Consider the Size of Your Bedroom: Choose a bedside table that is appropriate for the size of your room. A large and bulky table might overwhelm a smaller space, while a tiny table might not offer enough functionality in a larger room.
Match Your Bed Height: Ideally, the top of your bedside table should be roughly level with the top of your mattress for easy access to essentials.
Think About Storage Needs: Do you need additional storage space? Look for bedside tables with drawers or shelves to keep your belongings organized.
Style Matters: Choose a bedside table that complements the overall style of your bedroom. Consider the existing furniture, colours, and textures when making your decision.

if you’re still doing prompts: ⁹¹⁾ six missed calls
Car mechanic Daniel, driver Max.
Daniel’s brain pulses inside his head, kissing the fragile walls of his skull with every second he’s awake. His nose simultaneously runs out of one nostril and is stuffed up in the other. Even through his slightly blocked hearing, he knows his breathing sounds wheezy and congested.
He props himself up onto a shaky elbow and almost collapses with the motion. His whole body aches. There’s spine-chilling shivers sent through his bones one second and hot flashes the next. Groaning, he finally adjusts himself to a seated position and takes a second to regroup.
Reluctantly, he reaches for his phone to turn off do not disturb. He hates to call out of work, made worse by how nice Cyril always is about it. The garage is a lot for the two of them to handle, let alone Cyril by himself.
Daniel blinks when he realizes he has six missed calls from the garage. He’s definitely running a bit behind his usual schedule, but Cyril doesn’t set specific hours for him so long as Daniel gets his work done. There must be some emergency, which is fucking great. He’ll be taking medicine and going after all.
He sees spots when he stands to his feet, but he grabs his bedside table and manages to stay upright. He puts the phone on speaker and drops it on the bed while he pulls on the first respectably clean items of clothing he can find. Not like it matters, really. He’ll sweat through them within five minutes of working through this fever, and grease always seems to permeate their coveralls no matter what they do.
Cyril picks up in a state of panic — which, for him, still sounds remarkably calm and stable.
“We have an emergency repair,” he informs Daniel. “It’s going to take me all day, probably. I need you to cover everything else so I can get this done.”
“I’ll be there in fifteen,” Daniel promises, trying his absolute best to sound as if he’s not deathly ill. Cyril is too caught up in frantically relaying this emergency to Daniel, who has entirely tuned him out in pursuit of getting on pants without passing out and splitting his head open. He probably ends the call rather rudely into Cyril’s story, but he needs to focus all his attention on driving into work without a dizzy spell.
Cyril takes one look at him and tries to send him straight back home.
“No,” Daniel protests. “I’m good. I’ll go home if it’s still bad by midday, but I’m alright. You have that emergency repair for someone important.”
The reminder of this seemingly VIP client perks Cyril right up. “You would not believe who is in our office right now,” he says, dropping his voice to a low whisper.
Daniel shrugs. He probably can guess. A tiny auto repair shop on the outskirts of Perth doesn’t exactly attract high profile visitors. At best, it’s probably some dickhead politician or half-famous musician. They definitely have money, based on the nice ass car Cyril was working on when Daniel walked in.
“Go and look,” Cyril says excitedly, shoving Daniel toward the door that leads into the office space.
This mystery guy has his back to Daniel, bent over on his phone. Daniel sees broad shoulders and scruffy hair in that nebulous area between blond and brown.
It’s only when the guy turns around that he realizes he’s looking at Max Verstappen.
Daniel hasn’t paid actual attention to F1 in years. He did his time in Italy, tried to prove himself worthy of a real shot. He got it, too. He did races with HRT, made it two races with Toro Rosso, and then collapsed in the paddock before quali and was diagnosed with a heart condition. Manageable, they said. Shouldn’t affect his length or quality of life, so long as he took medication and stopped putting his body through the enormous strain of racing.
He’d considered saying fuck it and racing anyway. It felt more important to him than anything else at that time. To a 22-year-old with his dreams at his fingertips, he figured there was no quality of life without F1.
His mum, though — it would have destroyed her. He returned to Perth and laid uselessly in bed for two months, then found the closest job to cars he could stomach without driving himself mental over what he’d lost.
“Everything okay?” Max asks, twisting and facing his body toward Daniel when he hears the door open. His blue eyes widen when they take in Daniel, probably looking just as spooked as Daniel’s do right now. Daniel knows he’s sick, but he didn’t realize he looked atrocious enough to scare people.
“Hi,” Daniel says. His words come out phlegmy, and he tries for a casual cough to clear it. He can feel it’s not successful, but forges on. “Uh, I don’t know if Cyril mentioned it, but your repair is going to probably be an all-day thing. You don’t have to sit in here.” Then, panicked that he sounds as if he’s kicking Max out, he hastily clarifies. “Obviously, you can stay if you want. There’s just probably more exciting things to do.”
Max looks at him drily. “I don’t have a car.”
“Right,” Daniel says. “Like, no offense, but I think you’ve got the money to rent a new one.”
Max doesn’t look remotely offended. He laughs, something genuine and higher-pitched than Daniel expected.
“I’ve done all the tourist things anyway. I leave tomorrow. I don’t really mind just sitting here.”
“Alright, well. Just wanted to let you know.”
“Thank you, Daniel,” Max says. He has a nice smile, Daniel thinks, and admires the pink shape of it before Max turns back to his phone.
It takes his hazy brain ages to realize he never told Max his name.
Max hunches over his screen, shooting the odd glance at the door to make sure no one’s about to bust back through. He types in the Instagram handle he’s visited countless times over the years. Daniel Ricciardo, who shook his hand at a karting event with a big grin and imprinted himself permanently on Max’s psyche.
Max had spent ages on his dad’s computer after that collapse, refreshing the search over and over until a news article confirmed that Daniel was alive.
Daniel had faded in and out of Max’s memory in the years since, but he never left completely. Every so often, Max would look at his social media and watch the profile picture change with the times. Those pixels on a locked-down profile were the only documentation he had that Daniel was still out in the world somewhere and doing okay.
He didn’t come to Perth for Daniel. He didn’t even know if Daniel still lived here, for one. Plus, it would be incredibly creepy to track him down based on the foggy memory of a decade old karting event.
Max had watched back Daniel’s limited races, breathless at the raw potential. He’d wondered a few times what it would’ve been like if Daniel stayed and fought his way into Red Bull long enough for Max to race beside him.
Even still, he didn’t pick his vacation spot for Daniel. Subconsciously, maybe it influenced his choice, but he had two spare weeks after Melbourne and an ache to see something besides his white bedroom walls.
Fate, not Max, made his ludicrously expensive rental car break down in the Perth suburbs and brought him to Daniel’s garage.
He looks down at Daniel’s profile. 32 posts. A profile picture of him in a colourful bucket hat sipping a drink. No mutual followers, despite the countless people that connect them. Daniel didn’t make this page until he was out of F1, and Max assumes he blocked out that world entirely.
He hovers his finger over the follow button, then exits the app before he can make that kind of bad decision. Instead, he stands, pats his jeans to check for his wallet, and marches out the door toward the cafe a few doors down.
He thinks of Daniel’s raspy voice and ruddy, fever-red cheeks and hopes he likes soup.

Omg. Omg!!!! Streamer Max my beloved! What does Daniel do when he stumbles onto Max's stream? I'm just imagining him clicking on a random link or something and suddenly bam he's got a face full of this pretty streamer with slutty short shorts!
(Anyway love your work and hope you have a great day!! 🥰)
You are so sweet I hope you have a great day too!!
Some slutty streamer Max to try and have something good to end the day with
Daniel sighs, rolling over towards the bedside table and grabbing his phone, checking the time for what feels like the twentieth time that night already.
4:42 am.
Just twenty minutes after the last time he checked.
He sighs again, sitting up slightly to drink some water, resigned to the fact that he'll probably won't get any sleep tonight either. If he's lucky, he'll get a couple hours when the sun is rising and then sneak a nap in somewhere during the afternoon.
He knows that jet lag is not helping, having landed in Perth from Los Angeles just two days ago, but he's been dealing with this insomnia for way too long to lie to himself any further. Sleep simply isn't coming.
He's tried most things already tonight, from the relaxing herbal tea his mom had recommended, to the white noise machine, to the podcasts, to the meditation. Nothing has worked.
He grabs his phone again, going through some of his messages and emails before clicking on the twitch app.
It's something new he's been trying the past couple of weeks, doesn't even remember who recommended it to him, and so far it hasn't worked, but at this point into the night he's willing to do anything. Whoever it was who first told him about it had been speaking about ASMR streams and music channels, but Daniel has been mostly browsing around, not really finding anything that catches his eye.
Tonight, he moves past the few streams he has followed already, scrolling through the live channels without looking for anything in particular, until something catches his eyes.
At first glance the stream doesn't look like anything special, even if the game itself looks cute, just a guy in a dimly lit room in a corner of the screen, mouth moving to say words Daniel can't hear yet, but.
The guy is sitting on a gaming chair, leaning back slightly in a way that Daniel doubts is fully comfortable, legs splayed, his short shorts bunched up to leave milky skin on display. He's using both hands to play, but just as Daniel is watching, slightly transfixed, he laughs, probably at something in chat, and brings one hand away to lightly scratch at his neck and then down to his leg, pulling it more to the side, fingers grazing on his crotch.
Daniel swallows.
He taps on the screen, opening the stream without really thinking about it, finally letting the guy's voice play through the speakers.
"...just for 40 more minutes. No, you cannot bribe me for one hour, Kiks, not even if you use the cute emote. I have work."
He has an accent, a lisp that comes out when he says Kiks, bright blue eyes and a lovely smile. And a hand that is still on his dick.
Daniel's eyes fall on the name of the stream, Farming some slimes, which tells him nothing, and the name of the game, Slime Rancher 2, which tells him that at least he's not in some sort of secret porn category, before going back to the camera square.
The guy is now playing again, hands just barely in view from where they're wrapped around the controller, and Daniel takes a breath, trying to gather his bearings after feeling like he's just been hit over the head with an hammer.
The chat is scrolling by slowly, his 236 viewers obviously not all interested in talking, so Daniel has no problem catching the last few messages. It's mostly people complaining about the guy leaving early, the person he was talking to earlier, KicksforKiks24, offering to gift some subs if he stays longer, and Daniel wonders if he is the only one noticing the absolutely sinful thighs on display here.
Nightnectior: What if I ask really nicely Max?
The new message pops up in chat, and Daniel watches as the streamer, Max apparently, laughs again, shaking his head.
"No, Night, I told you, I have things to do early in the morning."
Okay, maybe Daniel is the weird one here. Maybe he is the only one thinking about Max's legs and reading his posture wrong. Maybe he is the only perv in this chat, and everyone else is absolutely normal.
Severson: would love to see you do /things/ in the morning
Daniel chokes on his spit.
He's expecting Max to ignore it, or to delete the message, or to have any kind of reasonable reaction, but Max.
Max grins.
