Hacking my arm prosthesis to output CV so that it plugs into my synth: Thought-controlled music!

Together with Chrisi from KOMA Elektronik and my husband Daniel, I am in the process of building a device (the "SynLimb") that attaches to my arm prosthesis instead of the prosthetic hand. The SynLimb converts the electrode signals that my prosthesis picks up from my residual limb into control voltages (CV) for controlling my modular synthesizer. The SynLimb thus allows me to plug my prosthesis directly into my snythesizer so that I can control its parameters with the signals from my body that normally control the hand. For me, this feels like controlling the synth with my thoughts. I show the prototype(s), explain how we put it together and how it works, and do a little demo.

Potrzeba matką wynalazku - nowoczesne protezy i inwencja twórcza

Protezy towarzyszą nam jako gatunkowi od tysięcy lat. Właściwie od zawsze tracimy kończyny i naturalnym jest, że chcemy chociaż w pewnym stopniu przywrócić sobie funkcjonalność, którą one zapewniały. Drewniane palce i nogi, żelazne ręce, gałki oczne wykończone złotem, wszystkie te elementy powstały setki, a nawet tysiące lat temu. Wraz z postępem techniki i technologii znacznie zwiększyło się zaawansowanie protez. Filmy i książki z gatunku science-fiction często przedstawiają korzystających z protez, które znacznie przewyższają możliwościami nasze zwykłe kończyny. Z biegiem czasu takie perspektywy stają się coraz bardziej realne, co prowokuje niezliczone dyskusje na temat moralności protez. Jednak nie ten aspekt protez chciałem poruszyć. Nadal ideałem, do którego kompletnego odwzorowania staramy się dotrzeć pozostają ludzkie kończyny. Jednak nasz organizm wydaje się być o wiele bardziej skomplikowany do odwzorowania niż te przedstawiane we wszelakich filmach, więc czemu powinniśmy się ograniczać? Chciałbym przybliżyć sylwetki dwóch osób korzystających z protez. W obu przypadkach są to protezy rąk i oba wyłamują się z kanonu jakim jest wygląd i funkcjonalność ludzkiej kończyny.  

Bertolt Meyer jest 43 letnim mężczyzną z Niemiec. Bertolt urodził się bez lewego przedramienia w wyniku czego korzysta z protezy. Jak sam mówi sprawdza się ona świetnie we wszystkich codziennych czynnościach. Narzędzie za pomocą elektrod wyłapuje sygnały wysyłane przez mięśnie Bertolta, dzięki czemu może on przekręcać nadgarstek oraz chwytać przedmioty. Jak wspomniałem w czynnościach codziennych ta funkcjonalność jest w pełni wystarczająca, jednak schody pojawiają się w przypadku realizowania jego pasji. Bertolt kocha tworzyć muzykę, czemu poświęca swój wolny czas, jednak korzystanie z syntezatora wymaga od niego zarówno szybkiej reakcji jak i sporej precyzji - do czego jego zastępcza ręka nie jest zdolna. Aby ominąć te ograniczenia zdecydował się na zmodyfikowanie protezy. Przy pomocy specjalnie zaprojektowanej płyty głównej oraz części ze starego syntezatora zbudował element, który może zamontować zamiast swojej syntetycznej dłoni, gdy tylko chce tworzyć muzykę. Urządzenie, tak jak normalna proteza, odczytuje impulsy wysyłane przez nerwy, które przemianowuje na napięcie. To w połączeniu z zamontowanym wejściem Jack pozwala kontrolować szeroką gamę syntezatorów. Jak sam przyznaje operowanie w taki sposób wymagało trochę praktyki, jednak obecnie opisuje to jako coś absolutnie naturalnego i dającego więcej kontroli niż posługiwanie się pokrętłami i przyciskami. Jego proteza chociaż całkowicie odchodzi funkcjonalnością i wyglądem od dłoni człowieka, pozwala na większe spełnienie i wyrażenie się artystycznie, a ponadto może być zamontowana, gdy tylko tego potrzebuje.  

