform precise movements. This approach minimizes tissue damage, reduces scarring, and promotes faster healing.
Minimally invasive surgery has emerged as a game-changer in the treatment of sports injuries. With its ability to reduce trauma, scarring, and recovery time, it has become the preferred choice for many athletes. The techniques, such as arthroscopy and ACL reconstruction, have significantly improved the outcomes for sports-related injuries, enabling athletes to get back to their game quickly and safely. Moreover, minimally invasive procedures have expanded beyond sports injuries and are now utilized in various medical specialties, benefiting patients in numerous ways. As medical technology continues to advance, we can expect further innovations in minimally invasive surgery, enhancing the treatment options available for sports injuries and other medical conditions.

Wrist Arthroscopy: Procedure, Recovery and Outcome
Wrist arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that has become increasingly popular in recent years as a treatment option for various wrist conditions. This innovative technique involves the use of a small camera and specialized instruments to examine and repair damage inside the wrist joint, allowing for a quicker recovery time and less postoperative pain compared to traditional open surgery. We spoke to one of our best hand surgeons in Surat at Param Superspeciality Hospital to understand this technique. Here’s a compilation of our communication.
Who needs a wrist arthroscopy?
Wrist arthroscopy can be used to diagnose and treat a variety of wrist conditions.
Determining whether a patient needs wrist arthroscopy typically involves a thorough evaluation by a qualified healthcare provider, such as an orthopaedic surgeon. During this evaluation, the provider will assess the patient’s medical history, perform a physical examination, and order any necessary imaging studies, such as X-rays or MRI scans.
According to one of the best wrist fracture surgeons in Surat, some common indications for wrist arthroscopy include:
Chronic wrist pain that has not responded to non-surgical treatments such as rest, immobilization, physical therapy, and medications.
Difficulty moving the wrist joint or performing everyday activities due to wrist pain or stiffness.
Symptoms of wrist arthritis, such as swelling, inflammation, and decreased range of motion.
Suspected cartilage or ligament damage within the wrist joint, which may be caused by trauma or repetitive stress injuries.
Carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition in which the median nerve in the wrist becomes compressed, causing numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand.
If a healthcare provider suspects that wrist arthroscopy may be necessary, they will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with the patient and determine the best course of treatment based on their individual needs and preferences. In case the procedure needs to be performed, it is advisable to look for a hospital that provides the best hand-wrist surgery in Surat.
How is wrist arthroscopy performed?
Wrist arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows a doctor to examine and treat the inside of the wrist joint. The procedure involves the use of a small camera called an arthroscope, which is inserted through a small incision in the wrist. This allows the surgeon to see inside the joint and perform surgical procedures with specialized instruments.
The procedure is commonly used to diagnose and treat various wrist conditions, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist fractures, ligament tears, ganglion cysts, and arthritis. The type of procedure performed will depend on the specific condition being treated.
What happens during the procedure?
Before the procedure, the patient is given anaesthesia to ensure they are comfortable and pain-free during the surgery. Once the anaesthesia takes effect, the surgeon will make a small incision in the wrist and insert a small camera called an arthroscope. The arthroscope transmits images of the inside of the wrist joint to a monitor, which the surgeon uses to guide the instruments to perform the necessary surgical procedures. They will also insert specialized instruments through other small incisions to manipulate the joint and perform repairs as needed. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions will be closed with stitches or small bandages.
Recovery:
After the procedure, the patient will be taken to a recovery room to be monitored until the anaesthesia wears off. The wrist will be immobilized with a splint or brace for several days to promote healing. The patient may experience some pain and swelling in the wrist, which can be managed with pain medication and ice. The patient will also be advised to keep the wrist elevated to reduce swelling.
Depending on the severity of the condition and the complexity of the procedure, the patient may need to undergo physical therapy to regain full range of motion and strength in the wrist.
Outcome:
Most patients who undergo wrist arthroscopy experience significant improvement in their symptoms after the procedure. The success of the procedure depends on various factors, such as the severity of the condition, the age and overall health of the patient, and the skill and experience of the surgeon. But, in general, the procedure has a high success rate and a low risk of complications when performed by a qualified surgeon.
It’s important to note that wrist arthroscopy is a relatively low-risk procedure, but it may not be appropriate for everyone. Patients with certain medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders or active infections, may not be good candidates for the procedure. It is important to speak with a qualified healthcare provider to determine if wrist arthroscopy is the right option for you.
Wrist arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that can provide effective treatment for various wrist conditions. Patients can expect a relatively quick and easy recovery process and significant improvement in their symptoms. If you are experiencing wrist pain or discomfort, visit Param Superspeciality Hospital, considered as the best wrist surgery hospital in Surat to consult our qualified surgeons and determine if wrist arthroscopy may be a viable treatment option for you.

