[ ALEX WOLFF. CIS MALE. HE/HIM. ] [ CHAPLIN COWEN ] is a [ TWENTY-ONE ] year old [ COUNSELOR ] at camp reviere. [ HE ] makes me think of [ INAPPROPRIATE LAUGHTER, HOLDING YOUR BREATH, SPRING BREATHING LIFE BACK INTO NATURE, THE DEFLOWERING OF MARY SHELLEY, HOPING FOR A NIGHTMARE ]. their favorite horror movie is [ THE OMEN ] and they remind me of [ JOSH WASHINGTON ].
Tumblr media
i’m late to the party but i’m here <3
i think the first step to understanding chaplin is getting his character inspiration. so, besides josh washington he’s also inspired by allie pressman, vada sultenfuss, and rodrick heffley.... so... you know
there’s a certain level of intuition and connection with the universe that comes from being a twin. at least, that’s what chaplin has always read and heard. being the son of a psychic, he’s been waiting patiently his entire life to discover his “gift”. so far, the moment of realization has yet to come
he always easily fit into whatever social structure he entered. he was the fun one, the easygoing guy who could make a joke out of anything. no one would guess that deep down, there was this yearning to be special. in any normal person’s eyes, he was already special. in his mother’s, he was just chaplin.
his contributions to his mother’s readings were less interesting than rissa’s, at least, that’s what he tells people who ask. he’d stand outside the window, providing sound effects and appropriate scares. it was boring work, but he made everything he did fun.
it was when he was twelve that chaplin accepted he had no gift, and started to hyper focus on the concept of death. he’d see how long he could stay underwater at the creek near his home, test the strength of his lungs until they were burning with need for air. he’d poke roadkill with sticks, spend all his time in graveyards talking and hoping for something to talk back.
going into high school, chaplin made a name for himself as one of the first who popularized gothic fashion in the boring white halls. his style, his class clown reputation, and the company he surrounded himself with provided just enough intrigue for everyone to agree: chaplin was the coolest kid in school. and it felt good, being special somewhere. he found himself getting a bit more selfish with it, hardly bothering to up rissa’s social status as well. she had the gift, after all.
chaplin was seventeen when he learned about his past life. his family had ties to all the nearby psychics, naturally, and in pursuit of some sort of revelation he’d visit them regularly. picture this: he’s sitting across from a 70-something year old woman, told that he was married to the town harlot. he’s listening with rapt attention, then suddenly breaks out into a shit eating grin “is she hot?”
he started seeing the past life psychic weekly, sometimes skipping school to drive out of town and see her. the romantic in chaplin was eager to learn more about his wife, and it was with every new fact he learned about her that he grew determined to find her. he’s certain that even in her new form, wherever she may be, they’ll find their way back to one another.
also during high school is when he started his band, and five years later it’s still going strong. lovedrunk started out in hudson greyback’s garage, and has since moved practice to the local cemetery. he never thought much about life after high school until lovedrunk formed, and now he’s certain he’d be content staying in his hometown forever if it means making music
THE UPTURNED PALM
LIFE LINE (ABSENT): sort of an opposites attract friendship. they’re all nerves and anxiety, and chaplin is all jokes and easygoing approaches to life. he doesn’t particularly worry about much, but sometimes he’ll adopt their fears unconsciously, not that he’d ever say. he’s here to soothe it, after all, not make it worse.
LIFE LINE (BRANCHED): he’s a waste of energy. they started off strong the summer before, closer than ever, but chaplin always manages to fuck things up. he’s insensitive, sometimes downright rude, and they’re getting tired of trying to repair their relationship with him.
HEART LINE (CHAINED): he’s there to fill a void, and he does it well. this is your typical friends with benefits situation, except one benefits more than the other for sure. he doesn’t fully understand their feelings of loneliness or whatever’s going on in their life, but he’s happy to provide a distraction.
HEART LINE (CURVED): his soulmate. at least, as he thinks. from the moment he met this person, chaplin was sure that in their past life, they were his wife that he’s spent years learning about. the mannerisms, the speech patterns, they’re all the same. the person likely has no interest and has to brush him off often enough, but he still tries,
HEAD LINE (HOOKED): someone just as fucked up as him. between the two of them, there’s very little empathy, but very much mischief. in short, a prank companion. whenever anyone sees these two together, they know there isn’t anything good to come.
HEAD LINE (STRAIGHT): they’re logical, organized, and completely done with his shit from the moment they meet. he has no greater joy than annoying them, being the one flaw in their spotless existence.

