The Magnavox Odyssey [1971] + Pong [1972]
The most famous Magnavox Odyssey game is Table Tennis. It was the direct inspiration for Pong, and there is an infamous lawsuit decided in Magnavox's favor to that effect, which became famously the first of decades of copyright trolling putting up a hundreds-of-millions tollbooth on the mere concept of video games at home. If we take gaming as a legitimate art form, which is the essential premise of this blog, then it's the equivalent of copyrighting the concept of canvas. Despicable! If we are to take gaming as a legitimate art form, though... It behooves me to mention its business legacy, and move on briskly.
Table Tennis might look for all the world like Pong, (I'm not going to pretend like we can talk about one without the other,) but the way each handles is worlds apart. The elements of Table Tennis are the two pawns, the ball, and the line separating one side of the screen from the other. The pawns are controlled with both a horizontal and vertical dial, much like the horizontal and vertical alignment control dials familiar from period televisions. This direct inversion of The Outer Limits' famous promise is telling of its conceptualization as a "TV Game," designed by a television manufacturer. It's a peek at TV from the technician's perspective, or perhaps the television's itself, all light and no content. The ball always travels at a constant horizontal rate, changing direction when it hits something solid, but its vertical position can be directly manipulated by the last player to touch it with an "English" knob, which fictionalizes it as the spin you give the ball... but that's a lie. Spin, in real life, is applied at the moment and thereafter set. If the ball goes off-screen The line exists, but is, in Table Tennis, intangible and powerless. Players can cross the pawns across the line freely or eliminate it or change its location.
This marks a distinct change from the inherently hostile gameworlds we've seen up until now. Here, the players are in nigh-absolute control of the game. It inherits something of the designer Ralph Baer's experience, the sheer delight of drawing light on the CRT. Basic components like the size of the squares or width of the net or speed of the ball can be customized by the player. The TV screen has become a playground. For example, the players could theoretically completely ignore intended play to create a state of equilibrium and adjust the distance between the pawns for use as a metronome, or at incredibly-close distances, granular sound synthesis. This freedom isn't really the players', though. They could exercise it, but they're not encouraged to. It's the designer's. To freestyle with your square of light would be "play", but it would be the play you do with a toy, not with a game. A game has rules, constaints. The Magnavox Odyssey can have a lot of rules, they're just not enforced by hardware. Thus far, paratext like genre or history has informed how we fictionalize the mechanics of a game, now the rules themselves bare their artificiality and voluntary nature as they leap out of the screen and onto the page. Literally, you are given transparent overlays to superimpose on your screen and circumscribe yourself. Lots of the games come with further extensions like board games and cards.
The games of the Magnavox Odyssey beg to be considered as a whole, like the games of a WarioWare or other minigame compilation, seeing as they all came bundled together with the unit. They are all variations on a theme, which is to say all the other games are based on Table Tennis. It reminds me of the old "creativity test" where you have to write down as many things as you can think of to do with a paperclip. These people, who as far as they know are the innovators of the video game, sit at the dawn of the medium and are really roaring to take it for a spin and see what can be done with three squares and a line. Some games, like Cat And Mouse, want you to move on a grid. Some games, like Handball, make the line solid. Some games, like Invasion, use the "RESET" button that returns the ball when it leaves the screen instead as a "fire" button. Some games, like Fun Zoo or University Of The Solar System which are quizzes to challenge children, or Ski in which you trace a dotted line, could be adequately replaced with two tokens or better yet flashlights to shine on the board to indicate player position. Some games, especially the ones that attempt to emulate team sports with only two pawns like Baseball or Football, spiral into arcane knots that run on for pages and are approximately as complex as... let's say Settlers Of Catan [1995].
The Magnavox Odyssey also has lightgun games, bringing us 3 for 3 on games being a medium where perhaps the most significant direct interaction you can have with the world is shooting it with a gun. It makes you question if there's something fundamental about video games that makes them well-suited for shooting and/or violence. I think there is, but moreover that it's not driven into existence by a rotten, violent culture. Less cynically: It's a way of conceptualizing space and extending player agency beyond the immediate vicinity, nigh-instantaneously and in immediately apprehendable and intuitive ways, same as the ball off the pawn in either Table Tennis or Pong. And death is easy to program, a moving object becomes a non-moving object or even stops existing.
The visual impact of the two square pawns, not to mention the way they explore rules and rely heavily on external text and for the most part familiarity with external referent to function as legible, reminds me of nothing so much as The Marriage [2006], a flashpoint for discussion of the expressive potential of rules as art and a bold stride of minimalism, which almost could have been on the Odyssey save for the gendering colors. I'd like to take a closer look at the alphabetically-first Magnavox Odyssey game: Analogic.
