A long post wherein I recount my experience at a Limp Bizkit show and get increasingly emotional about the power of live shows and their resulting memories as a coping mechanism for deep depression.
Wednesday night was honestly the most fun I've had in several years. It was full of childlike glee and giddiness and excitement. And sweat. Lots of sweat. I knew that I'd have a blast, having already seen them back in 2012, but this time Limp Bizkit put on one of the best, engaging live shows I've ever seen. It was a big, bouncing nu-metal party and the atmosphere was electric. Everyone in attendance was there to have a good time. No fighting, no dickheads, no munted macho bullshit, just roughly 1000 people ready to party like it's still 1999.
The opening act was HANABIE., an all-female Japanese "metalcore" band, but calling them metalcore feels reductive because they incorporate so many different elements into their sound (electronica/hip-hop/punk/nu-metal as well as Harajuku culture). I really want to gush about them but I'd just end up regurgitating the entire wikipedia article. Their energy was so contagious and the crowd was equally keen and receptive. There was even a circle pit during We Love Sweets which I couldn't help but join. I got a gentle accidental elbow in the face, and slipped on some empty drink cans but got picked up immediately. In a matter of thirty minutes I was already drenched and forming my first bruises.
As for Limp Bizkit, I've been writing and deleting and re-writing and re-deleting this paragraph since Thursday morning. I can't find the words. From a distance, watching myself get all emotional about this band in particular is actually hilarious. My thoughts are so muddled but I've realised that I've been so touched by this concert because they made me feel like a kid again. I've been lucky enough to see some of my other all-time favourite bands live - highly regarded and renowned performers, but I wasn't listening to Nine Inch Nails or The Fall or Radiohead when I was eight years old, so they can't evoke the same emotions.
I fangirled and flapped when Wes came on stage and as soon as they opened with My Generation, I was overcome with such a powerful, innocent euphoria that kept me jumping and screaming all night long. I'm struggling to describe it because I didn't think I was capable of feeling that sort of natural high ever again - I thought I had destroyed my capacity for pure pleasure through drug use in my 20s. Yet here I was, utterly jubilant and energetic, one row back from the barrier directly in front of possibly my favourite guitarist of all time. Fred chatted a lot with the crowd (I uncharacteristically gushed and giggled like a school girl when he was talking to us down the front), and a surprising amount of mens underwear got thrown on stage. They did a fun transition from Rollin' into Raw Hide, covered Killing In The Name, did a big sing-along of Careless Whisper, and even played Re-Arranged which was a nice surprise. I would have loved for them to play Out Of Style, but I understand people want to hear the old stuff. The atmosphere was non-stop fun from the opening note until the end of Don't You Forget About Me which they play as they leave the stage.
I had been hoping to have some sort of acknowledgement or interaction with Wes, like catching one of the roses that he throws into the audience. Given that I was at the front, I took a shot during a quiet moment between songs and yelled out "Hey Wes, wish Alie [his fiancee] a late happy birthday from me!" and he walked straight over to me and threw me his pick! Achievement unlocked! I reacted like a QTE and almost burst into tears when I realised I caught it. Almost. I didn't want to fuck up my fancy makeup and contact lenses. As my partner pointed out, most of the roses had been torn to shreds by the end of the show, but I got a personalised treasure to hold on to. I've kept it close to me ever since (and played my own guitars with it, naturally). It's like he gave me a little talisman of hope and happiness and I really need something like that right now. December is always a hard time of year for me. On top of that, I've been feeling so incredibly bleak about the future and sometimes find myself making certain plans in the back of my mind. But this silly little bit of plastic with a picture of Lisa Vanderpump with a beer bong labelled Borland/Wes' Baphomet logo on it makes me feel like I can keep going. Like I want to keep going in spite of my fear and my pain. I almost feel a tongue-in-cheek sense of resentment, like, "how dare one of my favourite musicians inspire some sense of hope in me during such a tough time?"
Someone filmed the entire show and I am eternally grateful to them. I can giggle at my own distinctive cheering early in the set. I can watch Fred's playful shenanigans with the front row. I can see my interaction with Wes. I can remember. There are times when it feels like the last ounce of hope has left your body, and it causes you to forget. You no longer feel capable of caring, so you simply forget how much you love music and comedy and every other little thing that makes life worth living. That's why I have a big folder sleeve filled with physical memories that I can turn to, full of ticket stubs and entry wristbands and the like so I have something tangible to tie back to my experiences. I've got some drumsticks and a NIN setlist as well. Having the means of reliving those moments is an invaluable tool when fighting major depressive episodes. I will sit there and carefully examine each piece and something will stir inside of me. It could be the faintest echo of a feeling, but it will come, and it will remind me that life is worth fighting for.

”A Monster’s Threads” QnA please!!! (I know I’m late lol sorryyy)
Were there any films, songs, or other fics that particularly inspired you when developing the story?
If you added more chapters, where would they go and what would they cover?
Did you plan out the whole story or did you come up with it as you went?
Who was the easiest character to write? Who was the hardest?
Did you ever get emotional or cry when writing certain scenes?
Did you pull any punches with the heavier content? Where? When?
What was your fav scene to write in the whole fic?
How did your perspective grow/shift on certain characters after writing them?
If you could choose one scene to be fully illustrated, which one would it be?
Hhhhh yesss thank you! AMT is my first fic, though I was not nearly in the know as I am now. So let's see...
In terms of inspirations, it's weird. I remember reading a pretty accurate novelization of the Nibelheim Incident and feeling inspired to write my own version. There've also been plenty of Seph backstory fics out there as well and while I initially took inspiration from a few, I very quickly branched out from there. Novel inspirations included Gregory Maguire's Wicked, though only in design and not in practice or flow. I also listened to a LOT of Glass Animals for the Sephgen chapters.
My biggest regret is not having more Gast-Seph chapters. I'm still beating myself up over it. I maybe would have liked to have fleshed out a few more chapters with Seph in Wutai, and possibly integrating his scenes from Before Crisis as well, especially his encounter with Elfe. Her asking him why he fights I feel is an often overlooked but pivotal character moment for him. I also probably would have rewritten a lot of the Aerith chapters as well, with more of a focus on Ifalna.
AMT was originally going to be "snippets", hence the shortage of Gast chapters. It was going to jump through huge chunks of time with a focus on important canon moments. By chapter 7ish I started to get more ambitious.
Easiest character to write is Hojo. Or Jenova. Not that Jenova is an actual "character", but writing more animalistic horror characters is a lot easier than characters who go through an arc. Hojo is easy because he's a dick, and already knows the whole score. He knows exactly what he wants and what he expects. Less guessing work.
In terms of emotion, there were a few instances. Seph, Gen, and Angeal sharing pasta together. Angeal's farewell. And especially the ending. I'd been waiting for the ending for a long, long time.
There was lots of stuff that was eventually cut or shortened. Sephiroth was originally going to wear a shock collar most of his childhood. Angeal's body was going to take a bad tumble off the gurney and/or coffin while Seph and Zack had an argument over it. Hojo was going to be a lot creepier with some...unsettling implications. It was all too much. So I didn't go there.
Favorite scene was the penultimate confrontation between Sephiroth and Zack in Nibelheim. I just wanted to write Seph going apeshit insane. I was practically losing my mind during the buildup. It was the easiest chapter to write because I was blazing through on pure malicious glee.
I put some Sephzack in there, or at least hints of it. Probably wouldn't have leaned into that as much since I'm more staunchly into Sephgen. I know a lot more about certain points of lore now than I did at the time of writing it, though I did a lot of research. There's some things that are kind of screwy timeline-wise. I think I now view certain characters with a bit more sympathy now. Genesis, for example, while I liked him at the time of writing it, occasionally comes off as a genuine asshole. I might have softened him up a bit, though I did try to be really fair to him in the fic. At least, I hope I did.
HHHH illustrations. The waterfall scene was illustrated thanks to a lovely commission by @manalovebot. And that was one of the big ones for me. So if I really had to think about it...perhaps the end of part 2 with Seph on the roof. Or Lucrecia seeing baby Seph at the beginning of part 3. Or maybe even Sephiroth fighting Zack in Nibelheim. I'm really not kidding when I say that if I had any artistic abilities, I'd have every chapter illustrated.

hq boys slow dancing with their pregnant s/o
Tumblr media
feat. ( timeskip ! )kita shinsuke + daichi sawamura + sugawara koushi + kurō tetsuro
notes ; happy valentine’s day for some and valentines eve for others ! lots of love from me <3
Tumblr media
+KITA prepared the stir-fry with anticipation, dicing up ingredients on the go like a pro ( no surprises there ). of course, he insisted that you sit watching that show you’ve been loving lately, but your stubbornness led to his helping you to measure. “absolutely no cutting.” he narrowed his eyes, knowing full well how that would go without his sternness for aid. “but shin, it’s so boring only measuring !” you whined, practically flopping on the counter with despair. suddenly, the radio station began playing ‘love’ by frank sinatra, kita’s lips pulling up to a small smile of mischief. “if we dance will it be boring ?” he slid across the tile, grasping your hands with his to sway, you didn’t reply as he kissed you, lips tainted with the taste of strawberry chapstick he’d moisturized with earlier. sweet.
+DAICHI pulled off his hat, gawking at you and your swollen belly and the utensils in hand. “what’re you doing ?” he murmured, wrapping those big arms around your waist with a pouty face. “heating up left-overs.” you rolled your eyes, watching with amusement as an imaginary lightbulb popped at the top of his head, scurrying to his phone. you didn’t even inquire, too focused on the heavenly essence circling in the microwave just waiting to be gobbled up. “here we go.” he scooped you up, laughing at your shocked expression. “hey ! i need my food.” you groaned, beating as his chest. “shhhh .. listen.” nonetheless, you managed to fall prey to his happy face, so relieved to be home with you, ‘thinking out loud’ playing softly in the background adding to this moment. “this is what i look forward too most when i come home.” he sang along, he does everytime.
+SUGAWARA clicked his tongue, observing how delicate ballet dancers were on point, it always amazed him. he’d been preparing books for his daughter-to-be, those books including some he’d researched on, and read to his students as well. so diligent. “baby, do you think i could stay on point like that ?” you snorted, but covered up the bruising reaction with a grin. “maybe, try it out.” you nearly rolled over as the teacher hardly managed to keep balance walking regularly. “no no it’s like this.” you tried explaining, to no avail. “i can dance though.” the now sweaty post-setter stated with an arrogant tone. “oh really ? i’d love to see that.” you chuckled lowly, not expecting his hand to reach out to you. now clumsily stepping around the living room, highly inexperienced. “what’re we dancing to anyways ?” — “dunno, it sure is fun though.” — “mhm, sure.”
+KURŌ had his face stuffed in a ‘recipes for a healthy mom-to-be!’ type magazine, reading each word like a precious document that would determine life or death. it was adorable to say the least, he was very very concerned for your health and well-being throughout this pregnancy ( and the little one growing inside of you as well ). “we should try this.” he pointed to a ravioli looking guide, you humming with approval. “we should.” that leading to a grocery store run, and now frivolous screaming to the songs blasting on your google home. romantic, slow songs, randomly began playing, earning a bewildered look from the business owner. “how did it change so fast ?” you belting out laughter at just how flustered he’d become. “let’s dance kurō ! this baby’s gonna have my moves.” — “dear god i hope not.” — “shush.” sticking out your tongue, you were then met with an embrace. “what’re you doin’ ?” he shrugged. “you’re warm kitten.” nearly purring with glee. so. so happy.

