*dusts off this blog*
a little while ago I was thinking of rewatching season one of musketeers. logically I know this could only end in heartbreak and renewed anger for what could have been for the characters I love while the other side of me reminded me how much I adored the first season of the show.
I’ve seen people talk about before how much this is much closer to the books or ‘historical accuracy’ etc. etc. and it’s not that season one didn’t have some rather terrible things happening but for the most part it was a much more enjoyable show in comparison to the graphic deaths and even beatings of women on the screen (which isn’t to say that season one didn’t to that as well, it just hardly had them last a full minute as we watched a man strangle a woman to death in his anger). because the show took a turn in season two, it needed to be darker, edgier, and prove that it belonged in that later time slot which no longer offered it as more family appropriate show.
it was for adults, that was the message, and fine I suppose, that happens. it’s just a bad state of media that ‘for adults’ and ‘darker, edgier’ is often akin to the rise of violence against women in a tv show. tragedy must occur there, after all it did in the books, right? why should I complain about it when it was honouring the source material even more? perhaps because I did want better than the source material, because in the first season it honoured parts of that while also making the show fun and the characters enjoyable to watch and get invested in. sure they got their happy ending in season three but there was no way for me to know that in season two and why invest in seeing characters broken down more and more for the ‘art’ of the show when there was no indication that it could get better in anyway.
I realize that I put to much in to the musketeers, it was a tiny show with a tiny fandom and I shouldn’t have been expecting it to remain enjoyable but damn if it didn’t have such potential to keep that up after season one. season one made me laugh in a time when I needed the idea of people staying together and enjoying each others company. so I could rewatch season one, bittersweet about it and live out the adventures the team could have had in my head. I’m just sad the writers never cared about the same way.

I’m not saying musketeers season one was perfect BUT.....the potential...the friendships...the ships....

I honestly tried to think of the most obscure possible pairing from relatively obscure television that I know we share just for the hilarity of it, but you know? I think i would like to hear your opinion on Constance/Porthos :D
Send me a ship and I'll give you my (brutally) honest opinion on it
somehow I knew you were gonna ask me about a musketeers one... let’s get old school
okay let’s not beat around the bush, I absolutely love Constance/Porthos as a ship which is hilarious if you look at the first edit I made for them and tagged it ‘not sure I ship this’ lol me, jokes on you.
I just think there’s a lot of common ground there between them since they’re both painfully clear how the world at the time works and sometimes works against them and also there’s a lot of respect. like when Constance was taken Porthos was one of the ones who said it wasn’t right they weren’t going to save her right away, and you can tell in that one scene he hated lying to her about what was going on. and also! he’s like the first to believe her about Fleur when that was going on. like!!!
I do think it’s a shame that Constance didn’t get to reciprocate that much like I’d have loved to see her get involved in the episode where Porthos is back in the Court of Miracles and then she’d also have met Flea I mean what - but as much as I don’t like to acknowledge things after season one in the season three finale when they say goodbye she kisses his cheek and gives him a soft look so it’s clear there’s at least some affection from her side too even if the show didn’t give me that much.
The point is:
Tumblr media
and also they should interact more and kiss