In Analogic, the players begin at opposite corners of the board and the goal is to get to the other corner. Whoever is first wins, but motion is confined to a grid labelled with arbitrary numbers, and moreover, each player can only move to adjacent squares that would make the sum of the number they're moving to and the sum of the number their opponent is currently on either even or odd (depending on starting position.) On top of this strategic level that could again be replicated with tokens or flashlights, the players must maintain a constant volley of the ball. Keep in mind, the players will be positioned diagonally at the start, and possibly for the entire run of the game, while the ball without constant player input automatically moves horizontally. Once again, even with the OdySim emulator I am bereft of the experience of actually being able to get hands-on and play the damn thing, not only because of the lack of a player 2, but because of the fundamental difference between a keyboard press that will move me at a constant rate and the dial that will let me zip the ball or creep along, so I'm really mostly analyzing the manual here — but I can only imagine that this experience is tense and taxing, even if you know your addition front and back. Also, the players are nominally in competition by virtue of the win condition, but in every other aspect they are inexorably, fascinatingly mutually parasitic. Not only must a connection between players constantly maintained with effort, but the very rules of movement are constructed only collaboratively. This doesn't "mean" anything, like The Marriage is explained to... but it could, easily, with a simple twist of the mind, a recontextualization. There's just as much here as there about the balancing act of pursuing your own goals while maintaining the fraught interpersonal bonds that keep us healthy. It goes to show there's still gold in the 1-Bit Singular Activity Game hills, that works of art don't truly get superseded, be it Table Tennis by Pong or Pong by Ultra Pong [1977]. Art lives in the eternal now.
Pong still largely retains the sheen of the "first video game" in popular culture, even though it's since been outmoded many times over on that count, and part of that is the business savvy of Atari — such as pioneering video game microtransactions by charging 25 cents a taste, instead of $100 upfront (equivalent to $611 in 2019 dollars) for something almost nobody on Earth knew what was yet — turning Pong into something actually popular with the mass public, but part of it is also that, in its stripped-back constrained style, it really does look and feel like the ur-game. Even a short survey of game history up to this point (like of Galaxy Game [1971]) shows that the technology at Atari's disposal could have been pushed much further towards representation and sophistication than they were. No, the primitivism of Pong shouldn't be understood as economic or technological limitations, but as aesthetic ones. Pong is minimalist, honed to a sterile knife's edge.
It was Atari's second time up to bat with the arcade-game model, the first being Computer Space [1971], which was their take on Spacewar [1962], but changed up far more compared to the inspiration than Galaxy Game or Pong, with UFOs that moved in different patterns instead of a star or another player, and bullets curving under the influence of gravity. Their next game would have a punchier name, to match less convoluted gameplay. Pong was actually apparently designed as a telephone-game version of Table Tennis, the designer Allan Alcorn in ignorance of it, under orders to make a tennis game from Nolan Bushnell, who had seen the Table Tennis game. It kinda shows: There's none of the delight in the novelty of drawing on a CRT monitor that bled through into the open design of Table Tennis. For the first time on this blog, the quietly confident craftsmanship of a video game that knows what video games is. The instructions are three lines long, printed on the front of the machine.
The square screen enclosing the play is mostly empty space, but all that vertical space means is that you have more ground to cover and less time to react than on a more standard horizontal-rectangle display. Points (an Atari concept inherited from Computer Space) are the point, written out far bigger than anything else, parceled out one-by-one until victory. The paddles are small, the ball is smaller, and both are fast, in contrast not just to Table Tennis but also the downright stately and methodical Spacewar. The "English" mechanic is replaced with harsh zig-zag trajectories either randomly assigned from half-court or ricocheting wildly from encounter with the minutely different parts of the paddle, so there's no thought, nothing clever, just action. It's a raw reflex test: you can get to any point on the screen in no time flat, but can you operate the dial with both speed and precision? It's a closer approximation of a real white-knuckle sports experience than anything the Odyssey could provide. Such a frenzy entranced.
