The Art of a Kitchen Designer: Transforming Spaces with Style and Functionality
Tumblr media
The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, a place where functionality meets style. This delicate balance is achieved through the expertise of a kitchen designer, a professional who can transform an ordinary kitchen into a bespoke masterpiece. In this blog, we will explore how a kitchen designer can revolutionise your space, integrating it seamlessly with your house extensions, loft conversions, and other home refurbishments.
Understanding the Role of a Kitchen Designer
A kitchen designer is not just about aesthetics; it's about creating a space that is both beautiful and functional. From the initial consultation to the final installation, a kitchen designer works closely with clients to understand their needs, preferences, and lifestyle. They then use this information to design a kitchen that maximises space, enhances usability, and aligns with the overall design of the home.
Incorporating Bespoke Elements
One of the standout features of working with a kitchen designer is the ability to incorporate bespoke elements into the design. Whether it's bespoke kitchens, bespoke wardrobes, or custom carpentry, a kitchen designer can create unique pieces that fit perfectly into your space. This bespoke approach ensures that every detail, from the cabinets to the countertops, is tailored to your specific needs and tastes.
Seamless Integration with Home Improvements
A kitchen designer can also work alongside other professionals involved in your home improvements, such as those handling house extensions, loft conversions, and general home refurbishments. By collaborating with these experts, a kitchen designer ensures that the kitchen integrates seamlessly with the rest of the home, creating a cohesive and harmonious look.
Bespoke Joinery and Carpentry
In addition to designing bespoke kitchens, many kitchen designers offer bespoke joinery and bespoke carpentry services. This includes custom-made windows, doors, and other wooden elements that add a touch of elegance and uniqueness to your home. Bespoke joinery and carpentry not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your home but also improve its functionality and value.
Considerations for Roofing and Structural Elements
While focusing on the interior, a kitchen designer also considers the structural elements of the home, such as roofing and windows. Ensuring proper ventilation and natural light is crucial in kitchen design. By coordinating with roofing and window experts, a kitchen designer can optimise these elements to create a bright and airy kitchen space.
Maximising Space with Clever Design
One of the biggest challenges in kitchen design is maximising space. This is particularly true for homes with limited kitchen areas or unusual layouts. A skilled kitchen designer uses clever design techniques to make the most of every inch. This might include incorporating multi-functional furniture, using vertical space for storage, and creating efficient work zones.
Final Thoughts
Incorporating the expertise of a kitchen designer into your home improvement project can make a significant difference in the final outcome. Whether you're planning house extensions, loft conversions, or general home refurbishments, a kitchen designer ensures that your kitchen is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and efficient. With bespoke elements and careful consideration of structural details like windows and roofing, a kitchen designer transforms your kitchen into the heart of your home.
For anyone considering a home improvement project, investing in a professional kitchen designer is a decision that promises long-term satisfaction and value. Embrace the art of kitchen design and enjoy a space that perfectly reflects your style and meets your needs.

The Under-Stair Storage Solution: From Wasted Space to Functional Oasis
We all know that awkward space beneath the stairs. It can become a haven for dust bunnies and forgotten belongings. But with a little DIY magic, you can transform it into a functional and stylish oasis!
Tumblr media
Here are two options to consider based on your needs:
Option 1: The Hidden Cubby Paradise
Construct simple wooden frames to create cubbies underneath the stairs.
Mount doors (think reclaimed shutters or fabric panels for a touch of personality) to conceal the storage from view.
Use baskets or bins within the cubbies to keep things organized.
This option is perfect for storing seasonal items, out-of-season clothing, or even board games and toys.
Tumblr media
Option 2: The Built-In Desk Nook
If you're short on workspace, consider creating a built-in desk underneath the stairs.
Construct a sturdy work surface that fits perfectly within the space.
Add drawers or shelves for storage and incorporate a comfortable chair to complete your mini home office.
Don't forget lighting! Install a task lamp or overhead light for optimal functionality.
This project requires a bit more advanced DIY skills, but the payoff is huge! You'll gain valuable storage space and a dedicated work area, all tucked away under the stairs.

