Tuesday 12th March 2019
It is autumn now, the starting date being first of March. The weather has been extremely good though, but we do notice that the sun fills our little garden later day by day and the days are getting shorter. We fly home on Friday night, and with news of bad weather at home, we are making the most of the sunshine and heat while we have it.
By chance when we were in Perth central the other day, we happened to spot a poster advertising Ralph Mctell in concert at the Heath Ledger theatre for tonight, one night only, so we booked straight away. We never thought any more about it until this morning when it suddenly occurred that this just might not be the Ralph Mctell from home, but someone local who does bird impressions and makes animals with balloons or something. We just paid 60 bucks to watch a man dash around the stage pretending to be a budgie!
Well we needn't have worried, it was okay, because when we showed up at the theatre there was a picture of him with a Gibson guitar. The concert was fantastic, very intimate with the size of the venue. He has played Australia before and seems to have a love of the place. He spoke of growing up in Croydon and the influence of Blues, blind black American musicians and Bob Dylan in his song writing and poetry. His lyrics are so perfectly formed. I was struck particularly with one line that said 'i am writing with my finger in the dust that falls from dreams’. What poetry! Ralph is 75 this year and he no longer looks like his image on the sheet music I have of Streets of London, but I guess who would. At least he didn't come on stage with a Zimmer frame, and his voice was as strong and steady as ever. Martine admits seeing him at the Birmingham Odeon 47 years ago! Great night out. Loved it. The theatre was filled with radio 4 type people, all of an age and appreciating every note. Those able gave him a standing ovation at the end of the performance before dashing home for an early night. Tomorrow he goes to Adelaide, then Melbourne. He has already played Sydney.
We had arrived in Perth early bought a meal in the food hall and taken it down to Elizabeth Quay to eat it as the sun went down. Considering we were next to the CBD, and it was for many, after work, the place was deserted. Not a soul around, apart from 2 attendant seagulls who patiently had designs on our meal. We compared this to Canary Wharf, a business district which at this time of day would see bars and cafes heaving with young professionals This theme continued firstly at Perth Central station after the concert, hardly anyone there, or at Fremantle station at the far end of the line, then walking home through the streets of Fremantle passing empty, closed pubs at 10.30pm. Even the backpackers pub was closed. These Aussies certainly know how to let their hair down. It's when they've taken their teeth out, had a mug of cocoa and gone to bed!

And made our stay unforgettable! We were on our babymoon in Australia. And I will never forget how special she made this for us. She arranged an early check-in due the fact that I am heavily pregnant. She surprised us in our room with chocolate, macaroons, strawberries, marshmallows and stuffed Kangaroos for my little baby boy of 2. Personal congratulations notes and also congratulations written in chocolate on the plates! I cannot describe how this made us feel. Could not stopped smiling. She was constantly available if we needed anything. Room was very clean, super comfy bed/pillows and breakfast is amazing! They even make baby chinno’s for toddlers! Super child friendly. Also, when we visited their restaurant for a Christmas dinner, their chef spoilt us for vegetarian choice (in spite the menu not having many vegetarian options). Special mention to Jeff (the chef), he mentioned I wanted your dinner to be spl, so had all these cooked for us. Also, that continued during our breakfast when we mention we do not eat egg, the waiter suggested some good options which we thoroughly enjoyed. Also, the hospitality was beyond our expectations from the entire staff.

Like many first home owners, Sophie Bowers and Josh Climpson struggled to enter the property market for a long time until ‘perseverance and a little luck’ led them to this 1920s apartment.
Located in Kensington, six kilometres south-east of the Sydney CBD, the building is believed to have been built for horse jockeys working at the nearby racecourse. While the apartment was dated and small, Sophie and Josh saw potential in its original art deco features. ‘We were drawn to a home which had quirks, flaws and a ton of character,’ says Sophie. ‘We saw past the carpet, unnecessary walls, and ‘50s kitchen and bathroom renovation. We saw a space that was a diamond in the rough, and jumped on the opportunity.’