Phasmophobia
Leviathan x GN!Reader
You suggested you play your favorite horror game together, and the next thing you know, you and Levi are trapped in a closet, bodies pressed too closely together for nothing to happen.
//Yo so this has heavy references to the game Phasmophobia, but you don’t need to know anything about it to read this. Also its a bit longer than some of my others so I guess you could say its a bit of a slow burn? lol
“Hey, want to do the campsite, or Tanglewood next?”
He hummed in thought, before shrugging. “It’s getting late, I’ll do a Tanglewood if you set it to nightmare.”
Leviathan smiled fondly as you nodded and set the settings. He didn’t think he’d enjoy this particular game as much as he did, since it was from the human world and all. But honestly, when hooking it up to his new, limited edition, total immersion 4D virtual reality console, he had the feeling it was going to be totally worth his while. It may have only been the first session he’d played with just you, but he had a good feeling that things were going his way, especially since you were clearly knowledgeable enough to play seriously.
“You’ve not played nightmare yet, have you? It’s the hardest difficulty, and there’s a lot of differences.” You said, but he just waved you off as he messed with the equipment in the lobby.
“Are you taking me for a normie? I’ll be fine, this game isn’t even that scary!”
No sooner had he said that, he realized the both of you were loading into the truck. You were already collecting your equipment, humming to yourself a song that you both had sung at karaoke a while back. Levi nodded in satisfaction, before turning to look at the board. “Uh, what’s wrong with the monitors?”
“Oh, didn’t I tell you? No sanity and no activity tracking. We’re going in blind. Hey, I’m taking EMF and a book.”
Levi chuckled nervously, flicking on his flashlight as he listened to the programmed radio talk about a supposed cursed object. They hadn’t run into one in their entire night of gaming, but suddenly he got a terrible feeling about what was to come. “Oh, I see… Ill take in a UV and a camera, then.”
But by that point, you were already gone, rushing to the front door with key in hand. Levi sighed, pouting that you’d left him behind again, but still, he felt like he couldn’t complain. After all, you’d set this whole night aside for him and him alone! Just the two of you! Gaming until dawn! He supposed he couldn’t be too upset over your eagerness and quickly followed you into the dark, cold and abandoned house.
The moment he stepped into the house; the ambiance kicked in. The soft noise of the rain pattered on the ceiling above him, and his breath came out in short puffs. Everything echoed, and the shadows were long and reaching from the dim light of his flashlight. He could hear you rummaging around in the kitchen, and quietly decided to investigate. His footsteps were loud, plodding heavily on the carpet as he wandered into the room.
He shone the light around slowly, expecting to see you near the counter where the noise came from, but you weren’t there. He blinked, his brow furrowing as he fully stepped into the room, scanning the shadows for you. “Hey, where are you? You’re not going to jump out at me – “
“Breaker’s on!” You suddenly shout from the basement with glee, your light footsteps racing up the stairs to join Levi by his side and shone your flashlight directly in his face. “What were you saying?”
“I was just about to ask – “Levi started, when suddenly he was cut off by the shrill beep of the EMF in your hand, and a cup crashing into the wall next to the two of you. Shrapnel from the ceramic scattered around your feet, causing you to yelp and turn into Levi’s side, hiding your face in his jacket. Levi’s blush was dark and immediate, and he suddenly shoved you away with one hand covering his mouth as he spoke. “What the heck? I-I need some personal space!”
“Ah, sorry, that just startled me.” You murmured softly, looking a little sheepish. “But I think we found the ghost room!”
Levi sighed and nodded, suddenly grinning as he looked around. He tried desperately not to think about the way your arms so naturally wrapped around his waist or the lingering scent of your cologne as you stepped a little farther back to toss the EMF on the counter near where the cup once was. “Yeah, we did! Dumb ghost was ready for us!”
As soon as he said that, the EMF went off yet again, and two forks came flying at them from the sink to stab the wall just by his forehead, a small bit of his navy hair caught in the prongs.
You laugh, gently reaching up to brush the hair free from its weak imprisonment. The back of your hand brushed against his cheek ever so slightly as you moved, dropping the forks to the floor with a loud clatter as you did so. “Try not to piss it off too much? I’d rather you be in one piece.”
“Uh, right.” Levi murmured softly, frozen for a moment as you backed up slightly.
“Well, I’m going to go find the bone, and there was a Ouija board in the basement, so Ill leave you here to do some more looking!” You said and suddenly were off like a rocket, taking the camera from his hands and leaving him alone, dumbfounded.
Levi cleared his throat and nodded, even though you weren’t there to see it. He was totally overthinking this, definitely. You didn’t mean to brush his cheek so tenderly; you were just getting him free after he antagonized the ghost. You just didn’t want to play alone, that’s all. Why would you want to touch a yucky, gross, dumb otaku like him?
Before he could linger on that thought for too much longer, the door leading to the garage burst open behind him, the sound echoing off the too quiet walls like a gunshot. Levi whirled around, UV in hand, aiming the weak, purple light at the door. The shadows were dark and looming, and even with his excellent eyesight he couldn’t see far. With a thick swallow, he crept closer to the door, doing everything he could to keep his footsteps quiet in case the ghost could somehow hear him. He frowned after a moment, scanning one side, then the other, looking up and down for anything out of the ordinary. He’d seen the fingerprints evidence on another map, but wasn’t seeing it here, and the constant puffing of his breath wasn’t helping either.
“Wait…” He whispered, and blew into the air, the exhale visible to the eye as a chill suddenly raced up his spine, causing goosebumps under his clothes. He suddenly felt as though he was being watched, as if there were eyes on the back of his head, and the cold leeched down to his fingers and toes, making him feel woefully underdressed. With a shake to his hand, he brought the radio up to his face. “Hey, we have freezing!”
“Hell yeah! I’m coming in with a camera and a spirit box.” You called back, and he was left in the dark silence once again. With his back against the wall, the quiet was overwhelming, the darkness enclosing slowly, as if it were meant to swallow him whole. He swallowed thickly, the hair on the back of his neck standing upright as he swore, he heard a soft gurgle come from somewhere to his left, but he dared not look. The sound got louder, and louder, forcing him to close his eyes tightly, hoping that it was just his imagination and not a real ghost coming for him.
“I’m here!” You suddenly called and tossed the tripod to the ground. “Hey, you wanna check for ghost orbs? I’m going to try the box over in this corner!”
Your voice was like a flash of light in the darkness for Levi. He nodded slightly, picking up the tripod with trembling hands. “This is a little scarier than the other difficulties, don’t you think…?” He asked softly, trying to keep his smile steady despite the obvious tremble in his voice. You were here, it was going to be fine. Even though he was sure you just saw him as a best friend, there was nothing wrong with using you as an anchor, just this once, right?
“Of course, that’s why it’s called nightmare!” You laughed, and flicked on the spirit box to fill the room with endless static. “Now, hush. I’m going to try speaking to it.”
Levi sighed. Of course. You were just a gaming buddy to him. Why did he ever thing for a second that you might need him as much as he needed you right now? He let his mind run in circles, absently looking around the room with the video camera, searching for orbs as the constant drone of questions spilled from your mouth nearby.
“Are you here? Are you close? Are you friendly? Are you French? How old are you? Are you young? Where are you?”
“I’m behind you.”
The voice was low, growling and coarse. It filled the room with an unnatural presence, despite emanating from the box in your hand. You yelped loudly and dropped it, and the moment the box it the floor it let out a loud, high-pitched screech, and the room was alight with dark red.
Every bulb was strobing frantically with a dark, blood red light, and Levi’s flashlight started flashing erratically in his hand. Between the two of you, stood a tall, deformed figure. Its body reeked of decay and death, shoulders slumped from rotting tendons and muscles, and its white, soulless eyes almost glowing in the frantic light of the groom. The gurgles returned, the spirit moaning from beyond the grave, its eyes locked on Levi as you trembled in fear behind it. Both of your gazes were locked on the long, curved blade in its hand, dripping with a dark liquid Levi feared was blood. As soon as it started, it stopped, with the sudden bursting of every bulb in the room, leaving the EMF wailing between you and the room stuck in total darkness.
“I think we should get out. Regroup in the truck.”
Levi nodded weakly and took a tentative step from the wall. “Agreed.”
You carefully took the lead, quietly walking through the house ahead of Levi. He trailed behind quietly, chewing on his lip to hide his whimpers. He could see you were trembling too, the flashlight shaking slightly in your hand, and despite the silence of your gate you were clearly rushing to the door. No matter how far you seemed to rush, the front door felt much too far away. But Levi sighed softly, as soon as you both were out, he could forget the way he wanted to rush to your side when the ghost appeared, forget how vulnerable you looked up to him and forget how much he wanted to hold you close but knew you wouldn’t want anything like that.
Right as the two of you began to cross the threshold, the door abruptly slammed in your face, the sound of the lock deafening in the hallway as the EMF in the other room began screaming again. The flashlight in Levi’s hand started to flicker, and as he looked up at your expression, he knew things had gotten much worse. The ghost’s heavy footsteps echoed in the hall behind him, the heartbeats loud in his ears as it set its sights on hunting him first, and you second.
You were frozen in your tracks behind him. Levi knew you wanted to run for the hiding spots, but the shock of the ghost event had sucked the bravery out of you. So, without a second thought, Levi grabbed your wrist tightly, and rushed towards the closest bedroom. His grip was tight, firm but gentle as he hurriedly flung you into the closet first, and himself second, slamming the doors shut to break line of sight with the ghost. He knew he got lucky, this closet wasn’t always open, but this time there was just barely enough room for the two of you to fit.
He looked over at you, face full of concern and fear, breaths escaping in frantic pants. His eyes almost glowed in the darkness, but suddenly you reached over and flicked off his flashlight, turning yours off too, leaving you both in total darkness. As Levi’s eyes adjusted to the light, he could also see that you were fearful and panting, your entire body trembling from the shock. Even though it was just a game, every scare was enhanced tenfold from the 4D VR system. Levi carefully reached out to put a comforting hand on your shoulder, when suddenly you were in his arms again, hugging him close and burying your face in his shirt.
Levi carefully tilted your head up, meeting your gaze with a nervous glare and a bright blush. Thankfully, he was certain you couldn’t see it in the low light. He was just about to whisper comforts in your ear, when suddenly the footsteps began again, stomping heavily through the bedroom. It walked a few steps and stopped, before the stomping became louder, and louder, and only in the last second did Levi realize it was making a beeline for the closet doors. He looked down at you, and a soft whimper started to escape, and in a moment of impulse he crashed his lips against yours to silence your fearful cry.
Your lips were so soft against his, he realized after a moment. He’d done this only to stop the ghost from finding your hiding spot from your voice, but even that excuse was quickly fading from his mind as he focused intensely on your lips and how after a moment you pushed back, returning the gesture as your hands went from clutching his shirt to slowly moving up his back. All Levi could focus on was the slightly sweet taste on your lips, maybe it was from the soda you’d had while he was setting everything up. He tried to keep his focus on the warmth radiating from where your bodies were touching, how your hands pulled him closer and how the trembling from both of you stopped.
The footsteps stopped, pausing just outside of the closet doors, and for a few, long and tense moments, all was quiet before the heavy plodding continued on, quietly fading as the ghost moved into the rest of the house.
You broke the kiss first, panting softly as you licked your lips to savor the warmth of Levi’s for a moment longer. He was looking down at you, dazed and flushed, his own breaths mingling with yours. You could only stare at him for a few moments, before he blushed and pulled away, and you did the same.
“I… Uh, I think the hunt is over.” Levi murmured after a moment. “We should go, you know…”
“Back to the truck? Yeah.” You echoed and quietly peered outside the closet and into the dark house. Neither of you wasted any time in escaping this time, and only when you were back inside the safe zone of the truck did you relax.
The whole run there, Levi was quietly berating himself for what he’d done. How could he? You clearly didn’t want to be with him, so why did he kiss you like that? He was gross and stupid, and you were so perfect, and fragile, and in that moment, you tasted so good, and…! No, stop, he told himself quickly. He didn’t need a 3D partner, he was fine, he was…
Suddenly the train of thought crashed and burned when you leaned over, kissing his cheek chastely with a small smile. “Thanks. For saving me back there. We’ll have to do that again.
“Huh?” Levi could only stare at you dumbly. “You want to get hunted again?”
“No, but being locked in a closet with you was pretty nice.” You laughed, and reached around him to press the keypad on the truck that would send you back to the lobby, your hand brushing his side and the last thing he saw before it was replaced with a loading screen was your playful yet flirtatious smirk.

But Baby Bird
Cheating!Hawks x Reader
Warning - Cheating! Toxic ass behavior.
Summary - You catch Hawks cheating on you - and you decide to take him down a peg
Apparently cheating Hawks is a trend right now? And like I’m down... But in my way. Also listen to the glee version of Bust your windows and it 100% fueled this.
Tumblr media
Today was a normal day for you. You got off at work, went to pick up something for dinner, and headed home for the night. Work had been stressful. All the heroes at your agency seemed to need a hundred things. And running the behind the scenes of the agency was already hard enough. So you were longing to be home. In the arms of your fiancé. He’s always great with helping you recover from a bad day.
As you walk into the penthouse you notice a distinct lack of Hawks. Normally he greats you at the door- a drink and hand and a sweet kiss. However he was no where to be found. You don’t think too much on it. You’ve been at the office extra late the last couple weeks and with his hero work you know it brings natural conflicts in your schedules. However the pros boots at the door reveal he’s here. Still he could be asleep. He is one for laying around in his free time.
“Hawks baby?” You call “I’ve got us dinner.”
He doesn’t reply. You roll your eyes setting down the takeout bag on the kitchen counter. Starting to set it up. Knowing he’d be grateful to wake up to the meal. You move to grab some paper towels only to catch site of two wineglasses in the sink.
“The fact he can’t just reuse a dish-” You groan lightly.
“Baby bird-” You hear a distant groan. You move looking down the hall to the bedroom. “Oh Baby Bird.”
“He couldn’t fucking wait for me,” You growl, “what a tool.” You move marching towards the bedroom. Clearly annoyed that your boyfriend started with out you. ”Hawks I’m sure I’m better than your hand-”
The scene in front of you isn’t that of catching your partner jerking it off... No instead it’s Hawks balls deep in on of the interns from his agency.
“No fucking way,” You say harshly. Hawk looks over at you. Eyes wide. Guilt filling his expression.
“Love Bird-” Hawks start pulling away from the girl. The intern moving to grab the blankets from your bed to cover herself. Hawks standing and pulling his boxers from the ground as you stared at the scene.
The emotions flooding over you weren’t deafening. The anger. The sadness. The helplessness. The shock. All blending into an overwhelming mess. You just walked in on your fiancé fucking his intern. The man everyone warned you about proving their point.
For a moment you don’t do anything. Then you just start to laugh.
“This isn’t- let me jus explain.”
“Explain what?” You ask him laughing lightly, “that you’re fucking some bimbo from your office?”
“Y/n-”
“Fuck off Keigo,” You say harshly, “I’m done. I hope you and your little slut over there have fun...”
“Babe-”
You pull away harshly.
“Don’t fucking touch me,” You spit back.
You left. Wanting to be anywhere but there. So you ended up over at Rumi’s. Your friend giving you the usual break up kit. The pajama, ice cream. The whole nine yards. She tried to cheer you up as you sobbed. You wanted to understand why the hell he’d do that. Why he’d risk your relationship of 4 years all for a girl who’s barely legal. You wonder how long he’s been letting this happen? If she’s the only girl?
“Fuck Keigo,” Rumi says harshly.
“I tried that- didn’t work out so well in the end,” You say slightly amused. She laughs lightly.
“That’s the spirit babe,” She says, “he sucks- but he’s a learning exprience. Now you can go find a guy who treats you right-”
“Or I can burn his apartment down,” You say harshly.
“That’s an option,” She says, “I’m sure you’re dad will love that one. Mr. Hero Commission watching his sweet daughter burn her fiancé’s house to the ground.”
“You think he’d let that get out?” You ask her slightly amused, “man would have that covered up in a heart beat.”
“Well as much as I love the arson- let’s think smaller,” Rumi says, “like moving on... Show him what he lost.... And he lost the hottest bitch he’ll ever see.” You chuckle through the light tears. Moving to wipe them away. “Now no tears- pretty bitches down cry over fuck boys.” I laugh lightly. “Step one to cheering up is get under some hot guy- how’s Zawa sounding?”
“As much as I’d love to tread that wave of daddy issues- I can’t even think about that right now,” You say sadly, “Hawks and I were supposed to get married! I spent our entire relationship defending him from people telling me it would end up this way. I feel stupid.”
“That’s not your fault,” Rumi says, “you love him... Besides you aren’t the only girl who’s ever gotten hurt this way... Heroes fucking suck. Whores... All of them. They’ll stick it in anything that has a pulse- and even that’s not stopping them sometimes.”
“Ew,” You chuckle sadly. She starts to laugh.
“Bird man sucks- and you deserve so much more,” She tells you, “I promise you that this will only bring you closer to the guy who’s gonna treat you right.”
“Thanks Rumi,” You tell her. She moves pulling you into a hug.
“Any time song bird,” She says. When she pulls back she gives you a firm look. “Now go to bed- we’ve got moving out to do tomorrow.”
“Fine,” You tell her.
You try to head to sleep. You really do. But you barely get a wink when the sun starts shining through the large windows in Rumi’s living room. Outside you can hear birds chirping. The sound fills you to your core with anger. Stupid birds... Stupid Hawks. You toss a shoe at the window. The birds immediately flee.
“I know the man with wings fuck you over but don’t take it out on the birds,” Rumi says chuckling lightly. You look back to see her in the kitchen. She’s in her hero costume. Her bunny ears standing tall. “Morning song bird.”
“Ew” You groan, “I don’t want to hear that nickname ever again.”
“Oh come on I called you that before he who shall not be named ever did,” Rumi says, “your mother gave you that nickname. Don’t let him ruin it.”
“Too late,” You say as you stand from the couch. Moving over to grab a cup of coffee. Rumi rolls her eyes lightly at your comment. “I’m going to get my stuff- you still gonna be able to do that?”
“Sorry Y/n I got called in for patrols if you wanna wait here-”
“No I’m gonna go get a head start,” You tell her, “It’ll go faster that way anyways. You got any boxes?”
“No but Aizawa does- and he’s meeting us at yours to help move your stuff,” She says, “I’m giving you another chance to fuck him.” You roll your eyes roughly. “Come on! He’s hot- and before Hawks you would of killed to get under that man.”
“There was a lot I’d do pre hawks - but a lot of thats changed,” You tell her, “so I guess I’ll meet you there?”
She heads out for work. And you go through the basics of getting ready. You had called your boss to tell them you needed the day for a family emergency. This was kinda a emergency. Honestly you just couldn’t handle needing to run around for everyone else after all of that.
The penthouse isn’t too far from Rumi’s house. It’s a ten minute taxi ride. You stand out in front of the door for a minute. Anger slowly filling you as your mind replays the events of last night. You shove it away and finally open the door. The light of the morning reveals what you didn’t notice last night. Napkins with lipstick on the table. A few spare feathers on the couch. Small signs of the build up. You scoff loudly. Marching back to your room. You’re thankful that the intern isn’t there. Even more thankful Hawks isn’t. You start in the closet first. Grabbing your clothes in armfuls and tossing them onto the floor of the bedroom. Next you move to the dresser. Pulling the drawers out to dump your belongings out. You can hear the soft moans fill your ears on repeat. Keigo calling her baby bird. Something he’s called you a million times. You growl lightly. Trying to focus on getting your things. As your grabbing the picture of you and your late mother you notice a picture of you and Keigo the night he proposed. You were so happy. He promised it would be you two for the rest of you life. You move grabbing the frame. You don’t even know why. But it doesn’t stay in your hands long. In a split second your slamming it against the wall. Then you move tossing the other ones of you and Keigo on the floor. Glass is everywhere. You don’t care. You rip the frames off the wall letting them smash as well.
You calm down a bit. Moving to the bathroom to grab your stuff. However you catch yourself in the reflection. Smirking lightly as you catch the tube of lipstick on the counter. You uncap it and lean forward. Writing the word ‘Cheater’ across the glass in large red letters. Satisfied you toss the lipstick in your makeup bag then grab it to move it with the rest of your stuff. Next you move into the office. More pictures in frames around the room. You pull the down tossing them at the wall. Not caring about the scattering glass or the memories your destroying. You grab one of the markers from your desk to keep up with the redecoration. Scribbling ‘Whore’ ‘Player’ and other insults across the wall. You don’t care about what your doing. All you care about is the inconvence he’ll have cleaning this all up.
You move dragging the marker along the walls as you head out to the kitchen. Opening the shelves to toss plates and bowls on the ground.
“What the hell are you doing?”
You turn to see Keigo. He seems to be just walking in. He’s got his costume on. You smirk lightly as you drop a stack of plates on the ground. “Oops.”
“Y/n what the hell?!”
“You don’t like the redecoration? That’s a shame,” You say.
“Are you still mad?”
You don’t answer. Instead you let the teapot you toss at his head answer for you. He barely ducks it.
“Listen what happened-”
You move throwing a mug at him. He steps out of the way and it smacks the floor behind him.
“It was an accident.”
“You accidentally fucked her?” You ask harshly, “oh that’s the dumbest excuse I’ve ever fucking heard.”
“I meant it was a mistake- I messed up.”
“Oh shut the fuck up Keigo,” You growl, “I don’t wanna hear it.”
“We need to talk about this- like adults not throw a tantrum!”
You angrily toss the toaster at him. He smacks it away from him.
“You’re acting like a child!”
“You cheated on me!” You shout, “don’t give me that acting like a child shit.”
“I’m trying to talk to you and you’re throwing shit- so yeah you’re acting like a child,” He shouts back.
“Fine Keigo - what’s you’re excuse?” You ask him, “what lead you to this mistake?”
“You’re never around and I felt so alone-”
You don’t let him finish. You’re tossing the silverware drawer at him.
“You’re blaming you fucking your intern on me!” You scream, “oh my fucking god! You’re a joke.”
“Let me explain-”
“I- don’t- want- to - hear - it!” You scream in between tossing wine glasses at him. You’ve made a terrible mess of your kitchen. You couldn’t care less though. All you can think about is Keigo standing in front of you trying to blame him cheating all on you.
“Stop throwing shit!”
“Keep your dick in your pants!” You scream back.
“Did this little tantrum make you feel better?”
“No!” You scream, “you broke my heart Keigo! You cheated on me! I can’t believe you don’t understand why I’m so upset-”
“I’m trying to explain-”
“You’re trying to blame me!”
“Just let me talk!”
“No!” I scream, “I don’t care! I don’t want to hear your stupid reason!”
“Baby bird I love you-”
“HOW DARE YOU CALM ME WHAT YOU CALLED HER!” I scream on the top of my lungs. Anger radiating off of me. “You stupid- fucking- asshole!” More of the kitchenware goes flying. He’s dodging them. Mumbling explanations. You stop. Laughing lightly. He watches you clearly confused. You grab the lamp from the table and toss it straight into the middle of the TV.
“Babe oh my god!”
“Shut the fuck up! I’m done! I’m done letting you walk all over me! Defending you when you clearly don’t deserve it! And I’m done trying to love you when you clearly don’t love me!”
You yank the ring off your finger and toss it at him.
“We’re done.” I say firmly. He looks at me. Tears starting to well in his eyes. Suddenly the anger fades. You just felt numb. Over it all.
“Hey Y/n- Oh my god.”
You see Rumi and Shota at the door. Looking over the disaster of an apartment. Concern covering their faces.
“Are you okay?” Shota asks, “did he hurt you?”
You chuckle lightly.
“You think he did this?” You ask him, “I’m fine- Let’s get my shit and go... I don’t want to be here for another second.” You move past Hawks over to your friends.
“But Baby Bird,” Hawks says lightly. You look back to the man.
“Maybe next time you’ll think before you cheat-” You tell him, “see ya Bird Man.”