He blinks slowly, shifting on the chair almost casually, bringing one foot up to rest on the seat, shorts bunching up so much Daniel can see a hint of pubes, the outline of his balls and dick now fully visible, and then sliding a hand down his thigh to rest on his lower belly, fingers grazing his crotch again.
"Would you?" he asks, voice low.
Daniel has forgotten what Max's asking about. He's forgotten about anything that isn't the desire of sinking his teeth in the meat of his thigh, to have them wrapped around his head, and the knowledge that his dick is half hard already.
"I don't think that's how it works," Max says, in response to a message Daniel doesn't even care to look at right now. He's barely aware of the chat going faster now, more messages popping up in a rapid succession.
"Oh look at all of you, coming out to play."
Max's hand slides lower, now fully on his dick, as he giggles, a sliver of his stomach exposed too. Daniel's heart is beating in his ears. He doesn't know what's happening.
There's a new sound on the stream, something that startles Daniel out of his daze enough to realise someone has just donated €50 just to call Max a pretty boy.
Daniel wonders how hard it is to figure out how donations work. How much he can donate without his bank blocking his account. How much it would take for Max to do something.
He swallows, feeling slightly insane.
Max's fingers squeeze once.
Daniel's breath stutters in his chest, his hands twitching, wanting to touch himself too but so transfixed he doesn't dare moving.
And then Max shifts, grabbing the controller again and sitting up a bit, shirt falling back into place. Even if the outline of his dick is still clearly visible, something in the spell breaks, letting Daniel breathe again.
He can still feel his heart rabbiting in his chest, his mouth dry. His dick is hard under the sheets.
With a trembling finger, Daniel presses follow.

omg emma… your tags on alexis’s post are so genius… dirtbag daniel not ready to date a guy doesn’t notice his entire existence is dedicated to making max happy… max accidentally calling daniel “daniel” on the radio when he’s at mercedes… daniel making bitchy comments to the press?!
i think i genuinely might be dying over thinking about the contrast between daniel irl leaving for renault vs. engineer max leaving daniel for mercedes. (also for me, for this to work, u gotta role-reverse the ages as well and make max older daniel younger)
max finding himself stuck...at red bull. a deep intrinsic feeling inside him that he's got nowhere to go, rised as high as he thinks he can within the team, has attached himself to someone (daniel) who doesn't need him as much as max needs him (entirely false, daniel is half the driver he is because of max) and so takes a secret meeting with toto who has been trying to poach max ever since he first started climbing the ranks at red bull and making a name for himself. toto promising him everything in the world. and more. promises him he can be lewis' engineer and head of race engineering. promises him bonuses he's never heard of. promises that max can also help out with mercedes sim racing team in his spare time at the factory. and max thinks and thinks and thinks about it and if there's one thing max is, it's honest. so he tells christian. tells him bluntly and succinctly and christian throws so much at him but realistically max's mind is made up before he even sits down with toto.
and daniel overhearing a conversation he shouldn't and barging into max's private office furious with him, why are you leaving to work for the enemy kinda shit, are you trying to stab me in the back, what have i done to deserve this betrayal etc etc. daniel punches max's office wall and max knows then and there he's made the right decision. asks daniel to leave immediately. the second half of the season goes dreadful for them, max short with daniel on the radio, doesn't play up to his antics anymore, daniel being summoned to see the stewards every race for doing dumb shit he knows he shouldn't do. sky sports always cutting to shots of max rolling his eyes. but daniel still manages to scrape the championship and the red bull mechanics hold max and daniel aloft on their shoulders and spray them with champagne and max and daniel have their arms around each others shoulders and there is a fleeting moment where max looks at daniel, the brightness and happiness on his face and he realises this is why he does his job, this is why he should stay, but he pushes it down and down and down and down. daniel goes to perth. max goes to some tropical island somewhere.
(whilst in perth, daniel prints off the photo of him and max on rbr mechanic's shoulders and frames it. he puts it in his home office at first. but he doesn't spend enough time in there. he takes it out the frame and puts it on the fridge with a dutch flag magnet he has that max had gifted him after his first zandvoort win. but everytime someone came round they would look at it and ask why max would quit. he puts it back in the frame and puts it on his bedside table. it stays there)
and then they both turn up to testing. daniel in navy like always, max in a tight fitted white tommy hilfiger shirt (wHICH PERFECTLY ACCENTUATES HIS PUFFY PERKY FAT NIPPLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and daniel hates it hates it hates it hates it hates it. they ask each other how the winter break was and what they got up to but the conversation is stilted and wrong and they both leave it feeling devoid and empty. testing is testing and bahrain is bahrain. daniel and his new engineer miss a couple of points of key information and communication and its a bit of a shambles of a race but daniel still gets p2. stands below lewis on the podium. max to his immediate right-hand side. he stands tall and straight. head forward. listens to every single word of god save the king. doesn't shift slightly. listens and listens and listens. and then the trophys are handed out. he looks at it once. places it on the ground. looks at his shoes. remembers. remembers max. malaysia. bright red flushed eager and keen. stole daniel's shoe right out his hand. guzzled it down, no egging-on needed from daniel at all. the way they locked eyes afterwards. the blowjob in the club bathroom. the filthy sex they had later that evening. he looks up. oscar receives his trophy. the personnel shift and move and then he's gripping the neck of the champagne bottle hard, slamming it down on the podium, turning his back to lewis and oscar and spraying it all at max. max does the same, drenching daniel. he can see max's bright smile through the spray and daniel laughs, proper, shakes it and sprays him some more and when it's all gone, they stand, looking at each other, drenched, soaking, panting, breathless (MAXS WHITE TOMMY HILFIGER SHIRT DRIPPING WET SEE THROUGH PERKY PERKY PERKY HARD NIPPLES!!!!!!!!!) and christian horner is stood in the crowd head in hands knowing he's about to be faced with a dilemma.
and then YES "daniel 0.9 behind" and crofty picks up on it and makes some snarky comment about how red bull let max go so that he could infiltrate mercedes from the inside. daniel being sarcastic in the media when they ask him about max still calling him daniel and being like "well i obviously made an impression on him" or "its hard to forget me when i'm that good" and max hates the taunting but also loves it. gives him some sense that daniel still thinks about him also !!!
(late at night, daniel finds youtube videos of lewis' play by play race. he tells himself its to do with tactics and finding out lewis' racing lines etc. really he's listening to the radio. hearing the way max and lewis talk. trying to work out if they have the same relationship max and him have. if max uses the same intonation. the same phrases. if max flirts with lewis the way he did with daniel)

Happy New Year sunshine!
Summary: You are spending New Year's eve with Daniel in Perth for the first time.
Hope you’ll enjoy this part. Let me know in the comments section! And to support me!
Enjoy
Lots of love, xxx Spicy Clover
Tumblr media
You have been a couple for almost four years with Daniel, and you haven’t been able to spend the holidays together since then. This year was the year where you spent Christmas with your boyfriend.
On 23rd December, you did Christmas with your parents and your family. Daniel finally got to meet everybody, and on the 24th, you were on a plane to go across the globe to Australia to spend with his family on the 26th. It took you two days to go across the world because of a snowstorm, and your flight was delayed.
When you finally arrived, you were exhausted. But happiness filled your heart when you saw how Daniel was so happy to be back in Australia. You then did several activities. Between surfing, motocross and hiking, you are exhausted and unfortunately ill today, the 31st.
A nasty cold is coming at you, and you’ve been bedridden since early morning and most of last night.
It pains you because you know Daniel wants to spend New Year’s with his friends, but he feels terrible about leaving you alone for the beginning of this new year.
You reassured him, and after long hours of negotiations, he finally agreed to join his friends on their yacht.
You promised to call him at midnight to spend New Year's together.
You’re sitting in your bed listening to a movie. You feel that you are falling asleep more and more, and the fatigue prevents you from keeping your eyes open.
However, 11:45 pm arrives, and you fall asleep in your bed filled with worn tissues.
You don’t know that Daniel never made it to the yacht, so he returned to be with you for the New Year.
So, like a prince charming in his white car, he came home and found you asleep.
He looks at the time on the dial on the bedside table. 23:59.57 seconds.
He comes up to you gently and kisses your lips at exactly midnight. You open your eyes, surprised to feel his warm lips on yours, but you smile when you see him above you.
Two days later, he’s the one in bed with the nasty cold.

oct' 21 x acorns
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prompt: acorns Pairing: tim rockford x f!reader Word Count: 724 Warnings: T+ mentions of crimes & a touch of spice. Summary: pretty proud of this one and it's use of the prompt 😋 tim knows the way to your heart is discussing the latest research for your podcast.
x. masterlist
Tumblr media
“Acorns? You moving into squirrel crimes now sweetheart?”
“Ha ha,” you responded dryly,  “ACORNS, the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network.” He raised an eyebrow in interest, you weren’t sure if this was the result of learning what the acronym was for or if it had something to do with you starting the process of peeling off your t-shirt.
When you looked back at him, once the shirt was up and over your head, he was adjusting himself where he was sitting up against the headboard of the bed, his glasses now folded on top of the book he had been reading when you’d entered the room.
“So,” he began, a soft smile playing at his lips as he crossed his arms at his bare chest, “what’s caught your eye?” he asked.
You smiled back at him, a genuine one - he knew the way to your heart, true crime.
“So,” you started, turning to the dresser as you unhooked your bra, “so they were seeing an increase in reports on ACORNS, right? You've got your standard mix of fraud, identity theft, all the usual cybercrime stuff. Nothing to write home about right?”
“But?” Tim pressed, playing along.
“But what got me curious was a pattern of crimes that looked like random, disconnected incidents targeting average people. We're talking about everything from a cafe owner in Sydney to a retired nurse in Perth. And this has been going on for years.”
"Years?" Tim echoed, intrigued. "And they're just noticing this now?"
“Exactly!” you replied enthusiastically, tossing your bra into the laundry hamper and reaching into the dresser for one of Tim’s oversized shirts, what he wore when he actually had more than five minutes at home between cases. “The reports have only now been made public, and by the looks of it it’s taken them this long to even realize something might be off, and because it’s public knowledge, it’s caught the attention of the armchair detectives who are digging in, but no one can find a connection.”
Tim shifted in his seat again, tapping his fingers against his chest thoughtfully. “Not entirely strange though,” he said. “Cyber crimes are still relatively new. Many countries are sitting on data that they just don’t know what to do with besides selling it. Though, with any crime, patterns usually emerge sooner or later, someone slips up. Have they found anything that could point to a single culprit or group?”
“Nothing. Zilch. That's why it's so bizarre,” you said, shimming out of your jeans and kicking them off before walking over to sit beside him on the bed. “But here's where it gets interesting. When you compare these Australian cases to similar crimes reported in neighbouring countries like New Zealand or Indonesia, little patterns start to stand out.”
Tim raised an eyebrow, his attention fully piqued. “What kind of patterns are we talking about?”
You grinned, thrilled by his obvious interest. “Teeny tiny little anomalies,” you took his glasses and book and placed them on your bedside table, “Specific coding sequences, certain times of the day when the attacks occur, even certain types of targets that are more frequently hit in both regions. Individually, these little things don't really mean much. But when you start looking at them collectively and across borders, it’s like a constellation. You begin to see the outline of something much bigger.”