Kashmir Pt.1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As usual forever editing~.
Enjoy~!
...
Wandering blithely through his castle Robert sighed. It was now just past teatime & Lord Kidderminster had exhausted just about every form of entertainment that he could think to occupy himself, his mind or his time with. His affairs were all but done for the day and yet the day itself was far from done. And since he had decided to extend his morning ride earlier that day, even that beloved pasttime was off the table for the time being.
He had spent the day with his old friend Jimmy, or as he was known in the public sphere Lord Heston of Middlesex. Yet the mercurial older gentleman was not much in the mood for sunny pleasantries - when was he ever~?! - certainly not after he & Robert took their conversation into the library where it was then cut short by the fellow Count picking up a hefty, rather ancient looking tome off of one shelf & becoming quickly invested. When Robert jokingly asked if Jimmy would like to be left alone with his "new precious little thing" he was surprised - only initially - to find that the answer was a yes. And so he left "Old Blackbeard" to his own ever mysterious devices.
Suffice to say that Lord Heston's company left a lot to be desired that day...
Gazing out his window for what felt like the umpteenth time that day, Robert was stunned to find that the light rain that had been falling for some time, had recently ceased, giving the surrounding fields an almost dreamy haze. Mystical. The light from the sun peeking through & refracting through the lingering haze, shattering into shards of color that reached out into the misty air.
Through the mists Robert saw movement by a nearby pond. Intruders! Hooligans! Drunkards! No... Wait... Women... Girls in fact!... Young girls at that!... Two of them... A blonde & a brunette... Both dressed in while brief slip dresses until all of a sudden one wasn't. "Oh!" Robert gasped at the sight. She slipped out of her slip dress, laying it on the grass nearby as she dipped into the pond squealing a bit at the cold & then motioning for her dark haired friend to do the same. Robert watched the scene with rapt attention unaware that his lips were parting with the rasped request. "Oh, please God, yes!"
Indeed, outside at the pond the young strawberry blonde Sibella or Sibby was indeed trying to get her young dark haired friend Charissa or Rissa to join her. "C'mon, Rissa!" She laughed, splashing about both to acclimate to the cold water & to tease her shyer friend. They had started the day in gauzy white dresses with crowns made of little pink and white flowers. Her dress had since been discarded after the freak midday shower, both of their flower crowns bleeding petals into their hair.
Rissa gazed warily at her bold young friend, now as naked as the day she was born. She folded her right arm across her midsection, hand braced against the crook of her elbow. "I don't know, Sibby... This is an awfully big place here... Whoever owns this place probably owns this little pond thing too. Get dressed. Maybe we should go?"
Sibby just scoffed." Oh my God! You're such a scaredy cat! You mean you don't know?"
"Know what?" Rissa gazed at Sibby in confusion, leading to another incredulous scoff from the older girl.
"This place is Wolverhampton Manor! A bit away from Wolverhampton true but it is so named due to that being a favored haunt of the owner of this manor, Count K also known as Count Robert Plant, Robert Anthony Plant Lord Kidderminster of Worcestershire. His dearest friends included a driver who came into a title from a distant relative Count John Henry Bonham, Lord Clewer of Berkshire. And the most notorious rakehell of his day Count James Patrick Page Lord Heston of Middlesex."
The list of names and titles and places made Rissa's head spin, prompting her to exclaim with an incredulous laugh. "How do you know these things?!"
Sibby just shrugged. "I read about it in study hall once. Fastest I've ever gone through a history book in my life! Shame they're all gone now. From what I've heard they were gorgeous men the lot of them. But a lot of rumors surround them all. Things you wouldn't believe!"
"I bet." Rissa laughed. "What else could get you to read a history book so fast?"
This made Sibby laugh. "Yeah. Well, c'mon! You don't even have to undress if you don't want to. Just hop in!"
"Oh, all right!" Rissa sighed through her laughter. At last the ever irrepressible Sibby had won!
At last Rissa dipped into the pond, inching in until it was at chest height, the same as dear Sibby. She shivered intermittently as she acclimated to the chilly water herself before casting a quick look at her surroundings, musing with a wry grin that she hoped veiled her still frazzled nerves. "I could swear I saw the curtains up in the manor shift a little. In a room or two. Not sure."
Sibby just grinned. "You just hit one of the rumors I've heard on the head!"
"What?" Rissa hushed.
