Only including areas with canonical established villages or places where people are known to live full time, nowhere people just pass through like Djose or The Moonflow, Thunder Plains or Macalania.

[ wipe ] sender wipes away receiver's tears. To Kanata, FFX AU.
After they left Besaid, Kanata had spent some time alone. The people waving goodbye to them had been the villagers, but far from all of them. The Temple had one representative present, no one else had showed up, especially not Kanata's father.
Inside of him, he could feel Valefor stirring as she curled up on herself, deep in slumber until summoned. It was like she had carved out a tiny place for herself inside his mind, and therefore he guessed he was never really alone anymore.
It still felt lonely.
With arms still bruised from the very last time him and his father... Talked, Kanata leaned against the railing of the ship, staring out across the water. It brought him comfort, he had always been drawn to the water after all, ever since he was a little boy. His chest felt... Tight. So, so tight.
At the soft sound of footsteps, he turned around, coming face to face with Rei.
"Have you seen, Rei...? How the stars are reflected upon the ocea--" Kanata cut himself off, eyes widening slightly as Rei's hand reached for his face, fingertips brushing at something wet on Kanata's cheeks. Oh. Oh. He had been crying? He had been crying.
"I... I'm sorry. I..."

was does yuna smell like? does she wear perfume? would any particular scents remind people of her?
my general idea is that in the early stages of her life — when kimahri brings her to besaid and she grows up with lulu & wakka — she does not wear any particular perfume, but her natural scent is either very sweet from all the perfumes used in the temples or something that recalls the ocean, the general easygoing life spent at seaside.
although that smell is pressed onto her throughout most of her life, when she abandons her village life and is off to be a sphere hunter, that's when she starts wearing perfume, but she makes sure that whichever it is is as close as she can remember to what besaid was like. it's not as evident for it tends to be a more artificial and perhaps even more delicate than it was originally, but there's that note about it that you can recognize if paid attention to. ambrosial would be the word i'd use, some hints of vanilla here and there.
at the later stages of her life — when she returns to bevelle and upholds her high summoner duties — she tends to adapt herself completely to the city without entirely noticing, and so she begins to wear a more stingy perfume — it is a tad more heavy and it carries the memories of roses perhaps, surely a fragrance that makes her a woman of bevelle through and through, although there's still that retroaspect of it, something that if you were to catch the scent of would have you question if it was roses all along and not, perhaps, a sweeter flower underneath instead. it comes off as rich in a first moment, but the feeling that sits in your throat is pleasant. i think of bevelle as an unforgiving city, and yuna kinda lets herself be encapsulated by its arrogance, by its.. hiding in plain sight maliciousness? and it reflects in the high society of it and in my head all higher ranking figures have this very distinctive smell to them, and with time i think she lets herself have this one as well, although without totally losing her personality in it.
#tbt.#on: yuna.#i hope this made sense somewhat! !!!!#i'm so bad at describing scents actually.. ..#but oh!! this was so pleasant to find in my inbox i wanted to answer it so much! !!!!!#thank you for sending this one in and asking about her. ;o ;;;;#also i'm always on my bevelle hater bs ofc ofc

Roughly a year after the events of X-2, Dona and Barthello finally get married. It's a small ceremony, nothing fancy, Dona's not one for theatrics. Initially, they invited what was left of both their families, plus a few close friends.
However, despite Dona trying to keep it on the down low as much as possible, the residents of Kilika found out anyway, and throw her a party regardless. It's a relatively small village and word got out from one source or another (looking at you Barthello). I've always pictured Besaid and Kilika celebrating weddings, births, deaths, etc. as a whole community, considering they're quite small. We see it with Yuna obtaining Valefor in Besaid, Wakka introducing Vidina in Besaid, all the families being reunited in Kilika. Weddings, funerals, festivals, births; they're a whole village thing.
Anyways Barthello popped the question not long after the events of X-2, a couple weeks after things had settled down and they'd started getting back into a routine. Dona said yes, but with the caveat that things calmed down a lot more in Kilika before they actually had the ceremony. Being separated from each other because of their opposing political factions truly made them (mainly Dona) realise how much they cared for each other. Realising she'd taken him for granted in the past couple of years helped her properly reconcile with the fact that she really did love him. Barthello's her best friend and she couldn't imagine her life without him, political ideologies be damned.
There had been moments of tenderness, compassion, and love between them before all this, Barthello had been her closest companion for years. He'd been her friend since she was a teenager, agreed to be her Guardian and help her defeat Sin (even at the expense of both their lives), they'd been together romantically for years beforehand. They've been in each others orbit for so long, that Dona had just grown accustomed to him always being there for her. Their split during X-2 truly made her realise just how much she loved and cherished him. She's never been one for overly grand gestures or flowery words of appreciation, it makes her feel awkward and self-conscious. The thought of not being by his side for the rest of her life made her incredibly sad.