Seasons Change (d.s.) - ONE
↳  A/N This one already holds a special place in my heart and it has barely even begun! Might be a bit slower on updates because I want to make sure it’s perfect for us all. Thank you to @stuffofseaveyy for your unwavering help with plotting this storyline out, @randomlimelightxxx for your excitement and help, and of course, @jonahlovescoffee for being my hype girl and the best mayor’s wife anyone could ask for ;)
↳ Summary: Everyone knows everything about everyone in this small rural town in east Connecticut and the handsome single father who owns the farm down the main street seems to always be the talk of the town. Balancing the care of his acreage, raising his school-age son, and coaching the local boys’ hockey team keeps Daniel busy; but his mind never strays far from the expansive and vibrant flower gardens planted outside his farmhouse.
↳ Word Count: 2520
↳ Warnings: This story touches on topics such as loss of loved ones and grief. Nothing too detailed but read at your own discretion x

If you weren’t looking, you would miss it. An hour-and-a-half drive east of Hartford, Connecticut rested a small town that barely occupied more than an intersection of space in time. On your way east towards state lines, a rectangular green sign half covered by an oak tree would welcome you to Lincoln – Population: 200. You’d leave the town before you even realized you were in it if you weren’t paying attention but maybe that’s how the locals liked it.
People moved to Lincoln to get away from the bustle of the city…it was full of those people who had ‘let’s ditch this town’ mindsets and set down roots in a section of the world where they wouldn’t be bothered. It was the type of town that lived in the lyrics of a country song: picture perfect homegrown peace where everyone knew everyone and everyone had a place. It was easy to know everyone in a town like Lincoln. Driving in from the city you would pass a white paneled church, a few small single storey houses with lengthy driveways, the red trimmed general store, a brick sided restaurant, a run down and rusted mechanic’s shop, and catch a glimpse of the small community center just past the park before being enveloped by the nothingness that middle-of-nowhere Connecticut was known for.
Not much happened in Lincoln – at least nothing that was worth noting. Sometimes a car would break down and a city dweller in a designer suit would find his way to the general store to ask for assistance or, more often, a coyote would be rumoured to be roaming at night but that was the extent of the excitement. The most exciting thing to do outside of day to day work was play hockey and it seemed to be the town’s pride and joy of a pastime. There was no such thing as ‘hockey season’ as hockey season was year round in the small town of Lincoln, Connecticut. The community center housed an ice rink that could be melted down to a basketball court but everyone stayed for the hockey. The Lincoln Lighting Junior and Senior leagues were usually the talk of the town. The school-aged boys (ages 7-13) played for the juniors and the later teens and most of the fathers played for the senior league. The captain of the senior league was the coach of the juniors and he owned one of the few farms a few paces north of the main intersection.
A father of one and the best hockey player Lincoln had ever seen, Daniel Seavey was more than one could expect from a small town man.
He wasn’t your everyday potato farmer with uneven tan lines or a body that housed more beer than muscle and, in fact, he was the talk and the eye candy of the town. At only twenty-nine, Daniel was the best of the best in Lincoln: best hockey player, best coach, best farmer, best guitarist, best father; and he had the sandy brown hair and sky blue eyes of a heartbreaker to top it all. At six feet tall, Daniel was slim and handsome, and yet had the muscles capable of running a farm and shooting slapshots like you wouldn’t believe. Daniel was quiet and polite and he innocently humoured the wives of the town as they flirted with him in front of their unimpressed husbands.
But no one could be mad at Daniel. Not when he was the first and only widow Lincoln had ever seen.
Marigold Seavey was twenty-six when she died in her bed at their farmhouse in the early hours of the morning. Her passing was the first major event to ever shake the town of Lincoln. Everyone knew everyone in this town and, that being said, everyone knew what a sunshiny soul Marigold was. Daniel, especially, seemed to have his light burnt out once she was buried behind the church at the corner of town. Some of the folks in town will tell you that the saddest sight they had ever seen was Daniel standing at the foot of his wife’s grave after the funeral with his six-year-old son holding his hand and the two of them crying silent tears into the fresh fall soil.
Despite Daniel’s quiet persona, he was strong and he knew he had to be for the sake of his young son. He couldn’t wallow in his grief for long since he had a son to raise and a farm to tend to and the generosity of the townsfolk certainly helped him to stay on his feet after his wife passed.
It had been a year-and-a-half since Marigold died. Daniel had just turned twenty-nine as March moulded into April and the winter chill was starting to fade into spring and the second birthday without her wasn’t any easier. The birthday cake baked by his neighbour wasn’t as delicious as Marigold’s classic lemon cake she would make him every year but he politely thanked the woman and dared not complain. Daniel would never complain over the niceties of the townsfolk.
That’s what came with living in such a small town; everyone had everyone’s back.
It was the first Sunday of April and the first truly nice spring day of the year. With a crisp breeze in the air, it was only just warm enough to discard the winter jackets and most of the town was gathered in the large backyard of the mayor’s house for the usual after-church brunch. On the colder Sundays, brunch was held in the main restaurant but everyone preferred to gather in the fresh air and over the crisp green grass of the mayor’s house as soon as the weather permitted.
The mayor’s house was the largest and had the most land outside of the farms that were just north of the main intersection in town. Jonah – known by the locals as such since he didn’t like the formality that came with the title of ‘Mayor Frantzich’ – and his wife Jocelyn kept a pretty house on the edge of the little town. They could be what you call the ideal small town family with two kids, a dog, and white picket fence – enough backyard space for it to be the perfect spot for weekly brunch.
The town children had space to play and stretch their legs after sitting for an hour in church and the yard was filled with the shouts from their games. The adults lingered around the yard in various little circles, nursing freshly squeezed orange juice in spring-themed clear plastic cups and talking amongst themselves.
Daniel did a lot of listening during Sunday brunches, standing amidst one of the groups of parents as they talked about school, clubs, and work. Marigold was always the chatty one of the two of them…without her, Daniel felt out of place.
“What about you, Daniel? Think the frost will be gone to break ground this week?”
Jack spoke first, a shorter man with unruly brown hair and enough tattoos to surprise anyone with the fact that he raised an apple orchard. He owned the farm beside Daniel’s and was one of his closest friends in the town.
Daniel thought for a moment and scuffed the toe of his dress shoe against the grass. The cold ground was still pretty solid and the chill in the air still had them all wearing blazers over their Sunday button-ups.
“Only if this cold front lets up.” Daniel answered. “I’m hoping to plough by next week at the latest.”
“Everything’s been going well with the farm and your boy?” Jonah asked, his hand tucked around his wife’s waist and he raised his opposite hand to his mouth to sip his juice.
Daniel shifted on his feet and gave a shrug, his eyes drifting past the group of parents to easily pick out his shaggy haired brunette son across the yard with the rest of the kids. At almost eight-years-old, Lennox was the light of Daniel’s life; his little hockey star, helping hand, and the one whom his late wife’s smile and spirit lived on in. It had been a hard year-and-a-half for the two Seavey boys but Daniel was relived that he could hear his son laugh again, his audible glee reaching to the far edges of the mayor’s property and to his father’s ears.
“It’s been…fine.” Daniel sighed, his eyes lingering on his son as he answered Jonah’s question, “Lennox has been doing well…his grades are better this year which I’m relieved about. I just…I already sold the sheep and half the chickens and the second cow last spring to try and tame some of the workload but it’s still a lot.”
“Running a farm on your own isn’t easy.” Jack said, “I know how much work it takes for two owners let alone one.”
“We’re here to help with whatever you need.” Corbyn assured him. “I can give you deals on whatever you need from the shop as often as I can.”
Corbyn owned the general store in the center of town and was the bachelor of Lincoln. It wasn’t like there were any women to date in such a small place full of cookie cutter rural families but Corbyn was very happy as he was: running the store and being the eyes and ears of the town.
Daniel shut down his generous offer politely as he looked back to his friends, “No, no. I don’t want that…thank you though. I’m just worried the garden will suffer. With so much to do with ploughing and planting and coaching…I don’t know how much time I’ll have for the flowers.” Daniel let his gaze drift back to his son playing across the grass, “Lennox is too young to tend to them himself but he loves the gardens so much so I don’t want yet another thing to disappoint him.”
“Have you thought of hiring someone?” Jonah asked.
“Like a gardener?” Daniel hummed, “I dunno.”
Corbyn sipped his drink, “Is it in the budget?”
“I think so.” Daniel shrugged, swirling his orange juice in his hand. “Never thought about it. Mari always took care of the flowers so…”
“I have a family friend who’s pretty good with gardens…I’m sure she’d be more than happy to help out.” Jocelyn offered.
Daniel chuckled under his breath, “That’s…a nice offer but I’m not looking to put anyone out of their way. They’re just flowers after all.”
But everyone knew that they weren’t just flowers to Daniel. They were Marigold’s flowers.
Jack tisked at Daniel’s hesitation, “Well if it’s in your budget to hire a gardener and you know the gardens are important to Lennox and yourself, then why not give it a try? You don’t have anything to lose.”
Jonah only added onto the argument, “She’s been wanting to come visit Lincoln for a while now. Why don’t we invite her to town and she can stay with us and you can give her a look over…if you think you want to hire her then you can.”
Daniel thought about it for a moment, taking a sip of his juice as his eyes found his son again. It was habit. Lennox was already running for him at top speed across the grass and Daniel set his cup down on the table just in time to welcome his seven-year-old’s energetic jump at him. He scooped him up with one arm and a tired grunt as he hiked him up onto his waist and Lennox held onto him around his neck, giggling as the other kids ran over after him.
“Daddy’s safe. You can’t get me.” Lennox told them matter-of-factly.
Daniel smiled proudly and linked his hands under his son’s bum to hold him up securely. At almost eight, Lennox was a bit heavy to hold but after nine years of farm work and working out for hockey, it wasn’t much of an issue for Daniel to hold him. He’d never complain regardless.
The other kids found their parents, gladly taking sips of juice or pieces of cut up fruit after a tiring chase around the yard. Jonah and Jocelyn’s seven-year-old twins found their way between them and helped themselves to the few snacks on the table. They were the closest to Lennox’s age – although a few months younger – and the boy of the set of fraternal twins was on the junior hockey team with him.
With the parents busy for a moment with their children – Jack was helping to fasten his daughter’s curly hair back in her headband – Daniel pondered the previous offer. His son rested his head against his with his small arms slung around his neck and Daniel could feel each of his gentle breaths rising and falling his chest. Everything Daniel did was for Lennox. He bit his lip.
“No rush.” Jocelyn said to him, reassuring their offer as if she could see his hesitation, “Just let us know.”
“Thank you.” Daniel said honestly.
“The Herron’s are coming over.” Corbyn whispered to the group and right away they shifted awkwardly as the family approached. Daniel let out an anticipatory sigh.
If you ever thought of jealousy, you would think of Zach Herron; father of two boys who weren’t very good at hockey and husband to a wife whose eyes liked to linger on Daniel’s biceps a little too much. Zach envied a lot of Daniel…maybe even envied him that his wife was dead. He would never admit that out loud though.
“Seavey.” Zach greeted as his family approached the group with his petite platinum blonde wife on his arm. He glanced around to the others, “And friends.”
There was a dull chorus of replies.
Zach continued, “I’m still willing to buy your horses off you. You know I have a generous price to offer.”
Daniel chuckled lightly, “Yes, I know. But the horses are not for sale and they never will be.”
“Daniel would sell his house before he sells those horses.” Jack said. The group laughed lightly at the truth behind that.
Lennox wiggled from Daniel’s arms and he set him down to join up with the two Herron boys who had just come over. The children gathered together at the other side of the table and chatted excitedly. Daniel picked up his orange juice.
“Daniel,” Zach’s wife set a hand on his bicep, her face filled with nothing but dramatic concern, “how are you holding up?”
“I’m doing fine, Katie, thank you.” Daniel replied politely.
She sighed, “It would just be a terrible shame to see your beautiful gardens go to waste; I overheard you talking about it from over there. Please let me know if I can help in any way.”
Zach’s annoyed scoff had Jack smirking into his orange juice. Corbyn and Jonah exchanged amused glances between themselves. Daniel offered Zach’s wife a small polite smile.
“That’s very nice of you to offer, but Jonah and Jocelyn already offered a family friend who’s in the business.” Daniel looked over at the couple again, with slight thankfulness in his eyes, “And I think I will gladly take them up on that recommendation.”

