No because this scene is actually so impactful in terms of their dynamic. It’s so perfect. It’s everything to me.

I think I personally tend to focus a lot on how Benjamin felt when Charlie went to Bloor’s because he initially reacts dejectedly and just. Sadly. And feels somewhat betrayed as he hears the news. Obviously like any normal kid he’s not happy about losing his best friend in any sense.

But here we have a scene that’s (supposedly) about Charlie’s perspective, showing how he feels nostalgic in a way for that one normal weekend, how he doesn’t want things to change. He also doesn’t want to lose his best friend.

And while that feeling should be a-given, the fact that it’s demonstrated is SO important to me. I’ve seen people say that Charlie really only pities Benjamin (and I believe that’s only based on a singular line at the beginning of the book) so it’s very nice to see a scene that’s pretty much outwardly saying “This is Charlie and his best friend’s possibly last normal weekend together, Charlie doesn’t like that things are changing so drastically, and he’s worried for his friends wellbeing.”

AND THE LAST SCENE. God the last scene. I don’t have words to describe it but like. Yeah they love each other, romantic or not they have one of the most meaningful bonds ever I love them.

Benlie special because uhmm parallel w/ Amy and Lyell. Magic kid falls in love with non-magic person (as far as they are aware. Amy was technically related to a wizard.) Griselda Bone hates both Amy and Benjamin an unnecessary amount. You guys get what I mean.

Ranted about this in the server already but like. This line made me think of so many things, particularly that Charlie is technically telling the truth from his perspective here.

Obviously he has not literally known Benjamin for forever, they had 5 years of their lives separate before they met. But also, Charlie doesn’t really remember anything past being 5 years old, does he? Like he doesn’t even remember his dad because the dude went missing so early in his life, he doesn’t remember there being photos of his father, even. He BARELY remembered that the pictures were taken down by Grandma Bone.

So to Charlie that’s…probably true. In his mind he has known him for forever. He’s never not known Benjamin. They’ve been best friends for what they perceive as their entire lives so far.

And just the way that Charlie presents this is both so peculiar and so funny?? Like. Dude you could just say “I’ve known him since we were five.” But NO he says “forever.”

Imagine introducing your best friend to someone and saying “yeah this is ___ we’ve known each other our entire lives and in all our past lives, in fact we are intrinsically intertwined by our souls and cannot be separated for too long lest we begin to fade away.”