“Sounds like someone's running a long con,” Tim observed.
He uncrossed his arms as you swung your leg over to straddle his hips, your arms wrapping around his neck to rest on his broad shoulders.
“That's what I'm thinking too,” you said, your voice low as you leaned in to place a kiss on his lips.
Tim's hands slid up your sides, his fingers grazing the bare skin of your back under the t-shirt, “You really shouldn't have bothered.” he said, his voice low and husky.
You leaned in closer, your breath hot against his ear, “Bothered with what?” you whispered feigning cluelessness, trailing kisses down his neck.
“The shirt,” Tim replied, tilting his head back to grant you better access. “You're much better without it.”
You laughed softly, the sound sending shivers down his spine. “I needed something to wear.”
“Who said you needed to wear anything at all?” Tim countered, flipping you both over so he was on top of you.

Ivy & Twine: Wrap my flesh...
After a couple of days' worth of disconnect, Inquisitor Lavellan confronts Cole about what he knew of Solas' true identity and The Iron Bull's loyalty. cw: dissociation, mention of bull's death in darveraad start from the top: [x]
Amaryll jerked into consciousness, and up in her bed, when the sky outside was of a pallid violet. She was alone, for once, though traces of strangers were all over her chamber. The scent of lavender hung sickeningly heavy in the heated air. Books, games, reports and sketches had been stacked and placed next to the table. In their stead bushels of dried herbs, vials and bottles were spread across the surface. A plate she could not remember eating from stood on her bedside table, and a goblet that smelled of lavender as well. Almost as if to punish her, the Inquisitor’s head started spinning, and for a little while she believed to see a wolf in the shadow between her desk and the wall across the room. But then the world came to a still, and the predator was gone - even if the drumming in her chest would have her believe otherwise.
She didn’t know it, but it was the dawn of the fourth day since Halamshiral. Since the day before yesterday she had been magically calmed the same number of times, in order to get her to eat and drink without a struggle. The surgeon had diagnosed her with an excess of black bile, which supposedly rendered her melancholic. And since black bile was associated with the coldest and driest of the four humours, the treatment consisted of the exact opposite: she was to take in a lot of soft, moist, spicy foods, lots of liquids, and her chambers were to be heated to combat the cold in Amaryll’s bones. The lavender was to help as well, thus the overabundance of it.
Amaryll did not remember any of it, however. Not the poking and prodding by the surgeon and the enchanter, not Josephine standing near, almost shaking.
She remembered fragments of her fears and nightmares, continuous plays of light. Darkness, sunshine, eating and breaking their way through colored glass. The Iron Bull, sitting on her divan, slowly turning his head with the flaming arrow of hers that had pierced his remaining eye, talking to her. It could’ve been different, you know? Wolves and demons shoring along the walls of her chamber, growling, bound to the shadows. Qunari warriors swinging their weapons side to side, back and forth in expecting silence. Waiting for a show of weakness as their cue to start.
She also recalled a noise like cutlery against glass that incessantly rang in her ears.
Clearer than anything else that stood out, however, were the only coherent words that she remembered from a conversation that’d taken place last night.
The voice of a woman, a stranger, saying: “Do you think it’ll help?”
And another: “Doubt it. Mad with grief is not easily cured.”
“How do you know it’s grief and not something else? Enchanter Perth said there’s no demon, but she might’ve been poisoned.”
“Hmpf. Whoever would have her poisoned would be making sure she’d die, don’t you think? Not lay around-” A whisper. Then, louder: “No. Grieving, I tell you. Over the traitors.”
“The Iron Bull. I cannot believe…”
“Because you ogled him from the start. Before Arwyn.”
“Mara! That’s not true.”
“Is, too.”
“I was just wondering…” Pause. “The other one, that boy… they say he reads minds. The Iron Bull was with us for a long while, the apostate longer. Could he not have- not have done something? And all the-” Her voice trailed off.
“The elves who left. I’m sorry, Delphine. I know Arwyn meant a lot to you.”
It was only the following morning, hours and hours later, that this fragment of the conversation came back to Amaryll.
The other one, that boy, they say he reads minds. The Iron Bull was with us a long while, the apostate longer. Could he not have done something about it? And all the elves who left?
The words were devoid of meaning to Amaryll Lavellan when she first heard them echo within herself, sitting in the silent room. It was much like wearing a loose shirt that got caught on something. She stood still, couldn’t tear herself away by force lest it ripped.
Could he... not have done something?
Amaryll sank back onto her cold, sweat-soaked pillow. The next few hours she spent going over what had happened again and again. Turning every event over, inspecting it and its outcomes. Peering at its core, trying to place it into the bigger context. She tried remembering everything she could. Every conversation she’d had with her companions, everyone she’d met since she woke up in Haven’s dungeon. Every choice she’d made on her own behalf, then those made on behalf of others, then those made on behalf of entire groups of people.
As time went on, the emptiness inside Amaryll gave way to uninhibited frenzy. A buzzing sensation was sending tremors through every limb of hers, until she couldn’t possibly lay still any longer. Without a thought for anything but the questions swirling in her mind, the Inquisitor left her quarters - undressed, and barefoot. She walked out into the Main Hall, never hearing the dropping of conversations that accompanied her entrance, and took the first door on the right to Lady Montilyet’s office.
Josephine lifted her head when she entered and her eyes widened. She looked like she was seeing a specter.
“Ambassador Montilyet,” Lady Amaryll greeted her. Her voice sounded detached and authoritative. Depleted of all warmth it ever held, and filled to the brim with lightning.
Instinctively, Josephine stood up as fast as she could. No words came to mind, except: “Inquisitor.”
She was not required to say anything, however.
“I would have a messenger sent to fetch Cole,” Lady Lavellan requested, aiming for the next door as she walked. “He is to meet me in the War Room. There are to be no eyes in front of the widows or ears in the walls or at the door.”
Josephine’s eyes followed her. When no answer came from the ambassador, Amaryll halted and stared back at her. She was not in a condition to process any information held in the other woman’s face.
“Yes, Inquisitor,” Josephine said eventually.
Without another word, the elf strode on out of the office and towards the War Room. Leaving Josephine harrowed, confused, and worried.
“Cole! It is good I get to see you before the Lady Inquisitor does.”
Running in circles, fear bunching up like a blanket in her belly. Taking space where other things are blooming, tumbling out of mind as soon as they appear.
Josephine had been evidently walking up and down her office, and her bottom lip was plump from biting. Cole lifted his head to meet her gaze when she came up to him; she felt safer looking into his eyes, even if it unsettled him.
“Amaryll - Her Worship is still unwell. She seems-”
Words were eluding her, phrases that rang untrue or harsh were the only ones that came to mind.
“You can say what you mean,” Cole reminded her gently, and the woman drew air into her lungs at once.
“She seems erratic and demanded no-one listen to the conversation. I called for Seeker Cassandra and Rainier to be stationed outside of the room. Should you require… assistance, yell, and they will come to aid you.”
“It will be alright, Josephine,” he promised.
Her pale eyes searched his face. Worry was etched into them, but eventually her expression softened a bit.
“Be careful.”
Cole nodded. In a gesture of reassurance, he reached for her hand and squeezed it.
“Stolen purple berries staining tongue and cheek, laughter in her fist, as Madame Matisse is walking past them, overlooking two small girls in the bushes,” he suggested and watched the last wrinkle of concern disappear from between the ambassador’s eyebrows.
Leaving her with a pleasant childhood memory, he then moved on.
“We are here,” Cassandra told him as he approached.
Thom was quiet, restrained, never lifting his hand off the hilt of his sheathed sword.
“She is safe,” Cole said in his direction, and watched the blue in his eyes deepen.
The part of him that would forever remain ethereal felt Amaryll before Cole had even opened the door to the War Room. Upon entering he sensed a wave of frantic animosity directed his way, daggers sharp and hot. When he pushed past them, coming closer, he realized that there was something wrong.
Colors. Too many of them. Whirring about her, clashing, drowning, pushing, tearing, beating. A cloud of pain and confusion was enveloping the woman, as dense as the fog she liked to disappear in. There was no coming closer without triggering hostility, and so Cole stood several feet away from the War Table, behind which Amaryll had positioned herself.
“You’re upset,” he said to break the silence, find a way in.
He reached out to her, further and further. It should have been easy to reach in once the anchor was gone, but it hadn’t been. There’d been two of her. Or rather one of her inside her body, and another one a little to the left of her body. He’d tried explaining it to Enchanter Perth as well, but he didn’t understand. There was no sickness, only her, coming to the surface after years of pushing down and pushing and pushing and pushing-
Chain a bird to stone and watch it struggle.
Because she was his friend, and because the anchor was gone, and because she was finally open, he could feel that she was raw. An open flesh wound, hot and steaming like glowing iron in water, like a person’s first warm breath after stepping into snow. Cole pulled back.
“How is it,” Amaryll asked, unaware of the chaos swirling about her, “that you spent over half a year in everybody’s mind?” Her voice cracked, thinned as it was coming out of her dry throat and mouth. "Please tell me how you’ve been with us for so long, on close quarters, reaching into people’s heads, and last week was the first time I’ve heard of the infiltration.”
He had an answer. Though he was unsure if she could hear it over everything else.
“You’re unwell,” Cole ventured forward again, gentler than before.
He took a silent step towards the table, and her emotional landscape. It was loud. Everything about her was screaming at him, and he recoiled once again. But his feet never moved back.
“Hundreds of elves.”
Wound up, wound tight, trapped in a ball of yarn, with loops hanging out from all sides, but no end, nowhere to start untangling.
She isn’t hearing. She isn’t listening.
“And Solas-,“ she croaked. She receded. Said his name but thought of someone else. And Cole could finally grasp at a wisp of something, tug it, pull it closer and-
She moved back from the thought, retreated into pain she’d known before.
“The hundreds of hours that you two spent while we were travelling, talking about things no-one else could see or understand. You knew that Thom wasn’t Warden Blackwall before anyone else. Did you know this time as well? Who he was? What he was planning?”
Cole’s mind stilled.
“The thread between him and here was thin. Glowing, a beacon here and there at once. Wisdom’s friend was younger than the world, but older than his pain. Bitten into his goal, he cannot change, he cannot see, he has to mend what he has sharded.”
Amaryll across the room was shaking violently, so much so that strands of her greased hair were falling into her face, her wrinkly, sweat-soaked nightgown slipping off her shoulder.
“She says the little ones matter the most,” he continued, softer, with a regret that wasn’t his. “It’s the little ones that make things big. He pulls away and waits, hesitates, debates. A young man’s folly for an old man’s pain. A moment’s doubt is almost detrimental. Sacrifice it is either way. One unbearable, the other unthinkable. She almost changed his mind.”
A heartbeat’s pause from her, the swirls around her slowed as a breath caught in Amaryll’s throat. Then, quick and violent as a lighting bolt, her hands whirred through the air and slammed on the table. Cole flinched.
