“HOWARDS END” (2017) Review
"HOWARDS END" (2017) Review If there is one production company associated with the works of E.M. Forster it is Merchant-Ivory, the creation of producer Ishmail Merchant and director-producer James Ivory. I find this odd, considering that Merchant-Ivory have only adapted three of Forster's novels. One of those novels is "Howards End", published in 1910. There have been at least three on-screen adaptations of the latter - a 1970 BBC movie, Merchant-Ivory's 1992 Oscar winning film and the ITV's 2017 miniseries. This particular article happens to be about the latter.
"HOWARDS END" is basically an exploration of social and class divisions in Edwardian Great Britain, through the viewpoints of three families - the intellectual and idealistic Schlegels, the Wilcoxes; who are wealthy capitalists; and the working-class Basts. Sisters Margaret and Helen Schlegel become acquainted with the Wilcox family during a trip to Germany. When Helen, the younger Schlegel sister, visits the Wilcoxes at their country house, Howards End. She becomes attracted to the younger Wilcox son, Paul, and they become engaged in haste. However, the pair soon regret their decision and quickly break off their engagement. but soon regret their decision, breaking off the engagement by mutual consent. Months later, the two sisters and their younger brother Theobald "Tibby" Schlegel attend a musical concert, when Helen accidentally takes an umbrella that belongs to the impoverished clerk Leonard Bast. He appears at the Schlegels' home to retrieve it but leaves in a hurried after becoming embarrassed by his umbrella's shabby quality and appearance. Several months more pass before Leonard's common-law wife, Jacky, appear at their home, demanding his whereabouts. Apparently, Leonard had embarked upon a long walk into the countryside upon leaving work. He returns to the Schlegels' home to explain his disappearance and quickly forms a friendship with the two sisters. Meanwhile, the Schlegels renew their acquaintance with the Wilcoxes when the latter move into a London townhouse, across the street from the latter, for oldest son Charles' wedding to a young woman named Dolly. With Helen visiting relatives in Germany, Margaret begins a friendship with Mrs. Ruth Wilcox. But their friendship is cut short by the latter's death. Sometime after Ruth Wilcox's funeral, the Schlegels become acquainted with the Wilcoxes again when Margaret and Helen encounter the recently widowed Henry Wilcox around the same time their friendship with Leonard Bast begins. Between Henry's bad employment advice regarding Leonard, Helen's developing dislike of Henry, and Margaret's growing attraction toward the businessman; a clash between social and political classes spiral toward a startling conclusion. I had first learned about this third adaptation of Forster's novel through a blog that centered around period movie and television productions. The writer, a major fan of the 1992 adaptation, had quickly dismissed this production (without having seen it, I may add) as not worth viewing. Considering my past experience viewing the 2007 television adaptation of "A Room with a View", I had felt inclined to follow the blogger's advice. But in the end, I had decided it would have been fairer to give "HOWARDS END" a chance. I am more than glad I did. Mind you, I had a few quibbles about "HOWARDS END". If I must be honest, I can only think of three quibbles right now. The miniseries featured a scene I believe should have involved a bit more of an emotional impact. This scene featured Margaret Schlegel's response to Henry Wilcox's decision to end their engagement, following the revelation of his past affair with Jacky Bast. I can see Margaret keeping her cool, while facing Henry's emotional decision. But even in the privacy of her room, Margaret had remained calm, almost cold, as he contemplated her next move. I do wish that director Hettie MacDonald and screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan had allowed a small peek into any emotional turmoil on Margaret's part. I also found her reaction to seeing Henry again, at his daughter Evie's wedding, a bit odd. She seemed a bit too . . . controlled, even after Helen had led her and Leonard away. Speaking of Jacky, I consider my third quibble to be a major narrative problem. And it is a problem shared by Forster's original novel and the 1992 film. What in the hell happened to Jacky Bast? Neither this miniseries, the novel or the movie bothered to reveal or hint Jacky Bast's fate, following that final event at the Howards End estate. It seemed clear that once poor Jacky had served her purpose in exposing Henry's past, Foster did not give her another thought. Screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala had decided to be faithful to the novel in her screenplay for the 1992 movie. I had hoped Lonergan would resolve this issue in miniseries' screenplay. Unfortunately, he had merely repeated Forster's mistake. Despite my issues, I really enjoyed "HOWARDS END". Much more than I had fully expected. Thanks to Hettie MacDonald's direction and Kenneth Lonergan's screenplay, I thought the miniseries did an excellent job in exploring the different social classes and political beliefs that permeated the story. I do not know if I would label the Wilcoxes as part of "the upper classes". Before World War II, only members of the aristocracy and landed gentry were regarded as the upper classes. The Wilcoxes are obviously rich capitalists, whose fortune had originated in one or many of the British colonies overseas. Before the war, they would be regarded as "trade", regardless of their wealth. I sometimes found myself wondering if Henry Wilcox's attempt to find a family estate of his own was indicative of his desire for the family to be regarded a lot higher than mere rich capitalists. After all, his first wife Ruth, whose family had owned Howard End for generation, may have come from the landed gentry. Henry and his children did not seem interested in living at Howards End. Yet, they seemed determined that Ruth's desire to pass the estate to Margaret would be prevented. I find it strange that none of this had ever occurred to me, while watching Merchant-Ivory's film or reading Forster's novel. Then again, I should not have been surprised. Watching this miniseries had made me aware of a lot of issues and emotions in the story - more so than the film and novel ever did. In at least two scenes, the miniseries seemed to have further exposed Henry's bullying and hypocritical nature. This was apparent in one scene in which he dismissed some of Helen's progressive views in a friendly, yet arrogant manner during her stay at Howards End in the first episode. Another scene featured Henry's refusal to consider that his advice regarding Leonard's employment had left the latter jobless. I found his reaction to Leonard's situation so arrogant and insensitive that I had to fight the urge to punch my fist through the television screen. I also noticed in some of the scenes featuring Ruth Wilcox that despite her gentle and soft-spoken nature, she seemed to exercise a strong grip on her family - including Henry. One very interesting scene in this