Late Carboniferous scene, G. B. Bertelli
When the air is still, soaked in the swamp's humidity, the only sound is that of the meganeurids' wings beating against it. It is like the gentle noise of paper rattling in the wind, or breaths shivering against the throat.
But to the swamp's the smaller insects, the beat of those wings is like the roar of thunder, a buzzsaw that warns them to retreat under leaves, under logs, under water. Bugs freeze, flies flee, and silverfish slither into shadows when the meganeurids pound the skies with those French chapel wings. Those who ignore the warning are snatched and devoured before they know they are dead.

They had work to do...money to collect for those who agreed to their terms for protection. It was a shakedown, and they knew it, but if it was something they would do to keep the lowlife thugs away then they'd have no issue. Gianni pulled up alongside the Scarlatta's home, getting himself out of the car and knocking on their door.
"Come on out, kid we got money to collect."

911 Lone Star Music Monday
Somehow I slipped and fell into a hole of melancholy— these songs I came across brought to mind more bittersweet and complicated character dynamics in the 9-1-1 verse. Mostly relating to one mom character though, won’t name names because I’ll mention it down below (if you know, you know— if not, this post is going to generally spoil most of 9-1-1 and all of 9-1-1 Lone Star). But I figured out how to post to the Music Mondays tag now! 😅
You could interchange both the narrator and the little girl with anyone— in the case of both Lone Star and the og 9-1-1 though, here’s my list of character dynamics that could relate to this song: Owen mourning Gwyn and/ or melancholically marveling at little TK; TK addressing Gwyn; Carlos and Gabriel addressing each other; Michelle’s dynamic with Iris as they grow up together, and then (kind of) apart; Nancy and her mother addressing each other (at least, that’s my headcanon); Paul and Naomi further making peace with each other (whether or not Naomi succumbs to her MS); the Buckley parents lamenting the time they wasted mourning their first child over being healthily present for their two children, or Chimney’s father addressing Chimney (which, from what little we get of him, it seems he does care— it’s just… not in an ideal way); and Eddie melancholically watching Chris grow (with or without seasons 7-8 reasons).
The second part of the song sums up, in a way, the years either peacefully spent and nostalgically remembered; discontentedly wasted and bitterly regretted; or a bit of both:
“Sleep in our eyes, we sit down at the breakfast table,
Barely awake, I let precious time go by…
Then, when she’s gone,
There’s an odd melancholy feeling
And a sense of guilt I can’t deny.”
This brought to mind a TK and Gwyn fanfic called “a case of cruel to be kind” and it is as bittersweet as it is cute and badass for mother and son to have time-jumping abilities. The endings of the fanfic and the video game also have similar endings. On their own, and both, will make you cry, guaranteed.
Very TK-and-Gwyn-(and-Jonah kinda) coded (especially post-3x08 and 3x09). No, I will not give context because I’m not gonna reopen old wounds any further than this— again, if you know, you know. It’s a good country-adjacent song though!
This bit got me flashing back, regarding TK:
“When you’re lost and crying loud,
Just know I’ll always track you down.
I’m here for you, I’ll always bring you home.
And when the winter cold sets in, then I’ll keep you from the elements,
‘Cause I am you, and you’re what makes me whole,
Mama’s little rose…”
And this bit suddenly took a hard turn towards the Ryders, particularly with Grace and Charlie:
“Oh, well, hello dear,
I promise you that Mama’s gonna be there soon,
But she’s got a lot of things to do,
And time flies when I’m away from you.
So let me get it clear:
I see your rolling tears every time I leave,
But until this world finds peace,
I’ve got something people need.”

And on the subject of the America’s Cup, Caterina Banti also lashes out at Bertelli, the owner of Luna Rossa, who recently said he did not want mixed teams in match racing for the trophy. Banti told Repubblica, “He is a man from another time, when women on board put fear, brought bad luck, disturbance and misfortune. But these are just stereotypes. Is the man more direct and practical? He often is. The woman may be less concrete, but she has great mental strength and stamina. If you do not give us the opportunity to try, how can you say we are unfit. Test our merits and then discard us. But afterwards, not before. How can we become good if we are not given a chance?” According to Banti, the media are also enslaved to these old stereotypes. “At the Tokyo Games,” she explains, “they used to ask me, ‘How come you and Ruggero are not engaged?’ Here, the sexual relationship, only that seemed to be of interest. Not the winning partnership despite the differences in characters, not the interchangeable roles, not the life paths, not the personalities.”