“Did you know?” the Inquisitor screamed. “Did you know what he was going to do?”
He exhaled with a push, then pulled his shoulders back. Too loud. Her rage, her hurt, her fear, they were too loud for her to hear.
“I didn’t,” Cole said with force. “There was aching, sorrow, pride from him. Solas never told me. He didn’t have to, for us to be friends.”
“And the elves?” Amaryll pushed. “Did none of them think of it? His plans to destroy Thedas? You said the Wolf was conflicted, and he wasn’t even of this world. Are you telling me they, who had grown up in it, felt… felt at peace with it?”
“I will lead us against Corypheus, and I will be an ambassador. I’m an elf standing for Thedas. The Inquisition is for all.”
Amaryll’s tense expression slid off her face at this quote. Colors around her stopped slashing, grew foggy, as she seemed to recall the day she took on her title.
“They thought him and I worked together,” she finally said, directed at the table. Her voice had grown meek, her pitch higher than usual. The elf swayed forward but caught the fall by pressing the palm of her hand to the table’s surface. “And the Qunari elves fulfilled the demand of the Qun. Of course there'd be no conflict there.”
Cole tilted his head, never letting her out of sight. He stepped closer and closer while she still wrestled herself. Just when he had almost reached the table, her gaze shot up and through him, as though it was one of her arrows.
“I hope you know where you stand,” she spit. "Because if the day comes and I call on you to stand against Solas and you won’t, then you better walk out now. Nobody would hinder or hunt you. But may the Creators have mercy on you if I ever saw you again, because I wouldn’t. I won’t suffer another friend turning their blade against me.”
For little while he felt like his tongue had been ripped out of his body, and a shattering clung in his mind. Cole looked at his friend and tried to understand. Tried to feel for her. But the way Amaryll looked at him made it difficult. He saw rage, righteousness, and lust for retribution. Except he’d never done anything to hurt her. He only ever sought to help.
The rainbow storm around her faded until it was undistinguishable from air. Never before had he experienced the sensation he did as he was staring back into the steeled eyes of the woman who used to always look at him with such kindness.
Little brother, she would call me. Now she is breaching boundaries that could break our bond. Sorrow shouldn’t drown out sympathy.
Cole straightened his back and lifted his chin. The steel in Amaryll’s eyes started flaking, her cheeks quivering. Slowly, the woman lowered her eyes, her face, until hair fell to cover it. The change came abruptly. Her back curved over the desk, and her body started clenching and unclenching like a fist. Drops of saltwater hit the wooden surface, and the first sob broke from her lips. By the time Cole reached her, Amaryll’s right hand had given way and her elbows were what was holding her up, with her face two inches at most from the desk. The woman sobbed uncontrollably, barely breathing.
Grief for lost souls and lost loves and lost lives. Grief for ruins and broken promises. Grief for a self she never knew. Grief for a future she cannot paint.
With his hands on each of her shoulders, he pulled her into a stand and to his chest. He met no resistance, only heated tears and an abyss that swallowed all the color in the room.
Eventually, the tremors ceased.
“Things out of sight don’t stop existing,” he murmured. “Not lives saved, not friends, not you.”
He pushed her away just enough to meet her puffy face. Amaryll did not smile, but she was neither bursting nor empty anymore. Just exhausted from the sudden swings, and her broken heart.
This was when Cole nudged her to turn and lead her out of the War Room. As soon he pushed the door open using his shoulder, there was a sound of swords being pulled out of their sheathing. Just as quickly as they were drawn, however, they were pushed back into place; Thom was the first to come and lend the rogue a hand. The Inquisitor was a small person even by elven standards, barely half a head taller than a dwarf. Tall, lanky Cole had a hard time steering her. But together with Thom, trailed by Cassandra, he accompanied the leader of the Inquisition as she stumbled ever forward - once again passive to her environment.
In the ambassador’s office, they were greeted by a distressed Josephine and a composed Leliana.
“What is the situation?” she asked immediately after looking over the Inquisitor and determining that she was not present enough to be directed any questions toward.
“I would like to know that as well,” Cassandra added from the back and walked around the small group that had come to a stand.
The walls raised high, but wind is beating them from both sides. None the wiser, often left without word.
“It’s all right,” Cole said, putting pillowy emphasis on every syllable. “She was scared and angry, but she is tired now. It’s not her fault. She needs to rest.”
“Agreed.” Thom bent over slightly to try and catch a glimpse of Amaryll’s face beneath the hair. “And a bath.”
“I shall call for one right away,” Josephine said.
Everybody was quiet for a moment. Cole felt a push, and he yielded.
“I will take her,” he offered, gently pulling her away from Thom.
His fingers miss her skin as soon as they leave it, every time there is an ache, a comfort in the warmth that he will never have. But he has her smile. It is for the best.
Slowly, carefully, Cole bent reached to put his hands back on Amaryll’s shoulders and herded her out. Back in her quarters, he placed her on the divan instead of her bed and crouched in front of her. She almost felt locked again, beside herself the way she’d been since the Winter Palace. But this time he knew better.
His friend felt everything at such a staggering intensity that her mind went blank. It didn’t take away the hurt, the love, the guilt, the fury, or the dread. But it buried it, until it was ready to resurface and break.
There had to be a solution. To the fear she felt that amplified everything tenfold.
Home lies under the gnarled tree in the tundra.
“This is a disaster,” Josephine pushed out from between her lips. “The leader of the Inquisition, lost in complete madness, wandering the fortress in nothing but dirty undergarments, looking like- like-”
“A beggar,” Cassandra completed.
“We have a bigger problem than her reputation, don’t we?” Thom countered with clear disapproval.
“Quite,” Josephine replied pointedly. “However, this does not mean that the Inquisitor’s reputation, and by extension the reputation of the entire organization, has ceased to matter simply because we are to be dissolved.” She breathed in, held it for a moment, and the others waited. “I don’t know how to spin this. How many people saw her?”
“Too many.” Cassandra lifted her chin. “Whispers were spreading as I was making my way here.”
“Indeed.”
Leliana removed herself from the tension of the circle and gracefully walked over to the fireplace. Josephine took this as a cue to move, as well, and retreated to the safety of her heavy wooden desk. There were no words to describe the way she was feeling. From the moment that the Inquisitor had appeared in her office, her heart had been sitting in her belly.
“Fortunately,” Leliana continued, “Lady Lavellan did not take any other route than the direct one here. I counted four of our noble guests talking in the Main Hall on my way here. Charter is tasked with keeping track of them and who they talk to. We cannot spin this, but we can muffle the words. Any letter sent out of Skyhold will be monitored and pulled as required.”
“Is that really necessary?” Thom objected. The Nightingale’s blank stare when she turned to look at him had his mouth go dry.
“Absolutely,” Josephine said decisively. “Rumors as to the Inquisitor’s state could severely damage our efforts to gracefully conclude the Inquisition’s time. They could also affect the people of Skyhold who depend on her good reputation in order to find employment after they leave. This must be kept quiet. For the Inquisition’s sake, as well as Lady Lavellan’s. We cannot have her turned into a tragic joke in the last few weeks of her time with us,” she concluded with a passion that prompted further silence from the others.
“Which brings us to the other matter at hand,” Cassandra began after a while. “Cole approached me yesterday about something he says might help.”
“What would that be?” Leliana asked.
“An oil. He- he said he looked into the ambassador’s trading manifests-“ Josephine’s mouth opened in protest. “-and found a shipment from the Free Marches that ought to arrive here in Skyhold soon. In two week's time. He suggested him and I ride ahead to retrieve it as soon as possible.”
“What manner of oil is this?” Josephine poked.
“I do not know.” Cassandra’s brows drew close over her darkened eyes. "From the gnarled tree, was all he said. Home.”
Whatever the round was thinking, each member held their tongue. Thom, however, was also keeping his eyes trained on the ambassador, whose face had shown a spark of recognition. A spark that was surrounded by discomfort that quickly retreated under a mask of neutral participation.
Thom was itching to prod. There was something about the way Lady Montilyet was hiding her thoughts.
“What do you think, Cassandra?” Leliana asked the warrior.
“In spite of his… nature, he has always been reliable. Him and the Inquisitor have been close friends. He may be holding the key to her betterment.”
“Rainier?”
Thom startled. “I say it’s worth a try, if nothing else. But what do we do if it doesn’t help?”
“I know of a few cloisters that would offer sanctuary to the Inquisitor,” was the Spymaster's reply. "The Revered Mother of one is known for her discretion. She would take good care of Lady Lavellan. If either of you,” she directed at the warriors, “would be willing to accompany her, then we could sort things in her absence.”
Cassandra said nothing to this suggestion, but Thom could read on her face that she was torn over it.
“Leave Skyhold weeks before the Inquisition ends?” he asked darkly. “Her friends, her only home?”
“It would be for the best. She would understand. The Inquisition has always been the most important thing to her, above all else.”
“I’m not sure she would agree if she were here.”
“Stop this,” Josephine interrupted sharply. “Her Worship might have an answer to this question, but as of now she cannot give one. We must work together and focus on controlling the damage.
“I agree with Rainier,” Cassandra said without ever once looking at him. “I wouldn’t feel comfortable riding with her in such a state. She can barely hold herself up to stand, how is she supposed to mount a horse? The Inquisitor is safest here, where we can have an eye on her.”
“While she slowly deteriorates, confined to her chamber?” Leliana challenged. “That is no kindness.”
None of them had seen or heard Cole enter, but suddenly he was there.
“It doesn’t have to be that way,” he said.

Chapter 6: Arsinoe
~Perth, Scotland/Glasgow, Scotland~
“And that would be another $300 to me, thank you very much Junior,” Arsinoe laughed as her soulmate begrudgingly handed her the monopoly money. Jane giggled behind her hand. She was the first to go bankrupt at her brother’s skilled hands, but Arsinoe had bought all of the monopoly skill she had gained from playing with Jules for years. She wasn’t backing down and it was amusing to all except for Billy, who she was basically robbing. Christine as the banker was also trying to hold back her laughter. Billy was after all, meant to be an expert in real world financing.
“I’m never playing Monopoly with you ever again. You’re just cruel,” Billy pouted, prompting Arsinoe to poke her tongue out before rolling the dice again, landing on another of her own properties.
It took two more rolls for her to be crowned champion, much to everyone’s surprise. It seemed that her partner was usually the reigning champion.
They left soon after, Jane hugging her before they did.
Billy walked her to her door and just before he turned to leave, she took a deep breath and spoke.
“Do you want to come in? I wanted to talk to you about last night,” Billy frowned and followed her in to the living room, where she told him to wait on the couch, before receding to her bedroom. She closed the door and leaned against it, taking a deep breath.
“Come one, Arsinoe, you can do this,” she says firmly to herself before going to her bedside table and picking up the photo frame that sat there. She glanced at it and returned to the living room, sitting at the opposite end of the couch to him and handing him the photo frame. She watched as he took in the photo taken on their 17th birthday, eating cake on a hospital bed. He takes it in before glancing to her, waiting for her to speak.