[ rain ] // yuna, @somethingxgreater
𝑫𝑰𝑭𝑭𝑬𝑹𝑬𝑵𝑻 𝑾𝑨𝒀𝑺 𝑻𝑶 𝑲𝑰𝑺𝑺 𝑺𝑶𝑴𝑬𝑶𝑵𝑬.
He really hadn't felt it was appropriate to talk about what his life was like in his teenage years. Or even what it was like altogether back in his world. But here they were engaging in conversion about it. But Sephiroth supposed he felt safe to share that information with her. But also, Yuna seemed to smile at him as though she enjoyed hearing what it was like for him. As most people would call it, 'when he was a kid'. In fact. she seemed thankful and that was something that was to send even him a few mental paces backward. But that was out of for the state of shock on his end.
In that moment or at first Sephiroth thought he imagined droplets starting to fall. Strange. Considering earlier and all day the weather was warm and sunny. He'd even spotted a rainbow along their walks. It was much more lively here in Spira than it was in Midgar. But that's not saying he particularly disliked it there completely--per say. Recalling today's earlier events, he could say he actually had a pleasant time. Besaid Village appeared to be especially personal to Yuna. It wasn't all something that he couldn't particularly comprehend. And so, when he decided they scooch along for shelter to shield the both of them from the rain. It didn't really seem to help much given how he was forced to think on his feet. The sound of thunder came rolling in--He nor Yuna seemed deterred away. The idea to kiss in the rain sprung to action within his head. Usually he didn't consider himself one for cliches. Especially when it comes to romance. He could budge, just this once. At first, he thought she may have objected. Especially when even though he did not necessary admit it, he didn't want to see her colorful and brilliant hakama, and her sash to be ruined due to it. He couldn't exactly pin point it, but there was this flare and essence about it that captured Yuna's soul and uniqueness. Maybe he was reading too much off into it. It made his feelings no less valid. There was no defeat about it. Both of his hands gripped hers, he stepped from out of their little shelter which from underneath the canopy that they briefly stood under. More and more droplets began to dampen, and eventually wet their hair and clothing from the raining. Their skin and all. There's an effortless magic to it. A spell that hexed and further had to have proven to surge him forth. And he didn't fight it, learning forward Sephiroth met her height as he could, and eventually he always did. His lips met hers in a soft clash. An almost gasp heard between just two when their oxygen competed and both clung onto their lungs. Fingers laced, his hands wandered along to smooth along and then tuck a few of her hairs back out from her face. The taste of her lips instantly metabolized the salt against his tongue. Instantly becomes sugar. Or maybe the spark of all this made him imagine it so.

Oh you >:P
Snippet under the cut, it's from my 'FFX AU' for twewy :V
(Emoji from the ask game here)
(Context here; Neku's the summoner)
The villagers bow as they walk by making idle conversation, but it’s with a hushed, choked energy that they’re escorted through the streets, and into the jungles beyond, a few muttered ‘good luck, Lord Summoner’ thrown his way, but no one approaches.
It’s as if his body is already a coffin, and Eri and Shiki are his pallbearers.
He can still feel the weight of Besaid’s eyes on his back even after he’s walked out of the gate to the village and onto the first official steps of his pilgrimage.
- And a second one, just because I like it -
Their pace slows, ultimately pausing at the monument, Eri and Shiki standing a respectable distance away while Neku takes one last look at what had been his home, if only in location if nothing else, body instinctively moving to perform Yevon’s prayer even as his mind was still focused on the long journey ahead of him.
The important parts that made Besaid actually home were already travelling with him, after all.
Seeing it from so high up, on the verge of leaving it, possibly for good, he realises just how small Besaid truly is. How much humanity has had to cram itself along shorelines and carve out tiny existences, like fearful Djose monkeys, at least until the next Calm.
Determination ignites in his chest. Not for the temple or the priests, he didn’t care what they thought about him doing this, but for the people, his neighbours and community, despite their othering of him, trying their best to carve out an existence that could be wiped in an instant.
‘I’ll do it, just watch me. The Calm will come by my hand.’ he vows, looking out over small huts and the distant figures of people. He’ll make them turn and acknowledge him.
He thinks, even Yevon Himself could hear his resolve.

