INTRODUCTION :

Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by abnormally low thyroid hormone production. There are many disorders that result in hypothyroidism. These disorders directly or indirectly involve the thyroid gland.

WHAT ARE THYROID HORMONES ?

Thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid gland. This gland is located in the lower part of the neck below the Adam’s apple. The gland wraps around the windpipe and is butterfly shaped.

The thyroid gland uses iodine for the production of thyroid hormones. The two most important thyroid hormones are thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) which accounts for 99% and 1% of thyroid hormones present in the blood respectively. However the hormone with the most biological activity is T3.Once released from the thyroid gland into the blood a large amount of T4 is converted to T3 – the active hormone that affects the metabolism of the cells.

CAUSES OF HYPOTHYROIDISM :

Hypothyroidism is a very common condition. It is estimated that 3% to 5% of the population has some form of hypothyroidism. The condition is more common in women than in men and its incidence increases with age.

Congenital hypothyroidism.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis – Hashimoto is an autoimmune disease in which body’s immune system inappropriately attacks the thyroid tissue. It is 5-10 times more common in women than in men.

Lymphocytic thyroiditis (which may occur after hyperthyroidism)

Thyroid destruction (from radioactive iodine or surgery)

Damage to the pituitary gland.

Radiation treatment.

Severe iodine deficiency.

Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland.

Medications that are used to treat an overactive thyroid(hyperthyroidism) may actually cause hypothyroidism.

 SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM :

Common symptoms are listed below :

Fatigue

Excessive sleepiness

Depression

Dry, coarse hair

Modest weight gain

Constipation

Cold intolerance

Dry skin

Muscle cramps

Decreased concentration

Increased cholesterol levels

Swelling of the legs

Vague aches and pain

As the disease becomes more severe there maybe symptoms like:

Puffiness around the eyes.

Slowing of the heart rate.

Drop in the body temperature.

Heart failure.

Myxedema coma

 DIAGNOSIS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM :

Medical and family history – You should tell your doctor about changes in your health that suggest that your body is slowing down, if you ever had thyroid surgery ,if you’ve ever had radiation therapy to treat cancer, if you’re taking any of the medication like lithium, thalidomide etc.

Physical exam – to look for changes like dry skin, swelling, slower reflexes and a slower heart rate.

Blood tests – TSH test, T4 test.

TREATMENT OF HYPO THYROIDISM :

Thyroxin is administered in all cases of hypothyroidism and is considered the mainstay therapy.

The usual dose in adults is 1.8ug/kg body weight.

Intravenous thyroxin is given in extremely severe hypothyroidism.

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

Kanchnaar guggul 500mg tab 3 times daily after meals.

Trikatu churna 2gm 2 times daily after meals

Vidanga powder 3gm 2 times af in morning and evening.

ok so here is mi background info: i got a super oily forehead and super dry cheeks (kms), and rly bad textured skin that ud esp notice on my forehead and nose (bumpy...not at all smooth...truly a nightmare) for the longest time i thought exfoliating would help and it does! it def does help, but i think maybe my skin has been also very dehydrated this whole time djdkdjkBDKDJ

morning routine: i use First Aid Beauty radiance pads, which are exfoliating pads soaked in toner. i do not wash my face in the morning!!!! only at night!! the latest thing thats been added to my routine, which i think has substantially helped the texture of my skin, is the honey grail face oil from Farmacy. my sister had 15% off at sephora so i took advantage NDNNDND. it smells like honey n is a v thick oil n i love ittt. immediately after (i got no time to waste lol) i use the ultra repair cream from First Aid Beauty! my sister had gotten me a FAB skincare kit for xmas so its mostly what im using rn ! also i have a uhhh i think it is an avocado eye cream from Kiehls? i think? its a lime green cream in an unlabeled lil jar idk my sister filled it n gave it to me like Here use this i accidentally bought the Extra Large bottle and it expires in 6 months and its for under ur eyes so like. its not like a normal person can finish it in that time. ANYWAY

