What are the benefits and applications of door frame metal detectors for security screening?
Door frame metal detectors offer significant benefits and find diverse applications in the realm of security screening. These detectors are designed to be stationed at entrances, creating a first line of defense against concealed metal objects. One primary benefit is their efficiency in quickly scanning individuals entering a facility without causing major disruptions to the flow of people. Their non-intrusive nature allows for a seamless screening process, making them suitable for high-traffic areas like airports, government buildings, and event venues.

Down a Sitter
Tumblr media
Just a thing based off @teamsladsandgents ask earlier tonight
Sonny has to go to court with his newborn daughter in a carrier. Pretty short and fluffy.
Dominick Carisi Jr. was nothing if not a hands on father. Ever since Emilia was born, he never hesitated to step up. His wife was able to work from home, and he’d take over as soon as he walked in the door. Today, however, she was on a girl’s trip through Sunday, and Thursday’s arraignment court appearances started with a panicked phone call from the sitter. Allison had broken her arm tripping over her dog and was on her way to the hospital. With his family at work, he was delighted and appalled to realize his daughter would be accompanying him to court. He had four cases on the docket, and while he wasn’t sure he wanted her exposed to the kind of crimes he prosecuted, reminding himself in the mirror she was three months old made him remember she wouldn’t understand. It also wasn’t the actual trial where there would be witnesses and photographs and accusations. Once he did, he was excited for everyone to see her, even if he was suddenly aware that maybe Amanda or Liv could have watched her long enough for him to hurry into the court room.
Carefully, he dressed them both. He knew it was a little sentimental, but he made sure his tie went with the flowers on the leggings he pulled over her onesie. Would anyone else notice? No. Would he know? Yes. Besides,  Olivia would be there, and he was certain he couldn’t resist showing her off, probably freeing her from the carrier afterwards to be passed around the squad room or the office. When he stopped at Hogan Place, one of the newer assistants was the first to stop him.
“I thought you had arraignment?” she asked, brow raised as she looked at the top of Emilia’s sleeping head.
“I do. The sitter broke her arm and Mrs. Carisi’s on a girls’ trip.” He contorted a little more than he normally would, tugging at the carrier and resting his hand on the back of Emilia’s head with a dimpled grin. “She’s the cutest thing in the world though, ain’t she? Arraignment should only be the morning and then I’ll be working in the office.”
“She is pretty cute,” she chuckled. “I’ll cover you if you need a long lunch.”
“I appreciate it. You can meet her better when we’re back. I gotta hurry or I’d show her off better now.”
He dropped the diaper bag in his office, opening his briefcase to consolidate it. He managed to fit a few diapers and the wipes, scooting a file over to add a bottle. Once it was shut again, he placed a hand on her head as they walked. With each person who noticed him walking through offices and by his usual coffee stands- how could they not? The carrier was pink- he gave a little wave, tilting his lanky torso to show her face. She was sound asleep, and he guessed she’d wake up during the walk and fall back asleep within an hour. That should give him time. As if on cue, she woke in the sun and babbled softly up at him.
“Oh yeah, Emmie?” he asked, putting his briefcase into the xray and stepping through the metal detector. “That’s pretty cool.”
“Taking your baby to work today, counsellor?” the security guard asked, chuckling at the sight. He figured it was probably funny, a pink carrier and little legs in floral leggings and little pink shoes on her feet. There was also the way the carrier seemed wider than Sonny’s slim frame or the little hands balled into fists that found there way to his chest.
“Yeah. Sitter cancelled. Means a daddy daughter day, work or no work.”
He continued as he normally would, only he stopped to talk to everyone he could while Emilia was awake. When they couldn’t talk, he’d lift her little arm in a wave to the people he saw during each trip. Sonny Carisi was also nothing if not friendly. He spotted Olivia, letting out a laugh at the look he got. The squad had all come to the hospital, but this was her first time seeing Emilia since she’d gone home. The little girl held his index fingers tightly as he stepped beside the lieutenant.
“Say hi to Lieu,” he grinned, moving so that Olivia could see her and she could see Olivia. Emilia looked at her with wide eyes, babbling softly.
“Hi Emmie,” she cooed, hand going to the little girl’s back. “As great as it is to see her, why is she here?”
“Y’know our sitter? She broke her arm. With my misses still on her trip, I figured Emmie could sleep through court. You wanna go to lunch after? You can hold her. I’m sure she’d love cuddles. The baby smell is the best. My new favorite way to go through court.”
“That sounds great, Carisi.”
He was, of course, correct, and Emilia was asleep again just before time for him to stand up in court and arraign the four cases he had. They’d been placed in a row on the docket, and he had chosen not to acknowledge the fact there was a sleeping girl so content against his chest. His face maintained his usual courtroom composure, and the hand on Emilia’s back as he leaned to transfer the stack of files from his briefcase to the lectern before him.
“And who is your co counsel?” the judge asked, and Sonny could hear the amusement in her voice.
“Emilia Carisi,” he said plainly, rolling his neck to pop it as he reviewed the file in front of him.
“Is she going to be an attorney then?”
“If she decides to. But, I believe we’re here about the charges against Mr. Thomas.”
As they went through each case, he ignored comments from the defense. If his hand hadn’t been resting delicately on the back of Emilia’s head, the carrier and baby could be removed easily, and he would look like he did any other day. His thumb brushed back and forth over the wisps of hair, as he explained the charges and asked for bail. Only Benson could see the barely there tensing of his jaw when the defense treated Emilia as proof he wasn’t taking the proceedings seriously.
“Childcare fell through, and I felt it was more important your client be arraigned in a timely matter instead of pushing the matter off another day. We can do that, if you feel it would be more to his benefit than being able to make bail in an hour.”
That stopped the commentary, and he was able to finish all four cases, hand only leaving the top of her head to let her hold his fingers when she woke. As soon as he left the courtroom, he smiled again, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.  “Let’s go find Lieu so that we can go to lunch,” he whispered to her. “Thank you for not crying.” Emilia babbled back to him happily as he spotted Olivia and they made their way out. Before they’d started down the steps, he’d unstrapped the carrier, beaming at Olivia.
“You gotta hold her Lieu. I helped make her.”

The True Ending
~Part 3~
A benefit of marrying Tony Stark is the absolute freedom to go wherever whenever. Nothing is in the way.
Travelling overseas wasn’t something Peter particularly wanted to do ever again, considering the last time he did.. he almost didn’t come back but this time was different because Tony was with him and Tony wouldn’t let anything happen to him.
The newly weds had been cuddles up in the back seat of their limo, Tony said he was going to give Peter the full experience. They had planned to drink and party the whole way to the airport but Tony’s lap was just too enticing, Peter just had to sit down and cuddles into the older man’s warmer chest. The soft warmth between the married couple had slowly lulled them to sleep, it wasn’t until Happy opened the door the Tony finally woke up. With a tired groan the man sat up, still cradelling his precious boy in his lap who was refusing to move or let go.
