Short Documentary Research

Idea One - Summary 

My documentary will be about the man behind Navid from the well known Scottish sitcom, Still game. I will be interviewing Sanjeev Kohli about the success of this show and his other popular projects such as River City. We shall discus the various characters he has played and what it takes to get into these different roles. As well as what it is like to perform in front of camera compared to performing on stage which he did for the Still Game Live Show in the SSE Hydro. I am also interested in asking him about his personal journey to his career. Has he always enjoyed comedy? The target audience will be young people and people who have grown up with the show, therefore in terms of age I would say 16 and above. 

Feedback

May be hard to get Kohli on both filming days due to his busy schedule.

Could be difficult to get footage of where they film some of his shows such as River City due to the commute. 

should add his opinion on how some may perceive the content on still game as offensive and the sensitivity around this.

Practicalities

I think this is feasible as I have discussed the dates i will be filming with Kohli well in advance and although he won't know if he is filming until the week before this, he has kindly offered to do the interview after he is done filming. There will be minimum travel costs as we will need to take the train to the location however there it is only a few stops from glasgow queen street therefore, tickets won't be too costly. I believe I will be able to make this over the time span of 2 days if my crew and I come well prepared for both filming days and with a good mentality.

From the feedback I have received I have considered and compiled some questions I may ask about such as how he feels playing a character that has some racial stereo types and does he ever worry about the reactions to this.

I have analysed this short documentary as it involves a similar subject matter. It is about an actress and her experience of the industry and how it can be a risky career choice due to the uncertainty of it, in terms of a reliable income. However if it your true passion you must trust yourself and go for it. This was also filmed in 1 minute 40 seconds which allows me to believe I can film similar content in 3 minutes.

I have analysed this docuseries as it again interviews people involved in the making of the content which they discuss as well as show snippets of the content. Which is the sort of format I want to take with my short documentary. I like the way it is shot cutting between the actual film which is being discussed and the interview. Even though each episode of the docuseries is around 45 minutes I still believe I can cover the same subject area, as my work will only include one interview -not several.