bedtime routine: i wash my face with the pure skin face cleanser from First Aid Beauty! which im lowkey running out of djjfjfkfkfkfk help . anyway, inflammatory acne ruined my whole face around the time my abuelita passed away (apparently grief can induce acne. i hate this entire concept) so i have a prescription medication for it, which is Biacna. its a topical gel that contains tretinoin so it kills the bacteria that lives on the skin. its very drying and bad to use in large quantities so i apply a small amount evenly to my whole face. u can find skincare products w similar, but less intense, ingredients online or wherever they sell products that are like, the product is what it says it is (like the ordinary!). after ive applied my eye cream i apply the honey grail face oil again! and then moisturize with the ultra repair cream

other: im basically married to the pure-clay red algae mask from L'Oreal it is my FAVE mask of all time....!!!! its exfoliating and my textured skin reacts well to it, and i tend to use it about 2-3 times a week bc it makes my skin look a lot smoother. i also like the calendula and aloe mask from Kiehls! it smells like marmalade and it says to keep it on for 10min but i usually go for at least 30min; its a soothing hydration mask so theres no need to worry abt it drying ur skin out. i recommend just going to Kiehls (if available near u) and asking for a sample of it which is what im using LOL. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SAMPLES. on occasion ill use a sheet mask (any one, but i like the moisturizing honey mask and the aloe hydrating mask the most) from The Face Shop (they p much always have a promo for buying in bulk, and sheet masks r just so calming). i tend to not use them often bc they leave a serum on ur face that basically prohibits u from using any of my other products ajdjdjfjfj EDIT: sometimes if i feel i rly need it i use the drink up intensive overnight avocado mask from Origins! i love hydration

How to treat psoriasis through Ayurveda?

Psoriasis is a skin-related auto-immune disorder that causes the multiplication of skin cells up to 10 times faster than normal. This leads to the built-up of bumpy red patches covered with white scales on the skin. These patches can grow anywhere, but mostly they appear on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back. Psoriasis can't be passed from one person to another. Sometimes, it happens in members of the same family.

Formation of scales on the joints, such as elbows and knees. Other body parts include the Hands, feet, neck, scalp, and face.

What is an Ayurvedic view of Psoriasis?

In Ayurveda texts, psoriasis is correlated with the ‘Kitibha’and is considered one of the common varieties of eleven Ksudrakushta. It is caused due to the imbalance of Vata as well as KaphaDosha. Its symptoms are – Syavam (Blackish brown skin discoloration), Parusa (hard to touch) and Kinakharsparsa (affected skin will be rough like, scar tissue). If Vatadosha is dominant dosha then the symptoms will be excessive dryness and flaking are seen and if Kapha is the dominant dosha then silvery wet scaling with a lot of itching and swelling is seen.

What are the types of psoriasis?

Pustular psoriasis: In this condition, there is the formation of scaly skin with tiny pustules on the palms of the hands as well as soles of the feet.

Guttate psoriasis: This often starts in childhood or young adulthood, which causes red spots, mainly on the torso and limbs. The triggering factors are respiratory infections, strep throat, tonsillitis, stress, and injury to the skin.

Inverse psoriasis: There is a formation of bright red, shiny lesions that appear in skin folds, such as the armpits, groin, or under the breasts.

Erythrodermic psoriasis: It causes redness of the skin and shedding of scales. The triggering factors are severe sunburn, infections, certain medications, etc.

What are the symptoms of psoriasis?

Psoriasis symptoms may differ from person to person and depend on its types. The affected can be as small as a few flakes or can cover the whole body.

The most common symptoms of psoriasis include:

1.    Patches on the skin are red, raised and inflamed

2.    Formation of whitish-silver scales or plaques

3.    Dry skin may get crack and bleed

4.    Soreness around the patches

5.    Itching and burning sensation over the skin

6.    Nails become thin and pitted

7.    Painful and swollen joints

Not every person will experience all of these symptoms because the symptoms may vary according to the condition. The symptoms may become severe for a few days or weeks, and then may clear up and be almost unnoticeable. Then, in a few weeks the condition may flare up again but sometimes, symptoms disappear completely.

In some of the cases, people with psoriasis can also get a type of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis. This leads to pain, inflammation, and swelling in the joints. The National Psoriasis Foundation has estimated that between 10% to 30% of people who are suffering from psoriasis also have psoriatic arthritis.

Here are some of the factors that can increase your risk of developing the disease:

Family history: Having one parent with psoriasis increases the risk of getting psoriasis.

