“So That’s Raven?” acrylic on canvas Raven Symoné is an American actress, singer, songwriter, model, and television personality. She first appeared on television in 1989 on The Cosby Show as Olivia Kendall and later starred in the Disney Channel series, That's So Raven from 2003 to 2007 In a 2014 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Raven-Symoné said, "I don't want to be labeled gay, I want to be a human who loves humans. I'm tired of being labeled, I'm an American. I'm not an African-American; I'm an American. I don’t know what country in Africa I’m from, but I do know that my roots are in Louisiana. I’m American. And that’s a colorless person…” Raven-Symone obviously loves her Americanness. America made her wealthy and famous. But America also marginalizes her. If she wasn’t a famous television star, she’d have been the girl scrutinized for her “unusual” hair and “non-traditional” name. She’d be stared at for walking down the street holding her girlfriend’s hand. She’d be an other. “Isotopes” ... acrylic on canvas Set of four Isotopes are atoms which share the same name and chemical properties, but have different masses. Isotopes also have the same number of protons and electrons, but a different number of neutrons. Similar to people, you can think of protons and neutrons as the same kind of particle with one key difference: the protons are positively charged, while neutrons carry no electrical charge. This means protons can “feel” electric or magnetic fields, while neutrons cannot. In December of 2016 I lost my proton, my father Clarence Artis. I suddenly felt as if I was the neutron, devoid of electrical charge after witnessing the molecular structure of my family destabilize. Isotopes is my creative interpretation of the gradual reduction of man into subatomic particles. Shout out to my fellow artist @nati_dmod for coming out and supporting! Teamed up with the Urban Enrichment Institute formerly known as the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program at the Houston Museum of African American Culture @houstonmaac to give a personal tour and artist talk to a great group of young men. Hats off to actor Rutherford Cravens (featured in the blockbuster movie Get Out) and filmmaker Cayn James @caynite for making this happen! These gentlemen spend their spare time teaching film and entrepreneurship to the kids at UEI in an effort to make a positive impact in the community! Prime example of how art WORKS! Teamed up with the Urban Enrichment Institute formerly known as the Fifth Ward Enrichment Program and @caynite and @3rdeyeartisan and @houstonmaac to make a difference in the lives of inner city youth! It was great these young cats learning about who they truly are and how important culture is. Here are the kids getting a real simulated version of the Sandra Bland traffic stop. If at all possible please share. I’ll be at HMAAC this Saturday from 11a to 3pm (I’ll stay longer if need be) giving tours and discussing my artwork. So far it’s been great and my intentions of creating dialogue and coming up with ideas and resolutions to change some of the things that plague our societies seems to be working, but it’s far from over. I encourage everyone to share and persuade as many people as you can to come out so we can TALK like we used to and make a real difference. You’d be surprised at how many kids have no idea how to handle some of the situations that are thrown at them.