“Katharine is the bald one on the middle and Mirabella is the pretty one on the left. They are… were my sisters,” Billy’s eyebrows furrowed as if trying to figure something out. Arsinoe waited until his eyes lit up in recognition and then saddened.
“January 24th, February 1st,” Arsinoe nodded, her throat clenching. “Do you want to tell me about them?” Arsinoe nodded and let him take her hand in his own.
“Mira was older than me by 3 minutes and she was brilliant. After our parents decided they would rather get rich in Europe and Asia and left us an endless cycle of babysitters she became this super sister. She was beautiful, inside and out and she protected us like no one else would. Kat was younger by 10 minutes and she was the baby of us three. In high school, I got a suspension for breaking the nose of a boy that had hurt her. Mira and I both would have done anything to keep her safe. And then, just after our 16th…” she paused, brushing away the tears that had started to fall and taking a deep breath. “After our 16th, Kat started acting weird. She woke up one morning and had a seizure at the breakfast table. When we took her to the hospital… she had malignant brain cancer. Also known as the worst type of cancer you can develop,” as calm as she spoke, Arsinoe could feel her own throat tightening and she took another breath. Billy crossed the distance between the two and pulled her into his side. Arsinoe buried her nose in his ribs and tried not to sob. She hadn’t even finished telling the story yet. She pulls back from him and wipes away tears before continuing to speak.
“About a month after our 17th, I was with Kat at the hospital because the doctors had told us that she didn’t have much time left, so we were trying to spend as much time with her as we could. Anyway, she tells me that I need to go away and spend the day with my friends because Mira was on her way to the hospital. I only listened when she threatened to call security. I went to meet up with Jules and we were going to go to the movies. Just before we went in, I got a call from the hospital. I expected to be told that Kat had gone, but instead they asked if I was Mirabella’s sister,” she sobbed and Billy pulled her back to him gently, letting her sob grossly in his shirt until she was calm enough to continue. She didn’t miss the tears in his own eyes as she kept talking.
“Some asshole driving a semi-trailer wasn’t paying attention and had jack-knifed on the highway. He had swerved lanes and the car behind Mira didn’t break as fast as her. She died on impact,” she paused again.
“They put Kat on life support that night, told me that it was up to my parents to turn it off. When they called my mum, she told them to leave the choice to me. I pulled the plug the next week, after I had organised a funeral for the two of them,” Billy frowned.
“Where were your parents for all of this?” Arsinoe scoffed.
“On business in Tokyo. They came back to see the funeral they had paid for but eventually mum made such a scene that I kicked them out of the wake. I haven’t seen them since then and the last time we spoke I told them I was going to the army when I was 18. I’m better off without them anyway,” she sniffles and wipes her eyes. “Anyway, that’s it. So if you wanted someone with less baggage, the door is that way ,” she goes to stand and walk away away hurriedly only to be caught by Billy’s hand. He gently pulls her onto his lap and hugs her tight into his chest.
“I wouldn’t want anyone but you, Arsinoe. Why would your past make me want to leave someone so excellent,” she shook slightly, hugging her photo to her stomach and letting herself be calmed by his gentle hands at her back. “Besides, you didn’t think less of me for all that stuff with Jane so why would I think less of you for this?” He kissed her forehead and let his lips rest there, giving her time to calm down and rationalise her thoughts.
Eventually Arsinoe stands again, holding his hand still.
“Would you stay tonight?” Billy nods and stands, letting her lead him to her bedroom.
~
The first thing Arsinoe noticed when she woke up was that her curtains were open and sun was in her eyes. The second thing was Billy’s arm around her waist. She turned and watched him open his eyes. He smiled at her and she felt warm and fuzzy.
“Hi,” he whispered.
“Hi,” she whispered back.
“I love you,” her eyebrows rose slightly. It hadn’t been what she expected him to say at all.
“Do you want to come to a wedding in Croatia with me?” His eyebrows scrunched.
“Why?” Arsinoe shrugged as much as she could.
“Well if we’re in love and I’ve met your family, it’s only fair that you have to meet Jules and the rest of my crew sometime soon,” Billy smiled.
“How scary could that be?” Arsinoe laughed at his nonchalance.
“Jules is a Paralympic archer and Emilia is a decorated officer in the 2nd Commando Regiment in the army. So very scary,” Billy’s eyes widened only slightly.
“What exactly is 2nd Commando Regiment?” Arsinoe smiled and patted his chest.
“Special Forces. Kind of like Australian marines.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah. Are you okay? You’re looking a bit pale,” she leaned in and pressed a hand to his forehead, as though checking his temperature. He wasn’t pale at all, nor was his temperature rising, but goddess was it fun messing with him. But her teasing made his face calm and he grabbed her hand, kissing her palm.
“You know what? Sounds like fun. Maybe I can beat you a monopoly in front of your friends,” Arsinoe laughed and let him tug her into his arms.
“No can do. Jules says I’m not allowed to play monopoly with Emilia. We give each other bruises too often and then Jules quote unquote ‘has to deal with both of us’ and apparently we’re both pains in her ass so board games are no longer allowed. How good are you at Mario Kart?” Billy laughs.
“It’s been a while but I was a master at Rainbow Road,” Arsinoe gently pushes his shoulder with a scoff.
“I’ll believe it when I see it,” he kissed her.
“I love you,” Arsinoe smiled and kissed him.
“I love you right back.”

My midcentury modern renovation
After buying myself a duplex in Perth built in 1979, I decided it needed renovation. Little had been done to the house since it was first built so it was looking very tired and starting to collapse in places.  Building oversite was obviously not strict at this time as many roof beams were not nailed in place properly and the weight of the concrete tiles was collapsing the roof in the lounge area. This also resulted in the eaves dropping, allowing water to seep into these areas.  The glue holding up the ceiling in many of the rooms was also failing and many of the ceilings were collapsing. As such, these were the initial works I had engaged workmen to undertake. After these works were completed the roof was painted a very pale orange colour to reflect the sunlight and reduce the heat entering the roof space and solar panels were added to reduce my power bills.
Tumblr media
Then it was time to start renovating the inside. The lounge had a large window that overlooked the front garden which was beginning to leak so the first thing I did was replace it with wooden French doors. These open out onto a newly paved patio area with a patio built from the wood used in an old carport that someone advertised on Gumtree. The kitchen and dining room were dark brown brick walls with four arches. As arches were a feature of the retro era, I decided to keep three of these in the lounge/dining room wall so set about painting them with two coats of undercoat and two of a semi-gloss white paint. The bricks all had to be dusted first as they contained 30 years of dust and the whole job took me at least 2 weeks.  But it was worth all the work as they now provide a clean-looking, textured wall for this space.
Tumblr media
Next, I had to decide how I was going to renovate my kitchen. This small area was walled off with dark brown bricks on two sides and a small archway to communicate between the kitchen and dining room. This limited my ability to interact with guests while I was cooking. After much deliberation I finally chose to knock down both these brick walls, virtually gutting the whole kitchen area.  Next came the exciting task of designing my new kitchen. Two large windows and an air conditioner remained on the far wall so I had to include these in my design.  I had purchased green kitchen appliances to match a retro fridge I had bought at a second-hand shop a few years earlier so knew what colours I wanted, which is a big help when doing any renovation. The fridge had also influenced my decision to have a retro design for my house. After hours researching retro kitchens, I also knew the features I wanted including: drawers with cupboards underneath, a row of drawers and open, circular shelves at the end of the cupboards. I also wanted a small cupboard with glass doors on the wall, an island and a floor to ceiling pantry.
Tumblr media
I had already collected some Jason green kitchen cannisters for flour, sugar etc so knew I wanted some shelves to display these. Fortunately, my small-sized fridge allowed room for these shelves to be placed above it. I did a lot of research on-line until I found the right shade of green Laminex Laminate for the benchtop. Simon, at the kitchen renovation company I engaged to do the work, was a great help in deciding what was possible and what materials I could use. I wanted a matt finish so used a white Melamine Sheen for my doors and panels and found some retro-looking handles to place on them. I knew I needed as much white as possible with the dark green benchtop and chairs so decided a white stone benchtop would look best on the island.  I found a lovely white stone with a greyish-green fleck in it at the kitchen company which was just what I wanted.
Tumblr media
After the walls had been demolished my kitchen cabinets arrived and after looking at them, I realised the white was overwhelming and needed breaking up. To do this I asked for a small strip of green Laminex to be placed on the front of the exhaust fan and a larger piece to be placed on the back of the island where the green chairs would sit.  This made a big difference to the overall look of the kitchen as it helped to balance the colours and I’m really pleased I did this. After the kitchen had been installed, I then had to decide what tiles would be placed above the benchtop and what I would use for the splashback.
Tumblr media
I had visited a small shop in Fremantle that sells hand-made tiles of vintage design so researched their website and found some lovely tiles with a green art-deco design. Having only these tiles would have made the small area look too busy so I decided to scatter a few amongst some white tiles the same size. They were also very expensive so with this design I was able to do the tiling for a more reasonable cost. I tossed up whether to get a lovely picture on the splashback but decided in the end to get a plain colour as I didn’t want it to dominate the kitchen. I decided on a silvery-white look and did a bit of research trying to find something that would give me the look I wanted. In the end I went to a company that designs and sells splashbacks and found one that had a slight silvery sheen to it but it also had a greenish tinge to the glass. When it was installed the green was even more pronounced and it came out looking great with the green benchtop.
Tumblr media
Next, I needed to do the floor. I also wanted to replace the carpet in the dining room, lounge and passage and during my research found a company selling natural fibres which I liked the idea of. These are mostly made of jute, coir, sisal, wool sisal mixes and seagrass. I felt these carpets were more environmentally friendly and thought they might be less attractive to dust mites. After much deliberation I finally found one made of sisal I liked and had this installed. Then I needed to find a lino or tiles for the kitchen that would match the colours and retro look I had designed. I wanted green and white tiles but could not find them anywhere. My research led me to commercial linos and I found one in green that I liked. However, when I ordered it, I was told they had stopped making that design and I was provided with some other samples to choose from. The one I chose has actually turned out to be one of the best decisions I have made for the design of the kitchen. It is exactly the right colour and the pattern is also similar to that found in some older houses. Perhaps some things are meant to be….
Tumblr media
I had been buying second-hand furniture advertised on my local Gumtree website for years as I didn’t have much furniture when I shifted into the house and I like the retro style of furniture. Someone had sold me her grandmother’s sideboard which was lined with a blonde-wood Formica. A year or two after this I found a lovely dining suite in the same Formica style with 6 turquoise chairs that matched the colours in my lounge. This completed my dining area nicely.
