This doublet is a great example of how high definition television has greatly impacted the details of what we see.  Makeup artists, set designers and costume designers all have to be even more focused on the small details than before, because everything will be seen in detail.  

This costume was first worn by Benedick Blythe as Phoebus in the 1997 made for television production of The Hunchback. It’s a well made and good looking costume - but the fine details are not nearly as apparent as they are in later productions. In 2006 it was seen again on Hans Matheson as Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex in The Virgin Queen, and in 2009 it appeared in the third season of The Tudors on Henry Cavill as Charles Brandon. In 2016 it was worn by Timothy Omundson as King Richard in Galavant.  It was seen most recently in 2021 on��Jedidiah Goodacre as Beckett Rush in Finding You.

I'm trying to figure out how old Alex Burgess was, and it is unnecessarily complicated.

The credits list initially seemed to solve my problem: Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, the actor for little Alex from 1916, is credited as "Alex Burgess (6)":

That initially looked like a straightforward indication of his age in that scene, indicating he was born in 1910. I had tentatively guessed 10 (knowing I'm not good at judging kids' ages) and the actor is apparently 13, which seemed like a fairly large gap considering given how fast kids grow, but, eh, there are excellent reasons not to want to cast an actual 6-year-old in a pretty dark episode if you've got a small older kid.

...Except then we've got "Benedick Blythe" (a 70-year-old actor) credited as "Alex Burgess (70)":

That can't be in-universe age, since old Alex Burgess in 2022 has to be 106 years older than the version played by Ainsworth. (Unless original Alex replaced himself with a kid born in 1952 somewhere during the episode and it was omitted from the episode plot-relevant enough to show. And Dream never noticed.)

I'm guessing little Alex was intended to be 6 years old and whoever wrote the credits either forgot to account for the weird lifespan extension or made the conscious choice to go by how old the character was intended to appear physically rather than chronological age, but it seems like going with the specified years, so "(1916)" and either "(2022)" or "(present day)," would have worked for identifying little Alex and old Alex while sidestepping the age issue. (The actors playing Paul also have parenthetical numbers "(18-42)" and "(62)," so there's the same weirdness with the latter.)

A/N: I’m so sorry to drop the sad chapter today my friends but I’m stuck in my room with Covid and I’m in my feels. 

You don’t consider yourself adventurous enough in life to have too many things you regret doing. One of the things you wish you could change, however, would be taking so long to realize that the man you pined over in your world of fiction, was actually right in front of you in the real world this whole time. You wasted so much time trying to manifest a Mr. Darcy, or a Gilbert Blythe, or hell- Laurie. You were playing Beatrice to his Benedick for far too long. You immersed yourself so fully and wholeheartedly into characters who add up to not much more than words printed on a page, when he was right there. You just had to put the book down for a moment to see.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year, and you can’t help but get nostalgic thinking about where you were this time last year. Walking home in the snow, tight against Bucky’s side, trying your best to share each other’s warmth. His cheeks were crimson from the way the wind was blowing snow in your faces. He didn’t even seem to care about the medal swinging from his duffel, or the wad of cash stuffed in his coat pocket. He only seemed preoccupied with leaning down to kiss you as frequently as possible without stopping. 

It hasn’t been all perfect. You worry about him constantly, and him boxing bothers you much more than you would have thought it did. Everynight he has a match, you worry yourself sick. He promises time and time again he’s careful, and he promises he’s going to play it safe. But you watch, and you see how he pushes himself and tries to push the boundaries to secure that next win. You can see it in his eyes, and that rush of adrenaline, his addiction to winning, slowly growing and building in his gut. 

He loves you, undeniably so- no statement can be truer. You don’t know if it your own insecurities rising or if you have reason to be concerned. But you lately have been asking yourself the question of who does he love more- you or the boxing. You try your best to push it out of your mind when it surfaces, and you try your best to be supportive in any way you can. You don’t want him to get hurt, but it frustrates you that he doesn’t care for himself. It’s so difficult to watch him from the sidelines when he kills himself with the training. His refusal to settle down kills you inside. 