miniseries featured Margaret and Helen's discussion about the Wilcoxes and the latter's negative comments on the wealthy family. Also, this version of Leonard Bast seemed not only more timid, but also more insecure. What I found surprising about this adaptation is the less-than-ideal portrayal of the Schlegel sisters. Mind you, MacDonald and Lonergan's portrayal of "Tibby" Schlegel did not hesitate to expose the character's sharp wit, arrogance and self-absorbed nature. One brutal moment featured Tibby refusing to speak to Leonard, when the latter appeared at the Schlegels' current home to learn Helen's whereabouts. And as shown in the 1992 adaptation, the pair also exposed Helen's over-emotional reaction to the Wilcoxes and Margaret's relationship with Henry, along with Margaret's willingness to throw the Basts under the bus, when their very presence (I should say Jacky Bast's presence) proved to be a major inconvenience to her engagement. But I was surprised by MacDonald and Lonergan's willingness to expose Margaret's shallow fascination of Henry Wilcox's "manly" traits and his wealth - something I suspect that may have led her to consider him as a potential husband. Another moment that caught me by surprise was Helen's disregard for Jacky Bast and the dismissive comments she had made about the latter. She only seemed interested in Leonard, who somewhat shared her family's intellectual pursuits. Just about every performance featured in "HOWARDS END" struck me as first-rate. I could not think of one misstep within the cast - at least as performances were concerned. Mind you, I thought casting Matthew MacFadyen and Julia Ormond as Henry and Ruth Wilcox was a bit problematic. Especially since Ormond is nearly a decade older than MacFadyen. But I cannot deny that both gave excellent performances. Ormond did a great job in portraying a soft-spoken and graceful woman who was not only in a state of physical decline, but also managed to exact a strong will over her family. I was really surprised by MacFadyen's portrayal of Henry Wilcox, but I thought he gave a fabulous performance as the domineering, yet short-sighted businessman who reeked of toxic masculinity. Although his appearance in the miniseries was brief, I thought Jonah Hauer-King gave a solid portrayal of the younger Wilcox son, Paul. Bessie Carter and Yolanda Kettle struck me as equally solid as Henry's only daughter, Evie Wilcox and Charles' bride and later wife, Dolly Wilcox. But I was very impressed by Joe Bannister's portrayal of elder son Charles Wilcox. I thought he did an excellent job of conveying the character's conservative and brutish nature without any taint of cartoonish acting. Alex Lawther gave an excellent performance as the eccentric and self-absorbed Tibby Schlegel. Why do people assume that performers known for comedy would have such difficulty in dealing with dramatic roles? I never understood this attitude, considering comedy is known for being more difficult to perform. Tracy Ullman, who portrayed the Schlegels' Aunt Juley Mund had no difficulty in seamlessly utilizing both comedy and drama in her first-rate portrayal of the meddling, conventional, yet well-meaning woman. I thought Rosalind Eleazar gave an exceptional performance as Jacky Bast, a former prostitute who also happened to be Leonard's ill-fated woman. Eleazar managed to infuse a sense of desperation in Jacky, who struggled unsuccessfully to keep her and Leonard from falling into some kind of social and economic abyss. It seemed good to see Hayley Atwell in a properly dramatic role, after spending years appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and television shows. I thought she gave a first-rate portrayal as Margaret Schlegel, the warm and strong-will sibling of the Schlegel family. Atwell did an excellent job of conveying Margaret's most admirable traits and at the same time, exposing the character's more questionable ones with great subtlety. I especially admire her performance in one scene in which she tried to force Henry to face his hypocritical refusal to forgive Helen's state as an unmarried mother, in comparison to his adulterous past with Jacky Bast. Joseph Quinn recently made a name for himself as an eccentric high school student during Season Four of the Netflix series, "STRANGER THINGS". But I was more than impressed by his portrayal of the intellectual wannabe, Leonard Bast, who found himself befriending the Schlegel sisters. Quinn did a great job in not only portraying Leonard's intelligence and longing for intellectual pursuits, but also his growing insecurities as he found his life being drawn even closer to the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes. But if I had to vote for the best performance in "HOWARDS END", I would select Australian actress, Philippa Coulthard. I thought she gave a superb performance as the younger Schlegel sister, Helen. I really admired how Coulthard conveyed Helen's emotional journey throughout the story; especially in scenes that featured Helen's scathing commentary on the Wilcox family, her growing hostility toward Margaret's romance with Henry Wilcox, her complicated relationship with Leonard and especially her anger at the Basts' destitute situation in the wake of Henry's poor employment advice. One aspect of "HOWARDS END" that really took me by surprise was the excellent qualities of the miniseries' production values. Mind you, Sheena Napier's costume designs never attracted the same kind of acclaim that those from the 1992 movie. If I must be honest, I actually enjoyed her designs (as shown below):
I found them quite colorful and beautiful without being too stylized or glamourous. Considering the characters viewers are dealing with, that seemed sufficient to me. I also enjoyed Wojciech Szepel's beautiful photography, especially in locations in London, Dorset and Buckinghamshire. But what really blew my mind were Luke Hull's production designs. I thought he did a superb job in re-creating Edwardian England, especially those scenes shot and set in London. While watching the miniseries, I felt as if someone had dropped me squarely back into London circa 1905-1906. "HOWARDS END" managed to score a good number of award nominations, but I noticed that most of them came from lesser award organizations. It did win the BAFTA Award for Best Miniseries, but that was about it. No other nominations from BAFTA, no nominations from the Golden Globes or the Emmys. And all I can say is . . . "what the hell?" "HOWARDS END" proved to be one of the best television limited series I have seen in years. It became a critical darling from the media. Yet, it did not earn or win any major nominations, aside from the BAFTA Best Miniseries award? Were people so busy comparing it to the 1992 Merchant-Ivory film that they were blinded by its own merits? Hell, I believe it is just as good as the 90s film in its own way. I thought Hettie MacDonald, screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan had created an exceptionally first-rate miniseries that featured superb performances from a cast led by Hayley Atwell, Matthew MacFadyen and Philippa Coulthard. Perhaps one day, many other than the media, will appreciate it on its own merits.