Magnavox Odyssey games may have pitted players 1 & 2 against each other, but given how the construct of the games only exist by a constant act of collaboration and good faith on both parts, or how it's pitched squarely at the hypothetical nuclear family unit, it makes more sense to conceive of the relationship between the players as nominally adversarial. Pong is much more the competition, and without the constant labor of just upholding rules, players can enter a flow state of conquering the challenges (or challengers) before them. Its location in public means that this is a game anyone with sight and a hand can pick up, even complete strangers, who will then have something to relate about. The advertising shows as a demographic, instead of rosy-faced children, hip 1970s young adults, or boast that its understated cabinet is suitable for "sophisticated locations," perhaps coyly alluding to the massive sexual tension of mingling over a game of Pong [1972] surrounded by ferns and wood paneling. (Atari’s first attempt at a wholly original title, Gotcha [1973], would be infamous for its purposefully boob-evoking controllers.) Video games wouldn't become widely solitary affairs like their cousin the pinball machine until taken back into the home for good with the rise of the Atari 2600 and the first personal computers instead of ARPANET-connected mainframes. I'll regrettably be skipping ahead past multiplayer games from here on out, and thus most of this 1-bit era I'm growing fond of. It's worth noting, though, that in doing so I could arguably be missing the entire point of the medium of games, those communal or outward-looking experiences that the titles covered so far have been purpose-built for.
Like Table Tennis was on the Odyssey, Pong was taken as prototype in the arcade, both by Atari and by what was now an industry of a new class of professional video game developers. Just look at this incomplete list of Pong variations and derivatives, which doesn't even count, like, Breakout [1976], sideways solo Pong. As much as that paints a bleak picture of an industry unwilling to explore the boundaries of what games were capable of like on the Odyssey in favor of chasing a quick buck, well, it's a very incomplete picture of what quickly became a pretty big industry: Pong, overnight, forever changes video games from a utopian proposition into a primarily commercial one.

Selpic S1 is a portable quick-drying printer that can print on pretty much surface, even if it’s not flat. It’s great for craft projects, small businesses, or just labeling all the things.

Design and Specs
The Selpic S1 measures 1.5 x 4.3 x 4.7 inches (4 x 11 x 12cm), and weighs a minuscule 13.6 ounces (386g), making it just about pocket-sized.
The S1 model squirts out ink from a half-inch print head, while the S1+ can print twice as high.
Inside the box you’ll find the Selpic S1 main body, a magnetic cover that attaches to the base to protect the print head, a starter ink cartridge, and a micro-USB charging cable. The internal battery should give you around 6 hours of printing, with 72 hours standby time.
To print whatever is currently loaded, you just press the P button on the side. The LED on top turns green to indicate it’s ready. Then swipe the printer across your surface. An optical sensor ensures the print comes out correctly, and can operate at up to 30mm/s, which is much faster than you can reasonably run it along a surface.
Like all printers, the real sting is in the price of the cartridges, at $80 each. Six colors are available, but you can only print in a single color at a time. Selpic claims the 40ml cartridges can print up to 900 A4 pages at 5% coverage, though this is a curious measurement since it can only print a half-inch line. Still, if you’re looking to compare like for like, 900 pages is the number you’ll want. As a small manufacturer, no official recycling program is available, though your local recycling center may accept them as generic inkjet cartridges.
Selpic App
Creating and uploading your prints is done using the Selpic app. You’ll need to connect over Wi-Fi to the ad-hoc network broadcast by the Selpic device (and initially use the password 12345678). This is annoying to do every time you turn it on, and we can’t help but feel Bluetooth would have been a better solution. That said, once connected it worked reliably, albeit somewhat slow to upload.
The ability to enter multilingual text is unique.
The app allows you to design a print using a number of key components:
Multilingual text. As long as you have the right input method and fonts on your phone, you can print any language you like.
Time and date stamp.
Weight display, designed to be used with industry-standard USB and Bluetooth scales, which act as input devices.
Auto-incrementing numerical counter, which adds one each time the label is printed (or any other increment you want).
Code128 numeric barcode.
QR code.
Custom image.
All design elements can be mirrored, for printing on the reverse of a clear object, or color inverted. Any number of the same element can be added, resized, or rotated.
Note: at the time of review, the iOS app was unable to upload custom images. We’ve been promised this should be fixed by next week with a new firmware update. 
It’s clear from that feature list that the software has been designed with small businesses in mind, despite the Kickstarter being marketed with a more crafty angle.
The app is relatively easy to use but suffers a little on a small mobile screen, especially because it’s locked to landscape view. In order to accommodate all the design tools needed, a small toggle switch sits at the bottom of the screen. This toggle changes between component-specific settings, like font and font size, to the generic component controls like rotate and delete. And of course, tapping on a text entry form brings up the keyboard, which then obscures more than half of the total screen real estate. Hopefully, the app will improve in time. Switching to a vertical view to make use of a smaller keyboard would be a great start, even if it meant having to scale down the print preview.
Having said all that, it’s still infinitely more functional than your basic label printers.