Understanding joint anatomy for joint surgery patients
Joint surgery can be a complex and daunting experience for patients. Understanding joint anatomy can help patients better understand the surgical process, the expected outcomes, and the recovery process. In case of getting an expert insight on joint anatomy and joint related issues we advise you to consult expert orthopedics at Param Superspeciality Hospital which is one of the best orthopaedic hospitals in Surat. Here is a brief overview of joint anatomy for joint surgery patients.
Joints are the places where bones meet and move against each other. They are important for movement and flexibility and can be found in many parts of the body, including the hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, and fingers. Joints are made up of several different components, including bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and synovial fluid.
Bones: Bones are the hard, dense structures that form the framework of the body. They provide support, protect internal organs, and enable movement. In a joint, bones are connected by ligaments, which are strong bands of connective tissue that help to stabilize the joint.
Cartilage: Cartilage is a tough, flexible tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. It provides a smooth, low-friction surface that allows bones to glide over each other during movement. Cartilage is also important for absorbing shock and protecting the bones from wear and tear.
Synovial fluid: Synovial fluid is a thick, clear fluid that fills the joint space. It provides lubrication and nourishment to the cartilage and other structures within the joint.
Ligaments: Ligaments are strong, fibrous bands of tissue that connect bones to each other in a joint. They provide stability and support to the joint, helping to prevent dislocation or other types of injury.
Tendons: Tendons are thick, fibrous cords that attach muscles to bones. They play an important role in movement, allowing muscles to pull on bones and generate force.
Understanding the different components of a joint can help joint surgery patients better understand the surgical process and the expected outcomes. During joint surgery, the surgeon may repair or replace damaged cartilage, ligaments, or other structures within the joint. For example, in a total knee replacement surgery performed at a best knee replacement hospital in Surat, the surgeon will remove the damaged cartilage and bone in the knee joint and replace it with an artificial joint made of metal and plastic components.
Following joint surgery, patients will need to follow a rehabilitation program to regain strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the affected joint. This may include physical therapy, exercises, and other forms of rehabilitation. Understanding joint anatomy can help patients understand why rehabilitation is important and what they can do to aid in their recovery.
In conclusion, joint surgery can be a complex and intimidating process for patients. Understanding joint anatomy can help patients better understand the surgical process, the expected outcomes, and the recovery process. By understanding the different components of a joint, patients can be better prepared for the surgery and the rehabilitation process that follows.