Amongst The Stars: Chapter Three
Josh x Quinn (Nonbinary OC)
Warnings: Misgendering of a nonbinary character, Men (that’s it. That’s the warning), Wallet chains, Jake being Sweet. Word Count: 4.1k Summary: Josh has always loved love, and he's finally found it. Buuuut, he can't exactly tell anyone. Join him as he navigates the ins and outs of his sweet, secret romance. Author's Note: We are officially on our regularly scheduled programming. Every monday, babies. I hope you all enjoy this one and the little dual POV action. I just had to get quinn back in there for a little bit at the end :)
Can't Take My Eyes off You - Frankie Valli “Pardon the way that I stare There's nothin' else to compare The sight of you leaves me weak There are no words left to speak”
I can’t stop thinking about Quinn after they leave. Every little thing I do draws my mind back to them. I know it’s wrong, and I shouldn’t be, but I am jealous of their partner. God, Josh, you sound insane. Pining for a person you’ve met one time, being jealous of their partner. Their partner doesn’t respect them, so their partner doesn’t factor in. Sometimes, I wish brains functioned like an etch-a-sketch because I try shaking my head to clear those thoughts, but it doesn’t quite work, and I end up with a minor headache. Oh well. I walk back up to the front of the store, disinterested in actually working now that my day has been positively derailed by a lovely and mysterious person in a pair of beat-up Doc Martens.
I stand by the front registers, waiting to greet customers as they walk in. Hobby Lobby has never been my favorite place to work, but it really isn't so bad when you're a manager and can choose to fuck off on the clock if you want to.Which I do. I want to fuck off on the clock badly. I look down at my watch, noting that I only have 20 minutes until I can clock out for the day. There's no sense in starting a new task, I smile to myself. I'm pleased I've managed to time my “greeting responsibilities” so well with the end of my shift. I stand around for a minute, bouncing back and forth on the balls of my feet, and I let my mind drift back to Quinn. Their lips looked so plush and biteable. It should be illegal that they nibbled their lips in front of me while I didn't have the option to offer my assistance.
I ponder their lips for another moment before my mind slips back to their concerning comment. “He’d done a lot worse for less…” My eyebrows furrow as I try to imagine a situation in which I would be anything short of sweet and kind to Quinn.
I meander out of the first set of sliding doors and step into the area where only the ugliest furniture goes to die. Goin’ to the Hobby Lobby lobby, I sing to myself as I take stock of the atrocious seasonal items that no customer would ever think to purchase. That's a lie; old women exist. I walk the area and make a mental note to bring the feather duster out tomorrow to tackle the growing piles of dust that inhabit the, reasonably, rejected items. I run my finger along the gilded frame of one of the paintings that’s propped up atop one of the fucking ugliest baby pink chalk-painted tables I've ever seen. Of course, it's chalk paint, I shudder. My thoughts return to the painting; it’s massive, at least two and a half feet long—a highland cow with fluffy hair covering its eyes and an inexplicable crown of leaves resting upon its stupid little horns.
“Oh, Bessie,” I whisper, pulling my finger back from the frame and examining the dust that came with it. “They could never make me hate you. I may hate everything in this sad room, but never you.” I decide to check the markdown schedule tomorrow because, as much as I love this goofy little cow, I will never take her home at full price. I do have some standards.
As I'm about to turn around and head back into the store proper, I hear the entrance door slide open as a man about my age, give or take, walks through.
“Oh! Hey, man. Welcome to Hobby Lobby,” I greet him. “Lookin' for a dude named Josh.” Me? I take a second to look him over. Curly, blonde hair that sits a bit too close to his eyes. Nondescript black tee with baggy jeans. A wallet chain attached to his belt loop. A fucking wallet chain. What year is this? Well-worn Adidas sneakers. He seems safe enough. A bit worse for wear, but he doesn't seem scary.
“Ah, yep,” I stick my hand out, offering it in greeting, “that’d be me!” He looks at my outstretched hand and scoffs. Okayyyyyyy, maybe I misjudged. “I just wanted to talk with you, man to man.” “About…” “About you flirting with my girlfriend,” he cocks an eyebrow. “Not sure what you mean, champ,” I let out an awkward chuckle.“Don’t pull that shit with me, man.” “I’m afraid I really don't know what you're talking about. I haven't said more than ‘hi, welcome to Hobby Lobby’ to a girl in weeks.” “So, you're gonna act like you have no idea who Quinn is?” I narrow my eyes, putting two and two together. This is Quinn’s shithead partner. “I don't think they’d appreciate you calling them your girlf—” “I don't exactly care what she’d appreciate right now,” he cuts me off, “I'm here to talk to you.”
Oh, so he reallyyyyyyyy doesn't respect them. Noted.
“Yeah, so,” I roll my eyes, “you can talk at me, but you're not talking to me until you show some respect.” I watch his face contort in confusion, quickly morphing into anger. “Why should I respect you?” He spits out quickly. “Are you delusional? Just stupid?” I can't help but laugh at the look on his face “I’m not asking you to respect me,” I continue, “I'm asking you to respect your partner. It’s ridiculous that you're in here, trying to talk to me ‘man to man’ while you're misgendering them.” I watch as realization dawns on his face. “Come on, you know I didn't mean that.” “I’m assuming you’ve been with them long enough to know better,” I watch his eyes slowly shift away from mine, “not that length of time has anything to do with respect.”
His eyes fall to the floor, properly chastised.
“I—” “For what it’s worth,” I cut him off, “from the few minutes that I talked to Quinn today, in a purely professional capacity, I think they deserve better than whatever it is you have to offer.” “Hey—” “AND, don't forget that they’ll realize that one day. And when they do, someone will be waiting to treat them better.”
I check my watch. Time to gooooooo!
“Anyway,” I pause, narrowing my eyes at him in a silent gesture to get his name. “Craig.” “Anyway, Greg, my shift is over. I don't intend to mention this to Quinn the next time I see them, and I’d suggest you don't either.”