Sophie is the founder of Strutt Studios Interior Architecture, and renovating this space has been her most loved project to date. After moving into the apartment in late 2017, the couple spent 18 months living in the space, learning what exactly was required for future renovations.
Function became the key driver of the project, resulting in the floorplan being significantly altered. ‘Through clever manipulation of the floor plate and by removing one 500mm thick wall separating the kitchen and dining area, we have been able to add in features and spaces completely unique to any other apartment in the block, including a laundry, dishwasher, bathtub and over three times the storage cupboards,’ explains Sophie.
Three main sources of inspiration underpin the interiors, the first being original design features including pink terrazzo flooring, and brass curved light fittings. Sophie set out to reimagine these details in a contemporary manner, as seen in the terrazzo kitchen flooring and unsealed brass fixtures.
Another inspiration was a commissioned artwork by Melbourne artist Bobby Clark, created to commemorate the couple’s wedding. This artwork is reflected in architectural additions such as the curved arches to the doorways – a small feature that draws Sophie’s eye everyday. ‘Not only did this frame the transition spaces beautifully, but it was also a contemporary take on the heritage bones of the apartment,’ says Sophie. Finally, original fluted glass was a further influence, as shown in the tight, linear pattern on cabinetry and the shower screen.
Sophie usually recommends clients bring in colour through furnishings instead of materials in such a small space, but in this case, the abundance of natural light allowed her to be more playful. The upholstery selection for the banquette seat is a particularly special piece, showcasing a combination of velvet on the base, and custom leather straps with marble fixings for the back. Norwegian rose marble in the bathroom and dusty pink tiles throughout add a splash of femininity, balanced with a simple scheme of white floorboards and soft grey walls (Dulux Manorburn Double).
Every item in this home from the dining chairs, to the handles, cushions, and the towels was carefully considered, leading to the cohesive home you see today. Sophie says, ‘While the overall design scheme of dusty pink, black and brass is a bold one, the nod to this apartment’s previous life is what makes the design special.’

Elevating Sleep Quality: Understanding the Importance of Bed Frames in Sydney CBD
Tumblr media
Bed frames play a crucial role in not only providing support and stability to mattresses but also enhancing the overall aesthetics and functionality of bedrooms. In Sydney CBD, where space is often limited, choosing the right bed frame is essential for maximising space utilisation and creating a stylish and comfortable sleeping environment. In this article, we explore the importance of bed frames in Sydney CBD, highlighting their role in optimising sleep quality and enhancing the bedroom experience.
1. Space Optimisation:
In Sydney CBD, where real estate comes at a premium, bed frames are essential for maximising space utilisation in compact bedrooms. Choosing a bed frame with built-in storage options, such as drawers or shelves, can help declutter the bedroom and create additional storage space for bedding, clothing, and personal items. Additionally, opting for a platform bed frame with a low profile can visually open up the room, making it feel more spacious and inviting.
2. Style and Aesthetics:
Bed frames serve as the focal point of the bedroom, contributing to its overall style and aesthetics. In Sydney CBD, where modern and contemporary design trends are prevalent, choosing a bed frame that complements the existing decor can elevate the visual appeal of the space. Whether it's a sleek and minimalist platform bed, a luxurious upholstered frame, or a rustic wooden frame, the right bed frame can add personality and character to the bedroom, enhancing its ambiance and creating a welcoming retreat.
3. Support and Durability:
Bed frames provide essential support and stability for mattresses, ensuring a comfortable and restful sleep experience. In Sydney CBD, where high-rise apartment living is common, sturdy bed frames are essential for supporting mattresses and sleepers alike. Opting for a well-constructed bed frame made from durable materials such as hardwood or metal ensures long-lasting support and durability, allowing you to enjoy years of quality sleep without worry.
4. Ventilation and Airflow:
Elevating the mattress off the floor with a bed frame allows for better ventilation and airflow, reducing the risk of moisture buildup and mould growth. In Sydney CBD, where humidity levels can be high, proper airflow is essential for maintaining a healthy sleep environment. Choosing a bed frame with slats or a perforated design promotes airflow through the mattress, helping regulate temperature and humidity levels for a more comfortable and hygienic sleeping experience.