The only thing you might expect it to be good for, but actually isn’t, is printing addresses. There’s no import or mail merge functionality, and even if there were, the print head is too small to print a full address at once.
While we have yet to hit a maximum printing width, we should note that longer labels take a long time to upload from the app as the file is rasterized. If you try to write a really long label, it can feel like the app has crashed.
What Can The Selpic S1 Print On?
We tried on a variety of surfaces, with overall great success.
Obviously, flat card and paper was easy. No issues there, and the QR code was successfully read by my phone.
On skin, we couldn’t get anything useable, just a large smudge.
On a wine glass, we managed a perfect print, despite the curved surface and optical difficulty. The quick-drying ink didn’t wash off under running water, and needed to be scrubbed off.
A bigger print on a mostly clear plastic box didn’t go as well but was still acceptable. Keeping the printer straight at this sort of angle was difficult, and some sort of optical sensor error left one of the letters skipping.
Printing inverted text on the inside of our polytunnel door was also mired by a small smudge, but still legible.
On rough but otherwise flat wood, the print was perfect. I can see gardeners making great use of this for plant labels.
One often forgets what one has planted in raised beds.
Overall, I’m really impressed with the “print anywhere” claim. Most of the printing hiccups we did experience would likely be perfected with repeated use. There’s a knack to printing well that you’ll learn.
Should You Buy the Selpic S1 (or Back the S1+)?
The Selpic S1 is the sort of gadget that you’re bound to find a use for around the home, but at around $250 for a starter pack plus $80 for additional cartridges, I expect you’ll want to know beforehand precisely what your use cases will be to justify the cost. If you find yourself writing the same message repeatedly on something that otherwise can’t be fed into a traditional printer, then this may be the perfect gadget for you.
If you’re a home user that just wants to put text labels on all the things–storage boxes, personal possessions and such–you might want to stick with traditional tape-based label printers (or a pen!). Changing the text often and uploading it to the Selpic each time gets tedious after a while. For English text anyway, the ease of typing on a physical keyboard and hitting the print button is faster. The results aren’t nearly as impressive, but those sorts of labels tend to be functional rather than attractive. The real power of the Selpic is repetitive printing and otherwise awkward surfaces.
There are also obvious benefits for small businesses and craft sellers, that need to print serial numbers, tickets, or barcodes onto packaging. It’s a handy little device.
We’d recommend backing the Kickstarter now to get early bird pricing on the S1+ model with one quick-drying cartridge for just $149 (but be quick, there’s a limited number available at that price!). As with all Kickstarters, there’s always a risk involved, but in this case we think it’s minimal. The technology works, it’s just question of whether Selpic can meet their shipping targets.

The Selpic S1 measures 1.5 x 4.3 x 4.7 inches (4 x 11 x 12cm), and weighs a minuscule 13.6 ounces (386g), making it just about pocket-sized.
The S1 model squirts out ink from a half-inch print head, while the S1+ can print twice as high.
Inside the box you’ll find the Selpic S1 main body, a magnetic cover that attaches to the base to protect the print head, a starter ink cartridge, and a micro-USB charging cable. The internal battery should give you around 6 hours of printing, with 72 hours standby time.
To print whatever is currently loaded, you just press the P button on the side. The LED on top turns green to indicate it’s ready. Then swipe the printer across your surface. An optical sensor ensures the print comes out correctly, and can operate at up to 30mm/s, which is much faster than you can reasonably run it along a surface.
Like all printers, the real sting is in the price of the cartridges, at $80 each. Six colors are available, but you can only print in a single color at a time. Selpic claims the 40ml cartridges can print up to 900 A4 pages at 5% coverage, though this is a curious measurement since it can only print a half-inch line. Still, if you’re looking to compare like for like, 900 pages is the number you’ll want. As a small manufacturer, no official recycling program is available, though your local recycling center may accept them as generic inkjet cartridges.
Selpic App
Creating and uploading your prints is done using the Selpic app. You’ll need to connect over Wi-Fi to the ad-hoc network broadcast by the Selpic device (and initially use the password 12345678). This is annoying to do every time you turn it on, and we can’t help but feel Bluetooth would have been a better solution. That said, once connected it worked reliably, albeit somewhat slow to upload.
The ability to enter multilingual text is unique.
The app allows you to design a print using a number of key components:
Multilingual text. As long as you have the right input method and fonts on your phone, you can print any language you like.
Time and date stamp.
Weight display, designed to be used with industry-standard USB and Bluetooth scales, which act as input devices.
Auto-incrementing numerical counter, which adds one each time the label is printed (or any other increment you want).
Code128 numeric barcode.
QR code.
Custom image.