I turn on my heel and book it to the break room, practically sprinting by the time I make it to the double doors. I push through, throw my smock on one of the hooks above the time clock, and punch out. Finally, finally, I sit on the worn-out leather couch across from the lockers and let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding in.
“What the FUUUUUUUUUUCK,” I lean my head back and groan.
I didn't have “getting accosted by a fucking freak” on today’s bingo card, but I suppose I'll have to tick it off regardless. Who does he think he is? Who do I think I am? I don't talk to people like that. I pull out my phone and send a text to Jake, chuckling at his nickname in my phone. I'm five minutes older, and I will never let him live it down.
Me: I think I messed up Kiddo: Elaborate on that? Me: No
I slide my phone into my pocket and stand up from the couch, shaking some of the nervous energy from my limbs. I’ll explain everything to Jake when I get home; I just need him to know I may be in a mood.
I let out a long sigh and slowly made my way out to the front of the store, praying to whatever gods existed that Craig would be gone by the time I got there. I thank all my lucky stars as I walk out of the first set of sliding doors and find myself alone. I glance once more at my girl Bessie, then head out to the parking lot. I glance in every which direction, ensuring that Craig isn’t hiding anywhere, waiting to pop out and murder me. Perhaps I am being dramatic, but my gut tells me you cannot trust someone who wears a wallet chain unironically. And I always follow my gut.
I make it to my Jeep truck and sigh as I plant myself in the driver's seat, connecting my phone to Bluetooth and clicking into my Apple Music Discover Station. Occasionally, I find something new that I enjoy. The opening notes of a pop song filter over the speakers as I back out of my parking spot and pull through the parking lot. Sam would hate this; I’ll have to add it to the bar playlist.
I bob my head to the music, driving down the road back to my apartment “I’m your dream come true when it's on a platter for you…” For some reason that brings Quinn to the forefront of my mind, I can’t help but think about what a piece of shit Craig was to me today. I hope he’s better to them, but something tells me he isn’t. The things they said about him today…My stomach clenches thinking about it. Someone like Quinn deserves the world, and Craig is obviously not giving it to them. I could. Okay, no, that’s crazy.
I sigh, pulling up to the stop sign next to the bar that Jake owns. We’ve lived in the apartment above it for years, but the prior owner finally decided to sell it, and Jake took him up on the offer. Jake got a job down at the docks when we were freshly graduated from high school; he decided he didn’t care about college and just wanted to set himself up with a good job that would pay him enough to put money back in savings and have a little spending money on top, and in Portland… That’s the docks. Not that he ever needed spending money; he didn’t (and still doesn’t) ever do anything for himself. He’s always been too busy taking care of everyone else. I can’t even remember the last time he took a nice girl out for dinner.
I pull into the back side of the parking lot and slam my car into park, practically jerking my key out of the ignition and running through the backdoor of the bar, ready to see my twin after the horrendously long day I’ve had.
“Uh, hey, bub,” Jake greets me from behind the bar with a confused wave. “Hey, kiddo,” I sigh, sitting at the bar top, “can I get a salty dog?”“Sure thing, gin or vodka?” I raise an eyebrow at him, signaling he doesn't need to be in customer mode with me. “Surprise me.”
I watch as he takes a bottle of Tanqueray gin from the top shelf, pours a measure of it into his cocktail shaker, and then adds grapefruit juice, lime juice, and ice. He shakes it, then strains it into a highball glass rimmed with salt and slides it over to me.
I take a sip, and, of course, it's delicious. Jake indeed found his calling here — no one on this earth can make a cocktail like he can.
“Perfect as always, Jake.” “I don't make them any other way,” he starts, “now, wanna tell me about how you ‘think you messed up?’” I slam back the rest of my drink and shake my glass, asking for another. “Slow down, you're gonna drink me out of house and home,” Jake scolds, but prepares another one, nonetheless. “I need a little help loosening my lips.” “Get real, you've never had an issue talking in your life. If anything, you're too good at it.” I roll my eyes but secretly know he’s correct. I'm a known yapper. “I resent that, you know.” “And I don't care, stop changing the subject.” “Fine,” I huff, “I got into a fight with a customer today.” “Physical or…” “Verbal, obviously. Do I look like a scrapper?” He chuckles, wiping non-existent dust off of the spotless bar top.
“Anyway, some crazy dude wearing a wallet chain, of all things, came in and yelled at me for hitting on his partner.” “What?” “Yes, Jake. A wallet chain. In 2024. I was baffled, too.” “No! Not that, you weirdo. He yelled at you for what?!” “Oh, he thought I was hitting on his partner.” “Well, were you?” I sit and think for a moment. I wasn't not flirting with them, but it wasn't my initial intent. “Maybe a little,” I sigh, “I didn't realize they were in a relationship. And I do have eyes. They were too cute. I had to try and shoot my shot or whatever the kids say.” “You’d ‘shoot your shot’ with a wall. I’m honestly shocked this is the first time this has happened.” “I resent that, too.” “Add it to the list.” “Anyway, I think the guy was just insecure. But I may have been rude to him.” Jake slowly blinks at me. “You were rude?” “I know,” I laugh, “he just brought it out in me.” “How rude were you?” “Well, I jumped his ass for misgendering his partner.” “That's not exactly rude,” Jake jumps in, “it’s quite the opposite, I'd say.” “I’m sure he didn't feel that way.” “Why do you care? You did what was right; plus, it’s not like you'll ever see this dude again. Hell, you probably won't even see his partner again. No harm, no foul.” My stomach flips at the thought of not seeing Quinn again. We don't have time to unpack that.
“Yeah, you're probably right. I’ll never see either of them again and, as of right now, he hasn't reported me to corporate. So, no need to stress.” “Exactly right, bub.”
I finish up my drink and set the glass down.
“Thank you, Jake.” “You don't have to thank me, I’ll always be on your side.”
I reach out and pat his arm.
