Humayun Ahmed: An Aesthatic Metaphor

The famous Bengali author Humayun Ahmed took birth in the year of 1948 and left all of us behind in 2012. In this life span, he contributed a very special part to Bangla and especially, Bangladeshi literature. He is often called the blessed prince of Bangla literature and that is not all, still in every book fair his books act like magnets. 

  This memorable author portrayed our usual life in such a way that we immediately feel connected while reading a ‘Humayun Ahmed novel’ as he has mostly been a novelist for us. Tagorian vibe in his writings created a newer form of attraction for Tagore’s poems and songs. He managed to synchronize every situation with a Tagore song and felt that only Tagore could blend life perfectly with words, so somehow his love for Tagore came out beautifully to his readers too. Not only Tagore but also many known and unknown authors were introduced through Humayun Ahmed's references. He did give us the information and also inspired us with some attractive gesture that we got bound to go through those references for at least once in our life. 

  Spreading knowledge is not confined in some boring articles, Humayun Ahmed proved it to us in his unique way. The metaphors he used are not from another world, they derive from our known and beloved environment. The things we are able to afford, things that we are used to having come in a special uniform and we start to love them once again, from someone else’s perspective. It reminds us that sometimes, we only have to change the glasses, maybe that’s when things would come to us in its clearer and poetical form. That surely doesn’t often deliver a rosy picture, but sadness is the most felt thing here. Tears that roll down our cheeks remind us that waiting may never end but still, we do not have to lose hope. Humayun Ahmed’s writings broke us, gave us heartache many times; but in the meantime, maybe we smiled for a moment, we took a breath and wanted to think that life is a surprise party. 

  Love gets a shape in his books that ever has not been explored before. He showed us, love is not always a target to fulfill, love can be incomplete and yet so beautiful that it completes our existence. Love makes us stronger and yet we are so weak for our beloved, he knew how to nurture that weakness through the characters. It could be anyone - Muna, Rupa, Rumali as the Humayun’s heroines, but no one of these waited for any prince charming to come. They loved the imperfect soul so perfectly that love bowed before them. Humayun Ahmed’s writings did never create a fairy tale that happens with a happy ending. Because this is what life really is, life never really ends or steps on the same river. We keep moving on with the pain buried in our heart and a far tune of bamboo leave flute takes our heart away, far enough from the madding crowd. That one ‘Liluya Batash’ knows where our thirsty eyes want to go, it definitely knows how we crave for that one ‘Badol Diner Prothom Kodom Phool’ from our beloved one when we read Humayun Ahmed romantic books. 

‘Middle-class sentiment’- this term is what we generally use to indicate an emotional, illogical vibe of the typical Bengali people. He channelized this sentiment to go through readers’ hearts. Starting from unusual and special recipes to enjoy nature, he never failed to impress us with his magical writing. Still now people express their love for a rainy afternoon or moonlit romance with some Humayun Ahmed reference. He created a contrast between logic and anti-logic with two of his most special characters, Misir Ali and Himalaya aka Himu. They are unique and Humayun Ahmed could express the duality in his own personality through them. All of us are a combination of Logic and anti-logic in our lives. Sometimes we need Misir Ali for solving real problems and facing challenges and most often we want to act like Himu. We want to be careless like him so that we never get caught in the life-traps. But in actual sense, we cannot do that. Where Misir Ali becomes our necessity, we still desire the luxury of being Himu. We fantasize about walking through the night streets with bare feet even if it is not February 21st. 

  Humayun Ahmed and all of his characters still live in our minds and help us find a ray of good hope when we are devastated. We have built up a close relationship with them and they can never be forgotten because they are the shelter that we crave when a heartache falls upon us when we feel the urge to be with someone and we have literally no shoulder to cry on. They are the companions with whom we share our sorrows and happiness. Don’t you need a Misir Ali sitting before you at a clumsy morning and telling you how to solve the puzzle of your hard times? Don’t you want a Himu as your companion when it’s time to break the rule? Isn’t a Shuvro what you call ‘a friend in need’? Trust your instincts. You surely do want all of these and that’s what going to make him an ‘Immortal author’.