Tilly na co dzień prowadzi kanał na youtube, gdzie publikuje poradniki związane z pięknem i makijażem. Oglądając jej filmy naszą uwagę od razu przyciągają bioniczne z których korzysta nastolatka i jak sama przyznaje chce tego. Ręce Tilly musiały zostać amputowane, gdy ta miała zaledwie 15 miesięcy w celu zatrzymania zagrażającej życiu infekcji. Gdy dorastała rynek protez dziecięcych nie był dobrze rozwinięty, a kiedy Tilly wystarczająco podrosła protezy, które dostała nie spełniały jej oczekiwań. Wyglądem starały się odwzorować ludzkie ręce, jednak wyróżniały się na tyle aby przyciągać spojrzenia, które powodowały dyskomfort u dziewczyny. Ponadto Tilly czuła, że to właśnie wyglądowi było poświęcone więcej uwagi przez co ich funkcjonalność odbiegała znacząco od wystarczającego poziomu. Te wszystkie wady w połączeniu z wysoką ceną sprawiły, że nastolatka zrezygnowała z dotychczasowych realistycznych protez na rzecz produktu o wiele bardziej futurystycznego. Jej nowe ręce mają bardzo mechaniczny design, wyposażone są w diody i lampy LED a ponadto mają wymienne obudowy pozwalające na wybranie koloru zależnie od tego na co obecnie ma ochotę. Jak już wspominałem ręce przyciągają uwagę, jednak tym razem nie są to spojrzenia współczucia a nadziei i radości, jak opisuje to nastolatka. Poprzez korzystanie z tak wyróżniających się protez Tilly stara się dodać pewności siebie innym osobom z niepełnosprawnościami. Jednak nie robi tego tylko dla innych, sama przyznaje, że czuje się z nimi świetnie i jest to forma celebracji odmienności i bycia sobą.

Jeszcze długo nie będziemy w stanie zaoferować kompletnie odwzorowanych kończyn ludziom którzy je stracili. Jednak jesteśmy w stanie dać im coś, co dla wielu całkowicie wystarcza a nawet oferuje więcej. Piękno niestandardowych proces nie wynika z ich niesamowitych funkcji czy porywającego wyglądu. Są to narzędzia których używanie daje komfort, narzędzia które pozwalają na ekspresję i nie ograniczają osób z nich korzystających.Coś, co akceptujemy jako część nas.

Corona-Stress. Wie Sie sich frischer und entspannter fühlen.

Wie umgehen mit dem Stress in der Pandemie? Wenn die Belastung zu groß wird, kann Yoga und Meditation helfen – verbunden mit ein paar anderen Tricks.

Berlin. Wie sehr die Corona-Pandemie die Menschen in Deutschland belastet, ist bereits mehrfach untersucht worden. Zuletzt berichteten Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer einer Studie der Universität des Saarlandes von Stress, steigender emotionaler Erschöpfung und depressiven Symptomen. Im Vergleich zum ersten Lockdown 2020 habe sich die Situation deutlich verschärft.

Professor Bertolt Meyer, Arbeits- und Wirtschaftspsychologe an der Technischen Universität in Chemnitz, wollte mehr wissen: Von April bis Juli 2020 analysierten er und sein Team nicht nur, was den Menschen während des ersten Lockdowns Probleme bereitete, sondern auch, was ihnen half, Stress und Belastungen zu verringern.

Nach der bundesweiten Befragung von 2900 Männern und Frauen kamen sie zu folgenden Ergebnissen: Das eigene Gesundheitsverhalten, die sogenannte Selbstsorge, hatte am effektivsten die emotionale Erschöpfung verringern können, gefolgt von sozialer Unterstützung in Partnerschaft und Umfeld.