5. Noise Reduction:
Bed frames can help minimise noise and vibrations, providing a quieter and more peaceful sleep environment. In Sydney CBD, where urban living can be noisy and bustling, a sturdy bed frame can help absorb sound and prevent disturbances from neighbouring apartments or street traffic. Opting for a bed frame with solid construction and minimal moving parts reduces the risk of creaking or squeaking, ensuring a restful night's sleep undisturbed by unwanted noise.
Bed frames are essential components of any bedroom in Sydney CBD, offering numerous benefits beyond just supporting mattresses. From space optimisation and style enhancement to support, durability, and hygiene, the right bed frame can significantly impact sleep quality and overall well-being. By choosing a well-constructed and stylish bed frame that meets your needs and preferences, you can create a comfortable and inviting bedroom sanctuary in the heart of Sydney CBD.

Designing Your Dream Space: Top Tips For Choosing Bedroom Suites In Sydney Cbd
Tumblr media
Your bedroom is more than just a place to sleep; it's a personal sanctuary where you can relax, unwind, and recharge. Choosing the right bedroom suite can significantly impact the style and comfort of your space, transforming it into a cozy retreat. For residents of Sydney CBD, finding the perfect bedroom suite is made easier by the range of options available that cater to various styles, preferences, and budgets. Let’s explore how to select the ideal bedroom suite that reflects your personality and fits your space.
Why Invest in a Bedroom Suite?
A bedroom suite typically includes a matching bed frame, nightstands, and sometimes a dresser or wardrobe. These coordinated sets bring a cohesive and polished look to your bedroom, making it easier to achieve a stylish aesthetic. Investing in a complete suite can also save time and effort compared to purchasing individual pieces, as it ensures that all elements of your bedroom furniture complement each other.
In Sydney CBD, where space can be limited, a well-chosen bedroom suite can maximize functionality without sacrificing style. Whether you're looking to create a modern minimalist look, a classic traditional feel, or something uniquely your own, bedroom suites offer the versatility to adapt to any decor.
Top Tips for Choosing the Perfect Bedroom Suite in Sydney CBD
Measure Your Space: Before you start shopping, measure the dimensions of your bedroom to ensure that the furniture will fit comfortably. Consider the placement of doors, windows, and existing fixtures to avoid overcrowding your room. Sydney CBD apartments can vary in size, so it's important to choose a suite that complements your room's layout.
Consider Your Style: Bedroom suites come in a variety of styles, from sleek contemporary designs to elegant traditional sets. Think about the overall aesthetic you want to achieve. If you prefer a modern look, opt for bedroom suites with clean lines, neutral colors, and minimalist features. For a more classic appeal, consider sets with ornate detailing, rich wood finishes, and luxurious upholstery.
Think About Storage Needs: Storage is often a key consideration in Sydney CBD homes, where space can be at a premium. Look for bedroom suites that include functional storage solutions such as built-in drawers, spacious nightstands, or a dresser. Storage beds can also be a great option, offering hidden compartments to keep your bedroom clutter-free.
Choose the Right Material: The material of your bedroom suite will impact both its appearance and durability. Solid wood suites offer timeless beauty and durability, while metal frames can add a contemporary touch. Upholstered headboards can bring a soft, cozy element to your bedroom, enhancing comfort and style.
Prioritize Comfort: While style is important, comfort should never be overlooked. After all, your bedroom is where you rest and recharge. Consider the height and support of the bed frame, and pair it with a quality mattress that suits your sleeping preferences. Test the drawers and doors of nightstands and dressers for smooth functionality to ensure everyday use is hassle-free.
Popular Bedroom Suite Trends in Sydney CBD
Minimalist Designs: With the rise of minimalist living, many homeowners in Sydney CBD are opting for bedroom suites with clean lines, simple shapes, and neutral colors. These designs create a sense of calm and openness, perfect for small spaces.