All design elements can be mirrored, for printing on the reverse of a clear object, or color inverted. Any number of the same element can be added, resized, or rotated.
Note: at the time of review, the iOS app was unable to upload custom images. We’ve been promised this should be fixed by next week with a new firmware update. 
It’s clear from that feature list that the software has been designed with small businesses in mind, despite the Kickstarter being marketed with a more crafty angle.
The app is relatively easy to use but suffers a little on a small mobile screen, especially because it’s locked to landscape view. In order to accommodate all the design tools needed, a small toggle switch sits at the bottom of the screen. This toggle changes between component-specific settings, like font and font size, to the generic component controls like rotate and delete. And of course, tapping on a text entry form brings up the keyboard, which then obscures more than half of the total screen real estate. Hopefully, the app will improve in time. Switching to a vertical view to make use of a smaller keyboard would be a great start, even if it meant having to scale down the print preview.
Having said all that, it’s still infinitely more functional than your basic label printers.
The only thing you might expect it to be good for, but actually isn’t, is printing addresses. There’s no import or mail merge functionality, and even if there were, the print head is too small to print a full address at once.
While we have yet to hit a maximum printing width, we should note that longer labels take a long time to upload from the app as the file is rasterized. If you try to write a really long label, it can feel like the app has crashed.
What Can The Selpic S1 Print On?
We tried on a variety of surfaces, with overall great success.
Obviously, flat card and paper was easy. No issues there, and the QR code was successfully read by my phone.
On skin, we couldn’t get anything useable, just a large smudge.
On a wine glass, we managed a perfect print, despite the curved surface and optical difficulty. The quick-drying ink didn’t wash off under running water, and needed to be scrubbed off.
A bigger print on a mostly clear plastic box didn’t go as well but was still acceptable. Keeping the printer straight at this sort of angle was difficult, and some sort of optical sensor error left one of the letters skipping.
Printing inverted text on the inside of our polytunnel door was also mired by a small smudge, but still legible.
On rough but otherwise flat wood, the print was perfect. I can see gardeners making great use of this for plant labels.
One often forgets what one has planted in raised beds.
Overall, I’m really impressed with the “print anywhere” claim. Most of the printing hiccups we did experience would likely be perfected with repeated use. There’s a knack to printing well that you’ll learn.
Should You Buy the Selpic S1 (or Back the S1+)?
The Selpic S1 is the sort of gadget that you’re bound to find a use for around the home, but at around $250 for a starter pack plus $80 for additional cartridges, I expect you’ll want to know beforehand precisely what your use cases will be to justify the cost. If you find yourself writing the same message repeatedly on something that otherwise can’t be fed into a traditional printer, then this may be the perfect gadget for you.
If you’re a home user that just wants to put text labels on all the things–storage boxes, personal possessions and such–you might want to stick with traditional tape-based label printers (or a pen!). Changing the text often and uploading it to the Selpic each time gets tedious after a while. For English text anyway, the ease of typing on a physical keyboard and hitting the print button is faster. The results aren’t nearly as impressive, but those sorts of labels tend to be functional rather than attractive. The real power of the Selpic is repetitive printing and otherwise awkward surfaces.
There are also obvious benefits for small businesses and craft sellers, that need to print serial numbers, tickets, or barcodes onto packaging. It’s a handy little device.
We’d recommend backing the Kickstarter now to get early bird pricing on the S1+ model with one quick-drying cartridge for just $149 (but be quick, there’s a limited number available at that price!). As with all Kickstarters, there’s always a risk involved, but in this case we think it’s minimal. The technology works, it’s just question of whether Selpic can meet their shipping targets.

6 creative ways to use the line art trend
The line art trend is conquering the graphic design world—one line at a time. It’s simple yet clever. A “line” is one of the basic elements of design and arguably the most important. As famed Bauhaus artist Paul Klee famously stated, a drawing is simply “An active line on a walk, moving freely.” This can mean anything from a simple straight pencil line across a page to a complex and abstract pen sketch.

So what exactly is line art? All examples of line art have a few characteristics in common: clean lines and no shading, with bold lines that contrast starkly against their background. In contemporary uses, usually these designs are not highly detailed or realistic and instead rely on the viewers knowledge of the object being represented. In that way, line art is a great way to harness the popularity of minimalism while still communicating a strong message, blending both text and image into a unified whole.