"Well..." Sibby looked around herself as if she were sharing a secret in a crowded room & not the open field bereft of anyone but them that they were in. She then leant in & spoke also in a hush, this one a bit more excited. "They say that the Counts were all part of this thing called the Order of Kashmir..."
...
Back in the library Jimmy was laid down on the exquisite bearskin rug, the heavy, cracked, leather-bound volume beside him. His eyes were closed, all of his senses were focused on the room around him.
Shifting was a difficult skill to master, even with his centuries of experience in magick, & required full concentration, & full synchronisation with the magician’s environment. One had to taste, scent, touch, see & hear the magick in the air. See with the heart & the mind, see with internal eyes. The desired shape must appear as real before the magician as his own hands before his own eyes.
It was fiercely complicated, & shifting into the Hermit came with its own set of dangers. The spirit of the Hermit was notoriously possessive of magicians & querents, & if not approached respectfully, humbly, or honestly, could be killed trying to divine his wisdom.
He could feel the shift beginning, the air taking in true texture around him, wrapping him in, binding the consciousness of Lord Heston in place, allowing the rest of him to merge with the Hermit, physically & mentally.
When he next opened his eyes, he could feel the changes, the new form. The Hermit craved sunlight, needing to regenerate his form, leading him to the ceiling-length window, surveying the now-damp meadows sparkling in the sunlight.
A darting flash near the pond, a subsequent splash drew their eye. Two young ladies splashing about in the sun-warming water, their giggles echoing even to them in the library.
Golden faerie maidens. Theirs the purest of magicks, the strongest potential of the senses.
Both of them - the Hermit & Lord Heston - felt deep stirrings at the sight of the splashing maids, one stirring at the magickal pull of the girls, the other stirring at the more erotic potential of such youth & beauty.
...
Robert could hardly tear himself away from the window in his room as he watched the girls frolic & splash about. Both of them were finally in the water, laughing & talking, though he could not quite make out what was being said. Both young ladies were, he could tell, in the ripeness of health & youth, all curves & soft skin, reminding him of his own glowing memories of springtime swims in the pond, as well as the interludes that often followed such swims in later years.
He licked at his dry lips, considering how he might entice them to explore the grounds further. He wondered if they’d discovered his apple & lemon orchards yet... Both were in full bloom, both his apples & lemons deliciously ripe & sweet... The scents were legendary for perfuming the countryside in high spring & summer - if the girls had not found it, he knew they surely would soon. Perhaps then, he might introduce himself to them...
...
"Order of Kashmir?" Came the reply from Rissa along with another curious look.
"Yes. They called it the Order of Kashmir. A list of nobility at the time - a relatively small list but a list no less - all were said to have joined this secret order that gave them powers or something. Vampires. Immortal spirits or the like. They say people still spot them around the grounds and areas of their old Manors, Castles & Haunts. All around the world there are sightings of the Counts and others said to be in the Order. Kashmirites some call them. Kashmirite Sightings. They're in all the papers. Especially gossip rags though."
"The same ones that talk of UFOs, Big Foot & the Loch Ness Monster?" Charissa snickered.
"Seriously! Though I have to admit after reading about the Order I was kind of hoping that in making this trip that we could maybe have a chance at catching... At finding... At sighting a few Kashmirites... Look!" She pulled a scrap of paper from her pocketbook nearby. It had a picture - a collage - of the Kashmirites. Messrs. Lords. Page. Plant. Bonham. Jones. Coverdale. Beck. The list went on. Sibby then showed Charissa her latest books that she had been carrying on the subject. One was a rundown on the lives of the mysterious Lords. The other was on the Order of the Kashmir as a whole & Kashmirites as a subject. Charissa was nothing less than stunned. "Well! I'll be darned!"
"Mmm-hmm..." Sibby nodded. "They say the ringleader of sorts or at least the one the deepest into the order, higher up in the ranks or something, was Rakehell Page. He was said to be like a wizard or something!"
Charissa couldn't help but laugh at this now, prompting Sibby's squealed reply. "I'm serious! Seriously! Seriously, Rissa! He--..."
Whatever her next words were to be as a loud clap of thunder sounded, emanating seemingly from above the Manor as another sheet of rain began to fall over the grounds. This prompted the two young girls to shriek & scurry to climb out of the pond. Sibby hurried into her dress. Charissa helped Sibby gather her books. Sibby in return helped Rissa out of her dress so the two of them could wring it out, where she then began to help her friend back into it. She had only barely managed to get the dress to cover the peaks of Charissa's breasts when...