What do you think about Darren's career right now? Are you surprised he is not in a tv show this year? Do you think he will work with Ryan again? Do you listen to his podcast? What do you think about his new songs? I like him and follow his career since Glee, but lately I'm more happy to see short videos of him playing covers in his piano bar or at events, than to listen to his new songs. I much more prefer his songs from Listen Up tour. His podcast is sometimes interesting, but sometimes a little bit boring.
Hoo boy it is a fucking mess right now lol
I mean there's a lot going on in the world right now. He was supposed to be on Broadway for a time and that fell through. I didn't figure he had any tv shows lined up. It would be a nice thing for him to be doing, but I'm not surprised he's not doing it
Probably. I'm not gonna pretend I know what his relationship with RM is like but. Idk. I think Darren can do better, or at least do different, and I so wish he would
I don't listen to his podcast. I'm not really a podcast person period but also I kind of don't know what's going on with his and it doesn't really sound interesting? From what I've heard it sounds like a bit of a mess 😬
I do like his new songs for the most part! Those first two were wonderful. I listened to them like a hundred times each. Wasn't a big fan of the third one. Listened twice and said yeah, that's enough. But over all still greatly enjoying them!
I said something a little while ago about the piano bar situation. I think it's nice that he wants to help out his wife and her business. And obviously if that's where he wants to be then that's where he's going to be. But. He has too much talent to be sitting around playing piano in a bar 😬 Like what has he been doing for ten+ years. His career might as well be where it was pre-Glee for all he's doing with it right now
Like I do get pissed off sometimes lmao. I think his management team fucking sucks. The guy won a fucking Emmy and practically all he's done since then is a couple of commercials, and remodeled your garage? Fuck all the way off with that
It lowkey drives me crazy! (: I know there's a shit ton of stuff going on right now but fuck. I don't think Darren should be sitting around collecting dust

Jenna my beloved <3
how are you? how's everything going?
I need to know your rating of all the klaine duets (and/or sperately a ranking of Kurt's and Blaine's solos)
hope everything is going well 🧡
Hello Myle!
I've been putting off this answer until I finished my rewatch so I could see Daydream Believer in context before passing judgement. But now I have finished, and I have agonized over this ranking (I can't even imagine ranking each of their solos, that's a whole other undertaking) and here are my resulting thoughts:
16. Perfect - it's fine. I mean none of their duets are bad but this is the least compelling.
15. Story of My Life - it's also...fine. I don't understand in context why this was the song that was chosen for this scene, like even among 1D songs it's not that interesting (no shade to 1D, I enjoy many of their songs), if they wanted to impress a potential industry connection why not choose something more challenging or dynamic?
14. Love Is a Battlefield - the song itself is very fun, but nothing exceptionally impressive about the performance.
13. Daydream Believer - a good performance, nothing particularly special, but it does have some excellent Kurt-low-voice moments which I'm such a slut for
12. Somebody Loves You - really cute song, not particularly excellent but a lot of fun
11. You Make Me Feel So Young - maybe it's just the overwhelming amount of pop songs versus more classic, musical songs like this, but it makes this song stick out because it showcases their voices - individually and together - so well!
10. White Christmas - My least fave of the Christmas duets, but still has a fun vintage feel
9. American Boy - I don't know why I love this song so much but I do. Is it weird to hear Blaine try to use the same slang derived from Jamaican influence on a multicultural London sociolect as Estelle does? Yes. But it's still a fucking bop.
8. Animal - I love this song in general and also it holds a very special place in my heart as a pre-Klaine duet that made the fandom lose their minds before we discovered the context. Also just sounds good.
7. Candles - objectively a good song, a nice ballad for the boys, even if the context was a little antithetical to the lyrics
6. Let It Snow - a top-tier Christmas song. Like if I were ranking Glee Christmas songs this would probably be #2. It's jazzy, it's fun, they perform it in formalwear in their imaginary """bachelor""" chalet in the Swiss Alps. Top-notch, but it's still a Christmas song so the playability is pretty limited.
5. Just Can't Get Enough - oh my GOD this song is so catchy and adorable and I just love it
4. Got To Get You Into My Life - I'm a little biased because I have been a Beatles fan from birth, and I also feel like this was one of the few Beatles songs in the two tribute episodes that Glee actually did a really good job of covering...and also just such a fun performance
3. Baby It's Cold Outside - the OG. Words cannot describe the joy that this duet brought when I was but a 15-year-old child watching these two dumb boys make heart-eyes at each other on my television (back when we actually had cable TV, in the Olden Days). Still sounds so good, a god-tier Christmas song that you KNOW is on the playlist I break out every year in December. God your lips look delicious indeed
2. It's Too Late - I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT THIS GEM until my recent rewatch of season 6. Oh my GOD it's so good. I mean, the original song is already incredible. And then KLAINE takes a crack at it?! The way they perform it as a duet, the way that their particular lines are split up to show their relative perspectives? The MATURITY of this duet, and the ANGST, and the LONGING. I've listened to it on repeat before and I will again. This song burrows into my SOUL it's INCREDIBLE
1. Come What May- I mean. I mean. It's the ultimate fucking love song. It's yearning and devotion incarnate. It's from a fucking dream sequence. The vocals - out of this world. The emotion - unparalleled. The fandom reaction to seeing this in a time period when Klaine was broken up, but this song proved that they were soulmates/endgame/would love each other until their dying day???? - incomparable. A masterpiece of a song. Inject this shit directly into my veins.

Riding High
Tumblr media
Ch1:Jodhpurs And Jeans
Chapter Summary: After a passing comment from his well-meaning neighbour, land-lady and friend, Frank decides that before he enrols her into school Mary needs to learn some social skills and pick up a hobby to help her interact with kids her own age.
Mary decides she wants to learn how to ride…
Chapter Warnings: Bad Language words.
Chapter Pairings:  Frank Adler x OFC Fliss Gallagher
A/N: So yeah, this one’s been buzzing in my head for AGES now. As you all know, I’m a Brit so I’m REALLY sorry if too much British horsey lingo slips into this…ASK away if you don’t understand. As means of an explanation in the UK we have 3 main types of stables. We have Riding Schools (which focus solely on providing riding lessons), Livery Yards (which are places where owners board their horses) and Equestrian Centres (which do both). After a bit of research it seems that EC also translates across the pond and means the same thing so…just bear with me on this and run with it!
Disclaimer: This is a pure work of fiction and classified as 18+. Please respect this and do not read if you are underage. I do not own any characters in this series bar Fliss Gallagher and the other OCs. By reading beyond this point you understand and accept the terms of this disclaimer.