“We are here. The airport security is here to take you through to the check through and then to the plane. I saw you guys sleeping so I asked them to bring a cart.” Happy spoke, funnily enough he had spoken on a happy tone. Tony responded with a thankful smile, it wasn’t an uncommon fact that Peter hasn’t been sleeping well ever since the disaster with Beck but Tony had been working to help Peter and part of that is letting the boy sleep for as long as possible. After managing to get out of the car, Tony carried Peter over the the buggy cart and set the boy down before buddling him in a rug in his lap. The airport staff helped Happy load the luggage onto the cart before the two lover birds were driven into the bustling New York Airport. Peter only began to stir when they were a few metre to the check in, the smaller boy whined out and tugged the blanket over his head before burying his undoubtably cute face into Tony’s chest. The older man just softly rubbed circles over the spider’s back until the staff forced the two of them onto their feet and to moved through the metal detectors before checking in for their flight. Tony looked down at his chest.
“Well you see, here’s a problem.” The mechanic tapped his reactor. “This thing is metal and I’ll die if I take it off so get that magical wand detector ready.” Meanwhile half asleep Peter had managed to get one arm of his jacket off but was struggling to get the other off his wrist. The boy just kept loosely fumbling at the sleeve as he stared at the ground, obviously not awake enough the function. Tony decided to go rescue his spider, walking up behind the poor boy and pulling him close. Peter melted into his arms immediately, closing his eyes and nuzzling his face into Tony’s shoulder with a quiet whine of complaint.
“I know Baby, I know. Once we are on the plane you can sleep as much as you want but right now we have to get there first so let’s get this jacket off and he’d through the big door frame.” As he spoke, Tony gently took the boy’s wrist and slid the jacket right off. Putting it in one of the little trays as Peter pointed to the metal detector with his doe eyes staring up at Tony. The older male nodded and softly nudged the boy through, of course Peter was given a green light because it was Peter. Tony wasn’t so lucky, as predicted the detector went off but what he didn’t predict was his husband’s reaction the the airport security taking him off to the side to search him properly. Peter started to sob and move towards Tony, words like “Give me back my Husband” fell from the boy’s lips as well as many calls of his name. Peter’s sleepy mind must have been too tired to recognise what exactly was going on. To stop Peter from interfering with the search, staff had to come and restrain the poor boy who had started to shake.
“Ok. Enough is enough. I don’t have a bloody bomb on me and we all know I’m Ironman so im going to have metal on me.” Tony pushes passed the people searching him and moved onto his sobbing and shaking husband that was frantically trying to reaching for him. The millionaire flared that the two men holding Peter until they let go, Tony then moved in and scooped the boy up in a tight hug. Swaying back and forth as he whispered sweet nothings in his ear. This wasn’t the first time something like this had happened to Peter, it was always after a deep sleep and it always started by Tony disappearing or leaving him alone. It triggered something in Peter that left him in a weeping mess.
“Idiots.” Tony left the checkin and headed straight for the tarmac, stuff the stupid security team. He was Tony Stark for God’s sake! Everyone knew that he always has some kind of metal on him. Peter had buried his face into Tony’s shoulder, his eyes red and his stomach churning from his small crying fit. The older man quietly carried the boy across the tarmac, up the stairs and into the rear of the private jet.
“We are ready for take off.” Tony heard from the pilots, he had chosen to not fly completely exclusive as them he wouldn’t have to worry about taking over if something happened because all he had to worry about now was his ball of warm in his arms. Moving into one of the seats and placing Peter beside himself, who had whined out in complaints of no longer being able to cuddle. Soon they were flying smoothly through the hair headed to their next destination. Peter had wiggled his way out of his seat and back into Tony’s lap, cuddling up to his husband as the elder gave in and curled into his precious boy. Reaching down he collected a blanket that he laid over them before pushing back so the chair extended into a small bed of sorts. They stayed like this for hours just enjoying the soft touches, the soft kisses, Peter’s cute little mewls whenever he nuzzled closer and of course the sound of each other’s heart beat. That was all they really needed.

The Substance of Love - Chapter 9: Klaus x Fem! Reader
Links to Chapters 1-8 are on my Masterlist
Word count: ~1380
Warnings: Violence
__________________________________________
“How do you feel about laundry?,” Hope asked, pointing to small room adjacent to the kitchen. With no phone, no TV, not even a book or a window you’d be trapped alone with your thoughts. Hope pulled in a chair from the kitchen and patted you on the shoulder. She was doing you a favor, a light chore for the expectant mother. You smiled for her benefit.
“Sure. I’ll get it all done, no problem.”
“Klaus, I need you out in the field to pick the last of the tomatoes and kale if you’re up to it.”
“Let me at ‘em,” he said making a cute grabby gesture with his fingers. You snorted. It was a glimpse of the old Klaus making an appearance, a sign that he was coping.
“It’s the end of the growing season, so we need to harvest, can, and freeze as much as possible. Ravi and Sarah will show you what to do.”
Klaus took his cue and left through the screen door with a snap and a flurry of clucks and feathers from the roaming chickens. The thought of Klaus doing farm work gave you a special satisfaction. It was both sexy and ridiculous.
Hope turned to go. “If you need something, I’ll be buzzing around. And if any of these old things break down…” She smacked the top of the dryer for emphasis. “Go find Kyle, he knows machines, he can fix it.”
You settled into the task, separating the clothes and loading the washers. When that was done you sat down and tried to meditate like they showed you in rehab, but it was no use.
Klaus came running to you out of breath with Ravi and Sarah in tow. “Hey, I just saw a car pull up. It was them. Hazel and Cha Cha…commission agents…the bad guys.”
Alex came up from the cellar muttering, “How the fuck did they find us?”
“Shit, what do we do?” You turned to Klaus.
“Hide, get low.” Both of you hid behind the kitchen island.
The agents broke in the front door and proceeded to argue among themselves. They were not even wearing masks. Hope lunged forward, pointing a shotgun at the intruders. They put two bullets in her chest and shoved right past her with barely a pause in their conversation.
Ravi smashed a bunch of empty mason jars sitting on a shelf.
“What the hell are you doing? They’ll hear us.” Klaus hissed.
Sure enough, the agents stopped their bickering and headed for the kitchen.
“Which part of small object telekinesis didn’t you understand?,” Ravi sighed. He made the hundreds of glass shards rise into the air. “Oh shit,” Klaus whispered, then fist bumped to his resourcefulness.
“Come on out, little mama…we’re not going to hurt you,” Cha Cha taunted you with her gun drawn.
Ravi sent the jagged shards of varying shapes and sizes flying through the air, stabbing and slicing the agents and imbedding themselves into nearly every inch of exposed skin. The agents staggered back and screamed. Cha Cha, who seemed to get the worst of it, dropped her gun after firing it off in a random direction. It landed on the floor. Klaus scrambled over and recovered it while Hazel and Cha Cha struggled to pick the the glass out of each other’s faces and necks. Their white shirt collars had been stained red with blood.
