You'd meant to tease him for the unrelenting feeling of his eyes on you. You'd meant for it to be playful and sassy, to suit the banter you two enjoyed daily.

What you got instead was Shuji carrying the damned thing like a bespoke albatross around his neck. You were met with bright eyes and a huge hand around your wrist, insistent that you take an adventure right then to take his new treasure for a spin.

Months after the initial gift, you were routinely cutting your senior classes to accompany Shuji on trips or getting wrapped into his hijinx to acquire more precious film. You found yourself squatting in alleyways flapping developing film around as if it'd make the image appear faster, laughing with your best friend.

You gifted him the camera not knowing what it'd do to his life. Not realizing it'd give him a purpose and an outlet. You gave it to him as a joke of a gift never expecting anything to come of it and certainly expecting nothing in return.

A year to the day, however, your best friend handed you a little bundle of photos tied together with a length of twine. Unravelling his scant wrapping, you were met with white plastic lined square photos of your likeness...

Your head rested on your folded forearms and all that was visible of your face was a slight pout and your closed eye. Sunlight washed over your napping form and bathed you in a romantic glow.

At the bottom of the last photo in the collection of candids, in Shuji's signature scrawl you read: still doesn't last long enough.

You couldn't help the way warmth creeped from your cheeks to your ears. This was a surprise. It shouldn't have been, you supposed, not with how Shuji's eyes were always glued to you, or given how inseparable you lot were. You knew the pair of you were close, even had an inkling that you loved each other but neither of you would say it in so many words. You'd never crossed that line.

Shuji shifted his weight to his other foot. He opened his mouth, but his apologies for being weird died on his tongue when you cut him off, speaking through a cheeky smile. Youngest star - despite being a nurturing star, they are actually the youngest. Very optimistic and overly attached to their duties, falling as they did was devastating for them. They do greatly admire the world they've fallen to but deeply mourn the idea that their planet could have been like this one day if they hadn't if tripped. They have the easiest time blending into the local population despite being enthralled with them. They grow things with complete ease but are quite surprised at a talent for healing. Gardens grow in cycles after all, not much reason to doctor a lush forest.

Young star - a bit more wise, they do still deeply mourn what they've lost and the knowledge that the planet they cared for is now very dead without them. They console themselves with the idea that they could perhaps learn from this new planet. Who knows, they could find a way back and take this new knowledge to revive and grow their planet better than ever! They're pretty good at blending but some old habits die hard. They've got a knack for healing but growing is their primary skill.

Borrego Springs Palm Canyon Oasis Hike –

Hike in the California desert with me, visit a natural palm oasis, tortured Anza Borrego badlands, and savor a colorful desert sunset. Spending time outdoors is the ultimate wellness activity; learn how to incorporate natural lifestyle optimization into your mind, body, and spirit.  

Borrego Springs is a little village in the desert east of San Diego.  It’s in San Diego county, and since it lacks freeway and commercial air traffic, it’s like what Palm Springs was back in the 1920s: just a sleepy little village in the desert.  Surrounded by the Anza Borrego State Park on all sides, it is a haven for hikers, cyclists, and off-road enthusiasts of all kinds.  The drive from Indian Wells takes about an hour and twenty minutes, and is an enjoyable day-trip from the Coachella Valley.

We stop for a moment to appreciate the rugged beauty of the Anza Borrego Badlands, the name for an area that cannot sustain human life.  The jagged canyons and washes create a tortured, but beautiful landscape.  We are nearing Borrego Springs as we drive through the vast Anza Borrego State Park, which includes a fifth of San Diego County, and is the largest State Park in California.

Our trail today is the Palm Canyon Trail, just north of the village of Borrego Springs.

It begins at the base of a vast alluvial fan, more commonly known as a cove here in the desert. Formed by eons of snowmelt and rainwater rushing down the mountains during our brief, but intense rainy periods.  

Back at the trailhead is the perfect spot to sit and watch the colorful desert sunset over the Borrego Valley.  All the different layers of the clouds catch the colorful golden, orange, and purple hues one by one. Here, I have sped up the video to feature the movement of the clouds and changing colors.  In person it looks static, but in a time lapse you can see the graceful motion as the clouds move across the sky.
