Jonny and nastya made some sort of pact in the beginning, when it was just the two of them that they would they would stick together, always fight back to back. And now imaging Out and thinking of jonny biting his tounge to stop himself from saying something as childish as “you promised”

Trying to plan a Hadestown AU is hard when you’re aro and don’t really write romance

Yo!! I can give a lil rundown (even though I only binged them last week)

So the basic premise is that the mechanisms is an immortal band of space pirates, that travel around on thier starship- The Aurora- preforming thier songs- based on events that they’ve seen or heard first hand. The albums and performances we see are just the mechanisms preforming on earth before leaving again.

Each mechanism member had a previous life, but then “died” and were brought back by dr Camilla- the founding member of the band. They are each brought back to life with a “mechanism”, a robotic item that replaces a part of thier body (often the part that killed them). This mechanism is what makes them immortal. Dr Camilla no longer travels with the band becuase somebody pushed her out the airlock.

The mechanisms are-

Johnny Deville- Captain first mate, lead vocalist. The one with intense eye makeup. Killed his dad. Mechanism is his heart. His story is in the song “one eyed jacks” from tales to be told 1.

Gunpowder Tim- Master at arms. Sings and plays a gutair. The one with a trench coat and amazing hair. His mechanism is his eyes. His story is in the song “Gunpowder Tim vs the moon kaiser” from tales to be told

Drumbot Brian- Pilot. Uses a lot of instruments. Short version of his story is that he could bring people back from the dead, got sent into space becuase of religious fervour, almost died via exposure, then was saved by dr Camilla. However, becuase he’d been in space for so long the only “alive” part of him left was his heart. His entire body is now robotic- his mechanism- with the last of his original body being his heart. He has a “morality switch” in the back of his neck that switches between MJE- means justify ends- and EJM- ends justify means- the two settings he can operate on, that effects his choices/actions. His story is sung in the song “lost in the cosmos” from tales to be told.

Ashes o’ Reilly- Quatermaster. Electric bass and voice. The one with the red/black eye makeup. Pyromaniac. Their mechanism is thier lungs. Thier story is in the song “lucky sevens” in tales to be told

Baron Marius von Raum, ships doctor. Mechanism is his metal arm. Plays the fiddle, mandolin + sings.

Ivy Alexandria, Archivist. Loves books. Plays the flute, recorder and trumpet. Was raised in a giant library before joining the mechanisms.

The Toy Solider- ??? Present. The one with the impressive moustache and the uniform. Technically not a “mechanism”- literally entirely made of wood, and not alive in the first place. Thier whole story is on the mechanisms website, under fiction, named, rather self explanatory, as “the history of the toy solider”. Also sings about themself in “gunpowder Tim vs the mood kaiser”

Raphaella la cognizi- science officer. Plays the piano and sings. Mechanism is some epic mechanical wings

Nastya Rasputina- engineer- plays the viola. Idk where to begin but basically she’s the reanimated corpse of Anastasia Romanava, the child of Nikolai Romanava, the last Russian Tsar. There’s also something about being within a digital universe? Nastya is in a relationship with her girlfriend, The Aurora. The ship. Her mechanism is metal blood.

Dr Camilla. Described as a sad looking goth. Pushed out the airlock and no longer travels with the mechanisms.

The best place to begin would be to either choose an album- any album- and just start from the beginning. The YouTube channel “Thevoidsings” is very good for this, as they have- in order- all the songs with lyrics. Or, you could find a live performance on YouTube. Great for the energy, but the sound quality isn’t as good and it can be hard to follow the plot when you don’t already know it.

But literally, there’s no order to the albums! Pick any as your first, then cycle through the rest.

Then there’s the “tales to be told” albums, which don’t have an over arching plot, but rather deal with miscellaneous tales, some relating to the main albums, some to the mechanisms themselves, and some completely random. I’d suggest listening to the main four albums, then tales to be told.

Okay I’ll give, What’s a good album to get into the mechanisms? Also maybe just a run down of the members (characters??) would be helpful

Nastya knows how to hand sew. Jonny taught her. she caught him fixing one of his pants and asked for him to teach her. He gives in.

Johnny hates sewing. Hates how much it reminds him of his first home. About how he had to learn to sew his shirts together becuase his father spent all their money gambling the night before and didn’t have the money to buy a new one. About how despite being a seamstress, his mother never took the time to teach him. About how he would have to sew himself up after a job for jack.

But nastya likes it. She takes pride in it. He sits with her as she embroiders and sews. He never does any sewing himself not if he can help it.

After Out he goes to knock on her door to ask her to fix his shirt. He pauses with his hand on the door when he remembers she’s not here anymore. He looks at the shirt in his hands and sees the little stars she had embroidered into it after fixing it. He turns around and goes to find his sewing needles.

I love the idea that jonny makes/gives blankets to nastya. She mentioned how cold she was all the time on one quiet night after a visit with the doctor. The day after she finds a blanket folded on her bed. Jonny never admits to it but she’s knows it’s from him. After every visit with the doctor for she has, without fail, there will be a new blanket folded nearly on her bed. After the first few she starts to notice little embroidered pieces on them. One has the aurora, another a viola, a microphone, a bird. She loves them dearly. She takes turns with which one she uses at night and the rest are folded in a neat pile next to her bed.

After Out, when jonny finally goes back to his room, he sees a folded blanket on the edge of his bed. He just breaks down. This is how the others find him, and how they find out that natasha’s gone. They see him collapsed to the ground clutching a blanket and sobbing. Besides for Ashes and the Toy Soldier, none of the mechs have seen jonny get misty eyed much less sob as he is now. They don’t know what to do. Ashes goes looking for nastya becuase she’s the one that knows jonny best and she’s always the one to help him. When they can’t find nastya anywhere, they realize what must have happened.