“Where the fuck is our backup?,” Hazel shouted up at the ceiling.
Klaus checked the clip to see how many bullets were left in the gun, took the safety off, and pointed the muzzle to the ground. Seeing how adept he was with a weapon was startling. He looked scared but his actions looked instinctual.
Half a dozen more agents in SWAT gear came charging in, guns blazing, like something out of a movie. You flattened yourself harder against the stainless steel frame of the kitchen island while Klaus returned fire. “Holy shit, fellas, we’re supposed to take the pregnant one alive. Dial it back a notch,” Hazel snapped.
You noticed that one of the SWAT agents was standing close enough to touch. If you were to catch him off guard, maybe you could break his shin the way you had broken Kendra’s arm. They couldn’t kill you. What was the worst that could happen?, you reasoned. Reaching out on your hands and knees, you snatched his pant leg. He reacted, kicking you right under the chin, making you see stars. Then he reached down and grabbed a handful of your hair, but that’s when you took hold of his wrist, breaking it instantly. The pain brought him down to his knees until you were face to face. “I can’t kill you, but I’m going to make you bleed for that!,” he snarled. Without thinking, you reached up with both hands and cupped his ears, then watched in horror as his eyes rolled back in his head and his body went limp. You must have given him an aneurism. You looked up at the rest of the chaotic scene, paralyzed by the shock of what you had just done.
Kyle ran in toward the sound of the commotion. He fired a bolt of lightning at Hazel. The electric charge made him convulse and fling his gun across the room. No one noticed the spark that hit the curtains until the kitchen started filling with smoke. Everyone got down on the floor. Sarah crawled up to Klaus asking how to help.
“Jump us outta here,” he said, frantically.
“Yeah, I can jump high, but I can’t phase through walls or smash through bricks like Super Mario. It doesn’t work like that!”
“Well if we don’t leave now we’re going to die.” Klaus has been triggered by the violence, but was doing his best to stay strong for you and the baby.
An angry and bloodied Cha Cha suddenly emerged through the cloud of smoke. “Come here, you little shit!,” she growled, latching onto your ankle. Before you could react, Sarah kicked her hard, right in the face.
“I guess these legs are good for more than jumping,” she grinned.
Klaus disappeared for a moment and returned with the injured Hazel who he was holding at gunpoint. “Now, let’s get out of here, he coughed…"Do we have everyone? Don’t leave anyone behind. Where’s Hope?” Alex shook their head mournfully.
The rest of you came stumbling out of the burning farmhouse coughing and gasping for air. You did a quick headcount. “Hey, Y/N, could you help me out with this?” Kyle had been shot. There was a bullet in his shoulder.
“I’d love to, but unless you want that bullet to set off every metal detector for the rest of your life, I’m going to need Ravi’s assistance on this one.”
“Okay, make it quick please.” Kyle winced as Ravi removed the bullet telekinetically and you healed the wound with your touch.
Klaus still had the gun pointed at Hazel. “Give me your keys.” Hazel fished them out of his pocket and dropped them into Klaus’ open palm.
“I don’t care about this mission anymore. You know my partner tried to kill me? I just want to run away with my girlfriend and open a doughnut shop.” he said.
“Moving speech, but can you shut up for a second?” Klaus said to Hazel, then addressed his comrades. “I’m not sure where we go from here, but are you guys going to be alright?”
Alex spoke up through tears, “We’ve got a van in the barn. Guess it’s time to hit the road.”
“It’s a shame, we were starting to make a great team,” …And I’m so sorry about Hope,“ you said with a hug.  You and Klaus hugged them all and wished them luck, then turned your focus on how to end this madness and get home.
Klaus forced Hazel into the trunk of the blue Volvo. “Cozy?,” he asked rhetorically before closing the lid and handing you the keys. You both hopped in. “Christ on a cracker,” Klaus gasped, looking into the rear view mirror.
You scanned the empty backseat. “It’s Cha Cha’s ghost isn’t it?”
“Bingo.”
“And is that what I think it is?,” you said pointing to a large black suitcase.
“Yup.”

Stacked Against
“It’s right around this corner, Dean.” Sam was reading the map in the passenger seat of the Impala as Dean ran a stop sign to round the bend.
Only to come upon five cop cars nearly blocking the street.
“Crap,” Dean said, slowing to a crawl. “You think someone tip the cops?”
“About what?” Sam peered out of the windshield as Dean pulled to the side of the road a good distance from the flashing lights. “The smell?”
Dean rolled his eyes. “So do we want to come back later?”
“No, they’re all at that house.” Sam pointed to the porch of a run-down, tan house with the front door open and a few officers on the porch. “Looking at the numbers, we need to be on that side.” He gestured to the opposite side. “That blue one, there.”
“Alright. Let’s go."
On foot, they circled around the back of a neighboring house and cut through the woods behind the next few yards to the blue house. Dean went to work on the door lock while Sam tried his knife in the window catch. Sam won, and so they crawled through the old, rickety opening into a well lit kitchen. A pot was on the stove smoking and boiling over. Sam rushed to turn off the heat but the smoke detector started going off.
“Fan it!” Sam called.
Dean grabbed a towel and waved it frantically at the smoke detector on the ceiling as it yelled at him, “Fire. Fire.”
“Yeah, I know,” Dean said.
Sam opened the back door to let some air in, but then hit Dean in the arm to get his attention and pointed at the metal pipe running from the fire alarm into the wall. “It’s hardwired. The fire department has already been notified.”
“Of course they have,” Dean said throwing the towel on the table. “Better hurry up then. It knows we’re here now anyway.”
Dean closed his eyes for a moment and took a deep breath as he reach for his gun tucked into the back of his pants and stalked out. Sam followed suit.
That was one way to get rid of the evidence, Dean figured, burn the house down after killing the inhabitant. Compared to the kitchen, the rest of the house was dark.  A long hallway leading towards the front of the house. Various doorways leading off of it. They checked each room, the sound of the smoke detector ringing in their ears.
With the bottom floor clear, they moved upstairs and started checking those rooms.
One door seemed promising in that it wouldn’t open. It wasn’t locked; the handle turned easily and the door even swung every so slightly. Together, Sam and Dean muscled the door open to find a large bookcase on its side holding the door shut.  The room was a study with a large wooden desk centered near a window in the far wall. A sleek, modern lamp was smashed on the ground and when Sam walked around the desk he found the owner of the house.
Ainsley Handler, a man they had saved from a werewolf the year before, had called earlier in the night to warn them.  Sam checked the pulse and shook his head for Dean’s benefit.
“He knew it was in here with him,” Sam said, standing and surveying the room.