Hearing that was like sacrilege to the elderly, the older woman clutching her chest as if Seifer had just dunked a rag in sewer water and washed her mother's mouth out with it. "Have you no shame?!" her voice was worn, tired, "she's the daughter of Lord Braska! He entrusted us with the Calm 10 years ago, heathen! You ought to show her some respect and address her by title."
Yuna laughs nervously and fidgets with her fingers near her lap, clearly uncomfortable with the sudden spectacle she was becoming.
Well. If the woman wanted to antagonize one of her guardians, Yuna had her own means of protecting them. "Please, heed not what my guardian says or does. If he were to speak poorly or cause grief, I take full responsibly on his behalf." she sweetly retorts, adding, "…and, he does not have to address me by anything other than Yuna, right?" she turns on her heel to face Seifer, letting out a couple fits of giggles due to the outraged expression contorting their aggressor's face.
The elderly woman backed down, silently cursing at herself for sassing a guardian. She mumbles something under her breath about teenagers not respecting their elders, then heads in another direction as the rest of the village creates a divide for Yuna and Seifer to pass through.
"…My father," Yuna began, "he faced Sin, ten years ago, and ushered in a new Calm for the people of Spira.
"When I was young, I always held an affinity for the summoner's arts, and so, I practiced and practiced until…yesterday, when I became a full-fledged Summoner," or rather, when she defied Lulu, Kimahri's, and Wakka's refusal to allow her to enter the chamber of the fayth, "They said I was a prodigy because of the healing I was able to perform as a child. But, really. It was because of my father, you know…" she smiles, her up at him again before finally catching up to the group.
"I'd love to talk to you more sometime, if that's alright? There are so many things I want to ask you." she bows her head to him and makes a beeline for Lulu, who had already placed a hand on the young summoner's head and tousled her hair.
"Alright! We make our way through Besaid Falls and test our summoner's training, ya? Hehe...Looks like we picked ourselves a merry band, eh?" Wakka tried to make the light of things while Lulu was still vexed he found not one, but two outsiders who Yuna now had slipped beneath her wing.
"Look sharp. Eyes focused." mostly a swipe at Tidus, seeing as he was lollygagging and goofing around.
"Let me at 'em." Tidus fist pumps.
"Strength, everyone." Yuna performs the prayer and ventures forward.
Well, she must be popular-- Seifer comes out to see her surrounded by what looks like the whole damn village. No wonder she needs like fifteen guardians.
He observes her, how she interacts; he can hear snatches of conversation as he gets closer, Yuna's laughter. She spots him, and takes her polite leave of the little gathering.
Seifer meets her halfway, squinting in the sun and wishing he'd managed to fall through time and space with a pair of fucking sunglasses. He turns his back to the crowd, angled slightly so he's no longer blinded; if anyone complains about him being rude, well. Fuck 'em.
He's not here to make friends with strangers.
"What are you, some kind of celebrity?"

More glimpses of Spira from noclip.
I just discovered the houses in Besaid Village have wicker screens that can be erected to block off the doors just inside their entrances at night, providing a bit of a porch for shedding wet clothes (It must get a lot of rain; every house has a rainbarrel on the roof.)
Also, I've been providing these without commentary so you can look at the images and discover things on your own,but a few observations on previous photosets:
In the Crusader's Lodge, there's a map of Spira. You've probably caught that, but what I hadn't noticed was the sword rack on the other side of that divider wall, or the inkwell and pen on the "innkeeper" desk. There's also a couple spear racks and the Crusader banner, and piles of food and drink stores against the wall by Gatta's desk.
That ruin on the path from Besaid Village where Kimahri jumps down to haze Tidus? The roots sprawling all over it are really spectacular.
In the Aurochs' Luca locker room, in addition to the ball rack, there's a shelf with folded towels and some binders/books: one is named "SPORTS"; I haven't worked out the others. Also there's posters for past tournaments between the Aurochs and various teams including the Bevelle Bells. And, to my disappointment, I was finally able to read the names on the lockers, but they're just things like Xcdef Yghij Zklmn in Spiran script.