Tumblr media
While I was waiting for my kitchen to be installed, I spent lots of time plastering, sanding and painting the walls in the lounge, foyer and kitchen area as these had had a lot of hard wear over the 30-odd years they had been painted. I mixed my own paint so I could get different shades in each room of the house. I wanted very light shades of blue and green which meant a lot of trial and error. (This ended with me having to sell a whole 4L tin of paint for $20 I had tinted but couldn’t use because it was too bright). I then decided to wallpaper the foyer wall. This wall consisted of a few pieces of gib-board that had been placed onto the wall and poorly joined. As a result, I had to do a lot of plastering and sanding. Then I bought lining paper and with the help of a friend, we placed the paper vertically across the wall to help cover the joins. I found that an English website, Spoonflower had by far the best wallpaper designs and after a lot of searching I found a retro, atomic design with the right colours I wanted. I had wallpapered a house before when I lived in New Zealand so had a fair idea what I was doing. I also found the new wallpapers with glue on the back are very easy to slide into place. The design on the wallpaper also helps to match each strip.
Tumblr media
I was so happy with the look of the foyer wall that I decided to put wallpaper on one of the walls in the lounge room.  I needed a wallpaper for this wall that wasn’t too bold or bright so that it didn’t conflict with the tartan in my lounge suite and that had an atomic look to it. Another extensive search on Spoonflower ended with me finding a new design that really suited the colours in my lounge suite – green, turquoise and blue.
Tumblr media
It is interesting how sometimes things just fall into place. Not long after completing the wallpapering of the lounge wall I noticed an advert for a second-hand lounge suite in exactly the right colour – turquoise - that was in the atomic style. I was able to buy this and renovate the wooden parts of it. The upholstery is a little faded in places but it is in reasonable condition for the age of the lounge suite so I didn’t have to spend much on it and it is perfectly suited to the wallpaper on the wall. It was also a plain colour which worked in well with the other tartan lounge suite I had already purchased a few years before.
Tumblr media
An art-deco style piano, an old stereogram that works and a retro-style coffee table make up the other furniture in this room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have also purchased other collectables on Gumtree or second-hand shops that help to enhance the retro look of the lounge room. Bright teal curtains and a green mat have finished off this room nicely. My last job is to renovate the coffee table top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The spare bedroom has also been renovated in a retro style. After fixing up the plaster and painting the walls, then varnishing the windowsill, I proceeded to paint a lovely retro dressing table I had acquired off Gumtree. I also found some interesting bedside lights and altered them to hang on the wall above the bed. Lastly, I have bought a brightly coloured new bedspread to brighten up the room. All that’s left to do is to renovate the bedside table.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This renovation has taken nearly 2 years with many hours of research and work. But it has been achieved using a modest budget. It has been a labour of love and I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to use my creative abilities to create a home that I really enjoy living in. I hope it gives somebody some ideas for how they can create a midcentury modern look to their home on a modest budget.

Amazon Spot Perth Reviews
Echo Spot floreat Reviews Amazon's variety of Echo gadgets are anywhere. In just a few short years audio products like the Dot as well as the Echo have actually gone from appealing uniqueness to house important - also amongst those that typically aren't usually fussed concerning the most recent tech. The Amazon Echo Spot is one of the later additions to the line up, adding a brand-new type factor, which is perhaps the best-looking of the bunch. Amazon Echo Spot at Amazon AU for $179. We think that the 2017 revamp of the Echo is an excellent suitable for many areas, while the industrial-looking tube of the Echo Plus makes it one to tuck into a gadgety shelf. The Echo Program has a big display, which is excellent for culinary videos for the kitchen area, however the Echo Spot, with its round shape and also built-in display, could rest anywhere. Certain it's subjective and relies on the design of your residence, but our team believe that it's a natural suitable for a bedside table or desktop computer, but this futuristic-looking window right into the globe of Alexa would certainly excite guests anywhere they locate it in your house and even your office. But although it could look wonderful, does the performance build up? Is a display that tiny as well as rounded in fact valuable? Can its speaker meet the high quality of the remainder of the variety? Read our complete Echo Spot review to figure out. Layout of the Echo Spot in Western Australia Although when it concerns functions and also performance it may be way more than a smart alarm, that's exactly what the Spot appears like. This suggests that for lots of people that might become its default usage, however actually it's method a lot more functional than that. The Amazon Echo Spot is unlike other Echo tool which's a good thing. Its rounded shell does sufficient making for its sibling's style failings. Where the big, cumbersome and also bold Amazon Echo Show took control of any location you put it in, no thanks to its brutalist black slab appearance, the Echo Spot is a lot more fine-tuned in its circular design. Remarkably, it transforms out that the most effective method to do a desk-based video clip device is to discard the TV-lite appearance and just go with something that's compact and also looks excellent. Technology companies, make note. But if you needed to place the Dot somewhere in the Echo line-up, it's a cross between an Echo Dot and also a smaller sized variation of the Amazon Show. This is no Echo Dot replacement, though - the price puts it out of opinion for that, as well as it's also a great deal better, so to claim it is would certainly be doing it an alexa amazon echo injustice. Size-wise, it's the matching of a mango. Mangos typically aren't the most clinical method to measure points, sure, however at the very least it offers you a sign that it's a rather small gadget with a rounded back and also screen that's angled up, makings it easy to view.
Tumblr media
It's a great-looking tool, definitely something you won't mind carrying show in your residence unlike the, emergency room, Program. Attributes and also configuration. The unit we examined was black but there's also a white one offered. The display is little, at 2.5 inches (480 × 480 pixels). On the top of the screen there is area for a video camera and on the top of the device in its entirety there are 3 buttons, which all rest flush against the surface for a really streamlined appearance.
Tumblr media
Anybody accustomed to the Echo range will recognize what they are: volume up, down and mute for the mic - this will certainly also disable the video camera. There are also 4 small pin-prick openings. These house the four-array mics that listen out for the wake word and for you barking commands at Alexa. On the back you have Amazon branding, a slot for power as well as a 3.5 mm jack. The audio speaker grill for the Spot is right at the base of the device, that makes it undetectable when seeing the Spot face-on. Bluetooth capability is additionally offered. Configuration resembles other Echo gadgets, other than for this you could key in your Wi-Fi information directly on the screen, rather of undergoing the Alexa app. It's a little fiddly placing in your details in this way (it will certainly request your Amazon account password, too) however the entire procedure will certainly take much less than five mins. When your Spot is working, you have the alternative to enjoy Amazon's promo video, which informs you what you could do with the device. It's not a work of art but it deserves sitting via so you get a suggestion regarding exactly what you have actually simply gotten. After that you obtain that warm chime noise, which suggests Alexa is on the internet and prepared to take orders. Once this appears it's a great time to review our ideal Amazon Alexa Abilities post or you can follow the motivates that turned up on the screen. Conversely, you can swipe right on the display which will raise an entire load of Alexa commands you could make use of. It's a truly good means to discover exactly what to do with Alexa. If you're looking for some enjoyable and ridiculous additionals, offer our Alexa Easter Eggs list a try, also. These triggers could be switched off in the Spot's setups. It's right here in the settings where you can toggle house cards on an off as well. The house cards are information that comes up on the house screen.

Here In This Moment
For @bluepianoguyismael who asked for Fitzsimmons + ‘you did all of this for me?’ I hope you like it!
Fitz cracks one eye open and winces at the sunlight. Frowning, he checks the alarm clock at the bedside table.
09:37
Well that’s… odd.
Groaning, he stretches and reaches over to the other side of the bed. His hand only brushes empty sheets but it doesn’t concern him too greatly – it’s not as though he expected Jemma to still be in bed at this time. No, what does concern him is the fact that he’s still asleep and wasn’t awakened out of bed by Jemma leaving it. Also, the fact that he’s been allowed to sleep for this long. In their little holiday from Shield they have taken to sleeping later, but Jemma is still usually up and at it by 8:30, ready to get involved with incredibly habitual tasks that she has taken up since saving the world. Fitz gets in on it too, of course, because it’s fun and easy and so incredibly nice to see her happy and carefree again.
“Jemma?” He calls, voice still clouded from sleep.
There’s no answering call and his heart begins to beat a little faster. He tries to shush it but it thumps as loud as ever in his ears. It’s something he’s been trying to work on, but so much has happened and he feels that it’ll be a while before he’s completely comfortable to waking up without her being where he thought she’d be.
“Jemma?” he calls again, a little louder. Fitz is well and truly awake now, and he slips out of bed and throws on some clothes, a little bit of his heart having leapt into his throat. He throws open the bedroom door with a little more force than is probably necessary and begins to walk down the hallway. Everything appears normal, but he has been with Shield for too long and he knows that appearances are deceiving; what is evil appears to be good, who is a traitor appears to be your friend.
The second he hears music playing outside the closed living room door, his heartbeat returns to normal rhythm. This is Jemma; she’s been playing the charts for the last few weeks in an attempt to catch up on the past five years she hasn’t had the time to.
Fitz knocks on the door, easing it open. “Jemma,” he calls for a third time, smiling when he hears her singing.
She doesn’t hear him – she’s standing in the corner of the room trying to tack up a banner, wobbling precariously on a chair. He doesn’t know if it’s her knowledge of physics or sheer dumb luck that the chair doesn’t topple over, but eventually she gets down and gives a nod. He can only imagine the look of satisfaction on her face.
“What’s going on in here?”
“Fitz!”
Jemma spins around, eyes wide with surprise. Then, all of a sudden, she deflates a little bit. “I can’t believe you’re up. It was supposed to be a surprise.”
Surprise? He’s confused for a moment, but then actually stops to take in the room. There are balloons littered all over the floor in a kaleidoscope of colours that makes him a little bit breathless. There are banners on all four walls, proclaiming their multi-coloured ‘congratulations’. On the coffee table in front of him, there are two boxes – one large, one small – wrapped in monkey wrapping paper.
“It’s definitely a surprise,” Fitz confirms.
“No,” Jemma moans. “A proper surprise. I was going to make you pancakes for breakfast and everything.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Pancakes? They would be great.”
“Yeah, well, you had to go and wake up early so I didn’t get to make them now, did I?”
Jemma huffs but comes over to kiss him good morning. The last traces of fear have vanished from his mind but even still, he hugs her; lightly, so as not to betray that he ever was worried. Leaving an arm around her waist, he gestures to the room. “What’s all of this?”
Jemma looks up at him, and he feels that it should be obvious. “Your birthday.”
“My birthday was weeks ago.”
“I know that. And I know we already celebrated and I got you something but I was still sorting all of this and I wanted it to be absolutely perfect before giving it to you.” She beams up at him. “Do you want to open them?”
Fitz does want to open them, and very badly, but before he lets curiosity get the better of him, he just wants to appreciate the way Jemma is looking at him right now. Her eyes are burning with fervour and her smile is excited and his heart swells with love. This Jemma Simmons, with enthusiasm radiating off of her in waves and her smile bright enough to light an entire continent, this is his favourite. This is what he loves most about their absence from Shield because they have gotten to heal, she has gotten to heal and if there was ever any doubt that taking a few months was the right decision, it is banished by the radiance she gives off just now. It takes his breath away.
“Go on then.” Fitz smiles, and Jemma leads him over the coffee table. He looks at the gifts and then back at her. She’s practically fizzing with excitement. “Is there one I should open first?”
“The big one first,” she replies decisively, no hesitation.