How to use line art —
With minimalism and flat design still dominating the trends, line art is everywhere—sitting on top of splash photos in web design, creating memorable logos for new businesses, and combining into complex patterns used on tons of eye-catching product labels. 1. Line art logos —

The most popular arena for line art is undoubtedly logos. Brands use line art logos to feel current and on-trend. These logos work equally well in color or in black and white. Websites and apps need to deliver information and guide their users through an interface at myriad sizes and screen definitions. In order to do that most efficiently, many designers embrace icons. Now line art designs decorate pages across the web. They’re used to bring an extra pop to a splash page design or guide a user through a scrolling multi-part site with ease. They are especially strong for information organization including infographics and other areas where you need to illustrate a process in an approachable, friendly way.

Unit Evaluation
Identity
I really enjoyed creating my own personal brand identity as it tested both screen and print based design and challenged these skills.
My logo design took a long time to reach through a lot of experimentation, looking into both marks/logos as well as typesetting. Initially, I was very set on using my initials as a mark, but through listening to advice I began typesetting my name and reached a logo in Stenicletta Left font which best communicated my identity. I stuck with the name “Jess” due to it being what everybody calls me, instead of my full name Jessica. This logo usually appears in red with a white background, or with a dark blue background. My colour scheme is slightly de-saturated colours of red and blue as I think they complement each other very well. I have stuck with these colours with white through all of my designs, keeping it consistent and sensical. My font choice was DIN 2014 due to its broad range of weights and styles available. This was helpful through all of my designs, helping me pay attention to hierarchy and legibility.
Creating the website was interesting as learning the basics of Muse was something totally new. I really enjoyed website design, creating many different trials during development, and learning about widgets, slideshows and so on through Scott's sessions and YouTube tutorials. However, the biggest struggle I had with using muse was trying to adjust my content to multiple browser widths, both fixed and fluid, so that it was responsive on different devices. This was probably due to my lack of knowledge in the software, so by asking more questions and solving problems using tutorials, I was able to create simple effects and responsive content that worked OK in each browser size. In terms of my development, I started off with a very strong amount of colour and full-on design, and alike a lot of my other pieces for identity, it became minimalistic, simple and stripped back to achieve a better composition and to improve legibility. After looking at key references, this simplistic design seemed to work best, influencing me to strip back my website design by reducing number of categories, colour, image layout and alignment. Another issue I had towards the end was using Cyberduck to make my website live – I didn’t really know what I was doing and was unable to do it. This was down to time management as I could have been able to do it if I had more time to get hold of Scott, which I will try the morning of hand-in. If this doesn’t work, my Muse file will be on my memory stick and can be seen by viewing the browser.
Designing a business card was enjoyable. It started off very full of colour with random text placement, fonts and hierarchy, and during the unit I pushed it further getting back to basics and making the design simpler. Through development and creating print mock-ups, I was able to understand where mistakes were and how to improve them, aided by helpful tutorials throughout the unit. One issue that came up a couple of times in my tutorials was my use of hierarchy – it was often back-to-front on my business card and CV. This was a key change that took place on both my business card and CV designs to improve legibility, clarity and sense. I am very happy with my final business card design and I think it took the least time to conclude.
My CV design was initially distracting and too full-on due to filled coloured text boxes and large amount of badly-sized placeholder text which I showed for the critique. After writing my CV, I was able to work with an accurate set of content which developed through loads of trials. By screenshotting my work throughout this development, I was able to track and look back at changes after posting on the blog, which was very helpful for decision making when comparing designs. My final CV was simple and stripped back after looking at examples shown in the tutorial, however some details were kept to make it exciting and intriguing. These elements included thin boxes around text and the Brighton skyline at the bottom which also appeared in my website footer.
My portfolio designs progressed from a messy, crowded layout into a more professional, systematic design after looking at examples in the tutorial. I have used a mixture of good quality mock-ups and perspectives to flat imagery, ranging in scale to create an interesting set of pages. One issue I have with my final print out is probably how the text boxes do not align with imagery on their pages – instead, they align as an overall overlook by all being placed in the bottom right corner. This may be an issue but I recognise this and have submitted my mock-up prints from the last tutorial.

Overall, the identity part of the unit was good practice and has helped me think more about how I present myself and my work. Although my identity may change over time, I am happy with my current designs due to them looking interesting but staying simplistic and clear.

D&AD
I chose the Microsoft brief due to the opportunity to try new things. I wanted to challenge myself and take a risk by attempting to create a short film or animation which is an element of design that I would love to improve on. The content of the brief also seemed exciting due to the aura of magic and possibility that I would have to show. After our idea workshop with George and Mark, I picked up fun ways to get ideas down quickly on paper without worrying about the look. This method of scamping helped me to generate lots of ideas very quickly. Some key elements included re-expression, random links and ‘chucking a wild one in there’.