Maester Mika's ship has paddlewheels as well as sails.
The street vender in Luca Square, who I believe was Al Bhed, has Luca Goers and Al Bhed Psyches t-shirts for sale. a "blitzball" magazine, baseball caps, team posters and pennants.
Rin's Travel Agency offers "Free Rooms." Does that mean "rooms available," or does the Church of Yevon subsidize an Al Bhed businessman to keep couriers and other travelers from being killed by fiends? The latter sounds like typical Yevon hypocrisy and a nice racket for Rin.
After Operation Mi'ihen fails, the Al Bhed's ginormous laser canon (same kind of guns Cid fits on the airship) lies broken across the lefthand side of the beach; Auron's standing in its shadow. Right after the disaster, there's corpses or something blocking the way so you can't go back, but soon that barrier is removed so you can use the fallen gun as a ramp up to Mushroom Rock Road.
The shoopuf's body is dimly visible underwater. (In general, anytime there's something visible underwater, or there's a reflection, it's actually a complete model on the other side of the water/glass, flipped if it needs to be a mirror image.)
Is Macalania Temple another airship?
When the party falls through the ice at Macalania Lake, they land on the miscellaneous debris stuck on Sin's head. From above, you can see its two fins looming in the background.
In Bevelle, the chamber where the guard pushes Tidus into the water side of the Via Purifico also has the gate to Yuna's side and the door to Jecht's cell. if Braska hadn't freed Jecht, that might've been where he was headed.
The Tower of Light of Bevelle, atop which Yuna's wedding took place, rises up behind Bevelle's main gates, visible from the Highbridge.
Yojimbo's Fayth is sealed with ribbons that read "Seal."
If you've ever seen a fayth statue of Jecht, it's a phenomenal piece of fanart that's been floating around on the web for over a decade. It's not in-game.

So a couple days back I decided to replay FFX for the sole reason of getting overpowered early game and obliterating the rest of the storyline, and though I wasn’t planning on paying attention to the cutscenes this time around I guess I’m just magnetically attracted to the game’s story. And I don’t know if it’s simply because I’m (slightly) older than when I first played it, that I’ve since discovered my sexuality and gender identity, that I no longer consider myself Christian and instead flip-flop between agnostic and atheist, or a combination of everything, but holy shit, Yevon’s even more corrupt than I remember them being. And I haven’t even gotten Ifrit yet.
The main thing that stuck with me is when you first arrive in Besaid temple and Tidus lies to the priest about being affected by Sin’s toxins, to which the priest gives his condolences. It isn’t the first time Tidus has told someone that he was apparently affected by the toxins, and by that point it seems it would have at least gotten around to a majority of the village (especially considering all the people within the temple looking at Tidus weird). Everyone Tidus tells shows sympathy for him at first, but when Tidus goes into the Cloister of Trials to rescue Yuna, A. the priest tells him not to go in but doesn’t do anything to physically stop him, and B. Tidus proceeds to be shunned by the entire village despite people probably already knowing he’s ‘affected by the toxins’ which has been known to make people act funny. They showed sympathy for them, but the moment he went against their religion’s words for, what they knew, was because of something out of his control, they turned against him. The priest could’ve tried to stop him, anybody in the temple could’ve tried to stop him, knowing that the toxins were apparently still in his system, but Wakka was the only one who actually did so.
Maybe it’s just because I’m trans and I’ve seen time and time again ‘good Christians’ pretending to care about trans people’s mental health as a way to dehumanize them, but the entire ordeal really stuck out to me. Surface-level sympathy - towards basically any type of minority or even other types of religion - is something hardly new to religion, especially Christianity, but the way FFX handles it is one of the more subtle ways it criticizes religion and I don’t think I’ve ever seen this part of the game talked about. It isn’t a one-to-one comparison, sure - the people of Besaid seemed to show some genuine pity for Tidus and then did a complete 180 after the incident in the temple, meanwhile real life surface level sympathy from religion is almost never genuine to begin with - but I thought there were at least some similarities.
I do like to overanalyze things and I have a massive projecting problem, so to the two people who read this, this could all be coincidental. I just thought it was an interesting observation.

Saw a joke post in the tag about how the plot of ffx could be solved if everyone just moved a kilometer inland which is funny and true but it really made me think about how the Japan/SE Asia inspired setting really adds a layer of weight to the idea of a society plagued by an eternal cycle of mostly ocean-based disasters.
I remember replaying the game when the HD remake came out in 2014. There's an npc in Besaid who tells you that the temple faces toward the village so it doesn't have to look out on the sea, where Sin comes from. It was the first time I'd played since 3/11 and I felt my stomach drop like.
Oh.
#final fantasy x#i remember reading an article when prepping fir my class too that mentiond how the deaths in operation mihen#where the people just turn to ash#recall the imagery of a nuclear bomb#and the heavy and unsubtle implication that the war between zanarkand and bevelle involved some kind of weapons of mass destruction#something something processing cultural trauma through popular media#this setting man. nobody is doing it like this
