Ahmanson had apparently long admired the work of Dreher, who has authored numerous conservative books and previously wrote for the Beliefnet blog and The Dallas Morning News. But according to the two sources, Ahmanson began to sour on his beneficiary in 2021, when Dreher, in a blog post debating circumcision, wrote the following: “All us boys wanted to stare at his primitive root wiener when we were at the urinal during recess, because it was monstrous. Nobody told us that wieners could look like that.” Incredibly, that was the “first red flag” for Ahmanson, one source told me, adding that the rift had been building for about a year.

"Melancholy Baby" by Severo Perez
In Perez's compelling narrative, the protagonist, Oscar Buscoso, embarks on a profound journey of questioning religious traditions that closely mirrors my own exploration of faith throughout my life. Oscar's interactions with the priest serve as a reflection of my analytical and introspective approach to understanding the intricate relationship between spirituality and science. These dialogues highlight the complexities of belief and the challenges that arise when faith is scrutinized through a critical lens.
A particularly significant moment in the storyline occurs when Oscar comes to the realization that faith is not static; instead, it evolves as a result of inquiry and personal exploration. This revelation resonates deeply with me, given my Catholic upbringing, where I was often taught that faith should remain unwavering. Yet, my experiences have led me to understand that questioning and seeking are essential components of spiritual growth.
The concept of Nepantla, which refers to a state of being in-between, is prominent in Oscar's negotiation of doubt and belief. This duality of faith and skepticism encapsulates my own spiritual journey as I navigate the delicate balance between holding onto traditions and embracing new perspectives.
Ultimately, this narrative inspires me to actively cultivate my curiosity as a powerful tool for personal growth and deeper understanding. It encourages me to maintain a harmonious balance between honoring my traditions and welcoming innovation, which is crucial in shaping my identity and spiritual path.

A mix of the options?
Back in the late '90s (yes, I'm that old), I became a pagan of no real description beyond subscribing to pantheism. Because of my ancestry, I did briefly look into heathenry, but the Norse gods seemed pretty scary to me, so I backed off.
Sometime in that period, I read a novelization of the Norse myths. Can't remember the title. The author had taken the unorthodox view that all Loki's positive actions were indeed his own deeds, but that all his negative actions were actually done by Utgard-Loki. It was the first time I had seen anything sympathetic toward Loki. I was posting on BeliefNet at the time, if anyone remembers that, and I asked what people thought of the idea. The response was that not only was that incorrect (it is contrary to everything else I've read since), but Loki was bad and evil and no good and I should stay far away from him. Well, I wasn't really interested in any of the Norse gods besides Loki, I still thought they were scary, so again, I moved on.
In 2012, I (by this time, a long-time Kemetic who was drifting away from it) was writing a fantasy story based on an obscure fairy tale set in Norway. For reasons, I had decided that, while events might happen that characters attributed to gods, no gods would appear in the story. Well, it's a story that seems to have a mind of its own, and among other things, I started getting the nagging impetus to put Loki in it. I resisted.
Then, my dad and my sister both happened to come visit me over the same long weekend. We decided to watch some movies that night, which the two of them chose. Without consciously doing so, they picked movies with a Norse theme. Not necessarily serious ones, but on theme all the same. My dad picked an old favorite of his, Erik the Viking. My sister picked two movies I hadn't seen: Trollhunter and Thor. Afterward I had yet more Norse thoughts in my mind, and after they left and I got back to my story, that "put Loki in the story" impetus became so strong that I started to doubt that the Loki in my head was merely a fictional character. So I finally went to sit outside with a candle and incense and an offering to find out what he had to say.
Poll: What got you into Heathenry/Asatru/Norse Paganism?
Or if you consider yourself eclectic, what drew you to venerating the Norse gods.