Many ideas were created throughout this unit and a lot of time was spent generating these ideas and looking into methods, but After re-reading the brief and picking out the key words that my idea should communicate, I decided to revisit one of my initial plans. I wanted to use magical moments and surreal scenes in film clips that suggest limitless, infinite possibilities. I found many clips that suggested this from films including Inception, Limitless and Sherlock, however I chose one clip that would become a one minute rotoscope animation: Harry Potter flying on Buckbeak from the third film.
I wanted audience to be amazed or intrigued by what they see, and to capture their attention, even if they haven’t seen the film where the selected clip is from. I thought of creating an illustration at the start of the clip which would then merge into the film to communicate how an idea can turn into reality and anything is possible. I chose this Harry Potter clip as it is a moment of exhilaration and suggests a strong sense of achievement.
This project was a challenge and full of taking risks due to my attempt at creating something I had never done before. After getting a tablet to draw with, I found the execution simple: I knew what to do, but I just didn’t have much time to do it. After spending a lot of time on Identity, I realized that I hadn’t created any of my actual one-minute (the very least it should have been) video around two weeks before it had to be finished. It’s fair to say that my time management for this project was terrible and the outcome could have been better, however I am very pleased that I was able to finish it and create something that I had never tried to do before. Hence, I have learnt a lot through making mistakes and teaching myself rotoscope methods in Photoshop and After Effects to create my final animation. I think that my final video communicated the key words in the brief, and if I was to improve it, I would have made a longer animation and created a better, more smooth blend transition using masks with more time.
Process Book
I am aware that my process book could have been designed better for example, the rag in most of my text is a bit odd, and some placements of image and text could have been thought about more. This was down to time management as I prioritized D&AD solely once Identity was nearly finished. However, I do think my process book has more of a system than my previous unit’s due to a higher understanding of hierarchy and amount of fonts used. This process book is more simple with a couple of different weights and sizes used where necessary, for example my small unit conclusions were in bold compared to the body text, page numbers were smaller and in Light, and so on. I wanted to keep my cut out cover design the same as it was quire successful in my last one, however I used coloured red and blue to reinforce my personal band identity within the unit. One thing I would change about the process book was my organization and time management - I did not work in it consistently, and again I have learnt by this mistake.

Calendar Design: Tips To Design Your Own Calendar
You see a calendar design and you like it. But did it ever cross your mind to design your own calendar?
Almost all of us thought of designing a calendar at some stage of our childhood, but the traditional roll-page month rectangles are now far behind us.
Instead, creative artists are coming up with all sorts of interesting calendar design ideas, and use those as excellent tools for marketing promotions.
The market readjusted from simple poster calendars to o-coil wire artworks, cards, magnets, and saddle stitched calendars, to name a few. In fact, custom-made calendars depend mostly on what the customer wants, and that explains the fascinating diversity.
If you have in mind sending calendars to your clients and business partners, think of it as a unique opportunity to promote your brand every day during the year. Hence, your calendar must grab attention and stand out immediately, and you must abide to a number of basic rules and indications on how to create one.
How to design a calendar that everybody will adore
Choosing a suitable theme for the calendar design
Your first task while learning how to make a calendar will be to pick an engaging theme and concept. Wrap up few creative ideas, and consult your colleagues to choose the best one. Ideally, you should go for something that will appeal to target users, but still make it obvious that it is your company that has issued the calendar.
This will mean using images, colours, graphics, and fonts that remind of your company, but used with care in order not to make the calendar too serious and corporate. Viewers will be looking at it daily, so you better go for something that will surprise them over and over until December.
Choose the number of months on a page
Common calendaring options are 1 month, 2, months, 6, or all 12 months per page. You can choose any of these, as long as the numbers on that page are readable enough. For legibility purposes, businesses mostly go for a single month per page option, so that their message will be properly conveyed, and feature a different product image on each page.
Therefore, before you design a calendar, think of the goals it should achieve.
Define the number of pages for the calendar design
Once the number of months per page is settled, decide whether you want double-side prints or not. If yes, use also environment-friendly materials, and you will communicate in such way your commitment to Green practices.
Define and ‘pack up’ your message
Themes and elements do say a lot on the message a calendar conveys, but since this one is used primarily for business purposes, you should highlight your company’s image, and pick a theme that goes along with your brand.
Choose images with care
Images matter the world to your calendar, but that doesn’t mean that you should overwhelm users with too many of them. Instead, apply the less-is-more rule, pick few high-resolution and high quality photos, and make sure they will be attractive to the end user.