thoughts on: aramis (do i just want to hear you rant? yes. i'm sorry. ily. please go on, though 👀)
why would you do this to me hannah? don’t you value our friendship?
it has been....six years...am I over what they did with aramis? no. okay. let’s fucking do this.
you remember that joke that I made that I will never make a better one of “if a baby cries in the forest and aramis is around to hear it does that make it his?”  that’s a pretty good sum of my aramis feelings these days.
season one aramis? good, great, love him, narcissistic rogue of my heart. he was loyal and yeah flirted with people and that messed up a lot of things (adele! poor murdered adele!) but at least when she died he showed some remorse when he found out and that he may be at fault. granted it wasn’t much but at least it was there?? and he had great interactions with the others! there was good character flow and banter and everything was fun! I adored his devil may care attitude because still at the core of it was him caring about his friends and people around him. remember the episode with agnes? now there’s an episode with aramis and a baby that deserves praise. he prioritized the people around him during that, he made sure everyone was in the know of what was going on, he held a baby and didn’t think it was his.
and then episode 9 and 10 happened and I cringed because you fucking idiot sleeping with the queen. but okay, whatever, it happened, I had faith this wasn’t gonna screw up too much.
season two. oh season two. you came out back and dug me a grave and then piled all the characters into it with a baby on top. the stupid fucking baby arc. aramis became a total ass in this respect, he wasn’t a rogue and he wasn’t fun he was just a fucker whose actions screwed over all his friends and marguerite. playing her and sleeping with her to get access to anne and the baby was a douche move, getting her killed and showing nothing towards that was just being a dick, and then keeping all this a secret from the others despite that it’s ramped up the problems going on around you was awful.
aramis became the kind of character I absolutely hate. there was no fun banter anymore, there was no fun character anymore. there was a baby wailing and aramis was fucking up all over the place without any redeeming qualities. and instead of taking some responsibility he fucks off at the end to go be a priest. you got porthos shot! like three times! DON’T YOU CARE ABOUT PORTHOS?! REMEMBER THAT ARAMIS.
uuuuuuuuuuugh, this is so rage inducing to me hannah, they completely fucked over his character. aramis was a fuck boy sure but he wasn’t a heartless fuck boy, he cared about the people around him until season two and it was all about a baby and his need to get to the kid. shut up aramis you reap what you sow.
I mean I never even watched half of season three because I just couldn’t at that point, I saw the first three episodes and the last one and all I remember of that aramis was still rolling my eyes at him for being peak idiocy in the worst way. like you got me with the first half of the show, you failed me with the rest. and worse his storyline ate into porthos’ and we just got garbage for that.
in summation: there was never another season of musketeers, it ended at season one so I can get some fucking peace of mind and aramis was still a character I cared about.
send me asks that are like “thoughts on ______”

so musketeers is finally done. I’m free! and while this ride went way up in season one and down to the pits of the earth in season two and somewhere in between in season three all in all I was just so critical of the show because I had loved it and the characters so much.
this show still means a lot to me, it gave me the courage to speak in a fandom and make friends and I’ll always love that but on the flip side it pissed me off a hell of a lot. you win some you lose some, this is fandom after all.
at least at the end of the day I can officially say: that portance cheek kiss > all const*gnan scenes. their smiles were just too precious in that scene..

and while I’m over here complaining and being bitter, d’arty and ara-dick and ass-thos are still the worst.

I’m never going to love Athos or Aramis or d’Artagnan again like I did back in season one. I’ve accepted that fact, they and the fandom parts that sprung up from them got on my nerves one too many times.
But for fuck sake stop saying that Sylvie doesn’t “deserve” Athos. You didn’t say that when Ninon popped up and this relationship between them has a) gotten more screen time and b) gotten more development from that screen time and you can tell that they work well together both on and off the field. So stop making this about Mil*thos and crying that a WoC got in the way of your pairing and can’t she just ‘be on her on’ or whatever, it’s rare enough that Musketeers added a WoC as a regular let alone had her in a relationship with one of the main Musketeers so fine you don’t like it, but suck it and your racism against Sylvie up and shut up.

threefeettotheleft replied to your post “actually wait, I’m also amused they’re upset that she’s spending too...”
i finally enjoyed constagnan precisely because she got to have a life that didn't directly revolve around him.
I’ve been through too much in the fandom now (and bitterness of season 2) to ever really kinda like it like I did in season one but like..... you just can’t have characters that revolve solely around their romantic partner like that. sure they can be fully in love and all that but let them interact with others, it’s what makes for interesting developments. I’ve been so happy this season’s at least given me that.

actually wait, I’m also amused they’re upset that she’s spending too much time talking and interacting with the other characters like her interactions the past few seasons haven’t mostly been based around d’arty

I honest to god shouldn’t be but the bitter part inside of me is laughing that c*nstagnan fans are complaining of the lack of it in season three.

Imagine if they brought ninon in this episode instead and had her part of Slyvie's plotline.
I’d love that and her and Sylvie working together (and probably making fun of Athos together too) but I feel like those two would work really well together, they believe in a lot of the same things and while Ninon has had a different upbringing and been given wealth Sylvie knows about what it’s like on the other side and the reality of things that need to happen for equality. Pretty much I’d enjoy seeing them learning parts of these things from each other.
Lady friendship. Give it to me already.
