Belthar is a land of high mountains and green valleys perched atop a planet shard. Rivers reaching the rim fall into the void miles below, forming clouds that rise back up above the land. A secret cavern holds the Belthan war fleet, 30 galleys pulled by blue dragons. (Valerie Valusek, D&D module M1: Into the Maelstrom, TSR, 1985)

i wanna type up some stuff about a personal headcannon of mine: quantonium "fever". Honestly the name is more a nod to "uranium fever" than anything, but it's more of a delirium caused by unprotected exposure to the element, that effects a minority of most species populations. Basically any species - monster, alien, human alike - can be effected by this, it's purely a random chance of genetics.
This is also partially based on Gallaxhar's "sad backstory" that gets. y'know. interrupted. There's a point where he mentions what most people refer to as like, his romantic partner? it's been like a year since i saw the movie. Giant Belthar maybe? and that he did some space traveling with her, and then they got in an argument. Honestly, this whole thing isn't a headcannon as much as me explaining Gallaxhar's motivation and making a new Thing to subject ocs to ! :]
The idea is that Raw Quantonium (such as the almost liquid-looking state, and when it was still in the asteroid, basically any "unfused" or otherwise "pure" form of quantonium) can cause hallucinations and delusions of grandeur in those who have this genetic susceptibility. The main syndromes are seeing a "Fairy", "Ghost", or other apparition that haunts you. It can look like someone you used to know, but it's usually pretty clear it's not the same person due to it's pale and translucent form. If Gallaxhar was using human terms instead of what he was used to, he probably would have described it as "a giant fairy", as it's usually something that appears at about the same-ish size as you would be, give or take about a foot range in size - not that it would have a set size. In the beginning, the "Quantonium Ghost" usually just is kinda There, unsettling you by just being there. Everyone's experiences after that point differs, but it usually boils down to the ghost pressuring you onto some "Great Quest". For Gallaxhar, it was "saving his world", then "saving his species", which lead him to him destroying his world to repopulate another and "Start anew". Once he lost access to the Quantonium, the ghost faded, but the poisoning of the mind remained, and his plans to repopulate the planet became more and more warped as time went on, with or without the Quantonium by his side.
Some other aspects are Paranoia, an inflated sense of your impact on the world around you ("every action i take has an effect on the universe even if I don't see it" positively or negatively), and violent tendencies. Most afflicted by this condition will also self isolate, though the reasons change from person to person.
I'd also like to note, in a "fused state" (such as Susan's case), the Quantonium is usually muffled enough that it won't cause Quantonium fever. Quantonium is the only "Energy Element/Compound" that's documented to have this, and even with this, it's considered one of the more tame side effects out of the main six energy elements documented so far.

A flaming-eyed devil, he came toward the chariot of Nemone, but he was still afar when Tarzan saw the tuft of white hair in the center of his mane between his ears. It was Belthar!
Nemone please get some fucking therapy oh my gods
I don't think she knows that Tarzan regularly kills lions though, so this might not purposefully a suicide attempt........

Oh I love players interacting with my stuff, the new campaign is gonna feature a rogue/warlock played by my best friend, and I'm just so excited to see him in world it's gonna be amazing. I love dreamy mindfuckery and him getting his patron is going to be so good
Another thing I love is when my players think round my stuff - it's amazing what my guys can come up with. It does mean a whole lotta improv (I had to make Belthar's an HR policy off the bat, and make a drinking game bc she fancied showing off to her new boss by drinking a goliath under the table, not a smart move) but I love that realisation smile on their faces when they realise I'm having to make stuff up
What's your favourite thing about DMing? Mine is the world building - I'm currently putting together a map of a continent for an upcoming campaign
worldbuilding is really really fun! i love coming up with cultures and interpersonal interactions between different races, economic classes, explanations for different game classes, monsters and their place in the world, the gods and how they interact with the world, the government and the history of different nations, various organizations and groups…
i also like designing encounters. not mechanically, exactly, but coming up with interesting villains and dungeons and other stuff that just exists in the world. i like to design how these things came to be and what they do now, but never what could happen to them, since that’s up to the players
and of course putting the players into the world! i love exploring the backgrounds of the player characters and figuring out how they fit in the world and how to explore their past and their present, who might know them and how, what encounters would be well suited for them, how to develop them through the story…
i just. i love d&d a whole lot and i love to dm v much ;v;

There was a rattling of chains at the far end of the room, followed by a terrific roar as Belthar sprang to his feet. Nemone shrank suddenly away from the ape-man; a shudder ran through her body, and an expression, half fright, half anger, suffused her face. "It is always something," she said irritably, trembling a little. "Belthar is jealous. There is a strange bond linking the life of that beast to my life. I do not know what it is; I wish I did." A light, almost of madness, glittered in her eyes. "I wish I knew! Sometimes I think he is the mate that Thoos intended for me; sometimes I think he is myself in another form; but this I know: When Belthar dies, I die!"
>.> Is magic real now
Also, I think it's hilarious that Jane has not been mentioned once in this whole book.
(for the record I assume that the secret queen is poking the lion from some secret hidden room or something)

Surprisingly, Jad-Bal-Ja has not shown up yet to crash the party.
But at this point I assume Belthar will get free and then Jad-Bal-Ja will come bursting through a wall like the koolaid man to kill him.
If I had a nickel for every time Tarzan's pet lion was declared a god after usurping the lion god throne from another lion, I'm assuming that by the end of this book I'll have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's really weird that it's probably going to happen twice.
