a continuation of this wrt my thoughts brokeback: the musical:
- the addition of older!ennis was really, really touching. that actor had to be on the stage for like an 1h 30m and do nothing but react to what was going on bw all the other actors, and he did some damn good reacting. the moments where he was watching young!ennis and alma's altercations were particularly heartbreaking to me, bc all you saw on his face was the shame and regret he'd been carrying for the 39 yrs it had been since the time of the play's setting.
- in the script, the scene where lureen tells ennis about jack's accident goes like this
young!ennis is supposed to mutter, "They got him. Tire iron" under his breath after lureen tells him the flat tire story. In the play, though, it was actually older!ennis who says this, and lureen still asks, "What?" after hearing it. I think it was such a fascinating choice bc it shows that ennis has held onto the belief that jack was killed that entire time, and it helped emphasize like...how that pain, at the thought of his beloved jack being murdered, is always going to hurt ennis like a fresh wound. 2013!ennis' broken heart literally reaches back into the past enough for a 1983!lureen to react to it. chefs kiss, 10/10, bawling my eyes out as one does
- this isn't a crit unique to the stageshow but in the script, the whole dick-clipped scene from the SS is framed as jack telling that story from his childhood as a way to 'lighten the mood' after ennis tells jack about earl and rich. he starts out laughing about it, telling it like its the funniest thing in the whole world, but about 3/4ths of the way through, when he gets to the part about noticing that he was circumcised while his dad had not been, he starts crying and trying poorly to mask it. ik its canon to the SS that jack is sensitive about it, but i just think it needs be remarked that american males are actually circumcised very frequently, and have been throughout america's history that jack being circumcised wouldn't really be smth too abnormal, and thus smth that wouldn't like...realistically be that much of a big deal? unless you consider that maybe he hadn't seen all that many dicks in his life at the point he tells the story that it still makes him sore to think about it, but, well...i think we all know how unlikely that is, considering the fact that we know he got his kicks regularly while rodeoing. maybe i can understand how a kid would feel like he was disfigured compared to his dad, but idk...i have a feeling that all things considered jack got around quite a bit during his rodeo years, and so he would have likely come across a plethora of one night stands who were also circumsized like him, and he would have realized that he wasn't abnormal for being cut 'different.' idk. maybe it really was just too traumatic of an incident for him to forget so easily, and maybe he was just isolated for so long that he never got the chance to really see his peers' junks and that memory coupled w the revelation just stayed as a really sore spot for him over the years...who knows. i just think, realistically, jack being circumcised wouldn't make anyone bat an eye.
i havent had the chance to go over the whole printed vers of the play's script in detail yet, so there'll surely be more to come!