Top 5 Luxury Kitchen Trends for 2023 – Part 1
If you're looking to commission a new luxury kitchen in 2023, finding a bespoke kitchen designer could involve a hive of research, recommendations and hours of browsing interiors design magazines and blogs. Knowing what you want, those must-haves, such as a walk-in pantry or banquet seating, will help to envisage your dream kitchen, and there is a lot of inspiration out there. Knowing the luxury kitchen trends and where to take inspiration from is always helpful to ensure your dream kitchen becomes a reality.
Tumblr media
At Papilio Bespoke Kitchens, we've designed and built handmade kitchens for over twenty years. As a result, we have a good idea of timeless styles, aesthetics that work in specific spaces and what to look out for in 2023. Here are our top five luxury kitchen trends (Part 1) to inspire you.
1. Banquet Seating
Banquets and bench seating have become more popular over the past few years. Many top-rated international restaurants have revived that trend. Not only are they beautiful pieces of furniture in their own right, but banquets are also the multi-functional social heart of your kitchen. They can double up as storage, as well as section off parts of a kitchen in a permanent way. Banquets and benches can also be versatile and placed in an L-shape along a wall, under a large window, or become a new part of the built-in seating arrangement. For example, we designed bespoke banquet-style seating for our Georgian Manor House Kitchen project in rural Somerset. The bespoke handmade kitchen offered our client and their family a space to socialise over breakfast or drinks, making it a feature in their new kitchen.
2. Creative Materials
We love getting creative with materials, and slatted timbers have blown up on the interior design scene and show no sign of disappearing. Inspired by architectural engineering in hotel design, we see the 'slat-trend' pop up in luxury kitchen design. Adding natural wood in the form of slats is a great way to add height, to warm the aesthetic of a modern kitchen and creative hygge style. A fantastic example of being extra innovative with timber slats is in our Fulham Kitchen project in London. We initially introduced slatted wall coverings to the design to prevent sound from reverberating in the ample open-plan space, but ultimately, it became a key aesthetic within the design.
3. Colour Pop with Mixed Wood
In a world of eternal beiges, creams and neutrals, designers and individuals are breaking away from that safety and adding bursts of popping colour. The colour-pop trends come and go, yet with independent paint manufacturers such as Zoffany, Edward Bulmer and Francesca's Paints, it's hard not to consider contrasting colours for your contemporary kitchen. One distinguished example of a modern paint palette with natural wood in a kitchen is in our Bruton Kitchen in Somerset. We transformed the classic farmhouse kitchen into an atmospheric space bursting with character and warmth. The kitchen was practical and beautiful but with a contemporary edge without losing the charm of the 400-year-old farmhouse. We designed a sizeable free-standing kitchen island, positioned it centrally, and hand-painted it in a wonderfully sunny yellow. The pop of yellow colour highlighted the original stone floor and the ancient elm timber of the worktop. We painted our handmade wall cabinets in semi-glazed Lilac Pink for a soft contrast.
4. Pantries & Sculleries
Pantries and sculleries are on everyone's kitchen wish list. They can range in size, and they're not only a big trend for 2023 for luxury kitchens but a must-have. In the Bath Kitchen in the heart of rural Somerset, we designed a modern yet classic style kitchen with a Secret Scullery. The hidden scullery needed to be functional and accessible but hidden during dinner parties and social gatherings. So we developed disguised doors to the utility. In the open position, the doors nestled neatly into a recess. Whilst closed, the panelled doors created the illusion of a clad wall. Perfectly functional, yet completely hidden.
5. Reeded Glass
Reeded glass looks fantastic and has a mid-century look to it. It works beautifully in wall cabinetry, hiding crockery but offering texture and vertical height to heighten ceilings. A great example of this is in our Frome Kitchen in Somerset. We combined it with red-tinted walnut in the cabinetry. We also opted for reeded glass in a super modern Victorian townhouse kitchen in Plymouth. The Scandinavian-style kitchen featured American oak veneer cabinets to compliment the straight lines in the parquet floor. We installed reeded glass panels within the wall cabinets and framed them in brass. We didn't want to hide all of our client's beautiful collection of objet d'art and design pieces, so the reeded glass doors were placed at intervals.

watching the bear and all i can think of is aisling and the squad renovating and rebuilding the diner every six months or whenever there's an attack, and it all boils down to anthony and laszlo screaming at each other over wallpaper, kate and edwina teaming up to gaslight aisling into using real china cups and saucers for the coffees, stanley and richard smuggling the kids out to safety, wyll and sanji just knocking shit down delightedly and the company members each individually deciding not to interfere until the bags under aisling's eyes are reduced by at least 50%.