Just then...
A male voice called out to them...
"Well, well, well... What's all this now?..."
The two girls whipped their heads in the direction of the voice where they were met by the sight of a tall, regal looking gentleman all flowing blonde curls, turquoise jewelry & long flowing cape draped over his shoulders. Steel blue eyes pierced them both as dimples popped both near the corners of his upwardly curving mouth & in the center of his chin as he teased them with a wry Cheshire Cat grin. "To what do I owe this extreme pleasure?" His eyes raked over their bodies with those words. Sibby's with her dress clinging to her in places & Rissa with hers hardly on, barely over her nipples revealing the expanse of creamy curved flesh below. This she remedied quickly, hurriedly taking over from Sibby & pulling her dress back down in a huff, face burning with the heat of both his gaze & her subsequent blush.
When the girls couldn't manage to do more in response to his question than gape, stammer & stumble over their words, a great many of which were "Um... Uh... Well... I... We... You see... I, uh--... Ahem..." He just chuckled, holding two other capes out to them. "Come now, loves. It's frightful out here." He crossed over & draped the rich, warm fabrics over their trembling forms as he draped an arm around each of them, leading them ahead towards the door. "Let's go inside & see if we can't get you warmed up."
The girls nodded shyly, not sure of what to do past that. But as they neared the door to the Manor, Rissa turned towards Sibby & hushed one word where only she could hear, motioning almost imperceptibly to the tall, striking, dimpled blonde gentleman in between them. "Nessie~..."
...
The storm had come again, in earnest this time, the thunder drowning out the pained gurgling scream from the library. Both the Hermit & Lord Heston had been stirred by the sight of the girls, Lord Heston the most, & had summarily lost control of the shift, causing a physically painful, albeit temporary, rending of the shared consciousness.
The Hermit retreated further inward to maintain balance, as Lord Heston gathered himself in kind, the pain fading, but the memory keen.
The brunette had been worth such a blow, however. Lush, sweet softness beneath such a delicate frock... the unexpected surprise of her innocent nakedness stirring Heston to half-hardness...
And the wretched timing of the lord of the manner! Scooping up both maidens in one fell swoop, undoubtedly promising them sweet porridge & hot tea, promising to dry their frocks at his fireside, as the three of them romped & frolicked in his bed. No doubt that by nightfall, Robert would have two new beauties to count among his wives & lovers, fully turned & waiting for their own feasts.
He would have damned The Hermit himself, had he been able to do so easily. No, he had chosen to take this form today, this hour, not knowing the girls had been on the estate. No, if he desired one, he & Robert would simply have to share. And indeed the shyer, dark-haired beauty already haunted their mind, awakened a delicious need in Heston’s entire being, & intrigued the Hermit’s sensitive intuition. Both of them desired to see the girl, & they would do so, whether Robert liked it or not.
...
Robert led the girls through the door & into the palatial manor which was lit by a litany of candles in in little holders tucked into nooks carved in the wall, chandeliers, candelabras and candlesticks everywhere. It gave the whole place a warm, inviting glow along with a warmth that was only amplified by the fire roaring in the fireplace. He had large, fluffy towels laid out for them of which he grabbed two, handing one to each girl. "Here you are, loves. Care for a spot of tea? Might help you warm up after getting caught in such a dreadful storm."
"Thank you." Came the girl's response in unison. Both were standing still gazing around at their environs in complete shock. Charissa was the first to move slightly, only to pat herself dry with the towel. A slight moan fell from her lips at the feel of the softness of the fabric against her skin, followed by another from Sibby when she did the same.
Robert couldn't help but to grin at that, dimples popping as he laughed. "Feelin better already, eh? Well come, sit." He removed his cloak as well as those of the ladies, chuckling as they promptly covered themselves with their towels, draping them over their shoulders & carefully perching on more towels laid out on a settee opposite him & his large stately chair. He went about pouring their tea to their specifications which they mumbled out while still in a state of shock about it all. It was all very innocent, their surroundings very comforting & their host was nothing if not charming but they still couldn't help but stare at him openly, try as they might to hide it. It led Robert to perk an eyebrow at the two maidens as he handed them their cups. "Hmmm? What? What is it? Is there something on my face? I certainly hope not?" He teased with a smile, feeling around his cheeks, patting them playfully.