“I’m holding you solely responsible for this.” Frank shot Roberta a glare as Mary bounced over to the truck, her blonde hair swinging slightly as she skipped.
“All I said was that it might be useful to have her interact with kids her own age before you throw her into a school, which for the record, I still think is a dumbass idea Frank.” “Input noted and duly ignored…” Frank rolled his eyes “She needs to go to school. Have some kind of variant on a normal childhood.”
Roberta took a deep breath and simply shrugged “On your head be it.”
“Come on Frank!” Mary shouted, standing up on the ledge of the truck “we’re gonna be late!”
“It’s 20 minutes tops to Pinellas Park…” Frank looked at her “We got half an hour, chill out Stack”
“My name’s Mary not Short Stack…” she sing songed back.
“Don’t I know it…” Frank said, looking at her before he turned back to Roberta “I’ll see you later.”
“Hmmm” she nodded, and with that he rolled his eyes again and headed to the truck.
“You know you’re not actually gonna get to ride anything today right?” he asked, turning to his niece.
“No, but I’m still gonna see the ponies.” she said, smiling. “Why can’t we bring Fred?”
“Because a horse might step on him.” Frank shrugged, before he paused. “Actually, shall we take him?” Mary narrowed her eyes at him “That’s mean.” He chuckled, ruffled her hair and started up the truck. **** “Ok, now soften your outside hand…” Fliss called out across the paddock, as the woman riding the tall, black warmblood circled her “Yeah, you feel that. He’s taking the contact now, not leaning against your hand. So when you feel that softening, that’s when you need to push with your inside leg…and if is he isn’t listening a soft tap up with the stick…” She watched again from behind her Oakley wraparounds, smiling as the horse extended nicely down the long side of the school.
“Yeah, there you go!” she shouted encouragingly, “Now bring him round again and this time at the corner, pop him into canter…” She took a quick glance at her watch. She was running slightly behind, but what else was new? She would never leave a lesson, regardless, until her client had achieved something, even if it was what they dubbed a small victory. End on a high was her motto, and this was no different. Ever since Lucy had brought Captain out of his stable, Fliss could see the horse was in one of his awkward moods so she’d had to switch out her plan a little. It had worked and he’d settled after about 15 minutes of being an obstinate shit and he was working quite nicely.
“Good!” She shouted, pacing slightly “Now let’s see if we can extend this a little…” Lucy sat up tall, pushed through her legs and the horse bounded down the side. Fliss grinned, less than 6 months ago Lucy hadn’t even been able to keep the horse in a trot, now here she was producing an extended canter. Moments like this made her job so worthwhile…
“Ok, bring him back down…” she said, “And into trot…and walk…”
Fliss headed over to her client and smiled as she walked alongside her “That was really good Luce…you happy?” “I’m over the moon!” The teenager grinned “I can’t believe it…he went so well!”
“Yeah because you rode him well.” Fliss smiled “You know, I seriously think you should consider a Dressage Competition.”
“You think?”
“Yeah, I do. I know you don’t have a horse of your own but you can borrow Cap if you want…have a think about it.” “I will, thanks Fliss.”
Fliss smiled, gave the horse a pat and headed back to the gate.
“Joanne?” she called, and one of her grooms appeared. “Can you just supervise Lucy cooling him off. I’ve got someone bringing their daughter in at 11 am that should be here any time soon.”
“Sure.” Joanne nodded “Oh, they back barn has been mucked out but I’ve not had chance to scrub the water buckets out.” “It’s ok, you can do it after lunch” Fliss nodded. “the automatics are getting installed in a month or so which should make it a little easier.”
She patted Joanne on the shoulder and made her way into the office. Reaching for a file she dug out a Registration Form and a Liability Waiver and set them on the desk before she took a quick glance in the mirror. Satisfied that her auburn hair was tamed and there was no hay stick in it she nodded to herself and walked back on the yard, just in time to see a tall, well build dark haired man desperately trying to control a blonde haired girl who was looking around in glee and pointing.
“Hi…” she walked over, momentarily stuck by how damned good looking this guy was. He was dressed simply in a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt which perfectly accentuated his tone upper body. His chiselled jawline which was covered in a short, stubbled beard, soft spikey dark hair, and he flashed her a smile that made the corners of his aviator covered eyes crinkle. A smile that made her clear her throat. “I’m Fliss, you must be Mr Adler.”
Frank looked at the woman in front of him, glad that his glasses hid the fact he was blatantly eyeing her up and down. Dressed in a pair of long riding boots, tight navy blue jodhpurs with a white belt around the top, and a tight pink polo shirt he could see every curve she possessed. But it was the smile she flashed him that made him feel like some kind of teenage school kid again.  “Frank, please.” “Nice to meet you Frank.” Fliss smiled, noting how deep his voice sounded, it was much more gravelly than on the phone and there was a Boston twang to his accent. She shook his hand, his palm and fingertips slightly calloused against her skin, and then turned to Mary “And what can I call you Miss?” “Mary.” the little girl infomed her, looking up “Are all these horses yours?”
Fliss chuckled. “No not all of them. Eight belong to me. Two are my personal ones, then I have 6 that work in the riding school and the other six are boarders.” “Oh.” Mary pondered, looking around. “So which one can I ride?” “Mary…” Frank chastised her softly as he looked down at her, before glancing back at Fliss “Sorry, she’s excited.” Fliss laughed and shook her head “It’s fine, I love to see it.”
She turned to Mary and then in an exaggerated whisper so that Frank could here said “I’ll let you into a secret, I always put the new kids on Monty because he’s awesome and looks after everyone and he especially likes girls. He’s a ladies man. You wanna meet him?” Mary nodded eagerly and Fliss looked up at Frank, seeking his permission. He nodded and gestured with his head and she straightened up before leading Mary across the yard to the barn on the opposite side.
Frank stayed where he was for a moment, watching her ass as she walked before he mentally slapped himself and followed.
Fliss led them both into the airy barn, pushing up her sunglasses and down to 2 of the smaller stables at the far end. She stopped at one that contained a small, grey pony who gave a little nicker and stuck his head over the door.
“Monty, meet Mary.” she said with a smile as Mary gently reached up to stroke the pony’s soft nose.
“He’s really pretty.” Mary nodded, appraisingly.
“Yeah he’s awesome.” Fliss smiled, “And he’s a good boy too.” “Can I go in the stable?” Mary asked.
“Erm… if your dad says it’s ok?” Fliss looked at Frank who was tucking his sunglasses down the front of his shirt.
“I’m not her dad.” Frank shook his head “I’m her uncle.” “Oh, sorry.” Fliss frowned “I just assumed.”
“I get it a lot.” he waved her apology away “But I am her legal guardian so…”
Fliss nodded, studying him for a moment. There was clearly a bit more to that story but it wasn’t her business to pry.
“Can I?” Mary looked at him and he nodded.
“Ok so, Monty is really good and nothing scares him but with all horses you should always be quiet and not jump or shout.” Fliss instructed and Frank had to smile as Mary nodded seriously. He hadn’t seen her this engrossed in anything other than books for a long time. Maybe Roberta had been right.
Fliss unbolted the stable door and walked in, leading Mary in after her. She showed her where he liked to be scratched and Mary giggled as she rubbed at the spot on the pony’s withers and he began to tilt his head to the side, lips moving against Fliss’s arm as he nuzzled into her.
“What’s he doing?” Mary asked.
“It’s called grooming.” Fliss explained “So he is mimicking what you’re doing to him by doing it to me, see? It’s how they show affection in the wild. Sometimes they can get a bit carried away and they nip but they don’t mean to be nasty or bite.”
She looked over to Frank, keeping one eye on the small girl who was engrossed in petting Monty and looked at him “So, are you just after her learning to ride then or…” Frank nodded “It’s a long story but, she needs a hobby and this was the only thing that seemed to get her excited. Of course it would be the one that will milk me dry.” he raised his voice a little.
“Spend less money on beer when you go out tonight” she shot back, and Fliss gave a loud bark of a laugh as Frank, shook his head.
“See what I gotta put up with?” he snorted.
“You should talk to my dad about it.” She grinned. “I bled him dry due to horses as a kid, especially when I was up and down the UK competing!” “I was gonna say your accent isn’t local.” He said, smiling.
“Neither is yours.” she shot back “Boston, am I right?” He cocked his head, momentarily surprised. He didn’t think his accent was that strong considering.
“Yeah.” he nodded, “But I aint lived there in a while.” “I lived in Concorde” she explained, noticing his puzzled glance
“Huh, no kidding.” he smiled “Cambridge.” “Nice city.” Fliss smiled “I loved it.”
“What made you end up here?”
Fliss hesitated for a while. “Erm..” “Sorry, you don’t need to explain, I was just a little curious.” “No, it’s fine, just a long and complicated story.” Fliss scratched her temple “The abridged version is my marriage broke down and my mum and dad retired out here so I joined them.” She was avoiding his eyes slightly. Frank was smart enough to realise there was slightly more to it than that but he was tactful enough not to press. Besides, it was really none of his business.
“How about you? What you running from?” “What makes you think I’m running from anything?” he looked at her.
“Aren’t we all?” she looked at him, her deep brown eyes locked onto his.
He hesitated for a moment and then shrugged “Again, a long and complicated story but I wanted to give Mary a life away from hassle. And there was a lot of that in Boston.” He held her gaze and she simply nodded, before turning back to Mary.
“Ok Mary, how about we head into the office, get some forms signed and we can see about booking you in for your first lesson?” Frank watched as Fliss explained the importance of the kick-bolt on the bottom of the stable and showed her how to lock it before they three of them headed back onto the yard.
“Fliss, sorry to interrupt but do you want Cap and Bolt turned out?” a young girl with blonde hair approached them.
“Yeah, they’re not working today.” Fliss said, “But take them one at a time. Bolt’s taking to being a bit bargey. If he starts wrap the lead-rope round his nose.” “Will do.” “Thanks Jo.” she smiled, and the continued.
“What’s bargey?” Mary asked.
“Pushy.” Frank looked at her “Bossy.” “Like you?” Frank shot her a look and saw Fliss smiling to herself as she overheard.
“Or it could mean pain in the ass like you.” he shrugged. “Rude.” Mary shot back as Fliss opened the door to the office. Frank leaned over to hold it open.
“Thanks.” she looked at him smiling. He stepped in after Mary and they both stood, looking around taking it all in.
There was a large photo on the wall to the left, of someone, he presumed Fliss, on a horse jumping an obscenely high fence. On the wall at the back was a number of shelves, one containing files and the others a few more framed photos, one taken outside the gates to the yard of Fliss and a few others, he assumed her staff, and the other contained a number of trophies and a…
“Woah!” Mary said, scooting over “Is that yours?” “Sure is.” Fliss beamed, reaching up to retrieve the box frame. She led it flat on the desk and Mary scrambled up onto the chair to take a closer look.
The frame was split into two. On the right hand side was a photo of Fliss dressed in competition gear, navy jacket, red piping, white jodhs and a navy hat. She had a smile on her face that was literally ear to ear and round her neck sat the gold medal which was displayed in the left of the frame.
“London 2012…” Mary read the small plaque at the bottom “Frank, look…” “I can see.” he nodded, surprise evident in his tone. He looked at the woman “You were in the Olympics?” “Yeah.” she smiled “Only one though. Trained for years to get there…”
“Why only one?” Mary looked at her.
“Mary.” Frank groaned “Stop being nosey.” “It’s ok.” Fliss chuckled “A few months later at the World Championships later that year I had a nasty accident. I damaged my back and it took me nearly six months to recover. Sadly I lost my place on the team.” “Oh, that’s sad.” Mary looked at her.
“It’s a dog eat dog world kid.” Fliss shrugged “Not all bad though, I got into the training side of things which was great. Just my professional career didn’t work out.” There was a moments pause and Fliss replaced the photo and turned to Frank “Can I get you anything to drink?” “No, I’m good thanks.” he smiled.
“Ok, so…” Fliss said, “Mary I’m gonna need my seat back sweetie.” Mary obligingly jumped back down and Fliss took her vacated place, gesturing to the chair by the desk. Frank sat in it and Mary immediately jumped into his lap, her bare legs brushing slightly as she swung them to and fro.
“I have a few forms that you need to fill in and sign.” she said, apologetically “Legal stuff, contact details, waivers, that kind of thing. Safety is paramount at Sandybrook but, accidents to happen. Horse riding can be a dangerous sport…falls happen… as I know only too well.” Frank smiled and nodded.
“But I can give you those to take home, you can bring them with you when you come back.”  Fliss reached into her desk drawer. She pulled out a glossy leaflet and opened it. “Our price list is here. I’m not a huge outfit, I don’t have more than 3 kids on a lesson at a time. Mainly because I don’t have the horses but I prefer to focus on the students, not the profit. I try to keep overheads down as much as I can to keep the costs low…”
She bit her lip, she hated this part of the job, the sales patter as her dad called it. “So it really depends on what you want to do as to how expensive it is. Group lessons are $20 for forty five minutes and individual lessons are $30 for thirty. I do always insist on an individual lesson first, but that’s discounted to $20 for the first one.” Frank nodded, it wasn’t cheap but they’d manage. He’d already explained to Mary that she wouldn’t be able to do it every week, but he could certainly stretch to once a fortnight.
“That’s reasonable.” he said after a pause.
Fliss smiled “I’ve only been open a year or so now, but I’m planning on starting up a few Own a Pony days where the kids can come down and learn how to care for the horses as well as just ride. But that’s all in the planning stages.” “Well you have a good set up.” he said, and she beamed back.
“Thank you, a lot of graft went into setting it up. My mom and dad’s retirement didn’t start out quite as quiet as they had planned!”
“I can imagine.”
“Ok,so…the real expensive outlay is gonna come at the start.” she said, turning to Mary “You’ll need some boots and a hat kiddo.” Mary grinned up at Frank.
“I do have hats I can loan for a few lessons but it is better if they have their own.” she looked at Frank. “It’s the one thing I don’t recommend getting second hand. But boots and jodhpurs etcetera you can pick up on e-bay and the like.” Frank nodded “And the hat?”
“There’s a great store not far from here…hang on…”  she dug in her drawer again and produced a flier. “Here… the kid stuff is pretty reasonable to be fair, you’re probably looking at about $30 for a decent hat but they’ll help you out. If you take my brochure in you’ll get a 20% discount too.”
Mary took the flier from her and began examining it.
“That’s really it.” Fliss said, as she completed her mental check list “So all that’s left is to either book you in or you can call me…” “Please Frank!” Mary looked at him “Can we book?” Frank nodded “If you want.” “I do…” “Ok…what availability do you have?” Fliss opened the laptop and entered the diary and looked for a free spot.” “Does Wednesday at one suit?” she offered “I know once school starts you’ll probably want a weekend or evening but. whilst it’s the holidays does that work?”
Frank nodded “Yeah that’s fine. I can jiggle work around” Fliss tapped on the keyboard and smiled “All booked. If you want to leave me your number I send a text update out the night before just as a reminder.” Frank smiled, and gave out her number which she stored in the diary slot and then clicked saved “All done…guess I’ll see you Wednesday.” “Thanks.” he smiled “And thanks for showing us around.” “Not a problem.” she shook her head “Always important the clients get the tour of the place, to make sure they like it.” “Its awesome.” Mary looked up “Can we go here on the way home.” Frank sighed and looked at Fliss raising an eyebrow. She laughed.
“Yeah, get used to it. Once you get that horse smell on your hands it’s kind of an addiction.” “Frank hates animals.” Mary shrugged.
“I don’t hate animals.” Frank shook his head.
“You hate Fred.” “No, I don’t”
“You said before we should bring him so a horse steps on him.” Frank inwardly groaned as Fliss gave a chuckle.
“Fred is my cat.” Mary explained.
“Good name.” Fliss said “I have a few yard cats hanging around, they keep the mice at bay. And that reminds me, I haven’t seen Thor in a while…”
“Thor?” Mary looked at her
“Yeah, my dog…” Fliss stood up and opened the office door, giving a sharp whistle. “He never goes far.” As if on cue a large german shepherd came lolling down the yard to greet them. Frank eyed the dog, it was huge. Mary, right on cue jumped down off his lap.
“Can I stroke him?” “Go right ahead.” Fliss said, she looked at Frank and spotting his face she smiled “He’s a softie, looks the part though.” “Well I wouldn’t mess put it that way.” Frank snorted, standing up.
“Is he named after the Avenger?” Mary looked up “I love those films.”
“Sure is, he used to have a brother called Loki too but, well he died.”
Thor gave Mary a lick causing her to giggle before he flopped onto his side raising his paw.
“He wants a belly rub.” Fliss smiled, and Mary dropped to her knees to give the dog a tickle. His tail began to wag furiously on the floor and Mary laughed.
Frank watched the girl, smiling. He loved seeing her like this. She was so grown up and serious half the time, he yearned to see her acting like a normal seven year old. He was reticent to drag her away for that reason but he had work later that afternoon, a boat that needed finishing by Monday afternoon was taking him slightly longer than he had anticipated.
“Alright short stack, we gotta move…” “Do we hafta?” “Sorry kiddo.” Mary made a face.
“Do you wanna go to the store or not?” “Ok.” she said, jumping up and wiping dusting off her knees.
Fliss walked them to the truck which was parked in the car park and her eyes flew over to her horse wagon, a small 3.5 tonne box. Frank noticed her looking before she turned back to him
“Yours?”
“Yeah, I did have a bigger one but, well I don’t use it often enough now to warrant it. Maybe at some point I’ll get back into competing…never say never hey?” He smiled.
“Ok, so I’ll see you Wednesday.” she said To Frank’s utter surprise, Mary walked over to the woman and wrapped her arms around her, giving her waist as squeeze, her head pressing into Fliss’s stomach. Fliss bent over to give the girl a quick hug and smiled.
“It was nice to meet you both.” Fliss released Mary and gently ruffled her hair “I can’t wait to see you ride.” Mary headed over to the passenger side of the truck and stood on the sill so she could yank open the door. Fliss turned to Frank and looked at him, frowning slightly.
“Sorry, was that too much? I didn’t mean-” “Oh,God,no.” Frank stuttered, hastily shaking his head. “No, it’s just…well she’s never usually that affectionate with strangers. Not that you’re a stranger I suppose, not anymore but…” he shrugged.
“I’m flattered then.” Fliss said, her pretty face cracking into a smile which Frank couldn’t help but return. There was a moment of silence where he simply looked at her before he started suddenly.
“I should…” he gestured to the truck with his keys.
“Yeah, sorry. Have a good day Mr Adler…” “Frank…” “Frank.” she corrected herself with another gorgeous smile “I’ll see you Wednesday.” With a smile of his own and a nod he walked to the truck and Fliss turned and headed back to the yard.
He climbed in and turned to Mary who was looking at him, smirking in a smug way that was well beyond her years.
“What?” he demanded.
“You like her.” Mary snorted.
“She’s a nice girl, I mean woman…lady…”
Mary didn’t say a word, simply sat back as Frank reached around for her belt before doing his own and setting the truck into reverse. Sometimes she was far too observant for her own good. *****
“If she gives you any trouble just tie her up on the porch.” Frank said as Mary settled on the couch in Roberta’s trailer. Roberta snorted and Mary glared at him.
“The only one who gives me trouble around here is you Frank Adler.” Roberta shot back. “Now scoot, Mary’s gotta tell me all about this pretty girl at the stables she says you’re sweet on.” “Jesus…” Frank groaned “I’m not sweet on her, she was just nice.”
“He googled her.” Mary said.
“You googled her” Roberta intoned.
“I was curious ok?” Frank sighed “And you asked me to!” “She’s an Olympic Gold medallist.” Mary chanted, draping herself over the arm of the sofa, head hanging, hair brushing the floor “At London 2012 but then she had an accident in the World Championships later that year and she broke two vertebrae…she didn’t compete again. And she was married to a guy called John Stazaker, he was on the US team but they’re divorced now. He’s in prison…but Frank didn’t tell me why.” “Because it’s none of your business, and you don’t mention it to her.” Frank said sternly, cutting her off.
Roberta looked at him curiously “But you’re not interested in her,at all.” “Like I said, curious.” he shrugged “Especially if she’s gonna be teaching Mary.”
“Mmmhmmm.” Roberta dropped her hands to her hips “Whatever you say honey…” Frank sighed and then looked at Mary. “Be good.” “I will, see you in the morning…”
He nodded and then headed out. It was a pleasant evening, the heat of the day had died down to an acceptable level and the ten minute walk down to the small strip of bars wasn’t as sticky as normal. It passed fairly quickly, he was lost in thought about the woman he had met before. It had made for surprising reading, a child star on the circuit the accident had cruelly robbed her of a future in the sport five years ago, and from the sounds of it her ass-hat ex-husband had stolen three years of her life too. Still, as he had told Mary, it was none of their business.
He yanked the door open to Fergs and headed over to the bar. Ordering his usual he perched on a stool and pulled over one of the papers, flicking it open. Taking a pull of the beer he was handed, he let out a sigh. Friday nights were always his time, his one night of the week where he wasn’t Frank with the Dead Sister and the child genius niece to bring up. He was just plain old Frank Adler, perpetual bachelor that might or might not get lucky, depending on how the night went.
Half an hour or so later he was another beer deep and completely lost in his reading. So much so he was barely aware of the body besides him as it slid into the space next to him at the bar. That was until they spoke.
“So how much did she sting you for at the store?”
Frank grinned at Fliss “Just short of a hundred. New hat, boots and a pair of jodhpurs.” Fliss giggled “Make sure she wears the boots in, they’re a killer for the first few days!” “I’ll bear it in mind.” he smiled “So, you hear alone or…” “Oh, no. It’s my Mum’s birthday so there’s a few of us out.” she said, glancing over her shoulder. Frank followed her eyes and settled on a table full of women who were all laughing. One looked quite similar to Fliss, same face shape and nose, who he assumed to be her mother. “If I’m honest it’s a bit boring considering they’re all over fifty but…” Frank laughed “Well I was gonna offer to buy you a drink but…” She laughed again “Thanks but, there’s a kitty going…” with that she turned to the bar tender. “Hiya, can I get 4 bud lights, a gin and tonic and a vodka soda please?” The bar tender nodded and headed off.
“Mary hasn’t shut up about Monty all afternoon.” Frank said and Fliss smiled.
“Like I said, once they get the bug they’re bitten.” “It’ll be good for her to have a hobby.” Frank repeated his earlier sentiment “She doesn’t get much interaction with kids her age.”
“Oh, what about School?” Fliss asked. Frank hesitated and took a drink from his bottle. Fliss let out a silent groan “Sorry, that’s really none of my business.” “No, it’s fine.” Frank shook his head, swallowing his beer. “She’s err, home schooled at the moment. My neighbour thought a hobby might be a good way for her to kinda do that before she goes to school.”
Fliss smiled “Well she’s not wrong. The kids I teach are great, I don’t stand for any crap, she’ll be welcomed with open arms.”
“Glad to hear it.” Frank smiled “Mary can be a litte…well, I suppose, odd is the right word. She’s old before her age.”
“Oh I know all about that.” Fliss smiled. “I spent most of my childhood training. Didn’t get chance to do much normal kid stuff. I was that focussed on my dream of gold medals…” “And you achieved it.” Frank nodded.
“Yeah, wish it had lasted longer you know, but what can you do.” she shrugged. “Hey, you never know, Mary might find a sudden hidden talent that catapults her into stardom…” Frank stiffened slightly and it didn’t go unnoticed by Fliss. She hesitated for a moment before Frank shook his head and smiled “Maybe, although that would really gonna fuck my bank balance…”
Fliss chuckled, eyeing him slightly. The man was a total mystery. At that the Bar Tender returned with a tray of drinks and she turned to pay him, waving away the change.
“Well, I guess I’ll see you Wednesday.” she smiled “Bye Frank.” “Yeah, have a good evening.” he smiled and she turned and walked away. Frank watched her go, the tight jeans she was wearing accentuated her ass and her legs, helped by the white heels she was wearing. The loose white cami top rode up slightly as she bent over to deposit the tray and when the woman he assumed to be her mother caught his eye and gave a knowing smirk he hastily turned around.
“Another beer please pal.” he said, waving his empty bottle
****
“Who’s that?”  Verity leaned over to Fliss as she settled in the seat next to her.
“Oh, that’s the guy I was telling you about.” she shrugged “the one who brought his niece up to the Centre this morning.” “I know you said he was good looking but…”
“Shut up Mum.” Fliss said, flushing slightly
“You’re old enough to be his mother.” Jane, one of the other women said and the table laughed.
“I wasn’t looking for me…” Fliss rolled her eyes “Seriously?” Verity laughed and placed her arm round her daughter, giving her a squeeze. “I’m just teasing Lissy, its just nice to see you talking to someone, that’s all.” Fliss smiled and grabbed her beer, taking a drink.
“Who the fuck was that?” John said, pointing across the packed bar to the man that Fliss had just smiled at.
“No one…” Fliss protested “Just a guy from work, that’s all.” “Right…” John said, the nerve in his jaw twitching. Fliss swallowed nervously and gently touched his arm.
“Honestly, he works at the stables. I was just being polite.”
“He’s eye fucking you.” “No, he’s not…” Fliss rolled her eyes and immediately realised what he had done when John gripped her chin painfully between his thumb and forefinger.
“Don’t roll your eyes at me.” he practically snarled.
“I’m sorry…” Fliss said, the tears springing forth “John you’re hurting me…” He let go and she dropped her head, turning back to the bar. She picked up her drink and took a long pull from the bottle, trying to compose herself. Her hand was shaking, she’d made him angry.
And she knew what that meant…
“Hey…” her mother’s voice shook her out of the memory and she looked up at her. “Oh Liss…”
“I’m ok…” she said, taking a breath.
Her mother looked at her again, and Fliss knew she was busted. “I was just…having a flash back that’s all.”
“He’s not here.” Verity dropped her voice “That fucker is where he belongs, behind bars and he won’t be bothering you again. Me and your dad promised you that…and we meant it.”
“I know, honestly I’m fine…” Fliss assured her mum who leaned over and gave her temple a soft kiss.
Fliss smiled back and shooting one last glance at Frank, who has his back to the table as he continued his reading, she turned to the women and threw herself into the conversation.