“Yeah, but what was it?” Dean asked. He moved to the desk and picked up a framed photo. It showed Ainsley and another man proudly holding up keys in front of this very house. He turned it around to Sam. “You think friend?”
“Husband. Luckily away on business, but I doubt he’ll be staying in this house after he learned what happened.”
A few things happened at once.
There was a pounding at the door downstairs and Sam flew across the room when a powerful paw swatted at him from the shadows.
“Sam!”
Dean fired his gun into the shadow as the creature moved into the light. A large, brown and furry, puma-sized monster advanced on Sam, seemingly unaware of the bullets entering its body. Dean immediately placed himself between Sam and the creature, swapping his empty gun for a large knife from his belt.
“Sam?” Dean called not really looking behind him, “you ok?”
“Yeah.”
He heard Sam grunting and getting to his feet as the four legged creature moved towards him. The movement was slow and smooth. The eyes of the creature focused on Dean sizing him up.
Suddenly it lunged and even as Dean swung the knife at it, he knew that the thing was too fast. It had Dean in an awkward headlock and the knife clattered to the floor.  Tighter and tighter the grip got around Dean’s neck as the creature screamed a high-pitched wail. Dean refused to go out like this, not again.
Yet, there were stars here with them, Dean could see them floating before him. He tried to reach out and touch them. They were the most beautiful thing he had ever seen and he didn’t want this moment to end. He could vaguely hear someone calling his name, and a high whine and a pounding, but none of that mattered as he weakly reached for the stars.
The wailing stopped and the arm around his neck loosened, but Dean couldn’t immediately figure out what that meant. Then a new arm, picking him up and dragging him to the window.
“Come on, Dean. Come on,” a voice said. “The firefighters have broken the door down.”
Sammy, it was Sammy. He shook his head to clear it as the blood returned to his brain, and looked around. The furry monster was motionless on the floor, its blood forming a pool around it.
“What happened?” Dean asked, struggling to get his feet to cooperate.
“Silver knife to the heart,” Sam said pulling Dean towards a window. “The noise it was making reminded me of something I had read. Stricta Tenaci. Likes to choke its victims to death and vulnerable to silver. Can we talk about this later?”
Dean finally had his wits back about him and could hear footsteps on the stairs. Ushering Sam out first they both climbed out the window onto a lower roof and shimmied down the drain pipe into the back yard. They ran back into the treeline and stopped to watch the house from there for a moment. Dean could feel Sam looking at him.
“What?” Dean snapped in a whisper.
“Nothing,” Sam said defensively. “Just want to make sure you’re ok.”
“I’m fine, Sammy,” Dean said. “Don’t be so lame. It’s not like I haven’t been suffocated before.”
Sam just scoffed and went back to looking at the house.
Of course he was fine.  Just because being choked out like that reminded him of being buried alive didn’t mean he was going to follow that memory back to the reason he was in that coffin in the first place.
They circled back to the Impala.  As Sam worked in the trunk, dumping his weapons, Dean climbed into the driver’s seat, closed his eyes in the darkness, and took deep breaths.
Let it go, Dean thought, you made it out of another one.
By the time Sam got in the car, Dean was fine.
Believe me.

Small Hearts, Big Heartaches
Requested by @homicidalteenagedream Can you do an Opie & Reader where they are friends with benefits. She ends up leaving Charming, after having a huge fight, but before she could even get out of charming she is in a bad car wreck. The doctors don't know if she will survive, it’s revealed that she’s been hiding that she’s 27 weeks pregnant.
Trigger Warning: Language, premature birth, severe injury from car accident. ANGST!
I ran my hands through my hair, my nerves a mess. “So, you don’t think we’ll be anything more then fuck buddies?”
Opie let out a frustrated growl. “I don’t see why you want to change things, we are fine just being friends with benefits.” He reached over trying to pull me on his lap.
“You know, I’m just a step up from a fucking croweater.” I could feel my emotions just at the edge of losing control. I had to hold on, I couldn’t let him see, how much he was affecting me.
“How can you say that, I treat you right....” He tried to pull me against him.
“The only difference is, I don’t have to sleep with your “brothers” too, and I get the luxury of getting fucked in my bed or yours.” I knew nothing would ever change, that I was nothing more then an another easy lay for him.  I was one that had been passed around among the club.
“What the hell is your problem? Why are you such a moody bitch suddenly? You agreed to this relationship, why do you want to change it now?”
“Because I thought after two years, you’d have some sort of feelings for me...I guess I was wrong.” I wiped the tears away from my eyes. “Bye Opie....it’s been real.”
XXX
I slammed out of his house, going to my packed jeep. Things didn’t go like I’d hoped, I rubbed my stomach gently. It was okay, I could take care of myself, and whoever else came along.  Pulling out of the drive, my plans were to leave  for Texas, I had family down there.
I had several last minute errands to run before I left town. Go to the bank, stop and tell Gemma bye, and get some road trip snacks. I finished at the bank, stopped at the store, filled my cooler with drinks and bought some snacks.
Now for the hard part, saying good-bye to Gemma, and convince her I was only leaving for a few weeks; instead of never coming back. That women was a human lie detector, maybe if I left my sunglasses on, I could hide it .
I slowed down to make my turn into the TM parking lot, for whatever reason, the car behind me didn’t see me stop. I was hit from behind, the back glass shattered.
I was shoved into oncoming traffic where I was hit head on, metal hitting metal echoed off the buildings. The sounds of horns blaring, and tires screeching could be heard, more glass shattering.
I’m not even sure what sounds I heard first or last, they were all blurs. The sounds brought people out of their businesses, to investigate. Including everyone at TM.
Gemma was the first to recognize the mangled jeep that belonged to (Y/N). She was on the phone calling 9-11, she was yelling for someone to call Opie, and to close the garage once they towed the mess off the street.
XXX
Opie rushed into the doors of St. Thomas, to the ER, stopping at the nurses station. “I’m Opie Winston, I was called about (Y/F/N) (Y/L/N)!”
“Are you family Mr. Winston?” The secretary looked at him  waiting for an answer. Opie felt like the whole world was crashing in on him, they’s just had a fight about this not more then a hour ago.
He paused looking at the women. “I’m her fiancee....please tell me...”
“She’s been taken up stairs to the OB ICU.” He rushed up stairs, not really realizing what the women had said. When he burst through the doors, he found the rest of his family there waiting for him.
“What happened?” He went to Gemma, he knew she would have all the answers.
“A drunk driver slammed into the back of her, she was pulling into the lot.” Gemma exhaled. “Did you know she was leaving?”
He ran his hands through his hair, remembering her parting words. “We had a fight this morning...”
The doors opened and two doctors walked through. “(Y/N)(Y/L/N)!”
Opie stood up. “I’m her fiancee.”
“Can you come with us.” The looks on their faces were serious.
“This is her family. Whatever it is, can be discussed in front if them.”