"No!" Again the response came in unison. Before they traded off every few words. Sibby first. "No, it's... It's not that... It's... It's just..." And then Charissa. "...She thinks you look like someone... Someone quite familiar..."
"Oh?" Robert tilted his head. "Someone you know?" And then his eyes fell to the books clutched in their little hands. Ah-ha!
"I see... Interested in the Kashmirites are you? Is that how you found yourselves here? Seeking things related to the Order? Counts? Count Kidderminster? Lord Kidderminster and all?"
The replies were now mixed. Sibby was seemingly contrite, ashamed at her inquisitive nature, her nosiness. She dropped her head & nodded, admitting in a small voice. "Yes..." Charissa was nothing if not firm however, shaking her head. "No!" Then taking her contrite friend's admission into account she relayed the following to the now snickering blonde man. "She was. I just came as a tagalong so she wouldn't be alone."
Robert nodded thoughtfully, still with a trace of the teasing smirk on his lips. "I see. And would that be who you think I resemble by any chance, dears? Ah! Now that I think of it... I've never even asked your name! How dreadfully rude of me! Please forgive me... Praytell what are your names, ladies?"
He finally got his answer as to who the maidens - who he was fighting the urge to lick his lips as he took in the sight of them in those damp, filmy white frocks which clung to them just so - were. It was only fair that he caught their names since he was currently contemplating them as prospective bed partners. He got a "Charissa." From the shy brunette. And a "Sibella." From the curious blonde. The brunette growing curious herself, only enough to ask the obvious. "And you are~?..."
Robert couldn't help but grin at that. As his grin peaked, another clap of thunder sounded startling the two girls into jumping into each other's arms with a shriek. Robert felt his urges rising. That was the cause of the thunder. His deep seated urges were awakening to them. Senses on high. He hungered for them. Both of them. Their innocence. Their energy. Their pureness. Pure energy. Purity both of heart & of spirit. It intoxicated him. He swore he could smell it.
He got a scent of peaches and cherries from them. Mingled with that was a hint of apples and lemons. Signs that they belonged here? Were meant to be here? He wasn't exactly sure. He'd worry about that later. Maybe he'd ask Pagey later.
But wait...
PAGEY!...
The storm...
The way it started...
Grew so intense so soon...
Centering over his house...
His castle...
High above the one tower in the center...
The one that contained the library...
The library that contained Pagey & that one mysterious tome of his...
The library which was now emitting strange energies to him...
Pagey always had a strange energy to him...
But this...
This here...
This...
This was different...
This was...
This was...
This was like Pagey but on a whole new level!
He couldn't put his finger on it but the vibrations that Pagey was now emitting were strange... Too strange...
Even for him...
And it all started with the arrival of these girls...
Thinking back he realized the window from the library also faced out towards the pond that the girls had frolicked in...
Had Pagey seen them too?
He found himself laughing internally at the question. A bittersweet laugh that turned into a low growl of a single word spoken under his breath as he grit his teeth & balled his fist up, sending back an energy of his own, protective, defensive & yes even a bit greedy towards his newfound houseguests.
The word. Simple. It was a place.
A place that he wished a certain dark haired friend of his were still residing in just then. Preferably locked away in a different tower in a different castle at that. Or even dungeon knowing his reputation.
"Heston..."

In a Haze || Sophie & Loki
( @storiesofwildfire )
♔—- Loki sat silently for several long minutes. What could she say after a confession like that, truly? ‘I know how you feel?’ ‘I know how difficult this can be.’ ‘This is the worst part of being a survivor, trying to forget.’
Some of those options just seemed too cliche and the other options? Too dark, too heavy, but at the same time? So very true.
Her hands fell to her lap as one leg crossed over the other, the back of one palm resting in the other while she studied the lines of her upturned hand, anything to give her something to focus on that could keep her from looking at Sophie for just a little while longer. She couldn’t let the silence drag out forever, for fear of making the situation uncomfortable or making Sophie feel as if she’d said something wrong, but the suffering that the had been through… The suffering they both had been through…
“I know how you feel,” she finally uttered, mentally scolding herself for slipping up when she insisted that she wouldn’t say something so predictable. “What I mean to say is–” She sighed, her fingers knotting together so one of her thumbs could rub along the other. The Goddess did, however, finally lift her gaze to Sophie, so she could at least give her the decency of making eye contact with her while she elaborated.