Stress in der Pandemie: Nicht jeder bemerkt es

Das eigene Verhalten also: "Menschen, die in Bezug auf ihre Gesundheit über ein hohes Maß an Aufmerksamkeit verfügen, bemerken eher, wenn sie sich überlasten. Sie denken über mögliche Ursachen nach und leiten daraus Verhaltensweisen ab, die der körperlichen und geistigen Gesundheit guttun", kommentierte die Techniker Krankenkasse die Studie aus Chemnitz.

Wer hingegen ein geringes Gesundheitsbewusstsein habe, bemerke oft gar nicht oder zu spät, wann er oder sie einer Entwicklung gegensteuern müsse. Gegensteuern. Aber wie?

Eine Antwort auf die Frage, was Wohlbefinden und Stress im Alltag nachweisbar beeinflussen können, liefert eine weitere Studie der TU Chemnitz. Psychologin Karin Matko hat dabei untersucht, was eine Kombination aus körperlichem und geistigem Training, von Yoga und Meditation, bewirken kann. Die Studie ist als Preprint erschienen und befindet sich aktuell im Prozess der Begutachtung.

Die dritte Gruppe machte Yoga und meditierte ohne Bezug zu spirituellen Grundlagen, die vierte kombinierte alles – Yoga, Meditation, Ethik und Selbstreflexion. Täglich wurden die über 40 Studienteilnehmer online befragt. Einmal pro Woche gab es ein Treffen samt Übungen und Gesprächen.

Das Wohlbefinden, berichtet die Psychologin, sei vor allem bei jenen Probanden gestiegen, die Meditation mit Selbstreflexion kombiniert hatten. Sie hatten sich mit negativen Verhaltensmustern beschäftigt sowie der Frage, wie sich diese ändern ließen. "Diese Menschen fühlten sich frischer und entspannter. Ihre Tage waren häufiger von Freude und interessanten Dinge erfüllt", berichtet Matko.

Der Stresslevel hingegen sei am stärksten bei jenen Menschen gesunken, die Yoga und Meditation kombiniert hatten. "Es ist erwiesen, dass Yoga eine sehr beruhigende Wirkung hat, auch auf das vegetative Nervensystem", sagt Matko. Ihre Studie habe hier die Erkenntnisse anderer Untersuchungen bestätigt.

Yoga und Corona: "Scheint sehr gut zu passen"

Dass viele der Probanden auch ein Jahr nach Ende der Studie dem Yoga treu geblieben waren, wie Nachbefragungen zeigten, hat selbst Matko überrascht. Die Übungen hätten offenbar auf viele Menschen einen direkten, unmittelbaren Einfluss. "Yoga scheint sehr gut zu den aktuellen Bedürfnissen unserer Gesellschaft zu passen. Man merkt schnell, dass es dem Körper besser geht", so die Psychologin.

Stress mit Corona: Was noch hilft

In Zeiten von Lockdown-Stress und -Erschöpfung wirbt auch Karin Matko dafür, sich gut zu beobachten und bewusst Pausen einzulegen.

Wenn die Konzentration im Homeoffice abschweife oder die erzwungene Vermischung von Job und Familie die Nerven überstrapaziere, könnten Yogaübungen oder kurze Meditationen den Geist entlasten. Matko: "Die Arbeitspsychologie empfiehlt einmal pro Stunde, also alle 55 bis 60 Minuten, eine Kurzpause von etwa fünf Minuten."

For me, this feels like controlling the synth with my thoughts. I show the prototype(s), explain how we put it together and how it works, and do a little demo.

In one way this is obvious. There is very little difference between sending electrical signals from the brain to the hand and then using the hand to control the synthesizer and sending electrical signals from the brain through the artificial hand directly to the synthesizer. As Meyer notes the whole process feels very natural. The fact that it is obvious and natural will make adoption very quick.