“I’m Dr. Kiem, I’m a Neonatiolgist, and this is Dr. Paul the Obstetrician. Dr. O’Donnell and Dr. Mitchell are the Neurologist and General Surgeon on the team, they’ll be out in a few seconds.”
The two other doctors joined the group, sitting down. Dr. Paul started the conversation. “There’s no easy way to say this, I’ve had Dr. O’Donnell and Dr. Mitchell running tests, and they both concur, that they don’t think (Y/N) is going to survive her injuries.”
Gemma gasped somewhere in the room. Opie stared at the doctor, in shock. “Why are you consulting on the case?”
“Your fiancee is twenty-seven weeks pregnant, we can deliver your daughter by c-section. Dr. Kiem will be taking her case, the second she’s out. There’s no reason your daughter can’t survive this.”
Opie was in utter shock, why didn’t (Y/N) tell him she was pregnant. “How soon do you need to know?”
“The sooner the better.” Dr. O’Donnell replied. “As soon as the baby is out, and (Y/N) has some recovery time; we can better asses her condition. We didn’t want to stress the baby.”
“Just give me a few minutes.” He watched the doctors leave. He got up and started to pace. This was all his fault, he could loose his daughter, and he was probably going to loose (Y/N); because he was a giant ass!
He walked over to the doors the doctor’s had walked through, he couldn’t loose them both.

Kayleigh Rae Winston was born at two pm, she weighed in at almost three pounds and was fifteenth inches long. She was the most precious and beautiful creature Opie had ever seen.
Once she was settled in the NICU, Opie sat his giant frame next the incubator that held his tiny daughter. He gazed at her, with loving eyes. “Hey pretty girl, I just learned about you today. I hope you like your name, I don’t know if you and mommy already had something else picked out.” He wiped his tears away. “I chose the name Kayleigh because it means warrior, and Rae because it means grace. You’re going to have to fight pretty girl, know that mommy and I love you. You’ve got an older sister Ellie and an older brother Kenny, that will look out for you and love you. Not to mention a whole room full of uncles. I need to go check on mommy now, you hold on sweet girl. I love you.” He kissed his hand, and placed it on top of the incubator.
He got up to head down to  recovery. He stared at her battered and bruised body. The doctors weren’t being very promising for her recovery. He say down next to her raking her hand.
“When I lost Donna, I swore to myself I was never going to put myself in that situation again. Then I met you, we became friends, and then we took that up a level. That terrified me because I could feel myself falling for you.” He had to stop and rein himself in.
“I love you, I think I have for a while, I was just too stupid and scared to admit it. (Y/N), you have to fight to come back to us. Our daughter is a little fighter, I named her Kayleigh Rae, she’s so beautiful.”
He had to stop again, he couldn’t take the thought of loosing her. “You have to give some sign, that your still with us. Prove those docs wrong!” He leaned over kissing her forehead.
He raised up, the vital alarms started to sound, nurses and doctors come running in. He was shoved out of the room, and a code blue was called for the room, his six foot four body slide to the floor.
Then there was a code blue called in the NICU, he rolled to his feet and took off running, Looking through the window, he let out a scream as they watched a team of doctors and nurses working on Kayleigh.
He was loosing his whole world all at once.
XXX
Opie put the one candle in the birthday cake, he picked it up carrying out to the back patio. Placing the cake on the table, he watched as his brothers and families played in the back yard, he let out a sigh, thinking about the last year.
His eyes scanned the yard, finding Ellie and Kenny, walking over to them, he smiled as he approached the swing set. “Dada!” He heard the little giggle, and saw Kayleigh in the swing.
He picked her up, cradling her close to him, kissing her face. “Hey baby girl! Daddy loves you! Happy birthday!”
Mamamamamama!” He saw Kayleigh pointing over his shoulder, and giggling and waving.
Opie smiled. “That is mamma, you want to go see her.” He walked  towards the patio. Walking up to his wife, he wrapped his arm around (Y/N)’s waist. “I love you. Someone wanted to say hi!”
She reached up taking the little girl. “I love you too Ope. Happy birthday sweet girl.”

What are the Benefits of Barrier Systems and Turnstile secured entry points
Hackers accessing information and burglars threatening the safety of people, business or companies, are some of the main challenges raising security concerns across the world. Precisely, the reason Security is a global concern today and companies are now recognizing the need for better electronic security. One of the best options of improving security in buildings and businesses that have been considered is the use of Turnstile or Turnstiles and Boom Barriers or Barrier Systems to regulator or control visitors or employee access.
If you look at Turnstile and Boom Barrier Gates from this point of view then you need to recognize them as authentic pillars of access control and electronic security systems integrated with CCTV Cameras, Door Frame Metal Detectors or DFMD and Biometrics. Turnstiles and Boom Barriers create physical Barrier or a check point, which breaks pedestrian or vehicular flow into single passageways and making it easier to recognise and eradicate potential threats and to allow only authorized visitors to pass through. When it comes to an effective entrance management systems or access control, Turnstiles and Automatic Boom Barriers are priceless means.
Benefits:
Improved Security
The use of Turnstiles is a robust and trustworthy solution for access control in stadiums and arenas for instance, which face very high flows of people. The Turnstile’s power-driven physical structure, totally controlled automatically, restricts visitors not holding a valid access document from entering the premises and guarantees passage of one single visitor at a time.
RFID Based System to prevent unauthorised entry:
Dissimilar to doors, Turnstiles can limit the number of visitors who can enter or exit on each presented credential and control the direction of passage also. In order to enter through a Turnstile or Boom Barrier, a visitor must first present a valid credential which could be RFID Card etc. This signals the barriers to unlock and allow one visitor to pass before immediately re locking. Some Turnstiles have enhanced detection features to identify and notify of cases such as dogging, wandering and forced passage. An unauthorized entry attempt will activate an alarm, alert the user and alert the control centre of the conflict.
The Access Control System allows Turnstiles to work in combination with doors, CCTV Cameras and other electronic security equipment to guarantee only specific cleared persons are using the entry. It can provide useful information for instance the specific identity, time and location of each person who entered and exited the facility or premises. The system can display live data used by management to track users or visitors, pinpoint alarm locations and recognise potential security threats.
Turnstiles and Barrier Systems accommodate an extensive range of credential readers, allowing authorities or facilities the choice of using virtually any type of media to authorize entry, viz; RFID Cards, barcodes, magnetic stripe,  or biometrics.
Single direction or bi-directionally:
Turnstiles can operate in a single direction and bi-directionally both.
•             Passage modes are independent for each direction
•             Free pass mode –It allows entry without any authorization – often used when visitors are not required to card out to exit.
•             Controlled passage: It requires an authorised credential before authorising entry.
•             Locked down mode: It remains locked and does not permit entry, even when presented with a legal credential.