could we get more soft teddy boy/ high school paul au content? i loved the first one about the first kiss so much 👉👈
(Hey, this is the post anon is referring to!)
Aw, yeah I'm glad you liked it! I feel like that one didn't do so hot, but I liked it too 😂😂
Hope you're up for a roller skate date! 😌
---
The last bell of the day rings, sending the whole school scampering on their way out. You fight against the flood of people, trying to keep a steady pace as you look around for your boyfriend.
"Paul?"
"Coming!"
He shoves his way through the crowd and makes it over to you in a jiffy. Before you can greet one another properly, he takes your hand and tows you through the hoard to a safe spot along the wall.
"There you are, I was worried you might get swept off!" you both share a laugh as he nods towards the steady stream of teenagers exiting the building. "Now, are you ready to go?"
School's been rather hard for you lately, what with mid terms coming up and all, so Paul promised you a date today to take the edge off. However... He's been rather secretive about where you're going or what you'll be doing. But, you trust him, so really it's just the suspense that's killing you.
"Ready if you are!", you beam. Paul kisses your forehead and takes your hand once more, this time following the flow of students as you make your way to the parking lot.
It's a bright and sunny day out in Liverpool, and the sun feels wonderful on your skin as you wait for Paul to fish out his keys. True to his word, he saved up and managed to get his own car, a fast and pretty like coupe.
Thankfully not too expensive, and it has the added bonus of not grinding rust and flakes of metal into your nice clothes whenever you sit on the hood. At last he finds his prize and, like a true gentleman, opens and shuts your door for you.
He comes around quickly and hops in the driver's seat. "Phew, what a day eh?", he pulls his tie loose, sheds his uniform suit jacket, and tousles his hair with a quick check to the mirror.
You sigh dramatic and slide down in your seat, "You can say that again! I've had two pop quizzes today... Two! What are the odds of that? I'll tell you, it's al-"
Paul starts up the engine and drives on, listening happily as you rant about your day. Of course, the conversation turns after a while and the two of you chat about other things: home, work, friends, and the like.
In fact, you get so caught up in conversation, you don't even realize you've arrived until Paul shuts down the engine.
"Surprise!", he motions to the big gleaming sign of the newly built roller rink.
You gasp, a small squeal if excitement escaping you. You've been wanting to come here since you first heard it was being built, but you never found the time. "Oh Paul, are we really!"
"Well it's right there isn't it? Come on!", he jumps out and comes around to get you. This time around, it would seem you're dragging him along through the double doors and up to the front desk. Everything smells of fresh carpet and wood with a touch of rubber as you take in the atmosphere.
Paul pays for two tickets and taps your shoulder to beckon you on. You trot up behind him to the skates counter and receive a pair in your respective sizes. Paul laces his up quick and tight, but your excitement has you messing up a bit.
"Here, let me help", he laughs and bends down to cinch up your laces. Once they're nice and secured, he helps you to your feet.
You wobble a little as you get your bearings, but you adjust to the skates in but a moment as you coast across the carpet and to the hard wood arena. Paul stays close behind to ensure you don't fall, but you have more experience then he gives you credit for.
Once your feet hit the planks, you launch off with speed and skill, flying around as lights and music dazzle at your passing. You look over your shoulder to see Paul hurrying quickly along to catch up.
"Gotcha!"
You shriek with glee as he takes you by the waist and picks you up off the ground, doing a little spin as he does so. He lowers you gently, trying not to disturb the other skaters any more then he already has, and turns you gently to face him.
Without even waiting for a signal, you reach up and give him a long kiss in the dimmed lights. You can feel his lips curl into a smile, but he doesn't break the exchange until you're ready. After a moment, you pull back and take a gasp of air, a soft laugh following suit.
A new song comes on, much more slow and pretty then the fast paced rock n roll they've been playing. The two of you look up to notice that a few couples have taken center rink, and Paul invites you to join him.
Feeling giddy, you skate over hand in hand to a spot you can call your own. Paul puts his hands on your hips and you yours on his chest as you spin each other in a slow circle. He leans his forehead down against yours, and hums along to the tune of the music.
"Paul?"
"Hm?"
"...Thank you. This is wonderful"
He kisses your forehead, "You're wonderful"
A blush creeps up your cheeks, and find yourself feeling quite thankful for the cover of dark. When the song reaches a creshendo, Paul lifts you high into the air, then lowers you down for a kiss, his arms locked securely under your legs.
The other couples clap at Paul's expertice, but he ignores them. Right now it's just you, and him.
And when the song ends, albeit all too soon, you lap around together again and again until you're both tuckered out. But before you go, Paul promises you he'll bring you back.

12-16 for that song meme! also i love your art so much!! 👍🏼
wuaaaa thank you so much!!! :')))
(and I'm sorry these answers inevitably expanded)
12: A song from your preteen years
Runaway by Kanye West - middle school was radio until eighth grade and then it was a lot of The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Ed Sheeran (before he lost his virginity), Amy Winehouse, and Motown tunes? I feel like Glee was the gateway...
13: One of your favorite 80’s songs
True by Spandau Ballet - the song for thinking about your crush (as it is used in Sky High) but I love so many 80s songs
14: A song that you would love played at your wedding
Talk to Me by Sunny and the Sunliners - don't think I'll have a wedding but I have songs saved for romantic scenes and I always think about about this one. a slow dance, spinning in close, camera goes wide on the twirl out
15: A song that is a cover by another artist
Lately I've been listening to Angel Olsen's cover of Eyes Without A Face a lot! and I will always love Lauryn Hill's cover of Can't Take My Eyes Off of You
16: One of your favorite classical songs
I know it's too easy but Debussy's 'Clair de Lune'... mostly because they use in in the audio tour of Casa Batllo in Barcelona so it always sends me back to walking in the main room for the first time

Eva VS. Becca: War of the (Head of the Family’s) World
@pomme003  just for you, thanks for the request. Hope you enjoy it!!!!!
Eva groaned at the imminent approach of Les Revenants, inwardly cursing herself that she not only A. managed to allow Baldwin to worm his way back into her life after so many years and B. agreed to this awful children’s party.
“remind me again, why the daffy duck I’m here?” Since she would be around the children, Eva had been informed she could not use swear words, so instead became quiet colourful with her language
Baldwin switched the car engine off and turned his lips up into a devilish smirk. His thick, preened eyebrows wagged up and down as he childishly pointed to his crotch “few reasons”
She rolled her eyes for the hundredth time that day and simply stepped out of the car ignoring his baritone chuckle. She regretted ever telling him that he was the best she ever had, and teased her relentlessly about it. He loved it. She definitely fucking loved it.
His arms grew wide as he knelt lower to scoop up the bounding six year old. His arms wrapped tightly around her as he jiggled her onto his hip. Becca peered over his shoulder scouting for the ugly blonde haired menace that had stolen her favourite Uncy away. She had been the focus of his attention for as long as she could remember, and then he married that thing. Her beady eyes met Eva’s deep blue ones and she scowled.
War had begun.
Eva bit her lip, biting back the profanity she wanted to spill out. she had listened to Baby shark, paw patrol and various other children’s songs. She had begrudgingly joined in with the hokey cokey twice and participated in put the tail on the donkey. During the Hokey Cokey Becca had ‘accidently’ stepped on her toes more then once. the first time it was sweet, the 8th time it had been blasphemous. And she couldn’t even fudging swear!
Her ear drums bled as S Club Juniors blasted them, and she felt like it was the 2000’s again. Phoebe most definitely selected this playlist. Her bum met an uncomfortable chair as the music stopped, as this was the game; ‘musical chairs’.
Becca scowled from her position, she had sat in the chair next to the evil woman. She had to think of a plan to make her go away and didn’t know what to do. She had to make sure her Uncy was free of her, so he would go back to seeing her every weekend like he promised. He never broke his promises, till she showed up.
The music started again, as did the game. Fiercely competitive, Becca and Eva were the last ones standing (or sitting depending on the music). Becca knew this was her chance to strike, and acted like a girl on a mission. It was about as tense as it could be for the 6 year old, and the vampire could not have been more bored. The music thudded, then it stopped. In perfect timing, Becca had kicked the plastic chair over so evil woman landed on her bum.
She had never giggled quiet so loud, and Eva laughed along too. She could laugh at her own expense, and found it of the upmost humour the little girl dared to do such things to her.
“REBECCA!” Diana shouted “That is NOT how we treat our guests!”
The girls brows furrowed, why could they not see the good she was doing? “It accident” she feigned a lip pout, hoping the fake sob earned her brownie points
Baldwin chuckled, lifting the girl into his arms “I find it highly unlikely the birthday princess would do such things” he kissed her on the cheek, eyeing her carefully “would you, Cara”
She shook her head tucking it into the crook of his neck “No Uncy” her eyes once more found Eva’s, and this time the adult vampire took notice of hateful look.
She knew it was not an accident.
Dinner had been lovely, as side from the child that repeatedly kicked her under the table. She had insisted that she sat on Baldwins lap, and did not apologies as she thudded her chunky little thighs against Eva’s leg when demanding ‘juicy juice’. It didn’t hurt, though it had been utterly annoying.
Eva knew better then to row with Baldwin over his niece, especially at her birthday but when they left they would be having stern words.
“Finish your steak pieces, then you can have juicy juice” Diana gave her daughter another stern look, and the little girl hated it. What was it about blondes? It was like the evil woman was Queen and Mummy had fallen under her spell. And Mummy was a powerful Witch.
Perhaps in hindsight trying her on beakers without lids had been far too premature. At the moment the juicy juice made it’s way to Becca’s tiny hands she had already reconciled the loss of it. She thought, this plan would be better then tasting the juice itself. She smiled, it had been a full cup. She reached for the cup’s lip, and allowed it to slip from her grasp mid-air. As if from a film clip, the air stilled and began in slow motion. Perfectly planned, the pink cup tumbled in the air spilling it’s contents on Eva’s lap.
Eva’s chair screeched along the floor and her voice matched the pitch “RIGHT THAT’S IT!” She flung her napkin to the table “IM DONE” With the speed of a vampire, she rushed out the door completely embarrassed and infuriated at the days events.
She had allowed herself to be bullied by a 6 year old, and now covered in blood. The last time her clothes were this stained, it had been during a battle. Now she was at war with a child.
Baldwin had been courting Eva on and off for three centuries, and now they were mated it had been a lot easier to bend her to his will. After the ‘cup falling’ incident, they had retreated to Sept-Tours with Ysabeau to help calm her down. She would not harm the girl, but the house would be an entirely different affair. He knew her well, and the oak table and walls had a lucky escape from his ferocious mate.
What would not be so easy, would be reconciling this feud between them that stemmed from his beloved niece. He thought it easier if he did not like the little thing but he was besotted. Nothing moved his sense of responsibility to her and it wounded him slightly knowing she did not approve of his wife.
He made pace for Les Revenants, hoping to have caught Becca before she slept. It had grown late, but this would be time she had her bed time bath and drink.
He let an alleviated sigh out as Diana had been just about ready to empty the bath tub. Without conversation, he simply picked up Becca’s pink towel and began to pat her dry. He could see her eyes were red and puffy; she had definitely been crying. He took care to dry her off, making sure between her tiny toes and little fingers were carefully covered by the towel and then helped her into her pyjamas.
She had a choice between two stuffies that she liked taking to bed, Elmo and a silver back Gorilla plushie. The silver back, appropriately named ‘Gerald’ had been bought by her favourite Uncy when he took them to Safari Park in the cold country they went too. It was her favourite, he bought it for her and it was black and grey like him.
She settled into her bed and waited for him to speak first. Diana had taken Philippe to their room, so she could allow her brother in law time to talk to her daughter, though she listened intently outside in case. She had still been uneasy around him, after all this time, but knew with absolute fervency he would not ever cause her daughter upset. Purposefully.
“You were not very nice to Aunty Eva, you should not have poured your juicy on her” he had knelt by her beside like a Knight
“It accident” she couldn’t look at him, and her little lip trembled. Her father had already turned his back on her, and her mother had been cold. She just wanted her Uncy and now everyone had been angry. And it was her birthday.
He held her chin carefully, making sure she looked at him “I do not think it was an accident, I think you meant to do it”
Her eyes spilled over again as she buried her little face into her stuffie. He felt like the Wolf from the ‘three little pigs’ , the amount of times he had exhaled today. He surely could have blown the house down by now. He picked her up, settling her on his lap as he (uncomfortably) slid up the Frozen bed. Her little frame shook against his as she sniffled, and it took some time before the tears stopped again.
“I thought you did not like her” he raised a brow as Becca looked up from her dolly, a guilty look on her face “Eva thinks you feel abit left out” he took the girls silence as a green light and rubbed her back soothing the last of her sniffles “how about, tomorrow I take you horse riding, hmm”
She peered up at him, and moved to stand on his thighs “just me you?” her sad face turned into a bright glow at the prospect
“No, I thought Eva could join us” her lip trembled again, and he knew he had to reconcile the situation “Becca, Eva is very special to me and I would hope my number one girl would get along with her”
Her bright smile had returned when he called her his number one “I your nubber one girl” she giggled, nervously twirling her hands over her jammies
“But of course, who else would be?” his smile matched hers, and she fell into his chest wrapping her short arms around his neck giggling with glee.
He knew Matthew would be annoyed for keeping her up so late, but he could not resist tickling her until her sadness had been drowned out by fits of laughter.