WHEN IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL AFTER Joint REPLACEMENT?
A common question among those seeking a joint replacement is how soon can I fly after surgery?
In general, I recommend that as soon as you feel comfortable sitting down, you can fly. Generally, the minimum time is three to four weeks. If the surgery was done within the last 6 weeks, I recommend anticoagulant treatment to prevent blood clots. Recent surgery is a risk factor for blood clots, as is prolonged sitting and dehydration; be sure to drink water on your flight.
For flights longer than 4 hours, I recommend getting up from your seat and moving around the plane every few hours. Compression stockings can help prevent swelling in the legs and lower the risk of blood clots. Taking aspirin before and after a long flight can also reduce this risk. However, if you've had a blood clot before, have a family history of blood clots, are taking birth control pills or hormone replacement drugs, have had recent surgery, or have cancer, you may be at a much higher risk. Prescription blood thinners are sometimes recommended for people at high risk for blood clots.
After a joint replacement, most patients want to know if the joint replacement will trigger airport security metal detectors. Belt buckles, key fobs, and smartphones can trigger sensitive metal detectors at airport security checkpoints. Many commonly used orthopedic implants can also trigger metal detectors. More than 90% of implanted total hip replacement (TCA) and total knee replacement (TKA) devices will trigger airport metal detectors. Many THA and TKA implants now include ceramic and plastic materials in addition to metal, and the metal is likely to cause an alarm. A card from your surgeon is no longer needed to identify these types of implants.
If you or a member of your family has a metal implant, he or she should inform a transportation security officer before the evaluation begins. Passengers can use the TSA notification card to discreetly communicate with security officers; however, showing this card or other medical documentation will not exempt the passenger from additional screening.
Many patients now prefer to be examined with imaging technology (x-ray machine) to reduce the likelihood that a pat-down will be necessary. If the TSA selects a pat-down, it will be helpful to wear clothing that allows you to easily reveal your surgical scar.

How Regular Sports Medicine Appointments Can Prevent Future Injuries
Sports are a great way to stay in shape and enjoy time with friends. Living an active lifestyle has many health benefits and keeps your body looking young. However, with any activity, you can injure yourself if you're not careful. These injuries can keep you on the sidelines for weeks or months and can cause a lot of unnecessary pain.
What does sports medicine involve?
Sports medicine is a type of practice that deals with injuries sustained during sports or any type of physical activity. And you don't have to be a professional athlete to need a sports medicine specialist.
This type of medicine targets injuries that occur anywhere in your musculoskeletal system. These injuries can range from mild to severe and can affect bones, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Examples of these types of injuries include:
Joint dislocations
Ligament sprains or sprains.
Muscle injuries
Tendinitis
Broken bones
Meniscus tears
Rotator cuff injuries
If you have suffered any of these injuries, our sports medicine team performs a thorough physical evaluation to determine the extent of your injury. Along with an evaluation, our doctors may also recommend that imaging procedures are needed to see the extent of the injury. This can include:
Bone scan
Magnetic resonance
Ultrasound
Computed tomography
Sports medicine does not only focus on acute injuries derived from physical activity. Our physicians also specialize in overuse or repetitive motion sports injuries. Injuries like this occur from sports like tennis or dancing.
Sports medicine can also help prevent injuries
You may think that sports medicine only focuses on treating injuries, however that is not entirely true. This type of practice also focuses on injury prevention. This generally involves a multidisciplinary team that includes our physicians along with:
Athletic trainers
Nutritionists
Sports psychologists
Physiotherapists
Our doctor can give you advice on how to condition your body to prevent future injury. These tips may include certain stretches to keep your body flexible or types of exercise that will keep your body in tip-top condition.

The importance of stretching throughout the day!
With some gyms closed and several people working from home, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for many people to get through their daily training. Sedentary behavior, including sitting for long periods of time, can contribute to adverse health effects, including something known as "sitting sickness."
Whether you're working in an office or from home, We suggest taking breaks every 30-45 minutes throughout the day for some simple stretches.
Our bodies can stiffen. You know, we're always in this hunched-over position when we're at our desks and working, so we really want to open our chest.
One way to do this is by simply doing a few simple shoulder rolls, so you simply bring them back and down.
Another really great activity you can do using a wall is to just walk up to the wall, put the back of your hands on the wall, and just slide your hands up and down smoothly.
Simply by placing your hands on the desk and stretching them, so that you move the bottom back and bring your arms forward.