Viral and bacterial infections: People with HIV who have a weak immune system are more likely to develop psoriasis than people with healthy immune systems.

Stress: Stress can also impact your immune system which increases the risk of psoriasis.

Obesity: Excessive weight gain increases the risk of psoriasis because the lesions mainly develop in skin creases and folds.

Smoking: Smoking and tobacco chewing not only increases the risk of psoriasis but also increases the severity of the disease.

Home Treatment & Remedies for Hemorrhoid Relief

Hemorrhoids a painful disease that is commonly known as piles. The change in eating habits like eating pizza, burgers, and heavy meals at night time makes your digestion slow. 7 Self Care Practices You Can Do At Home

If you have an Instagram account and follow at least one yogi, you’ve probably seen the hashtag #SelfCareSunday. It’s all about giving your body, soul, and spirit what it needs so you can face the demands of life with a renewed sense of clarity, energy, and a positive attitude. Sounds simple right?   In reality, the majority of us are so crazed during the week, the very last thing on the to-do list is taking care of ourselves. When we think about relaxing, we picture spas or Balinese retreats or yoga classes, but there are so many things you can do right in your own home to access those feelings of total relaxation.   Check out my top picks for self care practices you can do at home.

1. Have a morning gratitude ritual.

Rather than starting your day dreading what’s to come, start a routine that helps you focus on all the good things in your life. My favorite thing to do in the morning is to head to the beach down the road from my house and take just one minute to stand in the wind listening to the waves.

I take a couple deep breaths and acknowledge how lucky I am to have this experience each morning. If you aren’t so lucky to live near the ocean, find something in your home or neighborhood that gives you this sense of gratitude. Even if it’s just the cup of coffee you’re drinking, really take the time to enjoy each sip and appreciate a moment of stillness.

2. Do a morning detox.

When you’re stressed, it can be so hard to focus on eating well, and tension and anxiety can further disrupt digestion. A simple way to detoxify your body each morning is to drink a cup of warm water with lemon. This will jump start your digestion and give you a little health boost to start your day.

3. Practice Restorative yoga.

A lot of us put pressure on ourselves to get to the gym every day. However, giving your body a break is just as important as being active. There are so many wonderful yoga poses that you can practice at home, and even in your bed. They can even help you unwind before bed for a more restful night sleep. Here are some wonderful poses and sequences to help you sleep better.

4. Make your bath tub a spa.

Is there anything more relaxing that a nice warm bath after a long day? Take your bath to the next level by adding some essential oils (try lavender, rose, or chamomile for ultimate bliss). If you’re feeling sore, sick, or totally depleted, try an Epsom Salt bath. This ancient remedy is said to relieve muscle pain, menstrual cramps, improve circulation, and generally detoxify your body.

5. Invest in an essential oil diffuser.

Whether it’s stress, anger, sadness, headaches, or creative blocks, these powerful oils can help center, soothe, and rejuvenate you. There are tons of options when it comes to diffusers, and many come with a starter kit of oils. Keep one in your bedroom for a more peaceful bedtime, or better yet in your office for all day healing.

6. Create a sacred space.

The reason that we go on vacation, to the spa, or spend time in nature is to escape from the noise of our lives. It’s so important to have a place in your home that exists just for the purpose of making you feel at peace. Even if it’s just a corner in your bedroom, create a sacred space that is filled with things that make your soul feel good.

Incorporate your favorite books, candles, pillows, flowers, anything that encourages you to be your best self. I like to write myself notes of encouragement that I put in my sacred spaces as reminders each day.

7. Do nothing.

Yes, do absolutely nothing. Just sit, lay down, stand, and breathe. Breathing is the single most important thing you can do to eliminate stress. Our breath is the thing that connects us to the present moment, the place where we are not worrying about the future or the past.

Having this quiet stillness also allows you to actually hear yourself. It’s the time when you can tune in to what your mind and body really need to feel their best.

Self care is about more than taking a long, luxurious bath every once in a while. It’s about taking time each day just for yourself. With any luck, self care will be much more than a social media trend, but rather a shift in focus from stretching ourselves too thin, to taking the time to replenish our bodies, souls, and spirits.