Tree House Kisses, Chapter 41 (Adorney) - Scorpio and Veronica
A/N: Hi everyone! Okay so, in this chapter, they begin working on a new musical, and I URGE you to check it out if you haven’t: The Scarlet Pimpernel. Also! I made a playlist with every song we’ve used as chapter titles, including the upcoming ones pretty much through the end of the story. Click here for previous chapters or here if you’d rather read on AO3. And thank you SO MUCH to wonderful betas: @saiphl, @sillylittlecandycane!!! XOXOXO
Chapter Summary: New semester, new school musical: and Courtney’s star is finally on the rise.
Chapter 41: You Are My Home
It was weird having Roy back home for the holidays, Adore thought, watching him tell a story to Bob, Jamin, and Thorgy, commanding all the attention as usual, sipping from a solo cup and gesturing wildly. It was even weirder to see him getting sloppy-drunk as the night wore on--Adore supposed that college was a bigger challenge than he’d planned for, and maybe he needed to blow off some steam. Still, seeing him grope Courtney as he bent her over Thorgy’s pool table was certainly...something different.
It was over a month since the night of her break-up with Tati, that near miss where she’d come so scarily close to a confession. Once in a while, late at night, she’d have a brief twinge of regret for not being honest. Most of the time though, she felt like she’d absolutely made the right call--their friendship was stronger than it had ever been. So Roy’s dumbass horndog behavior tonight was actually making her laugh.
Maybe it was Courtney’s eye rolls as he rubbed against her, but Adore didn’t find Roy nearly as annoying as she used to. He was no longer a looming, oppressive reminder of her hopeless crush. He was just a guy who came back from college to awkwardly hang out with his high school friends over winter break. A guy who was currently grinding pathetically against his girlfriend, trying (and failing) to get some affection.
“I thought you were gonna teach me Vanessa’s tricks,” Courtney said, pushing him away gently as she lined up her cue.
“I’m trying, but I need to get close,” Roy said, pulling her ass back against him. He leaned forward and murmured something into her hair, something which made her burst out laughing.
“Ummm...no offense, babe, but I don’t really feel like you’d be on your A game tonight,” Courtney said, still giggling.
“Rude,” he pouted.
Courtney looked up, catching Adore’s eye and sending her another exaggerated eye roll. Adore smiled back at her, shaking her head.
“Do you want to sleep over tonight?” Courtney asked.
“Yes,” Roy said, moving her hair aside to kiss her neck.
“Not you!” Courtney said, swatting him on the shoulder before giving Adore an exasperated look. “I meant Dory.”
Adore knew that it was petty, but she couldn’t help the slight thrill that Courtney was choosing her over Roy. It didn’t mean anything--they’d gotten back into their old habit of Adore staying with her every time Bonnie worked a night shift, and she knew that’s all it was. And anyway, it probably wasn’t going to happen, given the way Roy was now pouting and whining.
“Why her? She gets to see you all the time!” Roy argued, indignant. When Courtney didn’t immediately cave, he tried a softer tactic. “Please, baby, I miss you so much…”
“Fine. You can have the floor,” Courtney said, taking Adore by such surprise that she didn’t have time to cover her mouth before a loud cackle of laughter escaped.
“You are the meanest girlfriend in the entire world,” Roy said.
“I know.” Courtney leaned forward and kissed him gently on the cheek.
-
PEARL: How was your sleepover?
ADORE: So weird
PEARL: Did all three of you pile into Courtney’s bed?
ADORE: Ew, not that weird. No, Roy slept on the floor in a sleeping bag and Courtney and I slept in her bed. So like...just awkward as fuck.
PEARL: What’s wrong, you don’t like spooning her while her boyfriend is 2 feet away?
ADORE: Ugh
PEARL: Wanna come over today? Trin’s gonna be here in like an hour
ADORE: I can’t. I told Court I’d go ice skating with her and Roy.
PEARL: Well well well, how cosy
ADORE: Shut up
PEARL: The three musketeers
ADORE: SHUT UP
Adore sighed. She supposed it was probably strange that she’d been spending her whole break hanging out with Courtney and Roy, but it wasn’t her fault. Courtney invited her everywhere and Roy was just...always there. Besides, when it really came down to it, she liked Roy. And she liked how happy Courtney was when all three of them were together. And to her relief, they’d chilled out a lot on the PDA, now more like an old married couple who teased each other constantly and bickered playfully, using Adore to settle every disagreement.
So, if they had to be the Three Musketeers for another week, Adore was actually fine with that.
-
The musical for their senior year was The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Courtney was absolutely beside herself with glee when she landed the lead. All weekend, she listened to the soundtrack on repeat, falling in love with the music and story and her character, a French actress named Marguerite who was embroiled in a complicated love triangle with her British aristocrat husband and her French revolutionary ex-lover. She sang the songs over and over until she knew them by heart, and drove everyone in the household bonkers with her attempt at a French accent.
They had their first cast reading on a Monday evening in mid-January, and as usual, Mrs. Maguire had them sing through their songs as best they could. Courtney was especially excited when it came time to sing her duet with Adore, who was cast as her brother. It was a gorgeous, sappy ballad and one of her favorites in the show, always making her tear up.
Adore began a bit tentatively, since she hadn’t spent nearly as much time listening to the soundtrack as Courtney, but after a few bars, she got into it too, the drama of clinging to her “sister” as they waited in jail, facing the guillotine together.
“You are my home You make me strong And in this world of strangers, I belong to someone You are all I have You’re all I have; I need you so…”
Courtney, of course, had already memorized every word, and she sang directly into Adore’s eyes, arms wrapped around her neck.
Later, in her office, Mrs. Maguire was sitting pensively, brow furrowed in concern when Thorgy came in to let her know that the crew was finished cleaning up.
“Thor...let me ask you a question. I need a...second opinion.”
“Sure.”
“Do you think it was a mistake casting Courtney and Adore as siblings?”
“How so?” he asked carefully.
She cleared her throat. “Well...do you think they have too much of a...how should I put this...romantic vibe?”
Thorgy burst out laughing.
“Mrs. Maguire...girl…you don’t know the half of it.”
“So, I didn’t imagine that?”
“No. They’ve always been like that,” he told her.
“I mean, I knew they were close friends, but...isn’t Courtney still dating Roy?”
“Yeah...yeah. But…well, you saw it.” Thorgy chuckled again.
“Oy.” Mrs. Maguire picked up a cast list. “I may need to change some things around.”
The next day, a solution fell into her lap when Willam came to see her during the fourth period, looking more distraught than she’d ever seen him. Apparently, he was committed to the show choir for the Spring, and there were a bunch of scheduling conflicts with rehearsals, making it damn near impossible for him to play the title role he’d gotten. It was unsettling to see a kid who was normally as cool as a cucumber so upset.
“I don’t want to quit, I love doing the plays so much,” he said tearfully, and she jumped up to give him a hug.
“Of course you don’t want to quit. Listen, honey, it’s your senior year. We can definitely figure out a way for you to do both, okay? I might have to shuffle some casting, but it’ll all work out. I promise.” She hugged him again, patting him on the back.
“If you tell anyone I cried, I’ll key your car,” came his muffled voice, and she laughed, promising to keep his shameful secret.
Once he left, she sat back down, a relieved sigh leaving her. This could work out perfectly.
She spoke to all the kids individually about their new casting. Bob was over the moon when he found out he’d be taking over Willam’s title role: the wealthy aristocratic Percy, Courtney’s new husband, who uses his foppish clothing obsession as a cover in order to go into France and rescue his friends from the guillotine. And Willam was thrilled that not only did he still have a part, but a good one--taking over Adore’s role as Courtney’s brother, Armand. Adore was also delighted--she now had Bob’s role, a radical and sexy French revolutionary and compelling villain. After reading the script closely a few times, she asked Mrs. Maguire if it was necessary to play her new character, Chauvelin, as a man.
“Can’t I be a radical leftist woman instead?” she asked, during that first week of rehearsals.
“I don’t see why not,” Mrs. Maguire answered, tossing out a casual, “Courtney, Chauvelin is now your ex-girlfriend, not your ex-boyfriend.”
Courtney looked up with wide eyes before smiling and nodding, giving Adore a sassy wink. This show was certainly going to be interesting.
-
As a gentle knock sounded, Courtney rolled over slightly, whimpering. She was achy and feverish and felt absolutely awful. And to make matters worse, she’d missed two whole days of rehearsal with no telling when she’d feel better. At this rate, Mrs. Maguire would probably be giving her part away to her understudy, a freshman who’d never even been in a play before.
“Come in,” she said weakly, tears collecting in her eyes as she thought about how unfair it all was. She’d worked so hard, taken ensemble roles and been an understudy herself and helped with ticket sales and sold ads for every program and never complained, and now she was probably going to lose her one chance to be the lead in a musical.
Adore pushed the door open, offering a sympathetic, “Hey, babe, how ya doin’?”
Courtney tried to lift her head, even that small movement making her wince in pain, hot tears trickling down her cheeks.
“Don’t get up!” Adore rushed to her side, placing a few books on her nightstand. “I just came by to bring your homework.”
“Thanks,” Courtney said, sniffling.
“What’s the matter?” Adore pressed a cool hand to her cheek, lips turned down in a frown as a tear slipped down Courtney’s face.
“I’m just worried that Mrs. Maguire’s gonna give my part away,” Courtney admitted.
“Don’t worry about that. It took all of today’s rehearsal to get through half of ‘The Creation of Man.’ We have plenty of shit to work on without you. Besides, no one but you could do that part justice, anyway.”
Courtney blinked back her tears, gazing up at Adore with a grateful expression.
“Really?”
“Yeah, I promise!” Adore laughed, climbing into her bed to sit beside her. “Stop worrying, okay?”
“Aren’t you afraid you’ll get sick too?” Courtney said, pulling her blankets tighter around her shoulders.
“Nahh. You know Bonnie makes me do that dumb FluMist vaccine every year. I’m invincible.”
“I don’t think that’s actually true,” Courtney said, covering her mouth with her elbow to cough.
“Well, whatever. It’s worth it to hang out with my best friend.” Adore smiled down at her, and Courtney felt like she might cry all over again.
“Thanks, baby,” she murmured softly.
“Omigod, also...the craziest shit happened today at lunch, I have to tell you about it.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah, okay so first of all...did you know that Violet applied to Columbia early-decision and got in?”
“Wow.”
“Wow is right!” Adore exclaimed. “I mean, I know she’s smart, but she doesn’t give a shit about school. But apparently she got like, practically a perfect score on her SATs. And then everyone else started talking about what school they want to go to and they have all these plans and backup plans and I just...I had no idea our friends were like...so school motivated. It’s fucking weird.”
It surprised Courtney too...maybe not as much as Adore, because she’d figured that Trinity would have ambitious school plans, and Fame as well. And Pearl, well Pearl wasn’t very scholarly, but she assumed that she’d want to go to an art school or something.
“And I guess you’re probably planning to go to UCLA and move in with Roy or something,” Adore mumbled.
Courtney let out a rueful laugh, shaking her head. “I don’t have the grades for that.”
“What?” Adore looked confused. “Your grades are fine.”
“They’re okay. I could probably get into a Cal State. But Ms. Patterson told me in the fall that any UC is a pipe dream. So I’m probably gonna just do two years at a community college and then transfer.”
“Wait, seriously?”
“Yeah,” Courtney said, a deep sigh leaving her. “It’s for the best. We’ll save a bunch of money. My dad said he’d pay for my room and board, so I can still move out, thank god.”
“Move out where? Are you staying in the area?”
“No...but I dunno exactly. People say that Santa Barbara City College is good. Or Santa Monica college. It would be so great to be by the beach.”
“Ugh, I’d love to live near the beach. What I really want is to just move to LA, get some shitty retail job or whatever, and work on my music. I’m like, so close to convincing Bonnie what a good idea it is.”
“Adore! Omigod!” Suddenly, the aching in Courtney’s exhausted body didn’t matter, as she hoisted herself into a seated position to look directly into Adore’s hazel eyes. “We should be roommates!”
“Really?”
“Yeah! It would be perfect! Don’t you think?!” A smile lit up Courtney’s eyes, so big she thought it might split her face in two.
“Well...yeah, maybe...that could be cool.”
“I know, right?! Omigod, we’d have so much fun, and we could totally save money!” Courtney exclaimed, reaching forward to pull Adore in for a hug, her ecstatic joy pushing aside any thoughts of giving the flu to her friend.
Adore hugged her back, a light giggle slipping from her lips as she said, “I guess now we have a plan, too.”
-
Courtney was bone-tired. By the time she got over the flu, she’d missed a full week. Between catching up on her classes, the extra rehearsals, and struggling to memorize her lines, not to mention playing referee to Karen and Muriel’s latest argument over whether it was appropriate for Karen to have overnight guests, she felt like she could sleep for a week.
But she’d already agreed to this Saturday rehearsal, and she knew she needed it anyway, so she dragged herself out of bed and showed up at the theatre with an extra-large frappuccino that didn’t seem to help her exhaustion, but did make her jittery and off-balance.
That’s probably why she missed her cue, while working on her scene with Adore. At least, that’s what she would claim if anyone asked.
It was the scene in Act One where Adore’s character, Chauvelin, was trying to convince her to leave England and come back with her to Paris. She’d been zoning out a bit while Mrs. Maguire talked to Adore about the scene, explaining that her character needed to be angrier. Courtney really wasn’t paying attention like she should, but it was something about how Adore was supposed to be extra angry because not only did Marguerite abandon the French Revolution to marry a British aristocrat, but she’d also abandoned her.
Anyway, she wasn’t prepared when they started up the scene again, for the intensity with which Adore spoke her next line: “You do not belong in this cold land, with no one to understand you...to touch you.”
Adore let her fingers graze Courtney’s cheek before grabbing her waist and pulling her in roughly. A small gasp left Courtney’s lips, staring into Adore’s burning hazel eyes.
“The girl I knew could not bear this another moment,” Adore said, in a hoarse stage whisper.
As Adore inched closer, mouth softly parted, Courtney’s heart raced, fingers digging into Adore’s shoulders, eyes wide...
“Uh, Courtney?”
Courtney’s head snapped up, towards Mrs. Maguire’s voice. “Yes?”
“You’re supposed to push her away.”
“I know,” Courtney said, cheeks burning. “I was just trying to, um...act conflicted about it.”
“Wow, good work. We really believed you,” Mrs. Maguire said, and Courtney shoved Adore backwards, making her stumble slightly, nearly tripping over her feet.
“Oh god, are you okay?” Courtney reached for her hand to steady her.
“Yeah, sorry, I, uh…”
“Why don’t we take this section again, from Marguerite’s line ‘What do you know of it?’” Mrs. Maguire said, disguising her amused chuckle as a cough.
“Yeah, sure, okay.” Courtney brushed off her hands, hoping that the burning in her cheeks wasn’t obvious to everyone watching.
-
“So, Karen’s into Palm Reading now, huh?”
“Uh huh,” Courtney laughed. They were sitting around the tree in their usual lunch spot, Courtney sharing her mother’s latest passion by attempting to read Adore’s palm.
“So is that shitty broken one my lifeline?”
“No, this one is your lifeline…” Courtney said, finger trailing across Adore’s palm, making her giggle.
“And? What do you think?”
“You’re gonna live a long time.” Courtney grinned at her, eyes shining.
“Fuck,” Adore pouted. “You sure? Can I change that?”
Willam let out a braying laugh.
“Yeah, I know what you mean, lesbian. Personally I want to die young and beautiful.”
“One out of two isn’t bad,” Violet shrugged, earning a punch on the shoulder. “Ow!”
“Good one,” Trinity giggled.
“Watch it, cuz. I could punch you, too,” warned Willam.
“You just fucking try it. I dare you.”
“Guys, please calm down,” Fame interjected. As always, the voice of reason.
Still holding Adore’s hand, Courtney touched her palm again, shivers traveling up her arm.
“Stop it,” Adore said, biting her lip, but making no move to pull her hand away.
“A long, long life…” Courtney continued, flashing her winning smile.
Adore smiled back, but then off Violet’s intentionally loud scoff, she cleared her throat and finally snatched her hand back, just as Bob approached the group.
“Hey, uh...I need to speak to my wife,” Bob said, and Courtney laughed, getting up and following him a little ways away from the group.
“Is everything okay? Do you need-”
“What’s going on with you and Adore?” he asked quickly, head tilted down at her, brow slightly furrowed.
“What do you mean?” Courtney’s thoughts started racing, her heart beating quickly.
“Don’t play dumb with me, I’ve known you since we were 4.”
“I’m not playing!” Courtney said. “Maybe I’m just dumb?”
Bob put his hands on his hips, glaring at her. After a moment, he narrowed his eyes and said, “He really loves you--
Courtney sighed. “I know, Bob. Okay? You don’t think I know that? And I love him-”
“--More than you deserve.”
Courtney looked at him for a long moment, a sarcastic comeback on the tip of her tongue, which she swallowed down, defeated, shifting her gaze to the ground.
“I know.” Her voice broke on the last word, a lump rising in her throat.
Bob’s voice seemed to soften a little, saying, “Look...I’m just trying to-”
“I know, you’re looking out for your friend,” Courtney said tiredly, still avoiding his knowing brown eyes. Tears stung in her own eyes. “I get it.”
“No. I’m looking out for my friends.”
At that, Courtney looked up at him, surprised.
“You’re my friend too,” he continued. “And Adore’s my friend. And I just don’t want anyone to get hurt.”
Courtney bit her lip, nodding. “Me neither,” she managed to whisper, before a single tear began to burn its way down her cheek. Bob pulled her in for a hug.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-”
“I know.” Courtney sniffled against his shoulder. “You’re a good husband.”
“Oh yeah? Then why aren’t you in the kitchen making me some pie?”
Courtney laughed, parting from him with a good-natured shove.
“You okay?”
She nodded. “I really do love him, you know.”
“Yeah. Okay.” He smiled ruefully. “Things can’t ever be easy, huh?”
“No, I guess not.”
He pressed one last fatherly kiss to her forehead before leaving to join his own lunch group. Courtney took a moment more to collect herself, then walked back to the tree.
“What was that all about?” Pearl asked. “Everything okay?”
“Yeah, just some stuff about the play.”
“I’m so excited to see this play, it’s all you guys talk about,” Tati said.
“Yeah, better live up to the hype,” Trinity warned.
“Oh, it will,” Adore promised her with a charming grin. “We’re fucking amazing.”
“Damn right it will. Although, let’s be honest, I would have been a much better Percy than Bob,” said Willam.
“Ehhh…” Courtney grimaced.
“Fuck you, cheerleader!” Willam exclaimed, chucking an orange slice at her face.
“No I mean, you’d have been great in the campy parts, but the sincere romantic stuff? Not so much.”
“Yeah, remember last year? You two were the least believable teen romance ever,” Adore laughed, and Courtney joined in, nodding.
“Exactly.”
“Are you saying I can’t play it straight?” Willam looked deeply offended.
“Yeah, that’s exactly what we’re saying,” Adore told him.
“Oh yeah? Well, watch this…Come here, Virginia.” He grabbed Tati, who immediately squirmed away.
“Don’t touch me,” she said, pushing him onto the grass.
“Sorry.”
“See? A straight guy wouldn’t have listened,” Violet commented drily, making all of them crack up.