“Also,” Jake starts, “I don't know the situation, but it’s pretty serious if you actually act rude to someone else. So, don't discount those feelings.” What is he saying? I fix him with a confused look. “I don't understand.” “Look, Josh,” he sighs like he’s preparing to explain physics to a five-year-old, “I’m not telling you to get in the way of their relationship. But, if the opportunity to explore this arises, don't let that opportunity go to waste. It’s no small thing that you felt connected enough to this person to do what you did today.”
“You know, I did tell the guy today that if he doesn't treat them right, someone else will be there waiting. Maybe I’m that someone.” “You could be, if that's what you wanted.”
I simply hum a response. Jake has given me too much to think about.
“I appreciate you lending me an ear, brother,” I shove my stool back from the bar and stand, “but I have chores to take care of upstairs. Text me if you need a hand down here.” “Will do.”
I open the door to the apartment that Jake and I share above the bar. Home sweet home, finally. I kick my shoes off and walk into the living room, planting myself on the couch, thinking about Quinn the whole time. Something about them piqued my interest. I can't help but feel that if we’d met at a different point in time, we’d be together right now. That's ridiculous. You've spoken to them for a total of 3 minutes.
It is true that I've only spoken to them for a few moments, but I noticed them the first time they ever came in while I was working. I've watched them from afar, hoping to find a way to actually converse with them. I was shocked when they found a way to converse with me first. Jake may joke about how I’d hit on anyone, but that's not true. I’m nice to everyone, and I'm flirty with a lot of them. But Quinn is different. And it's unbelievable that I feel that way. I don't wink at every single person I see, nor do I tell them how important their work is. I certainly don't get into verbal altercations defending other people. Verbal altercations are reserved for when someone is talking shit about my family. So, what makes Quinn different? I keep replaying our interaction in my mind. I got butterflies when they complimented my tattoo. I was practically shaking when they pulled me in for a hug. I was angry on their behalf when they insinuated that they don't have people who support them.
What. Makes. Quinn. Different.
I never act this way about strangers, but it's as if their soul called out to mine, and mine answered. It's the only way I can explain the way I handled Craig. I called him GREG just to piss him off. I never do shit like that. But he was an absolute chode. He kind of deserved it. I can internally debate whether he sucks or not all night, but it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t speak like that to people, and if Quinn, sweet, curious Quinn, weren’t involved, I likely wouldn’t have spoken to him that way either. Regardless, I really need to find a way to get closer to Quinn. Good job; that sounds so creepy. What I mean is that I feel a soul-deep need to know this person. I don’t know in what capacity because it seems as though I’m entering their life a little late for it to be romantic. Which is what I want. But I could be just in time for friendship. I’ll take it if they truly want to extend the offer, but only time will tell.
When Craig makes it back home, shopping bags in tow, Willa and I are roughly two and a half sheets to the wind.
“Well, well, well,” Willa points an accusatory finger at him as he walks through the door, “The prodigal Greg returns.” I can’t help but snicker, knowing how much it pisses him off when: 1) Willa is here without warning 2) Someone calls him by the wrong name.
“Hey, Willa,” He plastered on a pained smile. Willa turns to look at me, shock written on her face. That may be the nicest he’s been to Willa in months. Craig walks into the kitchen and places his bags on the counter.
“Didn’t realize you were going to be here,” He half shouts from the other room, “But you’re welcome to stay for dinner if you want.” “Does he even know how to cook?!” She whispers. “He knows how to heat food up,” I shrug. “I’m making Eggplant Parm.” My eyes light up. It’s my favorite meal. “Maybe this is his way of apologizing,” I whisper to Willa. She rolls her eyes but cuts me a devious look. “That sounds great, Craig. I’d love to stay if you’ll have me.”
“You girls just stay in there, and I’ll have it out in a jiffy.” “Jiffy?” Willa mouths, fighting back a laugh. “Girls?” I mouth back, shaking my head, and Willa’s face instantly sours. She knows that Craig has a hard time with my pronouns and prefers to ignore my identity. This is a regular point of contention in my relationship with Craig and, by extension, my relationship with Willa. I don’t understand why he does it, and she doesn’t understand why I let him get away with it. I don’t understand why I let him get away with it. He is quite literally just a man.
Willa and I fall into silence for a moment before she grabs my hand and stage whispers just loud enough that Craig may hear. “I bet Stock Boy wouldn’t misgender you.” I hear a small crash from the kitchen, and I clap one of my hands over her mouth. “Stop!!”
I feel her tongue dart out and lick between my fingers, and I let out a squeal. I pull my hand back from her mouth and wipe it on her shirt. “You are an absolute monster. I’m not sure why I allow you to call yourself my friend.” “Oh, Quincy,” she lets out a cackle, “You wouldn’t know what to do without me.”
I roll my eyes, but it’s true. She is the only thing that has kept me sane since we moved to Maine. She’s my rock. Kind of sad that your own partner isn’t your rock, Quinn. Willa picks up our empty wine glasses from the coffee table and shoots me a wink before heading into the kitchen. Surely, this will be fine. Willa trapping Craig in a room could not possibly cause anything terrible to occur.
I can hear their muffled voices just enough to make out their conversation. ‘So, Craig. What did you get up to after Gamestop?’ I wince, waiting for his response to that emphasis. Willa has always been phenomenal at telling him that she knows precisely when he’s messed something up. ‘Oh, uh. I just stopped by the grocery. Wanted to make it up to Quinn.’ Interesting. ‘You were gone an awful long time to have just stopped at the grocery.’ ‘Mmm, yeah, well. I had to figure out what to make and how to make it. I’m not exactly a chef over here.’ ‘That’s an understatement,’ I wince again. What is she playing at? This situation is already precarious. ‘But, I suppose you get half of a point for trying. We’ll see.’
Willa walks back into the living room with two more glasses of wine for us.
