Thoughts on Jane Prentiss

I have SO MANY thoughts on Jane Prentiss but for the sake of this post, I’ll just share a few.

Jane is the main villain of the first season and I find that to be a sincerely fascinating choice of JS’s part considering she truly isn’t evil. She’s just a woman who a terrible thing happened to. At the end of the day, she just wanted help that the institute wouldn’t couldn’t provide.

On a meta level though, Jane could be either an exploration of the way in which the mentally ill and homeless are treated under capitalism or the way in which it corrupts us — forces us to think like it in a way that causes us to be self sacrificing vessels for it’s desires.

I think Jane is also just an exploration of debilitating mental illness and loneliness (and maybe even the ways in which that leaves you more susceptible to systemic harm). In mag 32 we get the sense she really does want the institute’s help even though the corruption has already began contorting her desires to suit it’s needs.

And the thing is — this kind of more visceral exploration of loneliness is very character of the corruption! We see it in mag 102 with Benoit Macon (the one who marries a giant beetle and has its bug babies).

I genuinely don’t think the corruption and the lonely are that far off one another (and we do know that the entities aren’t actually entirely separate from one another). The corruption manifests via unhealthy relationships (which it manifests very physically with Benoit and Jane), which lonely people are more susceptible to out of sheer desperation for any kind of love and adoration.

Jane is so tragically lonely and self sacrificing and if only she had an anchor.

The Southern accent authority has spoken!

Imagine a guy who spent forty years in Savannah or Macon or Gainesville or Mobile but then moved to New England for a decade not having a perfect Southern accent anymore (whatever that means)…

I was born in Canada and moved to the US when I was 10. I got made fun of for my Canadian accent. Now I speak a mutant Canadian-Minnesotan accent and get made fun of for it everywhere I go. No Minnesotan would own my accent. No Canadian would own my accent. Does that mean I suck at accents? I guess so but I still have one.

The guy is British and he does a more competent Southern accent (again, whatever that means) than many actors. Keep in mind that it is intentionally overdone for panache. I’ve only seen Knives Out but they never say where exactly Benoit Blanc is from. Ransom mocks him by alluding to him sounding like Colonel Sanders or Foghorn Leghorn but that’s it. I was immediately reminded of Kevin Spacey’s character in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, who also has a very strong accent.

If you’re from Amarillo you have a “Southern accent” but it sounds completely different than a New Orleans accent which is completely different from a Nashville accent which is completely different from a Savannah accent. All are “Southern accents.”

Damn people on the internet are exhausting sometimes. Just let people like the quirky private detective and his overcooked Southern accent.