Ruth Berlau

Ruth Berlau war Journalistin, Schauspielerin am Königlichen Theater in Kopenhagen, Gründerin und Leiterin eines Arbeitertheaters, Frau eines wohlhabenden Arztes und - 1930 war sie der dänischen KP beigetreten - in Dänemark bekannt als die “rote Ruth”. Dann begegnete sie 1933 auf der dänischen Insel Thuro bei Karin Michaelis Bertolt Brecht. “Daß ich ihn da schon liebte, wußte ich nicht”, notiert Ruth Berlau später. “Lehren ohne Schüler / Schreiben ohne Ruhm / Ist schwer” beschrieb Brecht damals seine Situation im Exil.

Ruth Berlau wird seine Schülerin “Lai-tu”, der “Me-ti”, der Lehrer, “moralisches Verhalten beizubringen” versucht. Sie wird, nach Elisabeth Hauptmann und Margarethe Steffin, seine wichtigste Mitarbeiterin und bleibt, nach Helene Weigel, am längsten mit ihm zusammen. Sie sorgt für die Übersetzung seiner Stücke und inszeniert sie in Dänemark. 1939 reist Brecht über Schweden, Finnland und Rußland in die Vereinigten Staaten. Aus Finnland schreibt er ihr: “Ich rechne nicht wegen Dir auf Dein Kommen, sondern wegen mir, Ruth”. Und Ruth kommt, sie trennt sich von ihrem Mann, verzichtet auf ihre finanzielle Unabhängigkeit und geht mit ihm ins Exil.

Ein Jahr lang lebt sie in der Nähe von Brecht und Helene Weigel in Santa Monica, 1942 nimmt sie an einem Frauenkongreß in Washington teil, dann reist die Journalistin und Antifaschistin weiter nach New York und findet Arbeit im Office of War Information. “Ich schrieb an Brecht, daß ich in New York eine Möglichkeit zum Arbeiten habe. Mir war auch wichtig, daß ich unabhängig bin und meinen Lebensunterhalt selbst verdiene und nicht immer als Anhängsel Brechts behandelt werde.” Aber Brecht besucht sie auch in New York, er ist auf seine Mitarbeiterin angewiesen, die seine Theaterarbeit auch in Amerika unermüdlich mit ihrer kleinen Leica dokumentiert. 1944 kommt in Los Angeles der gemeinsame Sohn Michel zu früh auf die Welt und stirbt wenige Tage später.

Zurück in Europa, gründen Weigel und Brecht 1948 das “Berliner Ensemble”. Berlau wird mit dem Aufbau eines Archivs betraut. “Eine Sisyphusarbeit”, erinnert sie sich später. Daß Brecht 1950 ihre Beziehung “versachlichen” will, verkraftet sie nicht. Sie leidet an Depressionen. 1951 bietet sie Peter Suhrkamp die 1940 erstmals erschienenen Erzählungen Jedes Tier kann es zur Publikation an. “Hier bin ich halt für die Leute Brechts Freundin, die einmal sehr schön war. Jetzt aber sucht Brecht junges Fleisch. Meine Arbeit ist mir schließlich - jetzt da ich vierundvierzig Jahre alt bin - das Wichtigste. Ich will nicht mehr fotografieren ... Ich will schreiben und Regie führen. Das ist mein Fach, mein Beruf. Das kann ich!” Nach Brechts Tod 1956 kündigt das Berliner Ensemble ihren Arbeitsvertrag, sie erhält Hausverbot. Am 16. Januar 1974 kommt Ruth Berlau in ihrem Krankenbett in der Charité ums Leben, sie war mit einer brennenden Zigarette eingeschlafen - dieselbe Todesursache wie bei Ingeborg Bachmann ein Vierteljahr zuvor.

Ihre “Sisyphusarbeit” wurde erst posthum gewürdigt. Unter anderem erschien 2003 der von Grischa Meyer herausgegebene Fotoband Ruth Berlau: Fotografin an Brechts Seite. Aus den 235 Mappen mit ihren Rohabzügen und Negativen, die im Archiv des Berliner Ensembles schlummerten, hat er einen Schatz gehoben: ein einzigartiges Dokument der Fotografie- und Kulturgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts.