 Emergencies and Power Outages
Emergencies and Power Outages will cause loss of Turnstile function unless backed up by an alternate power source. The access control system can also eliminate power as part of the facility’s emergency response protocol. This averts anyone from entering to maintain safety, but allows staffs inside to exit the facility.
Now, let’s see factors to consider when choosing a good barrier gate and turnstile for your Application
1. Compatibility
Before choosing the right Turnstile and Boom Barrier Gate requires considerations of different factors. You should first analyse the compatibility of the current systems and how a temporary or semi-permanent can successfully be integrated with your existing access control systems as the main factor to consider.
2. Technical Requirements
Apart from the compatibility of the current systems, you should analyse technical requirements viz; place of installation, functionality, materials, throughput rate and application area in case of industrial facilities, educational institutes or government premises, business centres, affect the choice of Boom Barriers and Turnstiles to be used.
3. Speed of access
When it comes to Boom Barriers Gates, you should first analyse the speed of access as a vital factor to consider as it impacts the number of Turnstiles required for a particular entrance and vehicle barriers.  As per the industry experts “the higher the speed, the better it is”
4. Frequency vs Security
As per the experts, the lower the frequency the higher the level of Security and the higher the frequency the lower the level security on the product. Therefore, you should consider this aspect also.
Conclusion: In conclusion, we can say that there are many benefits of Turnstile secured entry points and Barrier Systems but we should consider the aforementioned points when choosing a good barrier gate and turnstile for our applications.

Arplis - News: Mooresville Garage
Greetings Garage Journal viewers. I’m making my first post here to share the garage build completed in connection with a new home my wife and I recently built. As an introduction, my name is Jim, I retired after a 35+ year career in Houston, Texas and recently moved to the Mooresville, North Carolina area (north of Charlotte) on Lake Norman (in “The Point”). The home was the culmination of a two-and-a-half-year process of finding a lot, designing and then building the home. The home was a custom-build and began with a blank sheet of paper. The plan from the beginning included my desire for a garage a car and garage enthusiast would appreciate (at least my vision of it). In recent years, I’ve come to enjoy detailing my cars; therefore, the garage design was focused on providing a place to detail cars regardless of weather conditions. I also enjoy working on motorcycles and doing basic maintenance on cars and wanted a workshop area for those purposes. I’m glad to share the results here. Key elements of the garage: - 1,720 ft2, attached - 4 car bays, 1 golf cart bay, workshop area - High ceilings (12-1/2’ in front and back, increasing to 16’ in the middle section) - High lift garage doors (made by C.H.I.), powder coated aluminum frame, ½” insulated and tinted glass panels, 10’W x 8’H on car bays, Liftmaster 8500W Jackshaft WIFI garage door openers) - Porcelain tile floor with center drains (floor slopes toward drains) - Moduline Pro II cabinets - American Custom Lifts Model M1-6.5 single-post car lift - Wash bay on center “utility wall” that houses the equipment (Kranzle K165 water pump, Mosmatic 2-piece folding boom pole and wand, CR Spotless water deionizer, BigBoi car dryer, 2 Cox 30’ electric hose reels, VacuMaid Garage Vac Pro w/50’ hose, Prier hot/cold hose bib, Eley hose reel with 75’ garden hose, Moduline closet and fold-down workbench) - Compressed air system (Jenny J5A-60V air compressor, Prevost piping, fittings and valves, 2 Cox 30’ air hose reels) - Lots of ambient light via glass garage door panels and windows/skylights in the workshop. - Saylite square and linear LED pendants for primary lighting (2 x 8’ Square pendants over wash bay and lift, 2 x 4’ square pendants over other 2 bays, 6 x 8’ linear pendants in workshop and at front of each car bay). Each light fixture provides 4,000 kelvin and is dimmable. The Saylite fixtures are supplemented by 17 x 5” LED can lights throughout the garage. - Wall cladding consisting of a stainless-steel linen lower panel (supplied by Rigidized Metals) with a 3’ row of “Megawall” aluminum slat wall above the lower panel at certain places. - Full HVAC - TV and Audio via Savant home entertainment system I’m very happy with the result. We moved into the house in late June and I’ve enjoyed using the garage and especially the wash bay. Everything worked out as planned and I can’t think of anything I would have done differently. One pleasant surprise was the relative lack of overspray from the wash bay. I had planned to install a curtain (suspended on track from the ceiling) that would be pulled around the wash bay when in use. I’m happy I don’t need it. It took a while before I decided on the porcelain tile floor. I originally intended to use Swisstrax plastic modular flooring (15.75” squares that connect together). I really like the Swisstrax qualities of a clean look, easy maintenance and ease of installation. If you change your mind, it’s easy to take up and do something different. However, as the garage evolved and took shape, some challenges emerged with Swisstrax (in my opinion). The main difficulty is the shape of the garage, with a two 20-degree doglegs (the main one being in the garage center). I couldn’t get comfortable with how the Swisstrax would merge at those junctions. The angled pieces would join with no connection. Swisstrax offers some options to secure the junctions, but I couldn’t get the clarity I wanted on how secure they would be. Besides the junction issue, the design of the garage continued to gravitate towards a more upscale appearance and porcelain tile was the better design match. The tile I selected is from Walker Zanger with a 5 PEI rating (the hardest) and was designed for commercial use, so it conforms with the minimum dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) rating of .42. That means the footing is very secure, wet or dry. I’m glad a went with porcelain tile. The look is phenomenal. It’s expensive to install, but if done right, porcelain tile is among the most durable materials you can have in a garage. As I mentioned, I detail cars in the garage and lighting is very important. I spent a lot of hours looking at lighting options. I ultimately found Saylite and really liked their pendant LED lights. I was blown away by how good they look and work. The Saylite fixtures are supplemented by 5” LED can light. The ambient light in the garage during the day is good enough that lights are optional. At night, the LED lights put out just the right amount of illuminance on cars that I’m detailing, without being too much. A nice feature is a motion detector at the entrance into the house. So, for example, if you’re taking trash from the house to the bins in the garage, the motion will turn on the can lights to light a path to the bins. Selection of the wall cladding was also a long process. I wanted something to give the garage an upscale look and provide a barrier for moisture coming from the wash bay (although that hasn’t been a problem). The Moduline cabinets have a stainless-steel countertop. I thought extending that theme throughout the garage might make sense. I didn’t want something too flashy and over the top though (e.g., no shiny diamond plate). I found a company Rigidized Metals and really like the different stainless-steel textures and finishes they offer. I selected the “linen” texture for it’s rich and nonreflective look. In certain places, we added 3’ of Megawall slat wall above the linen stainless-steel. It matches the theme and adds the functionality of using the wall space to hang things and keep clutter up and off the floor. I use the car lift primarily for parking (to get another vehicle in the garage) and wanted a lift with a small footprint. American Custom Lifts makes a single-post lift that’s perfect for my application. My electrician spliced into the power supply on the lift and added an electrical outlet affixed to the center post. I use the outlet to hook up battery tenders for cars parked on or below the lift, which avoids the need to run extension cords across the floor. I use the compressed air primarily to run pneumatic Rupes polishers. The Jenny compressor has been great. With a 60-gallon tank, it has a lot of range and only takes a couple of minutes to recharge. My vision for the garage was influenced by viewing content on Matt Moreman’s “Obsessed Garage” YouTube channel, website and Facebook group. If you’re familiar with Matt, you may understand. He’s a garage and car enthusiast who has a lot of experience searching out the very best in products and equipment. My vision would have been much narrower if not for the information shared by Matt (and it kept expanding as he pursued new projects). For example, I would never have considered putting a wash bay inside a garage without seeing Matt do it in his. I decided to add a compressed air system after watching Matt install a system in his garage. It opened my eyes to how special a garage space can be, if you have the passion and desire to make it special. Some of the equipment in my garage is commercial-grade and somewhat hard to find since the manufacturers don’t market to the consumer. e.g., The pressure washer (Kranzle) is German made. The boom pole (Mosmatic) is Swiss made. The compressed air tubing and fittings (Prevost) are from a French company. The air and electrical reels (Cox) are American, but not heavily marketed. All are very high quality. Matt introduced me to these products and watching him install the equipment in his garage gave me the ideas and courage to do it in mine. As an added benefit, I was able to source and acquire the equipment through Obsessed Garage and Matt was very helpful consulting with me throughout the project. I feel fortunate I found Matt and Obsessed Garage just as I was beginning the project. It was great timing! The garage turned out fantastic and exceeded all my expectations. I hope everyone has a garage that puts a smile on your face the way mine does every time I go in it! Fall Checklist to Prepare Your Home for Winter
As the days become shorter and the weather begins to turn chilly, it’s time to start getting your home prepared for the winter months ahead. A little work now can save a lot of time, energy and money in the long run. So take a look at our checklist and make sure you’ve got everything all ready for winter!