It’s the exact opposite thing his mum used to say to him when he’d open his gifts as a child so he’s already intrigued. Gently tearing away the wrapping paper, he hears a noise of impatience from behind him. To wind her up, he goes a little bit slower.
“Ugh, Fitz!”
Mission accomplished. Moving his fingers quickly, he tears off the remaining shreds and is left with a brown cardboard box. He looks at Jemma expectantly.
“Go on,” she encourages. “Open it.”
And, because he’s never been able to deny her anything, he does.
Inside is a framed picture of a house. A large, white, Georgian-style house surrounded by trees and with the outline of hills that he would know anywhere visible in the background. It’s charming, and lovely, but he can’t quite understand why it would be given to him for his birthday.
Jemma is practically bursting with excitement beside him, waiting on his reaction. There must be something more. Gently laying down the picture, he peers into the box and finds, unexpectedly, a set of small gold keys. An idea begins to form in his mind. Fishing out the keys, he turns to Jemma.
“This is our house?”
She nods quickly. A smile begins to take over his face of his own accord. “Really?”
“Uh-huh! Do you like it?”
“It’s amazing, Jemma. Just… wow.”
“I was worried that you wouldn’t like it,” she explains hurriedly. “Buying it without you and everything… it’s not exactly in Perth, around fourteen miles west, but Auchterarder has more than enough for the daily amenities and there’s enough space to have our own lab, and plenty of guest-bedrooms for when our families and the team come to visit and-”
He holds up a finger to stop her, though he could really listen to her babble for longer but there’s a question he has to ask. “Perth? That’s in Scotland.”
She smiles at him ever so softly and gives a gentle eye-roll. “I know where it is, Fitz.”
And oh, the reminder of the original conversation and all the events leading up to it combined with this knowledge that he and Jemma are moving to Perth together makes his need to hold her that much stronger. He kisses her and hugs her fiercely. Maybe she’s thinking the same too, because she squeezes back just as tight.
“Thank you,” he whispers. “Thank you so much.”
“You don’t have anything to thank me for, Fitz,” she says. Then, letting go and pulling back she says to him quietly, “You still have one more to open.”
This box is thin and rectangular, dwarfed by the larger one next to it. Fitz looks to Jemma, and notes how she seems almost nervous at this one. He raises an eyebrow but she brushes him off and gestures for him to continue.
He prises off the lid and unwraps the tissue paper inside. If he thought the last one was a surprise, then he obviously hadn’t bargained on this.
Four pregnancy tests. Four positive pregnancy tests.
His heart stops. The world stops spinning but only for a second. He turns to Jemma, and cannot stop the grin spreading over his face once more, so wide he feels as though it may split in two.
“You’re…” and he cannot finish, cannot articulate a coherent sentence.
Jemma appears to have the same problem, because she only nods. He’s pulling her towards him again, holding her and kissing her. Tears have appeared on his face from out of nowhere. Anything could happen now, anything at all, and he wouldn’t care because he and Jemma are moving to Scotland and they’re going to have a baby. He’s going to be a father.
He pulls away but only slightly, and rests his forehead against hers. “We’re going to have a baby,” he whispers through his smile.
“Yes,” Jemma whispers back, “We are.”
And oh, how he has to hold her again, cannot stand any space between the two of them. How magnificent is this. How utterly and truly magnificent.
“You really do like it, Fitz?”
Jemma’s small, barely heard question, muffled by his shirt, makes him laugh. Pulling away, he cups her face with both of his hands. Her smile could move mountains, and how is it now that he’s only just realising?
“I love it,” he confirms. “God, Jemma, this is perfect. And you did all of this for me?”
“You’ve saved me in more ways than I will ever be able to count. You deserve this.”
Damn, doesn’t she get it? She saved him. She’s always saved him. She keeps on saving him. By his side the whole damn time.
“I love you,” he says, so passionately, more passionately than he ever may have said it in his entire life.
“I love you too.”
They kiss and it’s the amalgamation of all the perfection of this day. If someone cut him right here, right now, nothing but light would spill out.
“And you’re really okay with the house and everything?” She asks as she pulls away.
“Of course.”
“I checked and there are very good schools in the area – both independent and state.”
“Of course you did.”
“And I know the interior is a little dated but that’s the beauty of it - we can renovate and-”
Fitz shushes her with another kiss.
But there is something he has to say. “Thank you, Jemma.” And he means for more than this.
“Always, Fitz.” She smiles and rests her forehead against his once more. “Always.” She worries her bottom lip. “I mean, this was right, wasn’t it? It was perfect?”
How can he explain it to her? That everything she does to him is perfect. That it is some miracle, what they have. That it is beyond perfect to be loved by her.
So he goes for one thing that is true:
“This was more than perfect. This was everything.”
The look she gives him is one of utter love and adoration and he understands what it all means, what the poets say, why wars have been waged for it.
Because this love, because Jemma, is everything. Because it’s fighting for that one chance at happiness. Because it’s almost drowning and dying and travelling through time and tearing holes in the universe to be with each other.
Standing here, right now, with his pregnant fiancée, with the keys to their new house, Fitz knows that, without a doubt, he’d do it all over again.

It’s not often we hear of an Australian tenant undertaking renovations to the residential property they’re renting, but if this project is anything to go by, maybe we should!
Prior to a renovation by Ohlo Studio, this Cottesloe apartment (a beachside suburb about 12 kilometres west of Perth’s CBD) was basic and uninspiring, but its location and ocean views made it the ideal rental property.
With plans to rent the home for another five years, the tenant asked the landlord for permission to cosmetically renovate the living area and bedrooms, and an agreement was made. (By the way, new laws have just come into effect in Victoria making modifications to all rental properties a little easier!)
‘There was some negotiation, but my client was making improvements, so the landlord was happy,’ says Ohlo Studio director Jen Lowe.
Ohlo Studio’s job was to vastly improve the apartment, without spending large sums on the base build. Aesthetically, the client was after a’ ‘Sydney art deco meets Palm Springs mid-century’ look with a ‘seaside eclectic’ feel and ‘slightly masculine edge.’
‘We were concerned this could turn into scrambled eggs, so we pulled elements from these references without being too literal,’ Jen says. ‘The major inspirations were the seaside location, exposure to vast blue skies, the client himself, and the opportunity to have some fun.’
Ohlo replaced the faux timber vinyl floors, unattractive exposed electrical solutions, and damaged finishes with an entirely new interior scheme. Maximum impact was achieved by relocating the main areas of activity (the dining area, lounge room, and TV area) in accordance with the property’s best views, and installing a cost-effective bold floor tile. Wall colours meanwhile were darkened, new carpets installed, light fittings upgraded, and dimmers added throughout the home, without disrupting existing services locations.
Much of the project budget was allocated to furniture and decor pieces intended to stay with the client for many years. These include statement designer items, alongside those less expensive, such as simple locally-made steel shelving. The coffee and dining tables were also custom made, providing the client with unique pieces, while introducing timbers and forms specific to the apartment’s scheme.
‘When our client relocates in five years time, he will have a great furniture and art collection that will age well, and the cost of the fit-out spread over the five years will have been economical for the use and impact it provided,’ Jen says.
Visit this home today and it has a completely new atmosphere not only beneficial to the client, but also the landlord, who will benefit from the updated apartment for decades to come. Jen says, ‘It has transitioned from a rundown student rental feel to a refined, relaxed place of respite and joy.’

Chapter Fifty Three - Let Me Catch You Up To Speed
Tumblr media
In less than 2 days, I was fully finished up with working in the studio and starting maternity leave. Josh was more than relieved that I would be at home more often, but still concerned that I would get bored easily or wouldn't have much to do. I wasn't really in the mood to do much, as by now it was the start of April, and the wedding planning was in full swing. The planning was taking up the majority of my time, between fixing the menus, the decorations, the seating plan... the list was endless!
Josh was still on the Oceania leg of the Emotional Roadshow Tour, and was beginning to get sick of being away from home and the bump. He had left the country with Tyler, Jenna and the crew on March 22nd and had one more show on the 8th in Perth before he could fly home and relax for a little while before the wedding and the resuming the North America portion of the tour.
I'd been kept busy so far with Doctors appointments, check ups and wedding planning. So far, I didn't know the sex of the baby, I wanted to be surprised, I handed the envelope containing the information over to Jenna and Tyler for safe keeping! I had told them they could know, and Josh too if he wanted, but not to tell me until closer to the time.
Josh was currently near Perth, and 13 hours ahead of me, meaning when he video called me just before bed, it would be closer to breakfast time for me.
"So we have the show coming up tonight, and then I swear as soon as we finish, I'll head straight to the airport and I'll be home with you as soon as I can!" Josh looked exhausted, probably not sleeping much with us being on opposite sides of the world.
"As much as the baby and I can't wait to see you, just make sure you're staying safe and doing what you have to do before you get home!" I smiled, trying to reassure Josh that we would be okay in the meantime.
"I know Ava, but it's just so difficult being away from you both! I know we have friends and family there with you, but it just doesn't feel the same y'know! I want to be with you every step of the way, not missing anything." By this time, I was 5 and a half months along, more than halfway through the pregnancy, and I knew it felt like Josh was missing out.
"I think the most exciting thing is that I have a lot more stretch marks now!" I laughed, lifting my top and turning to the side so Josh could see.
"You still look as beautiful as ever, just means our little bun is getting bigger and healthier every day!" Josh smiled at us. As small as extra stretch marks seemed, it was something huge to us. We were so excited at every milestone and new occurrence, apart from the random nosebleeds that had began to happen at odd times- apparently a common side effect of being pregnant for some women! So glad to be one of the lucky ones... not!
As I turned back I could feel a hard kick just below my ribs, causing me to exclaim "Ouch!" loudly.
"Are you okay? What's wrong, Ava, do you need me to come home?" Josh jumped up, panic written all over his face.
"No, no, no! Everything is okay, the baby just didn't like me moving, that's all! They're getting stronger by the day, I can't wait for you to feel the kicks soon! It feels like we're going to have another drummer in the family!" I laughed, rubbing my hand over the spot where I'd felt the kick. Josh instantly began to calm down, looking relieved at the simple explanation. We were interrupted by a loud knock on the door, before Tyler entered the room.
"Hey, we have an interview in about 20 mins and then we have a soundcheck in about an hour- hey Ava! What are you doing up so late?" Tyler walked over to Josh and sat next to him, beginning to chat to me.
"Hey Tyler, it's not really that late, it's only-" I paused turning my head to check the time on the clock on the bedside table. "Oh, it's 2am! I didn't think it was so late!" Josh quirked his eyebrow at me, as Tyler shook his head.
"You should probably be in bed, get some rest and we'll call you after the show, okay?" Tyler suggested, while Josh agreed. Tyler then said his goodbyes and left the room so Josh and I could say our goodbyes too.
"I promise I'll be home as soon as I can! Look after yourself and the baby and I'll be cuddling you and making you endless cups of tea again before you know it!" Josh smiled, waving and telling me he loved us before hanging up.