“For as long as I can remember, I have lived under the thumb of someone else. I’ve been controlled and used for the gain of others. My talents have been used for wars and battles and atrocities that were not mine to commit. For hundreds of years, it was someone who was supposed to love me and then I traded in one tyrant for another one, one that seemed to care even less. I wasn’t a person to them, I was just an item, a weapon to utilize when convenient and lock away when useless. Made a pretty damned good scapegoat too.”
Another pause, though she forced herself to maintain eye contact with the woman across from her.
“So what I’m getting at is that I do know what it’s like, to spend so long living in a nightmare and then the days after it trying to pretend like it never happened. Some of the worst things that happened to me? I’ve repressed, I can’t remember them, am honestly afraid to, but I remember most of it and most days, I think it would be easier to just erase them from my mind.
“But then I realize… without those experiences, who would I be, exactly? Because I wouldn’t be me without the good and the bad of what I’ve experienced, you know? And I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s something. Sometimes something is enough to help ease the pain.”
Sophie had met Loki by chance.  She had not been seeking out the Goddess, and in fact, at first, Sophie had not believed Loki.  Never, in all her life, had she imagined that the Norse pantheon she had read about in the books Macsen and Tobias brought her was real.  At first, she grew angry, wondering how the Gods and Goddesses of the world could allow such bad things to happen, but Loki’s words had softened her anger. In part, Loki understood – knew the pain of feeling helpless to change the pain one saw in the world.
This was the foundation of their friendship.
Sophie was living on her own.  Cris was staying with Jacob a few blocks away.  It made for a nice walk to go visit them.  She hated being apart from her children, but mentally, she needed the time to find herself.  Becca and Rissa visited their brothers and Sophie as often as possible; so, it was not like Sophie was completely hands off from her role as a mother.
Still, the days of healing proved hard, and she spent years trying to bury her past.  Centuries of pain and torment.  And finally, there was a crack in that wall, words spilling forth to Loki, in an effort. to open up – to seek the other woman’s guidance.
The predictable response came, but Sophie didn’t sigh as she did with others.  Her life had given her the defense mechanism of reading body language, so she could see the struggle Loki was going through to find words.  It was enough to make her sit up more, wondering what the Goddess was about to say.  The words spoken next hit Sophie hard, deep within her, and it was impossible to keep the emotion from her eyes.
“Sometimes, I don’t know what’s real…and what’s an illusion.  A false memory placed there by Lucien.  I was never traded…but I was his prize.  Ever since I was a baby.  It was all I knew.  I’m scared of myself most days…and it’s why my children live elsewhere.  I want to learn myself…without his influence, because I’m terrified of scaring them.”  Sophie had never admitted that aloud until that moment, which made her stomach twist into knots wondering what Loki would think of her.
The last words from the Goddess’ lips brought a smile to Sophie’s face, though.  “So, it’s not strange to say I don’t regret what happen…because I have my children.  They are the best of me, and no matter how badly I wish their early lives had been different…I have them.”  Her eyes dropped down to her hands then.  “The three Lucien fathered…they have the best of him.  I know it probably sounds messed up to speak nicely of him, but I saw parts of him that no one saw.  Parts that weren’t always twisted.”  She looked back up then, meeting Loki’s eyes.  “You…you’ve…you are a good help to me.”

2016 Year end review: 5 years running (and better late than never).
Celebrating 5 years of the end of the year!!!
WOW, this is my 5th annual end of the year because Facebook’s end of the year thingy sucks so much it’s just better if I write my own and choose my own photos blog (working title). Seriously though, this is the 5th one I’m writing after starting in 2012.  Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that Facebook attempts to make us feel connected to our memories; I mean FB really is just one giant diary/scrapbook anyhow. While their attempts do get a little better each year, the end of the year never really full encompasses and includes all the memories I want it to. Well, that lead to me writing these in which I can kind of sum up my year as I want, group together some photos and tales from the last 12 months. I’ll mention as I always do, these are more for me than anyone else, but I do enjoy sharing it with all of you, my dear readers. As always, you can find the prior year end reviews here: 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. I hope you guys enjoy. Oh and if you don’t make the photo cut down below, don’t take it personal, I simply can’t squeeze everything and everyone in, it’s not meant to be a slight I just may not have a photo of you and I (it happens).
Now I know a lot of people had a rough year for one reason or another and cursed the number 2016 and because of that I feel bad saying the following:
I myself actually had a pretty good year.