Jan 21st, Thursday 23:44
He felt his eyes bruning as he watched the game get closed by Lucas beside him.
It was late and for the last hours they had been constantly talking.
Right after dinner with Kes and Isa, to talk about the weekend and them arriving tomorrow. Lucas was already looking forward to have his friends over. They would visit Antwerp for the first time, unfortunately inmidst the pandemic, which therefore menat that they’d only get to see the trip from the station to Jens’s place. Maybe another time, it would be a little more exciting.
Still, the sole fact that Lucas could hug his best friends tomorrow, was enough to forget about the rest.
And then at around nine the two both had bid their goodbye and switched towards the large group chat on discord, for some good ol’ Among Us.
Jens had been a bit wary as Lotte had joined them to talk to Isa, but fallen asleep halfway through the conversation. She had rested her head in his lap, as she had made herself comfortable. His blanket covered her whole and her breathing was even. He had brushed through her her for a while until he was with his friends.
Because it was loud and chaotic and constant talking and yelling over each other, especially as they were busy playing. Jens had been worried that it would wake his little sister. But she seemed to really be out of it. Hadn’t even moved, when Sander had screamed at Milan’s betrayal two games in.
Amber had voiced her adoration at the sight of the´m three huddled together on Jens’s bed. He silently had agreed to the serene bliss that showed on the little video on the screen in call.
With Lotte sleeping on one side, her head buried on his stretched out legs and Lucas to his left, pressed against Jens, it really looked domestic. The younger boy’s head fell onto his shoulder every time that Jens was taking control of the player. They were too many for the lobby anyway, so they had decided to switch back and forth between games at the start.
However, as the energy had subsideded and a pleseant weariness had made them all agree to stop for tonight, the group was still in call for a little while, just talking, checking their phones. Some already ready to go.
„Guys? Do you have like a minute left?“ Jens voiced, with Lucas turning around in curiousity. The same one that was instantly displayed by all of his friends given him their full attention. It was a bit fightening to suddenly be faced by complete silence. „I just wanted to tell you something real quick.“
Like whiplash, Jens was quickly swamped by everyone giving him words of encouragment to continue. It was hard to distinguish between the voices cracking over the speaker.
„Alright.“
„Of course.“
„Take your time.“
„What’s up, Bro? Spill.“ That last one, definitely had been Moyo.
„So. I know that I had been really distant, especially over the last couple of weeks. And thank you so much for sticking with me. I know I can be a dick. I didn’t mean to ghost you all. I just needed time to figure myself out.“
Sander looked as if he wanted to say something, but Jens just went on. He couldn’t stop here, or he would decide to defer this onto some later date. But he had promised Lucas to change, and this would be one of the steps to take.
In all honesty his friends at least deserved that.
„This really means a lot to me. Especially since I havent really talked about everything that is going on. I promise you to do that, not today though. I hope you won’t be mad. But uhm, I actually meant it in the cabin, when I said that I will raise Lotte on my own.“ Jens paused for a second, his gaze dropping to the sleeping figure in his lap. He knew he had made the right desicion back in december. „So Today I got my court date to see the judge, who will hopefully grant me the complete guardianship over her. And I‘m really nervous.“ Jens ended and exhaled. He said nervous and it was the truth. On one hadn how his friends would react and if they would accept it.
It certainly would complicate future plans. He couldn’t just spend a couple of weeks with them on trips, or go to spontaneous parties, or stay out after school, just because he felt like it. He knew it would change their dynamic. And he was afraid that he would loose his friends along the way.
„Wait, what? Why didn’t you tell me earlier?“ Lucas asked, simultaneously confused and surprised. It took Jens a solid minute to figure out the reason. Right, he hadn’t told the younger boy about it yet.
„Because we were busy with other stuff.“
He realised to late, that this could be falsely construed. The whole voice chat was already in a struggle of wheezes and laughs as Jens quickly tried to take control back. „Calm the fuck down. With dinner. Jesus. Honestly. It was dinner preperation.“
„Yea. Only work and definitely no time for dick with this one.“ Lucas added unhelpful to the situation. It was a clear reference to the song they had listened to. The one that anybody else obviously haden’t and therefore could only worsen the glee in their eyes. There were high screeches and gasping lungs fighting for dominance on speaker.
Lotte briefly shifted, but nothing else.
Jens watched and waited. He could see Amber’s and Moyo’s wide eyes, while Milan, Jana and Robbe were clutching their stomachs. Sander only shook his head in feigned dissapointment as he grinned.
„Alright. Glad you all are having a great time.“ Jens pouted, despite the amused smile that gave him away.
„Sorry.“ Milan said, the laughs finally started to abate, only the occasional giggle slipped up.
„When’s the date?“ Yasmina chimed in. An angel, if anyone would have asked Jens. Everyone’s attention swiftly back on Jens, who pulled his phone out to check the mail once more. He definitely should write it down somewhere.
„On the nineteenth of February. So a little under a month. Alex, our lawyer, tried to get one as soon as possible, because of the urgency with my mom. But yeah. That’s not that far from now, I guess.“
„Do you know, if it will be a hard to win?“ That was Zoe , Senne next to her, both rather calm inmidst the chaos his other firends displayed. He always felt a little like talking to parents, when they looked at him like this in unison.
„I don’t think so. We had all other potential adults sign a waiver and I’m eighteen. The only uncertainty could be financials, but that is unlikely. I have the house and inheritance and my father’s allowence. Still, it could go wrong.“
That’s what caused his nervosity in the first place, the sheer possibility that something could take Lotte away from him.
„No, it will be fine. I’m pretty sure. You have always been great with Lotte.“ Robbe stated acsolutely assured of his words, while Jana nodded in agreement in the video next to him.
Jens felt his heart ease up from tension. He was so thankful for his friends. Most of all Robbe. How had he deserved to find his best friend and keep him over all these years?
Even if everyone would leave at some point, included Lucas or anyone who would follow, Jens was frighteningly sure, that Robbe and him would stick together til the end. He couldn’t even place the reason for his strong belief. His best firend has just always been there next to him. The one constant in his life, since they met in first grade.
„Robbe?“
„Yes?“
„I love you.“
Jens watched with great joy the face of his best friend, that brightened up into the brilliant smile that always lifted Jens up as well.
„Bro!“ Aaron declared, immediately accompanied by a stunning choir of awws and oows.
Lucas laughed next to him, his head resting again on Jens’s shoulder. He loved the weight. It meant that he wasn’t alone.
„I love you too.“ Robbe replied, still cheerful and grinning, yet certainly confused at the out-of-the-blue confession. Nonetheless both their declarations absolutely genuine in intent. Jens pondered if he ever had said these words on their own, and infront of others on top of it. But he just had felt right to say them out loud.
„Okay. Good night, everyone. Thanks for staying.“
„JENS! NO! You ca“
The audio of Luca screaming into her mic cut off, as Jens hit the red button to end the call. Quite pleased with himself. He knew that his friends weren’t satisfied with him just leaving. But it just was too funnny not to.
„So what do we do now with her?“ Jens said, pushing the laptop away, before lokking down at Lotte.
They settled on letting her sleep with them instead after Jens had suggested to carry her over. But of course Lotte had woken up from this and not the shouting voices minutes before. She had complained until Jens had told her that she could stay, to which she had asked for a goodnight kiss by both of them, before she sprawled herself across Jens’s side of the bed.
Lotte was back asleep not a minute later.
And though Jens rather would have had liked Lucas and him alone on their first night together after a week, he guessed that that would be some unfortunate part of his life now. He had said that out loud. And Lucas had only laughed on his way out to the bathroom, followed by Jens’s grumbling voice.
„Oh shut up. As if you hadn’t thought the same.“

Riding High Ch1: Jodhpurs and Jeans
Tumblr media
Chapter Summary: Frank Adler is a single man in his early 30s, simply doing his best to raise his genius niece Mary. After a passing comment from his well-meaning neighbour, land-lady and friend, he decides that before he enrols her into school she needs to learn some social skills and pick up a hobby to help her interact with kids her own age.
Felicity (Fliss) Gallagher is a single woman in her early 30s. An British Olympic Gold Medal winning Showjumper who was forced into early retirement due to a nasty accident, she’s now settled in South Pasadena running Sandybrook Stables, an Equestrian Centre which provide both boarding and teaching services.
Mary decides she wants to learn how to ride… meaning the two of them meet for the first time
Chapter Warnings: Bad Language words.
Tagging all my SSB/CSI readers…if you want in or off the list PLEASE just tell me
As always I’m a ho for a REBLOG and COMMENT!
And yes, the woman in the photos in the cover banner on and with the Chestnut is me and my wonderful, wonderful old girl who I lost 2 years ago…

August 2017
“I’m holding you solely responsible for this.” Frank short Roberta a glare as Mary bounced over to the truck, her blonde hair swinging slightly as she skipped.
“Because a horse might step on him.” Frank said, before he paused. “Actually, shall we take him?” Mary narrowed her eyes at him “That’s mean.” He chuckled, ruffled her hair and started up the truck.
******
“Ok, now soften your outside hand…” Fliss called out across the paddock, as the woman riding the tall, bay warmblood circled her “Yeah, you feel that.
Ever since Lucy had brought Jensen out of his stable, Fliss could see the horse was in one of his awkward moods so she’d had to switch out her plan a little.
He was dressed simply in a pair of jeans and a white T-shirt which perfectly accentuated his toned upper body.
“Frank, please.” “Nice to meet you.” Fliss smiled before turning to Mary “And what can I call you Miss?” “Mary.” she said, looking up “Are all these horses yours?”
Fliss chuckled. “No not all of them. 9 belong to me. 3 are my personal ones, then I have 6 that work in the riding school and the other 6 are boarders.” “Oh.” she said, looking around. “So which one can I ride.” “Mary…” Frank chastised her softly as he looked down at her, before glancing back at Fliss “Sorry, she’s excited.” Fliss laughed and shook her head “It’s fine, I love to see it.”
She turned to Mary and then in an exaggerated whisper so that Frank could here said “I’ll let you into a secret, I always put the new kids on Monty because he’s awesome and looks after everyone…and he especially likes girls.
“Monty, meet Mary…” she said with a smile as Mary gently reached up to stroke the pony’s soft nose.
“He’s really pretty.” Mary said, appraisingly.
“I get it a lot.” he said, waving her apology away “But I am her legal guardian so…”
Fliss nodded, studying him for a moment.
“It’s called grooming.” Fliss explained “So he is mimicking what you’re doing to him to me, see? It’s how they show affection in the wild. Sometimes they can get a bit carried away and they nip but they don’t mean to be nasty or bite.”
She looked over to Frank, keeping one eye on the small girl who was engrossed in petting Monty and looked at him “So, are you just after her learning to ride then or…” Frank nodded “It’s a long story but, she needs a hobby and this was the only thing that seemed to get her excited. Of course it would be the one that will milk me dry…” he said, raising his voice a little.
“Spend less money on beer when you go out tonight” she shot back, and Fliss gave a loud bark of a laugh as Frank, shook his head.
“See what I gotta put up with?” he snorted.
“You should talk to my dad about it.” she laughed “I bled him dry due to horses as a kid, especially when I was up and down the UK competing!” “I was gonna say your accent isn’t local.” he said, smiling.
“Neither is yours.” she shot back “New England?” He cocked his head, momentarily surprised. He didn’t think his accent was that strong considering.
“Boston.” he nodded, “But I aint lived there in a while.” “I lived in Concorde” she explained, noticing his puzzled glance
“Huh, no kidding.” he smiled “Cambridge.” “Nice state.” Fliss smiled “I loved it.”
“What made you end up here?”
Fliss hesitated for a while. “Erm..” “Sorry, you don’t need to explain, I was just a little curious.” “No, it’s fine just a long and complicated story.” Fliss said, scratching her temple “The abridged version is my marriage broke down and my mum and dad retired out here so I joined them.” She was avoiding his eyes slightly. Frank was smart enough to realise there was slightly more to it than that but he was tactful enough not to press. Besides, it was really none of his business.
“How about you? What you running from?” “What makes you think I’m running from anything?” he asked.
“Yeah, they’re not working again today.” Fliss said, “But take them one at a time. Bolt’s taking to being a bit bargey. If he starts wrap the lead-rope round his nose.” “Will do.” “Thanks Jo.” she smiled, and they continued walking.
“What’s bargey?” Mary asked.
“Pushy.” Frank looked at her “Bossy.” “Like you?” Frank shot her a look and saw Fliss smiling to herself as she overheard.
“Or it could mean pain in the ass like you.” he said.
The frame was split into 2. On the right hand side was a photo of Fliss dressed in competition gear, navy jacket, red piping, white jodhs and a navy hat. She had a smile on her face that was literally ear to ear and round her neck sat the gold medal which was displayed in the left of the frame.
“London 2012…” Mary read the small plaque at the bottom “Frank, look…” “I can see.” he said, surprise evident in his tone. He looked at the woman “You were in the Olympics?” “Yeah.” she smiled “Only one though. Trained for years to get there…”
“Why only one?” Mary looked at her.
“Mary.” Frank groaned “Stop being nosey.” “It’s ok.” Fliss chuckled “A few months later at the World Championships I had a nasty accident. I damaged my back and it took me nearly 6 months to recover. Sadly I lost my place on the team.” “Oh, that’s sad.” Mary looked at her.
“It’s a dog eat dog world kid.” Fliss shrugged “Not all bad though, I got into the training side of things which was great. Just didn’t work out. There was a moments pause and Fliss replaced the photo and turned to Frank “Can I get you anything to drink?” “No, I’m good thanks.” he smiled.
“But I can give you those to take home, you can bring them with you when you come back.”  she said, reaching into her desk drawer.
Group lessons are $20 for 45 minutes and individual lessons are $30 for 30.
Fliss smiled “I’ve only been 6 months or so now, but I’m planning on starting up a few Own a Pony days where the kids can come down and learn how to care for the horses as well as just ride.
“That’s really it.” Fliss said, as she completed her mental check list “So all that’s left is to either book you in or you can call me…” “Please Frank!” Mary looked at him “Can we book?” Frank nodded “If you want.” “I do…” “Ok…what availability do you have?” Fliss opened the laptop and entered the diary and looked for a free spot.” “Does Wednesday at 1 suit?” she offered “I know once school starts you’ll probably want a weekend or evening but. whilst it’s the holidays does that work?”
And that reminds me, I haven’t seen Thor in a while…”
“Thor?” Mary looked at her
“Yeah, my dog…” she stood up and opened the office door, giving a sharp whistle.
“He wants a belly rub.” Fliss said, and Mary dropped to her knees to give the dog a tickle. His tail began to wag furiously on the floor and Mary laughed.
Frank watched the girl, smiling. He loved seeing her like this. She was so grown up and serious half the time, he yearned to see her acting like a normal 7 year old.
“Do you wanna go to the store or not?” Frank shot her a look. “Ok.” she said, jumping up and wiping dusting off her knees.
Fliss walked them to the truck which was parked in the car park and her eyes flew over to her horse wagon, a small 3.5 tonne box. Frank noticed her looking before she turned back to him.
“Yours?” he asked.
I just…well she…” “Oh,God,no…” Frank stuttered, hastily shaking his head. “It’s just…well she’s never usually that affectionate with strangers.
Have a good day Mr Adler…” “Frank…” “Frank.” she corrected herself with another gorgeous smile “I’ll see you Wednesday.” With another  nod he walked to the truck and Fliss turned and headed back to the yard.
He climbed in and turned to Mary who was looking at him, smirking in a smug way that was well beyond her 7 years.
“I was curious ok?” Frank said “And you asked me to!” “She’s an Olympic Gold medallist.” Mary chanted, draping herself over the arm of the sofa, head hanging, hair brushing the floor “At London 2012 but then she had an accident in the World Championships later that year and she broke 2 vertebrae…she didn’t compete again. And she was married to a guy called John. He was on the US Equestrian team but they’re divorced now. He’s in prison…but Frank didn’t tell me why.” “Because it’s none of your business, and you don’t mention it to her.” Frank said sternly, cutting her off.
Roberta looked at him curiously “But you’re not interested in her. At all.” “Like I said, curious.” he shrugged “Especially if she’s gonna be teaching Mary.”
“Mmmhmmm.” Roberta dropped her hands to her hips “Whatever you say honey…” Frank sighed and then looked at Mary. “Be good.” “I will, see you in the morning…”
He nodded and then headed out. It was a pleasant evening, the heat of the day had died down to an acceptable level and the 10 minute walk down to the small strip of bars wasn’t as sticky as normal. It passed fairly quickly, he was lost in thought about the woman he had met before. It had made for surprising reading, a child star on the circuit the accident had cruelly robbed her of a future in the sport 5 years ago, and from the sounds of it her ass-hat ex-husband had stolen 3 years of her life too.
Frank grinned up at Fliss “Just short of a hundred.
“Another beer please pal.” he said, waving his empty bottle.
“Oh Liss…”
“I’m ok…” she said, taking a breath
Her mother looked at her again, and Fliss knew she was busted. “I was just…having a flash back that’s all.”
“He’s not here.” Verity dropped her voice “That fucker is where he belongs, behind bars and he won’t be bothering you again. Me and your dad promised you that…and we meant it.”
“I know, honestly I’m fine…” Fliss assured her mum who leaned over and gave her temple a soft kiss.
Fliss smiled back and shooting one last glance at Frank, who has his back to the table as he continued his reading, she turned to the women and threw herself into the conversation