Get Your Furnace Checked
One of the most important things to do before winter sets in is get your furnace checked before you need to rely on the heat. A regular checkup for your furnace will prolong its life, prevent carbon monoxide leaks and ensure everything is in working order. This tune-up will also ensure you’re getting maximum efficiency from your unit and not wasting your money.
Change Furnace Filters
A visit from your HVAC professional can tell you if it’s time for your furnace filters to be replaced. However, if you aren’t able to fit in an official visit, you can replace the filters yourself. Changing the filter allows you to keep the furnace from clogging, keeps it running more efficiently and stops it from circulating allergens and other harmful particles. How often the filter needs to be replaced will vary depending on what type of filter you get, so a little research may be needed.
Keep the Pipes Warm
Frozen pipes can burst, which can be a major debacle. They can require complicated fixes and result in serious flood damage if you’re not careful. To prevent this from happening, don’t completely turn off your heat when you leave the house. According to the Red Cross, keeping the temperature around 55°F will be enough to ensure pipes stay sufficiently warm.
If you’re going to be gone for an extended period and don’t want a high gas bill, you can turn off the water and drain the water pipes.
It’s easy to forget the outdoor hose spigot, but the water can freeze up and cause problems in your pipes. In order to prevent this, you can buy a foam covering that goes over the spigot and creates an air pocket around it. If you’re looking for a more low-tech option, put a towel around the faucet, although it may not seal as well.
If possible, you can also turn off the outdoor faucet’s water supply and drain the remaining water. This will eliminate the need for extra insulation.
Put Away the Gardening Supplies
Remember to disconnect and bring in all of your garden hoses. If water freezes inside of them, it can cause the hose to split. A connected hose can also make your outdoor faucet more susceptible to frozen pipes.
Ceramic planters that still contain plant life should be brought inside to warmer temperatures. If the plant was seasonal, empty the pots of all soil and store them out of the cold. This is also a good time to oil and clean metal tools before you store them in the shed. This will ensure they’re all ready for you once spring rolls around again!
Protect Your Plants
Perennial outdoor plants can really benefit from some added protection in colder areas.
The type of protection needed depends on the plant. Wrap burlap around young tree trunks, and add 12 to 18 inches of soil in a mound around the base of rosebushes.
If you really want to get fancy, you can invest in special tents that go around plants and shrubs. They protect the plants from the elements while letting sunlight and water in.
For more tips on how to get your garden ready for fall, check out our full guide.
Guard the Gutters and Air Conditioning
Right after most of the leaves have fallen is the perfect time to clean out your gutters. Without this maintenance, you can have major problems over the course of the winter. Water won’t be properly directed away from the house and can create serious foundation issues in your home.
If you’re able to get to this before the leaves fall, gutter covers can help prevent future buildup.
You also want to be sure to cover your air conditioning unit to keep leaves and snow from getting in. Covers made specifically for this purpose can easily be picked up from stores like Home Depot or Lowes.
Tune Up the Snow Blower
There’s no worse time to figure out that your snow blower isn’t working than right after the first big snowstorm. Taking your snow blower in for a tune-up will make sure it runs when you need it most. If you’re a bit more of a do-it-yourself kind of person, you can follow this checklist and handle the maintenance tasks all on your own.
Get the Chimney Cleaned
If you have a chimney and enjoy using it during the winter months, then scheduling an inspection is a must. When you burn wood in your fireplace, there’s a chance you’re creating a buildup of what’s called creosote. It’s essentially condensed smoke that clings to the side of the flue. This can ignite when you burn wood in the fireplace and cause a dangerous chimney fire. These fires burn at super-hot temperatures and can weaken the structure of the chimney, leading to damage. With brick chimneys, this can cause the brick to break down and give the fire access to the wood structure of your home.
Install a Chimney Balloon
After you’ve had your chimney inspected, consider investing in a chimney balloon. Chimney balloons (also called pillows or dampers) are essentially plugs that go into your chimney to prevent snow, bugs or drafts from entering into your home through the gap. If you don’t plan on using your chimney during the winter season, a chimney balloon can really help lower your heating bill.
Invest in a Carbon Monoxide Detector
As we seek to heat our homes in the winter, the sources of carbon monoxide (CO) begin to increase. These include any appliances that work by burning fuel. If you have a fuel-burning (i.e., not electric) clothes dryer, furnace, water heater, fireplace, stove or generator, you have a source of carbon monoxide. As higher concentrations of carbon monoxide in the air can be deadly, invest in a CO detector. This will monitor the levels and alert you with a noise and light when they get too high. Carefully read the instructions on the monitor to ensure the device will cover the entire span of your home. You may need to purchase more than one.
And while you’re at it, check to make sure your smoke detectors are still functioning as well.
Check Your Insulation
There are numerous areas where cold weather can make its way into your house. Before the weather starts to get too chilly, take a look around your home to make sure certain areas are still in prime condition.