“He’s–” She starts at full volume before I shush her, connecting my phone to the Bluetooth speaker in the corner. Once the music starts playing at an acceptable volume to cover our conversation, I motion for her to continue. “He’s lying. I can smell it on him. He didn’t just nip over to Hannaford and come home.” “I mean, obviously. He was gone for like three hours.” “You don’t care that he’s literally lying to your face.” “Technically,” I poke her side, “he lied to your face. And no, not really. If he came home and decided to be sweet for once, I’m not gonna question what it took to get him there.” “Quinn,” She says softly, reaching a hand out to pat my leg. “I know, Wills. But, just let me have this for the moment.”
She hums a non-response and drops the conversation.
I should have questions. I should care. But, if he’s going to be sweet, I’ll take it where I can get it because these moments are becoming fewer and further between.
“Dinner’s done,” Craig pops his head into the living room, “Y’all’s plates are already on the table.” Willa and I scramble to the kitchen table. “Thanks, babe.” I kiss Craig's cheek before sitting down. “It looks great.” “Anything for you, babe,” He beams.
I see Willa’s lips quirk up in a slight grin and brace myself for whatever she’s about to do.
“So, Quincy. I’ve got a photography project I’m working on, but I need some supplies. Wanna come to Hobby Lobby with me tomorrow?” I let out a massive sigh as the color drains from Craig’s face, and I begin mentally preparing myself to do damage control, but Craig impresses me. “That would be nice, Quinn. Y’all can get out of the house for a little bit. I’ll stay behind to clean up around here.”
Willa sits in shock, clearly not expecting that response.
“Oh, and Willa,” Craig smiles at her, “If you want to stay over tonight, I’ll take the couch. Don’t want you to drive home after you’ve had all that wine.”
Maybe he’s turning over a new leaf.
Even if Craig has decided to be a bit nicer after his moment earlier; I still can’t help the little shock of excitement that rushes through me at the thought of being able to see Josh again so soon. I’m not sure what it is about him, but I want to learn more about him. He’s the most compelling person I’ve met in a long time, and perhaps he feels the same about me.
I’m excited to see if our friendship may blossom.

New thread for Pertwee!Doctor
Serial: Spearhead from Space - Ep.1: It's 1970. We have a new Doctor. We have colour. We have Liz and the Brig. Let's go!
It's a bit Carry On Doctor with the whizzing around in wheelchairs and comedy hospital staff.
Serial: Spearhead from Space - Ep.2: Nope. Nope. Nope. I hate Autons. Loving Pertwee!Doctor's tattoo. Nothing like starting a regeneration with a bit of joyriding.
Serial: Spearhead from Space - Ep.3: I love Liz. I love the Doctor's cape. I really do hate Autons. Theyre the creepiest Who villain imo.
Serial: Spearhead from Space - Ep.4: The shop mannequins coming alive and walking the high street, killing people is something I remember watching as a kid and being utterly terrified. This has been a fun serial, though. Great start to 3's run.
Serial: Doctor Who & the Silurians - Ep.1 - 3: Bessie! I wish this guy wasn't called Dr Quinn. Liz is so smart. The Doctor is so gentle with her.
Serial: Doctor Who & the Silurians - Ep.4 - 7: The Doctor immediately offering his hand to the Silurian was genuinely touching. This was a nice introduction to The Silurians. I have enjoyed the serial, though I think it could have done with fewer episodes.
Serial: The Ambassadors of Death - Ep.1: The TARDIS control room looks like a late Victorian Gentlemen's Club. Nice to see the Doctor is still upset with the Brigadier over the end of the last serial.
Serial: The Ambassadors of Death - Ep.2-3: The Doctor is stealing again. Oooo that was a surprise! I was expecting aliens. I love Liz's outfit. Well you can't see the astronaut's faces so something is definitely up.
Serial: The Ambassadors of Death - Ep.4-6: I love Liz. Have I mentioned? She is amazing. Benton! The Doctor wants to go back to space so much he's willing to travel in one of Britain's crappy rockets.
Serial: The Ambassadors of Death - Ep.7: Of course the sady General was behind everything. The Brigadier has saved the day though. The aliens and the astronauts are saved and Liz looks fantastic. Whee!
Serial: Inferno - Ep.1-4: That was a lot of set up for a parallel universe story. Evil!Liz looks amazing. I don't know how they dragged this story out another 3 episodes. 4 total would have sufficed.
Serial: Inferno - Ep.5-7: This is very exciting but I still think it should have been shorter. I'm sort of weirdly invested in Greg and Petra. I love the Doctor & the Brig as BFFs. I am going to miss Liz
Serial: Terror of the Autons - Ep.1: The Master ❤️😭 Jo ♥️😍 Pertwee!Doctor's snazzy new smoking jacket 💜🤤 What's not to love about this?
Serial: Terror of the Autons - Ep.2: The inflatable chair ate someone. I remember that horrid creepy doll. Nope, nope, nope, nope. I hate this doll. However, I love that this Doctor is a sarcastic little shit.
Serial: Terror of the Autons - Ep.3: I really do hate Autons. Last season Pertwee!Doctor was big on car theft. Now he's moved on to safe-cracking.
Serial: Terror of the Autons - Ep.4: Everything got wrapped up very quickly and easily, but I did enjoy The Doctor and The Master flirting.
Serial: The Mind of Evil - Ep.1: There is so much going on. Priso riots, Mysterious deaths straight out of Room 101. Intrigue at the World Peace conference.
Jun 28 Serial: The Mind of Evil - Ep.2-3: There was a dragon! I am very much enjoying the Doctor speaking other languages. I love Jo. She's very brave & she just managed to single-handedly stop a prison riot. The Master started it again 30 seconds later obvs, but it's still impressive.
Serial: The Mind of Evil - Ep.4: So, the Doctor is afraid of Daleks, and the Master is afraid of the Doctor laughing at him. Sounds about right.
Serial: The Mind of Evil - Ep.5-6: The Doctor and The Master had some fun science times. The Brig played dress-up. Benton got a weird promotion. The Doctor and the Master flirted some more. UNIT blew up a factory for no reason. And then they all had tea.
Serial: The Claws of Axos - Ep.1: The Axons look awesome. The poor Master has been kidnapped and he looks so humiliated. Jo is being brave again while the men are being very stupid.
