Good Horacio genuinely believed that this was the love of his life, that no other woman would ever be able to please him now or replace the impassioned and witty Tristana in his heart; and he consoled himself with the thought that time would temper her fever-pitch thinking, because such an outflow of bold ideas was excessive in a wife or an eternal beloved. Dear friend Leonardo, Your letter arrived, with the final approval for Tristana. I have been working on it continuously now for three weeks and, as expected, I have found all paths blocked by the thorny emotions and tastes of a stale era only the ‘wordsmithery’ of a genius like Galdós could make palatable. Working with Julio Alejandro has helped, because thanks to his implacable presence I have to ‘think’, come what may, for seven hours a day. Incidentally, you can pay the 50,000 pesetas you agreed to give Alicia whenever you find it convenient. Julio will give me receipts for his 100,000-peseta salary, that is, for 20,000 pesos.
Please let me know if it would be very disruptive to you if I were two weeks late with the treatment for the dialogues. That is, if I were to send it to you on 15 April, rather than 31 March, which means we would start in the studio between 20 and 30 May. Preparation will be easy. I did warn you that I tend to let arranged deadlines slip past only at the treatment phase. Finding inspiration is elusive, there’s a lot of mulling over and then when it finally comes, it sometimes says the silliest things.
And now for something very important. Have you heard about the ENORMOUS scandal over Viridiana in Italy? Approved by the censor, it premiered in Rome on 18 January. Great critical and box office success. The Attorney General, dottore Spagnuolo, sees it in Milan and immediately bans it as ‘an attack on State religion’, availing himself, they say, of new legislation on censorship. From that moment, entire pages in papers and illustrated magazines devoted to the issue: Milan critics organize a public protest; directors and writers protest on their part, De Seta, Dino Risi, Lattuada, Monicelli, Moravia, etc. The socialist newspaper Avanti! gives it a centre-page spread, publishing all the dialogues from the film and taking advantage of the occasion to lash out at the Spanish government in my name. Il Corriere della Sera, on the other hand (and I’m grateful) quotes me saying that I don’t try to ‘play politics’ in my films and that I don’t use film as a pulpit to preach or spread propaganda about anything or anyone. An important Italian producer wrote to me saying: ‘The Viridiana affair is on everyone’s lips. All the intellectuals and the entire left protesting for all they’re worth and, as a result, you’ve become the most up-to-date symbol of the endless battle between progressives and reactionaries.’ And then he says he wants to sign me up as soon as I finish working with you.
I’m only telling you all this to let you know, in case it affects our project. It may be worth checking the waters at the Dirección General de Cine? I’ll wait to hear from you.

25.Favorite Middle Grade book(s). If I say Anne of Green Gables is it too obvious? I think a lot about A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett but I need to re-read it before calling it a favourite. I have a much more normie answer and is that I love Harry Potter, despite its faults the series just works so well, and the writing is both good and accesible for everyone.
26.Favorite novella(s). My absolute favourite must be Marianela by Benito Perez Galdos. I wasn't sure that it was a novella but it is! I recommend it because the author is one of the most important classic spanish authors and no one should miss out. It questions societal norms, social inequality and perceptions of beauty.
41.When you get ready for a week long trip to somewhere how many books do you download/pack inside the suitcase? I don't read much on trips because either I'm doing something else or resting, I can't read when I'm too tired! Still, I have ebooks to read in my phone if I get the urge, and I normally buy a book wherever I go as if they were souvenirs.

Dear friend Leonardo, ‘What’s done is done’. And in this case, what’s done is Tristana. There are many obstacles still to overcome, but it’s worth it. I’m taking the liberty of indicating some things to consider as follows.
Adaptation As with all my adaptations, I can never say whether the result will remain close to the book or lead me down unsuspected avenues.
I think it’s out of the question to move the action, characters and events to the present day. Everything would be out of date because in the eighty years since Galdós wrote the book, our customs, even our way of expressing emotions, have completely changed. The action would need to be set in Segovia, for example, or in Toledo. Time has barely passed there. And it would be easy to conjure up the atmosphere, and the Garridos and Tristanas of the 1920s, in a way that only a ‘super-production’ could manage in Madrid at the moment.
It would be better, if you don’t mind me trespassing on your territory here, just to take out an option on the book. There would always be time to go back later and pay the full amount when we’ve seen the adaptation.
As time is short, I’m going to take on someone to do the adaptation with me. It’s Julio Alejandro, with whom I worked on the first version of Viridiana. Would you agree to me offering him 100,000 pesetas, with me contributing half?
Actors Fernando Rey is perfect for the role of Don Lope Garrido. I’ve taken the risk of suggesting Durcal, and it was a risk, because I’ve only seen a photo of her, but she is about the same age as Tristana and she’s pretty. You’ll know better than I whether she can carry it off, as an actress, and what she’s like to direct, how natural her voice is, etc., etc. Of course, as soon as I get to Madrid I’ll watch a couple of her films. If she isn’t right for the part, you could start thinking of a substitute, and a foreigner, if possible, so we can make it a co-production. It’s really important that Tristana (and I mean the character) is exceptional. The censors would be more lenient with a co-production don’t you think? The other characters would be easy enough to find over there.
By about the end of February I’ll be able to give you an idea of the general direction of the film. It would be wonderful if one of you could come over here to exchange ideas. Of course, I won’t be going to Spain until the end of March, by which time it will be finished, unless there are any unexpected obstacles.