Luxurious Upholstery: Upholstered bedroom suites featuring plush fabrics like velvet or linen have become increasingly popular. These suites offer a luxurious look and feel, adding warmth and elegance to any bedroom.
Industrial Chic: Combining raw materials such as metal and reclaimed wood, industrial-style bedroom suites bring an edgy, urban vibe to your space. This trend is ideal for those who want a stylish yet unpretentious look.
Eco-Friendly Options: As sustainability becomes a priority, eco-friendly bedroom suites made from responsibly sourced wood and recycled materials are gaining traction. These suites not only look good but also reduce environmental impact.
Where to Find Bedroom Suites in Sydney CBD
Sydney CBD is home to numerous furniture stores that offer a wide selection of bedroom suites to suit every style and budget. From luxury showrooms showcasing designer collections to affordable retailers with budget-friendly options, there’s something for everyone. Many stores also offer customization options, allowing you to choose the fabric, finish, and configuration that best fits your space and taste.
Online shopping is another convenient way to explore a variety of bedroom suites. Many Sydney CBD retailers have comprehensive online catalogs, enabling you to browse, compare, and order from the comfort of your home. Some even offer virtual consultations and design services to help you make the best choice.
Conclusion: Create Your Dream Bedroom with the Perfect Suite in Sydney CBD
Choosing the right bedroom suite is a crucial step in creating a bedroom that is both stylish and functional. By considering factors such as space, style, storage, and comfort, you can find a suite that transforms your bedroom into a personal sanctuary. Whether you prefer modern minimalism, classic elegance, or something in between, Sydney CBD offers a variety of options to help you design your dream space.

Our Favourite Kids’ Rooms
Our Favourite Kids’ Rooms
Roundup
by Lucy Feagins, Editor
Jo Dabrowski and Andrew Fisher’s Californian bungalow in Melbourne’s inner West, includes this incredible room for their son Herbie. Photo – Annette O’Brien.
Jo Dabrowski and Andrew Fisher’s eldest son, Fred’s room Lego head from Target, bed linen from IKEA, and sock monkey and soft toys on bed made by Jo. Photo – Annette O’Brien.
Enlist Bright, Bold Colours
Kids love colour, and there truly is no better room to introduce a bold paint treatment. If you’re lacking confidence, try starting with a small, contained area, such as an internal bedroom door, or just one wall (the wall behind the bed is a great place to start).
If you need further convincing, take your cues from Jo Dabrowski and Andrew Fisher’s vibrant home in Melbourne’s inner West – every room is painted a different hue!
The Seddon home of art teacher Martine Cook, her husband Jason, a podiatrist, and their two children Annie and Barney. Annie’s bedroom with Fictional Objects doona cover, Kip & Co cushion, Pirum Parum Pear poster by Fine Little Day and the bed head is an eBay find. Try Statement Wallpaper
If there’s one thing more anxiety-inducing that choosing a bold paint treatment, it’s installing Wallpaper. Terrifying stuff. Understandably, since wallpaper can be a significant investment, and requires an expert to install. (DON’T even think about DIY wallpaper installation…).
The right wallpaper, though, can completely transform a room. We love Martine Cook’s selections from JC de Castelbajac Paris. In Melbourne, try Radford Furnishings for a brilliant range of imported wallpapers.
The North Melbourne home of Paula and Peter Mills and their three daughters Lia, Rosie, and Liberty. Rosie and Liberty’s shared bedroom with wrapping paper from Wrap Magazine, Yay art print from Sweet William Prints, large poster with dark background from The Souvenir Society, bedspread from Earth Tribe, hand cushion hand made by Paula’s sister Shelley, brightly coloured cushion from Halcyon Nights, and pink velvet cushion from Rachel Castle. Paste-it-up
Teenagers know a thing or two about personalising their spaces. When it comes to posters, tear sheets and mood boards – more is more.  Go floor to ceiling, or go home!