Serial: The Claws of Axos - Ep.2-3: Emergency. There's an emergency going on. These tentacled slugs doing interpretive dance don't look so awesome but they're certainly creepy. I loved The Master critiquing the TARDIS.
Serial: The Claws of Axos - Ep.4: Love a good fake out. A time loop is pretty self-explanatory, Brigadier. The Master trying to sneak past the eyeball was hilarious.
Serial: Colony in Space - Ep.1-3: At some point I would like Doctor Who to prove to me that any story set in a quarry is interesting. The machine with the claw hands is ridiculous. Always here for Pertwee!Doctor doing some "martial arts" though.
Serial: Colony in Space - Ep.4: The "brain" people are weird enough but the baby brain person is possibly the creepiest thing I've ever seen on Doctor Who. The Master voted for capitalism - shocker.
Serial: Colony in Space - Ep.5: Every time the Doctor and the Master are in the same room, my brain is yelling, "Just kiss, you morons!" I suppose it's not surprising that (Friends to) Enemies to Lovers is one of my favourite tropes with these two in my brain for 40 years.
Serial: Colony in Space - Ep.6: Well it picked up towards the end but it's probably the weakest of Pertwee!Doctor so far.
Serial: The Daemons - Ep.1-2: The Master is having the best time summoning "the devil" but his minions are definitely phoning it in. The Doctor is not dead despite being frozen to a block of ice, which makes Mike happy because now he doesnt have to tell the Brig.
Serial: The Daemons - Ep.3: I love this serial purely for the frustrated eyeroll response everyone has to finding out The Master is behind it.
Serial: The Daemons - Ep.4-5: There is literally nothing wrong with this serial. Everyone is magnificent. It is one of my favourites. Mike and Benton get plenty to do. Jo is brave and gentle. The Doctor is clever. The Master is a scoundrel. Bessie saves the day more than once. A+
Serial: Day of the Daleks - Ep.1-4: The Daleks are looking very colourful but they feel completely superfluous to this story. I enjoyed the non-Dalek parts more.
Serial: The Curse of Peladon - Ep.1-4: Princess Josephine taking her rightful place. An enjoyable serial with a very nice supporting cast of characters.
Serial: The Sea Devils - Ep.1-2: This is giving me Sherlock vibes. I bet the Master is running the prison. Oh look, the Master is running the prison. Did anything else happen except the duel and a lot of flirting? Nothing of importance.
Serial: The Sea Devils - Ep.3-4: I'm now half-way through Classic era Who. Jo is so amazing. I love her. Will she ever get to eat again?
Serial: The Sea Devils - Ep.5-6: Jo is ruining her suit crawling through ventilation shafts while the Doctor flirts with the Master over circuit diagrams. He reversed the polarity of the neutron flow!!!
Serial: The Mutants - Ep.1-6: I quite enjoyed the first and last episodes but the middle dragged a lot. Not one of the best.
Serial: The Time Monster - Ep.1-6: I really liked this one, though it felt a bit like two halves slapped together. Loved Benton getting turned into a baby. Love the Doctor's very important scientific equipment that was exactly the same shape as a thingy. Love Jo, always.
Serial: The Three Doctors - Ep.1-4: The Doctor meeting himself and other companions is always my favourite things in the Who-niverse. It's nice to see Troughton!Doctor again and in colour. I love how easily Benton takes it all and how weary the Brigadier is.
Serial: Carnival of Monsters - Ep.1-4: I've throoughly enjoyed this. It's mad and fun - mini time loops, creatures being dragged out of time, very grey aliens wanting to commit treason. I loved it.
Serial: Frontier in Space - Ep.1-6: The Master is back! Jo is usuing the excuse of providing a cover to lecture the Doctor on his relationship with the Master. This is only part of the reason Jo is The Master's favourite.
Serial: Planet of the Daleks - Ep.1: The Doctor is dying, which is an excessive reaction to being sort of shot imo. Jo is talking to a cassette tape. "Dear Diary, the Doctor is still unconscious…" Oop! The Daleks seem to have gained the power of invisibility.
Serial: Planet of the Daleks - Ep.2: Noooo, Jo has been poisoned. But she's still battling on because she is the best ever. I love Pertwee!Doctor's jacket. I would totally wear all of his clothes. I too am a dandy at heart.
Serial: Planet of the Daleks - Ep.3-4: That shaft suddenly got big enough for four people. And one Dalek. The Doctor and Jo are reunited; I'm possibly as happy about it as they are.
Serial: Planet of the Daleks - Ep.5-6: Why is there so much goo squirting everywhere in this story? I'm glad Jo didn't end up going to Skaro. Imagine how much more angst the Doctor would have had later if she had.
Serial: The Green Death - Ep.1: I don't want Jo to go. I will go with you to Metebelis III, Doctor. On second thoughts… The Brig is looking very dapper in his sports car. I love Jo even more for her environmentalism. She's the best.
Serial: The Green Death - Ep.2: I thought Pertwee!Doctor was going to slap Prof.Jones across the face with his driving gloves, but actually they're just bonding over science like the massive nerds they are while Jo is down a literal mine, trying to save the world.
Serial: The Green Death - Ep.3: Jo doesn't want to go to Metebelis III and be eaten by a snake. She wants to go to the Amazon with her boyfriend and be eaten by a snake. The Doctor, however, will not be allowing Jo to have any sex with Welsh professors on his watch.
Serial: The Green Death - Ep.4-5: The less said about episode 4 the better. The megalomaniac computer is kind of a brilliant villain. The Doctor is so done with it. Uh oh, Mike's in trouble. Benton will be beside himself.
Serial: The Green Death - Ep.6: Jo is getting married. The Doctor is sad and I am sad. I hope she hasn't been saving that wedding cake for him for the last 50 years. That was lovely.
Serial: The Time Warrior - Ep.1-2: Hello, Sarah Jane. Can you explain the Doctor? No one else can. I do like the Sontarans. I think they're cute. This has gone a bit Bedknobs and Broomsticks, with the armour moving and killing people on its own.