================================================================
I woke up around 9am with a start, there was a loud banging coming from the front door. I pulled on a pair of leggings and a tight T-shirt, dressing quickly before sliding my feet into a pair of fluffy sliders. My usual Adidas sliders were now far too small and uncomfortable for my swollen feet and ankles.
I moved as fast as I could to the front door as the knocking continued, making me question the importance of my early visitor. As I opened it, I was greeted by Jordan holding a large parcel box. "Hey, sorry I hope I didn't wake you up? I was too excited to wait any longer, it's been sat in our house for 10 minutes now!"
I laughed as I let him in, carrying the box before he set it on the kitchen table. "I was almost awake anyway, besides I'm excited to see what this is!"
Jordan gave me a big hug, before finding a pair of kitchen scissors so we could open the box. "I swear that baby gets bigger every time I see you, and I only saw you a few days ago!"
"Tell me about it! Do you want to see the latest trick? C'mere!" I grab Jordan's hand, placing it on top of the bump, before asking the baby, "Hey, Josh will be home in a few days, are you ready to see daddy? Are you all excited to cuddle daddy again?"
A shocked look appeared on Jordan's face as he realised how hard the baby kicked. "Woah that's some kick! She's excited to see daddy for sure! When is he due home?"
"It should take him about a day and a half to fly back, so hopefully I'll see him tomorrow afternoon? Maybe tomorrow evening at the latest? Not too long to wait, but you know I'll just be wishing the time away until then! So anyway, what's in the box?" Jordan smiled, handing over the scissors for me to open it.
I began to carefully open the box, removing the layers of packaging tape, only to be met with little mesh bags of flower petals and biodegradable confetti resting on top of the white tissue paper. I raised an eyebrow at Jordan who grinned and shrugged. He clearly knew what it was, but wouldn't ruin the surprise. I carefully lifted the delicate bags out, placing them on the table beside the box. Pulling back the layers of tissue paper, I could see a beautiful blush coloured material, adorned with diamanté's. It wasn't until I pulled it fully out of the box that I realised why I thought the shade looked familiar! It instantly brought back memories from when Josh and I had gone out on our date the first time he was expected to propose. We had stopped by a bridal shop on our walk back to the hotel, and I had seen the most beautiful dress.
"It's the dress you saw when you were in Lincoln, Josh called the shop and asked what they could do, he explained that you would be almost 7 months pregnant when you're ready to get married, but that you had your eye on this dress before you were even engaged. He also asked them to tweak the dress a little so it wouldn't be the exact copy of the one you both saw. So it's like he hasn't seen the dress before the wedding. No more bad luck!" Jordan smiled as my eyes began to fill with tears, I couldn't believe Josh had gone to all this trouble! As I laid the dress on the table, I could see the changes Josh had made, the bottom of the dress had a subtle cotton Candy pink ombré trim that faded into the blush coloured dress. The fabric was almost a jersey style material, allowing for growth while still holding tight to the bump, and at the back of the dress at the bottom of the skirt, the words "Dun and Dun" were embroidered into the train with a golden thread. It was so perfect, better than I had ever hoped.
"Jordan, it's perfect, he did such an incredible job!" I tried to hold back tears, as Jordan beamed beside me. It wasn't a traditional dress, the same way that Josh and I didn't have a traditional relationship, so it was a perfect match.
"You still have a matching veil, that should arrive in the next few days, along with your shoes. We're getting so close to you becoming my sister in law officially!" Jordan explained, everything was all tying together quickly and there was definitely excitement in the air. "I think we're going to pick our suits on Wednesday, so that gives Josh some time to get home and get settled back in again before we get into the final preparations right?"
I nodded agreeing with Jordan. "Well that would give me time to invite Jenna round to try on the dress and make any alterations necessary, then I think we have planned to start making little party favours?" Everything was coming together nicely! For a relationship that had blossomed so quickly, to becoming a family in such a short time, it still felt like this wedding and birth was a long time coming. It wouldn't be long before Josh and I were finally Mr and Mrs Dun, and then only a little longer before our child would make their debut.
********************************************
Hi long time no update! So the photos give an idea of what I think the dress would look like just to give you an idea. Hopefully this chapter isn't too bad as I'm definitely rusty at writing! There will be a time jump in the next chapter, but excited for it, as that chapter has been sat in my drafts since 2017! As always, let me know what you think! Xo

Small Bedroom Ideas to Make Your Room Bigger
Small bedrooms can be as grand and as comfortable as any big bedrooms too. This small bedroom ideas below aims to help you design your private small spaces at home!
Our bedrooms are our sanctuary. It’s our own piece of private space where we can be ourselves, without inhibitions. If your bedroom is small and you think there are no ways to improve it, then think again!
Designing small bedrooms can be pretty tricky. Especially if you have no idea on where to start. There are a lot of factors to consider and it can be very overwhelming. But with the right information, tools, furniture and design you can certainly do so!
How To Fit Furniture on a Small Bedroom
One of the first question that home owners think of when looking for small bedroom ideas is how to fit furniture in the room.
Now, a lot of us probably love to have everything that can make the room be as cozy and as comfortable as possible.
But the truth is, we can’t fit any furniture that we want. Every piece of small bedroom furniture that you’ll be putting in should be calculated in with the rest.
Below are some effective points to consider when arranging furniture to small bedrooms:
1. Measure the big furniture.
The first thing you need to do is to identify and measure the big furnitures first. This includes the bed, the dresser, the tables and chairs. And include the size of the bedroom too.
Take note of the measurements and write them down on your notepad or jot it down to your iPad/ tab. You’ll be using it as a reference later on.
While you are at it, take note of the available outlets inside the room. You’ll need the information once you start arranging your furniture.
2. Prioritise the bed.
The bed is usually the biggest furniture in the bedroom. Meaning it will take up more space than the rest.
That being said, the bed should be the first thing you need to consider when arranging the furniture in small bedrooms. Once you know where it should be placed, arranging the rest of your furniture will be a whole lot easier.
Pro Tip: Place the bed lined up against one wall on the opposite side of the doorway. Or if you still have more room, place it on the centre of the most visible wall. Make sure that you have enough room alongside the bed to easily get up and get in.
3. Optimize your clothes’ space.
The next thing to go inside the room is the dresser. If you still have space, tuck your chest or dresser in the closet. You’ll have more room for the rest of your stuff and all your clothes will be located in one area.
Pro Tip: Remember to keep enough space between the dresser or your closet that you can open all drawers and doors.
4. Let the smaller furniture in.
Once your closet/ dresser is inside, it is now time to focus on the smaller items like nightstands and desk chair.
When arranging item, take this opportunity to eliminate unwanted furniture and de-clutter your stuff to save up more space.
5. Mimic day-to-day routine.
When everything is settled in, try moving around the room. For example, try going into the bed and getting up. You may also try to open drawers and closets and even sit down on your desk chair.
Make sure that you don’t bump into something when you move about. If you do, then you may need to rearrange the furniture again for a more convenient movement around the room.
Small Bedrooms Layout Ideas To Maximise Space
Now that we have covered the ways to fit in furnitures, next is to find the appropriate layout for your small bedroom.
Below are some popular layout ideas to maximise space that you may want to look into:
1. The L-Shaped Layout
The L-Shaped layout is an arrangement where the furniture is lined-up along two walls of a square bedroom. This type of small bedroom layout creates a cozy corner for the occupants to enjoy in. It also opens up the rest of the room and makes the space feel less boxy.
2. The Long Layout
The Long layout is an arrangement wherein the bed and the desk are lined up in a row along the same wall. This small bedroom layout helps to clearly define the sleep and work areas.
What Colours Are Good for Small Bedrooms
One of the most preferred colours when painting a small bedroom is white. As it is believed that white makes the room looks larger. While this can be true, stark white can make any bedroom feel cold.
If you want, add some wallpaper on your room walls too to brighten it up. Remember to use large-scale patterns and place it to a focal wall, like your headboard wall. Don’t forget to coordinate the colours to your beddings too!
For colour selection, here are some varying shades of colour that you can use for your bedroom!
1. Deep Colours
Deep colours on small bedrooms can camouflage the size of the space. The furniture, drapes and accessories should also complement that wall colour. You may also layer varying shades of the same colour in your trim, floors, rugs and windows.
Pro Tip: Remember to stick with colours that make you feel comfy and cozy.
2. Earth Tones and Neutrals
Earth tones and natural colours for small bedrooms are usually preferred to enhance the feeling of space. Neutral colours, in fact, can make the wall visually raced into the background. It also brings the attention to the accessories in the room.
3. Soft Tones
Soft tones like cream, butter and ivory are ideal choices to make the room feel bigger, but not too cold. You can layer complementary shades of white or some other favourite colours you love.
Pro Tip: Stick to white for your ceilings as it makes the ceiling look more higher leaving the cramped feeling.

Key Points to Remember for Maximising Small Bedroom Spaces
Don’t we all love it when we get to save space and ultimately fit in everything we want in our bedrooms?
Here are some pretty cool tips you have to remember when designing your small bedrooms:
1. Skip the bulky bed frame.
No matter how much we love the design, forget the bulky bed frames. And this includes that king-size (or even queen) bed you want. Instead, use space-saving furnitures.
2. Add a rug in your bedroom.
It can help make a small room look bigger. It also adds softness, and introduce colours or patterns that tie your small bedroom design together.
Design key points: if the bed is centered, slip the rug about 2/3 of the way under. If it’s in a corner, put the rug next to it or under another piece of furniture.
3. Get creative with storage.
Another good way to fit furniture in small bedrooms is by getting creative with storage spaces. In truth, the way you store your stuff is one of the keys to a great small bedroom design.
Pro Tip: Use under-bed storage and custom-shelving to free up space. Store your little things like books, paperworks and footwear here. You may also look into dual-purpose storage-spacers like an ottoman for keeping your stuff and at the same time have some extra seats.
4. Go minimal.
Often we get sentimental with things, that we can’t help but keep them even if we don’t need it anymore. This also applies to when we keep things in our bedroom.
Going minimal means reducing your stuff and leaving your favourite essentials. By doing so, you also adds space to your bedroom.
5. Expand with mirrors.
Add more space (at least visually) with mirrors. You don’t need to have the floor-to-ceiling ones, body-length size or horizontal mirrors that are shoulder-length will do.
Pro Tip: Enhance the natural light in your bedroom by positioning a mirror to reflect the light of a window.
6. Adopt vertical spaces.
For spaces with higher ceilings, you may consider adding a loft or platform for your bed with storage and/ or seating space underneath. Make sure that the person using the bedroom is willing to climb up and down just to go to bed, though.
7. Make use of floating shelves.
Another space-saver are floating shelves. It will not take any floor space at all and will definitely be functional. Use it as a nightstand replacement, a bookcase, a laptop desk and so much more.
8. Create an alcove or wall niche.
If your room is set up on non-exterior wall with wood beams inside, cut out an alcove for additional shelves. The space may not be too deep, but it can definitely give you more space for your small items.
Small spaces can be very interesting to work on, especially if you love designing. But as they say, there are ways to work around it, as long as you have the right information and tools.