We love the playful poster placement in the North Melbourne home of Paula and Peter Mills and their three daughters Lia, Rosie, and Liberty, featuring torn out pages from magazines, prints, photos and Etsy finds.
Inside the Point Lonsdale home of Kip & Co co-founder Kate Heppell, her partner Mal Heppell (of DMS Landscapes) and their son Zig. Zig’s bedroom brings together an array of Kip & Co pieces: pillows, cushion, bedspread, bedding and blanket, as well as a Minnie Pwerle artwork above the bed and vintage wall hanging purchased from the Mill Market in Geelong. Photo – Eve Wilson, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
The Eltham home of Poppy Lane and Scott Gibson (of Pop & Scott), and their children Frida and Lou. Frida’s sweet bedroom features Pop & Scott single bed and vintage Moroccan rugs. Photo – Annette O’Brien. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Layer Pattern and Texture
Colourful bedlinen is a no-brainer in kids’ spaces. Try  Kip & Co for the brightest, boldest bedding and accessories, and Op Shops or Etsy for Nanna-tastic crochet blankets and old fashioned knitted toys.
Another room from the home of Paula and Peter Mills and their three daughters Lia, Rosie, and Liberty. Pictured is part of Rosie and Liberty’s shared bedroom with bedding from Adairs, handmade soft toy from South Africa, tiger tote bag from Gorman, vintage beds from junk shop in South Africa, banana wrapping paper from Wrap Magazine Shop and Liberty’s own artwork on the wall. Photo – Annette O’Brien. Showcase Self-made Artwork
Kids are creative without inhibition… follow their lead!  We love the unbridled creativity on display in the East Malvern home of Ruth Bruten (aka Gourmet Girlfriend) and her FIVE boys: Jasper, Max, Oscar, Gus, and Archie.
The North Fitzroy home of Kylie Zerbst (owner and creative director of local fashion label Obus) and her partner Simon Murray (a digital director at Doris). Their little boy Orlo’s room includes a  ‘half bed, half play platform’ built by Simon. Eames hanger, top artwork by Sarah Parkes, and the framed Ibex print is from a trip to Turkey. Photo – Annette O’Brien, production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
The Jan Juc home of Arabella Wilson (designing kidswear under her label  Dougal), Chris Wilson (of Yoke Yoga studio) and their two young daughters Marlowe and Lottie. The kids’ bedroom features antique wooden beds from Sydney Antique Centre and artwork from Outré. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Toy Town
The bedroom of any child under 10 is usually home to a small village of soft toys. We love UK designer Donna Wilson‘s sweet knitted critters, rag-doll style softies from Danish brand Maileg, and exquisite custom handmade dolls by Melbourne crafter A Makers Burrow.
The Elwood home of optometrist Jo Twaddell (of WINK Optometry), her husband Toby McIntyre (a physiotherapist) and their three young boys, Fred, George and Angus. The boys’ room has a sliding door that can open up to make one large space. The KNECT4 beds are from Mubu home, drawings by Annabel Warne, lanyards and ice cream money box from ‘Naughts and Crosses’, and the pom pom throw and wood cushions are from The Grumpy Swimmer, while other cushions are from South Village Trading. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files. Photo – Eve Wilson.
The home of Tim Ross, Michelle Glew-Ross and their gorgeous kids Bugsy and Bobby. In Bugsy’s room is a map of the Sydney CBD, found in an op shop. Photo – Eve Wilson. Production – Lucy Feagins / The Design Files.
Keep it Themed
Try for a consistent theme to keep clutter at bay. A passion for all things vintage extends into the kids’ spaces in the home of Tim Ross, Michelle Glew-Ross and their gorgeous kids Bugsy and Bobby in Sydney.
Closer to home, we love the playful, cartoon-like details in the Elwood home of optometrist Jo Twaddell (of WINK Optometry), and her three young sons. The boys’ room has a sliding door that opens up to make one large space, and features an awesome oversized ice cream from Naughts and Crosses, and ‘wood’ cushions from The Grumpy Swimmer. Try Third Drawer Down for similar oversized novelty pieces.