Avoid everything that loos crowded, messy, or distractive, and go for elegant, generic pieces you will either make yourself, or download in high resolution.
For the purpose, of course, you’ll need the right to use the image, so it might be a good idea to consider pictures that already appear on your leaflets, brochures, and posters. In such way, you will also reinforce brand awareness, and monetize the effort you’ve invested in your calendar. The better these images look, the more the calendar will pay off in the end.
Manage your space properly
Depending on the size of the calendar you’re designing (wall, table, or pocket one), distribute content and images accordingly, and balance between pages that look too plain and too overwhelming. It is the only way to make a calendar eye-catchy, and have enough space to promote the achievements and services of your company without sacrificing actual calendar elements.
Select a functional date display
This is a good practice for those interested to make a unique calendar – the piece should be readable, attractive, and yet very practical. As it will be applied all year long, the accent is on functionality, and that should be your leading motif when working on the date display.

You will most likely be asked to choose between glossy and matte paper, and to select a binding mechanism: wire-o-coil, stapled, or saddle stitched calendar.
Keep your goals clear and achievable
It comes without saying that in the world of calendar design, great appearance is only a part of the process. Your goals should also be to make that calendar useful to the viewer, and to find a way to sneak in the promotion of your business.
This means pretty much that you need a powerful and captivating calendar that motivates people to look at it, and that inspires particular feelings for your brand and your products.

Add interest
Calendars should always be interesting, and perhaps even leave little something to the imagination of the audience. This will require a good understanding of what that audience likes and enjoys, so that each and every one of them will find a suitable place to hang that calendar.
Relevancy will help you make your calendar more interesting – if you’re selling luxurious cars to passionate care fans, depict some interesting moments, and showcase your best pieces.
Leave blank spaces in your calendar design
By useful, we don’t only mean readable, but also writable calendars. A usual business user will likely leave notes on the calendar to remember an appointment (we all do this for birthdays and important events!) so make sure he/she has enough blank space to do that.
Better yet, if you’re running an appointment-organized business, think of interesting ways to inspire people to make and add appointments with you.
Think of sustainability
In the overall number of pages, consider also the front and the back cover of the calendar. To make it cheaper, you can always opt for a double sided calendar, and print it on sustainable paper to show your customers how much you care about the environment.
Long calendars and why they’re a good idea
For starters, a long calendar won’t fold in the middle as dates and images do, as it has a plastic coil on top to secure it, and you can flip it month by month. From a user’s perspective, this means lots and lots of space to place notes.
Such calendars often come with a banner on top, then the dates, and the ending blurb in the bottom section. The upper banners can be also date calendars and photos, as long as you size them appropriately. Depending on how you’ve chosen to decide a calendar, you can fit in different styles and ideas, and ensure the calendar feels differently each month.
Little desk calendars and why they’re a good idea
Who said that good calendars should hang on a wall? Smaller, desk ones are obviously more practical, usually produced in triangle formation, and designed to enable the user to flip pages month by month thanks to the coil on top. These calendars save a lot of space in small and crowded offices, as they’re only few inches long, and still wrap up all important information.
Plus, they are easier to reach and more readable for people who don’t have the time to move around the office and check them.
On a desk calendar, you can also include the brand’s logo and contact info in the bottom section, so that each time the user flips a page, the data is clearly visible. This way, they will remember you, and very likely contact you in future.
Magnet calendars you can put on the fridge (or any metal surface)
Once you’ve completed all standard calendar forms, prepare a magnetic one people can stick on their fridges and other metal surfaces. These calendars are just perfect for office environments, restaurant, food deliverers, bars, and similar venues.
On them, you can also imprint the name and contact data of the brand, and users will find it easier than ever to contact you for your services.
Writing your own story
Plan the content first. In order to do that successfully, answer the following questions:
What’s going on with your company this year?
How can the calendar contribute to that event?
What changed in your company last year, and deserves to be made visible on the calendar?
How can you make each month stand out?
Who’s the calendar designed for?
Will the users relate easily to your story?
Working with your company’s colours
Colours matter a lot to your brand, and it is therefore essential that they will appear on the calendar is well. Some brand have done such a good job choosing a palette that it takes nothing but the colour itself to indicate that it is them who are distributing those calendars.
In other cases, the colour of the brand is the one that dominates, accompanies with the logo or slogan used in other marketing tools.
Use your original artwork
Even if we wanted, we could not discourage a designer from digging into the thousands of free, royalty stock images available on the net, as we all know this saves time and money. Still, a calendar is a one-time possibility to do something enormous for your brand, and there are so many options firms work with nowadays that a classic, mediocre calendar may simply take you off the scene.