I mean I went to more weddings than funerals for the first time in a few years, I never got below the “buffer” in my bank account. I was creative in a few different ways, I made some great new friends, traveled, and at the risk of taunting the universe, I personally had no great drama or issue or anything overly negative arise this past year, which I humbly thank God and Karma and existence in general for that fact. I hope we can keep that trend in 2017. By no means is anywhere near my 2012 declaration of not caring what happens next. Believe me, I CARE what happens next (trust me folks, don’t taunt the universe on that one). That said; let me share with you some of the highlights of my 2016.
First off is work. I just love working where I do and with the people I work with. Things are good, I’m happy. I make enough to enjoy my life the way I want too, they give me more than ample time off, it’s really close to home (I don’t even have to get on a highway and I can come home for lunch), my job is just good. I’m very comfortable here. This fall will be my fourth year here and I’m planning on staying with this company for a long time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m saying everyone should love your job, that’s just not going to happen, but if you don’t dread the alarm clock every morning, it creeps over in a positive way to the rest of your life.
Creatively, I spread myself thin on several projects as I always seem to do, even toyed with the idea of doing my own youtube channel show but then realized this exactly why I seem to never get anything done. So the top priority was my movie, which I’d say I got more done on it this year than any other year which is a major plus. We’re so close, I promise it’ll all end up being worth the ridiculous wait once it’s done. I did write a little more in the blog early in the year and re-read my book. Yup, long ago I wrote a novel but have never really done anything with it. So late in the year, I started re-reading it. It’s at the top of my list of things to work on in 2017. It needs some editing and to be flushed out a bit here and there, but it’s something that has been on the back burner and needs some attention. Heck, Stan Lee was in his 40 when he started all the Marvel characters we know and love and dominate the box office today. So why not me? I have also returned to working on my photography a little bit more often, which lead to meeting some nice new people along the way, which is always a plus.
Getting out seeing live music as much as I can is always important to me and this year was a pretty good year for it. I went to my fair share of concerts this year, both locally grown talent and more main stream. In the spring for my birthday I went and saw Nathaniel Ratcliff and the NightSweats with my gal pal Jenn M at the Paladium Ball room or Southside or whatever the hell its called now, over in Dallas. Such a great night, these guys put on a hell of a show. If you’re not familiar with their work, or even if you are but only the S.O.B. song, I recommend you give them a listen too. It was great to be in a crowd that was so into the show, everyone singing and dancing along with the songs, the age of the crowd was wonderful too, ranging from kids who couldn’t drink to people who could be my grandparent. The call for the band to come out for an encore was just fantastic, as the whole crowd chanting the course from SOB over and over for what seemed like forever before Mr. Ratcliff and his band gave in to our request (which I am sure they planned on doing regardless). They even brought out Fort Worth’s own Leon Bridges for the encore. That was a show and then some. I’d say it was the best show I saw this year, but I can’t because so many of them were so good! I caught Weezer and Panic at the Disco with my pals Britt and John in the summertime and well, it’s Weezer. Do I need say anything more? I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked Panic at the Disco and equally surprised at how many younger people left after Panic choosing not to stay for Weezer. Stupid fools, if they only knew. A big highlight of the whole year was taking my mom and sister to see “country” artist and native from the land down under Keith Urban this fall. I was familiar with some of Mr. Nicole Kidman’s works, but this was really all for my mom. HE’s her favorite. Never the less, I had a great time. The open act was a young women name Moren McMorick, Arlington’s own who’s clearly heading for big things. Wish I’d caught her at the Grease Monkey or Levitt when I would have had the chance. The main man of the night, Keith Urban, puts on a hell of a show. I earlier used quotations to describe him as a country artist, but that’s just not accurate to me. This guy is a bona-fide rock star. His music, his stage presence, his interaction with his fan, it was a fantastic show that I can’t simply narrow down as one genre. This dude is as cross genre as cross genre comes. OR maybe I just don’t have any idea what country music is since my childhood or listen to Alabama and Barbra Mandrel in my mother’s car. Again, truly a star of his craft. It was awesome to get to do something for my mom and share a concert with her. Strictly from a enjoying the musician point of view, my personal favorite show of the year was probably getting to see Glen Hansard at the Majestic in September. I’ve waiting 3 years for this guy to come thru town and there’s never been a show I had higher expectations for than this one . Man oh man he did not disappoint. My good friend MacKenzie took a night off from her family to join me and we both walked away floored by the Irish folk singer. He did 3 encores! Three! He played favorites of mine I’ve heard since I was introduced to him 3 years ago, stuff I had never heard of and the must hears from the film ONCE. He was fantastic engaging the crowd, sharing tales thru that thick Irish accent before or after each song, the Majestic was such a great setting to mark seeing off my bucket list. That’s not even half the shows I enjoyed this year. I saw Deep Blue Something for the first time in 20 years at Arlington’s Levitt Pavillion. Luke Wade also visited us again during the Day of Giving concert here in Arlington. I saw local favorites of mine Auntie Rissa and the Colonel, the Criminal Birds, my buddy KGs bands Henry the Archer and the always sweet styling of Standard Gazette. I was also introduced to the gothy good styling of Jessie Frye this year and lastly,  I can’t even begin to explain how happy I was to see favorite One Red Martian pay us a visit down here in the Lone Star State. You guys were severely missed.  Live music was oh so good for me in 2016, without question, the best it’s been in years.