But, it’s Christmas, and it’s not the time to dwell on things like this. You’re far too preoccupied with the festivities of the season to let yourself get sad thinking about all of this again. At the end of the day, it’s him. It’s always going to be him. You’re mailing cards, and buying presents. You’ve decided to stay home for the holidays this year, and you’re going to spend Christmas with Bucky. 

You both have been so busy lately. Most mornings, you need to be up and out before he wakes up, and you’re asleep by the time he gets back later that night. It’s very difficult having such conflicting schedules, and it makes the limited time together even more precious. So you are looking forward to spending some time off with him. 

It’s a really bad, messy fight, and his opponent didn’t play fair. It was horrible to watch, and it tore you apart. Your heart stopped when he was knocked out. It had never happened before. Not Bucky. He wasn’t the fighter to drop like that. It was a devastating blow. You ached watching him try to pick himself up at the ten count, but he just couldn’t do it. He was punched too hard, and he was struggling to breathe.

This changed him. It was more than just a bruised ego- he became more preoccupied with his training and matches than before. That fight was five months ago, and he has since won every single one. He was training longer hours, taking on bigger opponents, and entering into more fights. It worried you, the way he was straining himself, and the toll it was taking on him. He was distant, and it hurt, even though you knew he wasn’t upset with you. But it was killing you that your sweet, attentive Bucky was suddenly so seemingly lost. 

So Christmas was going to bring you both together again. The season has a way of doing that. It’s magical, and joyful, and wonderful, and everything is perfect. You had your mind made up that this was going to be the long overdue time together you both desperately needed. If he’d just let himself relax, and just let himself get wrapped up in the Christmas spirit, you both would have the best holiday yet. 

You had decorated your shared apartment, everything felt warm, and cozy, and relaxing, just the perfect Christmas feeling. You managed to wiggle both Lizzie and Alpine into their matching sweaters (that was 100% for you, but Bucky did smile), and you went overboard with gifts so under the tree was completely full of presents. You baked cookies, and planned a phenomenal Christmas dinner. And made plans for the whole week leading up. You had made plans throughout the month, but he was so tied up he couldn’t get away. You were especially disappointed he couldn’t come with you to get the tree, but he promised he’d make it up to you and you knew he would. So all Christmas week you had festive things planned, and he knew to be home. 

Monday night, he called and apologized that he couldn’t make it home. He tried his best to get out of it, but his manager booked him for back to back fights he couldn’t get out of last minute. You understood, and fell asleep on the couch alone in your buffalo plaid pjs, while Bucky’s sat unopened on the coffee table. 

Tuesday night, he came home late again but didn’t call. He made sure to be up in the morning when you left to explain, but you didn’t want to hear it. You said to make it up to you by being there tonight. He promised, and you stayed up worried sick about him. He came home Wednesday night well past midnight, drunk, and he woke you up when he bumped into the couch coming in at night. He tried to open the door to get into your shared bedroom, but when he realized you had locked the door, he had fallen asleep on the couch. You found him the next morning, in his holiday pajamas, but the shirt wasn’t buttoned up completely, so he must’ve fallen asleep before he finished or he was too drunk to manage the buttons on his own. 

The night before Christmas Eve, you’re sitting up waiting for him. No matter what time he comes home, you’re confronting him, and you’re talking out this problem. All your plans this week were soiled, and you aren’t letting him do this on Christmas. Tonight is the only chance you both have to work this out. You’re bundled up on the couch, coffee in hand, a book to read, and your cats curled by your side. 

Bucky knows you’re upset, and very disappointed in him. He knows he keeps dropping the ball, but he can’t help but think how much this will help you both in the long run. It hasn’t quite come up in conversation yet, but as far as he’s concerned, this is it. He’s found his person, and all he wants to do is take care of you and love you. 

He’s incredibly insecure that he isn’t good enough for you. You’re the most beautiful, most intelligent, most amazing woman he’s ever known, and he’s just… well, he’s just some punk who beats up other punks for cash. You’re not like him. You’re so much more accomplished in life than he can ever hope, and he wants to be enough for you. 