Serial: The Time Warrior - Ep.3-4: Sarah Jane is now leading an army, apparently. "I never lie." What a liar. Well that was lots of fun. You can't complain when you've got Pertwee!Doctor swinging on chandeliers can you?
Serial: Invasion of the Dinosaurs - Ep.1: Loving this post-apocalyptic London. Did the Doctor cut Sarah's hair during that quick TARDIS trip? Wow, that is a terrible dinosaur puppet. The poor Brigadier's life is so hard.
Serial: Invasion of the Dinosaurs - Ep.2: Nooooooo. Mike! Noooooooo. Benton is going to be heartbroken. I am heartbroken. The betrayal!
Serial: Invasion of the Dinosaurs - Ep.3: Sarah is waking up the awful dinosaur inflatable by taking pictures of it. Poor Benton - he hasn't even found out about Mike yet
Serial: Invasion of the Dinosaurs - Ep.4-5: WTF is that? Where's Bessie? Benton is such a good boy. I love him. I have enjoyed parts of this story but it could have been 4 episodes and I'm very sad about Mike.
Serial: Invasion of the Dinosaurs - Ep.6: Benton is the absolute MVP of this story. And the Doctor wins by reversing the polarity. With a nice anti-pollution message to end on.
Serial: Death to the Daleks - Ep.1: The Doctor has wandered off on his own and been captured, surprising no-one except poor Sarah, who just beat a burlap sack to death with a crank handle. The Doctor has escaped but Sarah is going to be sacrificed by the sacks.
Serial: Death to the Daleks - Ep.2-3: The Daleks arrive to the jauntiest music ever and can't kill anyone. Then they go off to have a little pow-wow. Hilarious. A giant vacuum cleaner has risen from the water to set one of the sacks on fire. This serial is wild!
Serial: Death to the Daleks - Ep.4: The Doctor has to get out of an escape room to blow up the evil city. Utterly bonkers.
Serial: The Monster of Peladon - Ep.1: Sarah is sick of tunnels and I can't say I blame her. I do like Alpha Centauri. How can you not like a green eyeball with arms and legs?
Serial: The Monster of Peladon - Ep.2-6: So much of this feels like a repeat of the last Peladon story. The Doctor has a sword though and I'm never going to argue with that. (I miss the Master)
Serial: Planet of the Spiders - Ep.1: I can't believe I'm on the last Pertwee!Doctor serial already. I don't want him to go. Mike! Mike interrupting a weird ritual. I like Sarah's 1920s hat. Jo! I miss Jo. And she misses everyone. Sarah you are being so dumb right now. Uh-oh.
Serial: Planet of the Spiders - Ep.2: The fake master stand-in has summoned a giant spider that shoots electricity. Poor Benton! Thinking he's expendable and then getting beaten up twice. Then there's a car chase, an air chase AND a boat chase.
Serial: Planet of the Spiders - Ep.3-6: So many giant spiders. Oh no, Sarah is been controlled by the Queen. That's terrifying. Mike!!! No!!! Oh phew, he's okay. Goodbye giant spiders. Goodbye Pertwee!Doctor. "Here we go again."
Pertwee!Doctor Era Round-up
Favourite Companion: Jo. No contest. I worship her.
Least favourite Companion: N/A I love them all
Favourite Serial: The Daemons / The Sea Devils
Least Favourite Serial: The Monster of Peladon
Pertwee!Doctor is a sexy bamf and I love him.

End of Summer Blurb; Josh & Quinn ✧˚
I’m awoken suddenly by the sound of gulls outside and flip over in bed to look at Quinn. The dawn light filters in through our window and Quinn looks angelic, sleeping comfortably, waiting for the day to greet them. God, I can’t believe I get to wake up to this every day. I lean over and brush my fingers along their face, tracing their features. Committing them to memory. I continue to trace their features, thinking about how this is one of our last free weekends before school is back in session and they’re forced to be away from me, molding young minds through their art. I watch as their nose starts to crinkle because of the feel of my fingers against their skin and their eyes snap open.
“Hi, baby,” they greet me in their sleepy voice. “Good morning, bug,” I whisper, pressing a kiss to the bridge of their nose, “Let’s get up. We have a big day.” Quinn lets out a huff but swings their legs over the edge of the bed and stands up. “Gimme a minute to become a human, Starlight,” They say through a yawn. I get up from the bed and walk around to give them a light pat on the ass. I toss a quick “Coffee’ll be up in a minute” over my shoulder as I walk out.
After we’re up and moving, we decide to head over to Hobby Lobby. Quinn needs to get a few items before the start of the school year, and this is the last Saturday before school goes back in session. Their first year teaching on their own, I could not be more proud of them.
We walk through the aisles of the store together, Quinn placing item after item in their cart. Chalk, pastels, acrylic paints, water colors, colored pencils, the list goes on. I can see their brain working overtime, trying to calculate how much they’ll have to shell out. It may have previously been a concern for them, but it never would be again, I think as I break off from them to walk toward the Hobby Lobby Lobby to see if my girl is still there. I reach the entrance to Hobby Lobby and immediately spot Bessie. My cow portrait, with a beautiful, beautiful yellow clearance sticker. I smile to myself, giggling a bit as I pick her up. I knew she’d go on sale eventually. I walk back into the store and see Quinn lined up, unloading their basket onto the conveyor belt. I walk up behind them, placing Bessie in with their items. “Oh, you think I’m made of money, huh?” They ask with a chuckle, but reach into their canvas bag to retrieve their wallet anyway. I bat their hand away, and quickly pull my debit card from the pocket of my jacket. “No, but I am,” I hand my card to the cashier without even hearing the total, “That’s the benefit of picking your own salary.” I place a kiss on the top of their head and grab Bessie before walking out the door. “Hey! Slow down,” They call after me, bags swishing with every step. “Sorry, Bug,” I laugh, “But, I made lunch reservations. Gotta speed up if you wanna get there on time.”
I love how supportive Josh is of Quinn's passion and career. Owie. Also.. Here's Bessie! Of course Josh would love her!