I of course traveled. After my 2014 hiatus from traveling, I got back into it and 2015 and continued on in 2016. I really only took two legit vacations. The first being a week with my Godkids, which involved driving out to west Texas to get them and then bringing them back to Arlington for the week. They’re both practically teenagers now and I fear in the not so distant future I won’t be cool enough to hang out with them.  So trying to be cool Godfather that I like to think of myself as, we went to the National Video game museum up in Frisco. I highly recommend if you’re a video game nerd to check this out. It’s not really big, but it covers just about everything video game related ever made. Plus they had a Sega Dreamcast hooker up with Powerstone 2 in it which was a big plus for me.  Due to the kindness of some of my dear friends, we went swimming in pools not belonging to me. We took a train ride out to Dallas to visit the Perot museum and the Dallas Aquarium, both places I had never been so it was a treat for me too, went to downtown Fort Worth to see fireworks (as it was fourth of July week), went to the movies and one night just hung out and played board games and watched movies. Pretend parenting is so much fun. It’s the only time of the year that rivaled the Vegas trip. I do love those silly kiddos and I had such a great time with them, I hated having to let them go back home. I should also point out I acquired a third Godkid this year, but since she’s brand new I didn’t bring her along for the week, but she’s adorable! Photos are of course below.
I did leave the state too, FINALLY making it out to Vegas with my pals Keith, Scott, Woo and Kevin. Las Vegas did not disappoint in the least bit! I’d tell you more about it, but the whole “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…” just kidding. I didn’t get to see everything I wanted to and got sick one night, but still had a wonderful time! The plane ride over was memorable, though that story needs to stay quiet, but I will say the film “Me Earl and the Dying Girl” lies to you. Just know that it lies to you. We stayed at the New York, New York on the strip and personally love the place and our room. We went to multiple casinos and ate lots of breakfast buffets. Went to the shark reef at Mandalay Bay, which for me was a bucket list stop. I learned how to play baccarat at the Venetian and made some money (and that it’s perfectly acceptable to drink and gable at 9am on a Saturday) and then lost said money at black jack in the Luxor. We took a limo ride out to see the Hoover dam and asked to see Megatron (yes we were those guys). The food was fantastic, had a fantastic steak with shrimp and grits, a great deli in our hotel, and some fish and chips with Irish carbombs at an Irish restaurant. We instituted a roulette tradition, played in a small poker tourney, meet a wonderful group of UNLV grads, and had a drink in a bar that was -5 degrees. I absolutely loved Las Vegas and can’t wait to go again.
There were some sad moments too, but the it seemed like an unusually high number of unexpected celebrity passings. I can’t touch them all, but let me say the world seemed less magical once David Bowie left us and a little less funny now that Gene Wilder is gone. I was literally stunned and in disbelief when I learned Prince no longer walked among us. I openly wept before bed the day the great Carrie Fisher became one with the Force (no disrespect meant with that comment). Her passing was literally part of my childhood dying.
I can’t leave this blog on a down note though, so in case you didn’t notice, the Rangers has a pretty good season (happy note), and the Cowboys bounced back from the 4-12 disaster of last season. I can’t wait to see how deep this playoff run goes (happy note). Then a more personal high point, I met freaking Karen Gilliam! Amy Pond! A legit Dr. Who companion! That’s the first time I’ve gone to a convention like that and paid for a celebrity photo, but man it was so worth it (BIG happy note).
All in all, 2016 was a good year for me. I enjoyed and cherished all the people who were a part of it. I hope we all see a happy and healthy 2017. Here’s to another 5 years of end of the year blogs and God bless each and everyone one of you.
Much Love,
Big T