All he wants is to be the man good enough for you. 

He knows you wanted him here, but he can’t pass up the opportunities to fight when he can. He’s scrimping and saving, and working harder to give you the best gift he can manage. He wants the title, and by winning the title, he gets more than he’s ever managed before, and he can buy you the world if you asked for it. He’d be able to spoil you, make you proud to be on his arm. He knows if he can just push himself a little harder, and make the sacrifice now, he’ll be able to give you everything.

It’s 3:07 in the morning when you hear his keys in the door. 

“Hi,” he says, softly. He’s like a puppy that is anticipating a hit on the nose with a newspaper. Your silence frightens him.

It feels like an eternity before you even acknowledge his existence. You look over at him when he starts to take his shoes off, and he feels the urge to apologize for taking them off too loudly. 

“Where have you been?” you ask, voice breaking. You’re doing your best to play off like you haven’t been crying. 

“I got stuck down there,” he tries to explain, “I’m so close to the title- I couldn’t pass up the match tonight. He’s a whole level above me in weight, I took his spot… I did it.. I’m so close.”

“You said you’d be here,” you say, almost too calmly. He winces. 

“I just need-”

“All you care about is that title-”

“No it’s not-”

“I never see you, this is officially the longest conversation we’ve had in weeks.”

“Can’t you see what winning it would mean? I know it’s hard now and I hate it, but this is good for us.”

“I don’t care about any of it!” you exclaim. “I care about you! These past months… literally months… do you know how hard it is to watch you kill yourself over this? The injuries, the exertion, the lack of sleep, everything, and your refusal to let anything else get in the way of it? The worrying night after night that you’re going to die on that mat and I never get to see you? The empty promises and the waiting and the disappointments.”

“I’m doing all of this for you,” he pleads. 

“I told you what I wanted, this wasn’t it,” you scoff. “Do you think I care about money? Or titles? When I’m stuck wondering if that last time I saw you was the last time I’ll ever see you?”

“I-”

“And on top of that fear, you aren’t coming home when you promise, you’re making ever risk I already worry about greater! You’re killing yourself. The training, and the god damn restrictive diets, and the last nights, and the drinking, and you keep on fucking promising you’ll stop and you just dismiss me when I express any concern or anytime I try to help. I just- I can’t keep doing this!”

“It’s not going to be like this forever, just-”

“I’m sorry, I can’t hear any more timelines, or excuses. I just needed you here and you were so blindsided by all of this that you couldn’t do that one little thing. You couldn’t just come home and put on the fucking stupid Christmas pajamas and just sit here. That’s it. I didn’t want anything else,” you don’t mean to have the tangent you started on. But you’re hurt, and this has been building up for months- and this week solidified all of this to you. 

“I’m leaving,” you announce, your tone suddenly more calm. You take a deep breath, and scoop up Lizzie in your arms. You straighten out your back the best you can, and muster up everything you have left in you. “I’m sorry, Bucky, but this is over.”

“Doll, please…”

“Bucky… I love you too much, and I hope you’ll finally be able to see past whatever this is. This- this obsession with winning, and money, it’s corrupted all the parts of you I loved the most.” 

He doesn’t even say anything, because a part of him knows your right. And he’s too proud to admit it still. He watches you grab a bag out of the closet and pack it up to leave, and he says nothing. He sits on the couch, head in his hands, and the only sounds he hears are your slipper covered footsteps, throwing random items of yours in a bag. 

“I’m going Kara’s,” you say, voice broken, hoping he says something. You’re so fragile you know if he says anything, it’d be enough to stay and forget everything you just said. You adjust your backpack over your shoulders and then pick up Lizzie’s carrying case. Nothing. 

“Okay then,” you sniff, “Um, I’ll be back for my stuff in the morning, don’t be here when I am- okay?” No response. You just leave. It’s all you feel like you can do, pushed to this, and you feel small piling into your car and driving to your friend’s apartment. 

He followed you down to the street to stop you, but by the time he got there it was too late. He stood in your empty parking spot and watched your car drive all the way down until he couldn’t see it.