First, check the seals around your windows. If you find the seals to be lacking, use weather stripping or caulk to seal around the frame. If you’re not satisfied with the amount of insulation this provides, you can remove the trim and put in an expanding foam.
You can also seal your doors by putting self-stick foam around the doorframes. Another easy way to weatherproof doors is to simply stick a door sweep at the bottom of the frame between the door and the floor.
One place you might not think about air escaping is through your outlets. Any hardware store will sell easy-to-install foam outlet covers (known as gaskets) that will prevent the cold air, which can get in around your electrical box, from coming into the home.
If you’re still not getting the results you want, it might be time to consider installing new insulation. Whether or not this is a DIY project depends on the types of insulation and your comfort level, but make sure you get the proper insulation for your geographic area. For more details, check out our post on insulating your home for winter.
Keep It Humid
By closing everything up and keeping the heat in, you’ll have taken your house into a state of hibernation. It’s important to remember that everything will dry out due to a lack of humidity in the air.
This can cause a number of problems, including ones that affect your health. Warm air tends to dry out the sinuses. As gross as it sounds, that mucus in your nasal passages actually helps trap viruses and other nasty stuff before it can get into your system.
If you want to stop your house from becoming too dry, consider using a humidifier to keep your sinuses happy and the rest of you more comfortable.
It takes some work to prepare your home for a long winter’s nap. Share any of your own tips for winterization in the comments!

Competition seeks the UK’s 10 best inventions
Ben Ryan’s son lost his arm when he was just 10 days old, and the prosthetic developed by his father has been shortlisted for the National Inventor Prize.
The hydraulically-operated prosthetic arm is one of 10 inventions which have been announced as finalists in a competition held by innovation foundation Nesta, with support from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
A nationwide search to find the UK’s best new inventor has turned up 10 top ideas which could eventually transform the lives of people throughout the UK.
The shortlisted entries will each receive £5,000 for more development and also receive mentoring from Barclays Eagle Labs, which is offering access to development facilities and equipment.
The winner is going to be announced in September 2018 and will receive £50,000 to help get the winning product to market.
The shortlisted inventions are described below:
Image: Ben Ryan holds his son by his prosthetic arm
:: “Ambionics” by Ben Ryan
Ben Ryan created the 3D printable, hydraulically-operated digital prosthetic arm, which is suitable for children under three years, specifically to help those like his two-year old son, Sol, who lost his arm at 10 days old.
As a former psychology teacher, Mr Ryan knew that the first two and a half years of a child’s life are crucial for brain development and learning. Yet up to 70% of children that age are not using prosthetics.
Using 3D printing and special software, the Ambionics project was born in Mr Ryan’s spare room in North Wales. He is currently trialling remote 3D scanning with families in Australia, North and South America, Europe and Africa. Ambionics has also partnered with Warwick University School of Engineering and is moving into the Menai Science Park on Anglesey in March.

:: “Canute” by Ed Rogers and Bristol Braille team, with Stef Sargent
Canute is a “Kindle for blind people”, which Bristol Braille have been working on in collaboration with the blind community, including Steph Sergeant, for five years.
The Canute is designed to be affordable at £800, and will be the world’s first multiline digital Braille display.
Existing braille displays on the market cost thousands and are only capable of showing one line. The Canute can be used for maths, music, textbooks and tables – and will be able to load text files by SD cards and USB connections.

:: “Smart Gum Shield” by Robert Paterson
Robert Paterson has invented a smart gum shield that monitors head impacts of individual athletes, rugby and hockey players which can alert the coach to potential head injuries. It will then prompt the coach to follow the head injury protocol for that particular sport.
Mr Paterson himself suffered from a misdiagnosed head injury playing rugby while he was at school.
In the 2015/16 season of Premiership Rugby, head trauma accounted for 25% of all injuries – becoming the sport’s most reported injury for the fifth season in a row.

:: “Gameball Platform” by microbusiness Neurofenix
The team of young entrepreneurs has invented an easy-to-use hand training device, or “Gameball”, which connects to tablet application to make stroke rehabilitation affordable and fun.
Inspired by relatives of the businesses’ co-founders who suffered strokes, Neurofenix aims to improve the life of stroke survivors who may not receive enough support after they leave hospital.
The team has co-created the Gameball platform with the help of stroke survivors, their families and physiotherapists from initial conception. It allows users to measure their progress and play games, either solely or against other users, in the comfort of their own homes.
:: “Aergo” by Hsin-Hua Yu (Sheana)
Aergo is a new seating system that provides posture support for young wheelchair users. The device has a network of inflatable pressure-sensitive air cells that promote comfort and prevent skin irritation and damage by adjusting to position changes automatically. The expandable frame also allows the system to grow and adapt to users as their condition evolves.
The system is designed for children with a range of conditions, including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy. Sheana will be working with John Chilton School in Ealing and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool.
Image: The Unity Door Handle. Pic: Connor Musoke-Jones
:: “The Unity Door Handle” by Connor Peter Musoke-Jones
Inspired by his friend and housemate, who found it difficult to open doors, Mr Musoke-Jones has invented an inclusive door handle that is easier and cheaper to install than fitting specialist doors.
Mr Musoke-Jones has developed it in collaboration with people with various hand and arm disabilities, combining ergonomics and anthropometrics to design a product that can be used by people with different abilities.
:: “New Medical Device” by Dr Tsong Kwong
Dr Kwong has invented an alternative approach in the field of medicine to benefit practitioners and healthcare systems.
:: “NuCath” by Nawar Al-Zebari of UroLogic
A new catheter made from smart materials and a simple design uses “shape memory” to change shape inside of the bladder, lowering drainage and retaining less urine – reducing the chance of infection.
In the UK over 500,000 serious urinary tract infections per year are contracted as a result of indwelling catheters, and these account for up to 40% of all hospital-acquired infections – with an annual mortality rate of over 2,000.
The estimated cost to the NHS of treating these infections is around £2bn annually.
Image: The finalists met for the first time in London. Pic: Nesta
:: “Spacelink” by Mark Singleton
Spacelink is a green building material that can be mass-produced as a new way of joining fibreglass boxes and tubes without metals or adhesives, allowing the construction of lightweight structures.
Weighing 40% as much as steel, it can reportedly support the same load while reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80%. It doesn’t rust or conduct electricity and can be disassembled for easy handling. It previously won the Travis Perkins Innovation Award 2016.
:: “Smart Carbon Monoxide Detector” by Billy Mitchell
The detector uses smartphone technology to self-test for carbon monoxide and sends a report on levels to landlords.
Mr Mitchell began his career as an apprentice electrician and now owns his own company. He came up with the idea for an invention when speaking to a gas reader who mentioned he was only able to access 30% of households he visited.
In recent trials the Smart Carbon Monoxide Detector has saved two lives. Currently only 20% of UK households have a working Carbon Monoxide detector, and 50 people a year die of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.
