Landsat Plumbs the (Shallow) Depths
As the workhorses for Earth science from space, Landsat satellites have imaged Earthâs land surfaces uninterrupted for over 50 years. The missions continue to execute on the big idea of consistent, long-term observations. But limiting observations to land would have kept Landsat from its full potential.
Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey have developed a new way to measure ocean depth, or bathymetry, in shallow nearshore environments using Landsat data. By applying a sophisticated physics-based algorithm to satellite observations, their method offers an expedient way to map the seafloor from space without relying on prior depth measurements. Deriving bathymetry from satellitesâa process researchers have been refining for decadesâcan fill in many mapping gaps in coastal areas and provide up-to-date information critical for modeling water movement, tracking coastal changes, studying coral reef habitats, and more.
The new method, described in a 2024 paper in the journal Remote Sensing, relies upon visible-light observations by the OLI (Operational Land Imager) and OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) sensors on the Landsat 8 and 9 satellites, coupled with a heavy dose of physics calculations. In shallow enough seas, sunlight penetrates the water and reflects off the seafloor. Scientists can then relate the reflected light as âseenâ by the satellite to water depth.
The calculation is relatively straightforward in clear water with a bright bottom. But it becomes more complex, for example, when light interacts with sediment or plankton in the water column or a grass-covered seafloor. The USGS researchers developed the algorithm to correct for these types of effects on reflected light, as well as those caused by particles in the atmosphere and the reflection of the sky off the water, to determine water depth.
This algorithm was applied to several coastal areas containing coral reefs, including the Florida Keys, shown here. The depth map (right) shows shallow channels cutting between low-lying islands, also called cays or keys. The shallow linear feature running across the bottom of the image is part of Floridaâs stretch of coral reefs, which spans 350 miles (560 kilometers) from end to end. The bathymetric map is shown relative to a natural-color Landsat image of the same area (left).
In clear water, it is possible to map depths greater than 20 meters (65 feet), much deeper than expected, said Minsu Kim, the remote sensing and ocean optics expert who led the methodâs development. Crucially, the method works without external calibration, although it can be refined by incorporating bathymetry measurements from other sources. The tradeoff is that the model accounts for the optical properties of common ocean components, such as phytoplankton and suspended solids in the water column, and grass or sand on the seafloor. If uncommon components such as a bloom of a specific phytoplankton species or a rare kind of dark volcanic sea floor are present, the model becomes less accurate.
Coral reef zones were good candidates for piloting this method because they influence sediment transport, affect coastal erosion, and provide critical habitat to much of the worldâs marine life, said physical geographer Jeff Danielson, co-author of the paper and leader of the USGS Coastal National Elevation Database (CoNED) Applications Project. These environments can also change dramatically over time and would benefit from more frequent re-mapping made possible by satellite-derived bathymetry.
Despite the need for refined shallow-water maps, however, producing them has remained a practical and technical challenge. Bathymetric mapping has traditionally relied upon ship-based sonar and aircraft-based lidarâboth cost- and labor-intensive endeavors.
The quest to outsource this onus to satellites includes a pioneering effort by oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. In the 1975 NASA-Cousteau Bathymetry Experiment, Cousteau and a team of divers aboard the Calypso played leapfrog with the Landsat 1 and 2 satellites around the Bahamas and Florida. They would position themselves directly underneath each dayâs satellite pass, and divers would measure water clarity, light transmission, and bottom reflectivity. Data from the trip showed that in clear waters with a bright seafloor, Landsat could measure depths up to 22 meters (72 feet).
The cross-purposing of remote sensing instruments for bathymetry has continued from there. Subsequent techniques have included using turbidity as imaged by Landsat as a proxy for depth; combining altimetry measurements from NASAâs ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2) with ship-based sonar; deriving depth from stereo imagery; and applying an algorithm to digital photography from the International Space Station.
With the new satellite-based method in hand, Kim, Danielson, and colleagues are looking to scale up nearshore measurements. For example, they want to map waters around Pacific islands and atolls, where data is currently lacking but would be useful for modeling waves, sediment transport, and other processes. Maps are also blank for large portions of coastal Alaska, where hazards including harsh weather, seasonal sea ice, and strong currents have made conventional mapping work difficult.
In the United States alone, coastal waters are currently only 52 percent mapped, Danielson noted. Initiatives such as the National Ocean Mapping, Exploration, and Characterization (NOMEC) and the global Seabed 2030 project are working to increase mapping coverage, alongside the USGSâs CoNED pursuit to assimilate data that now includes Landsat-derived water depth. âItâs one of the hot topics in geospatial sciences right now,â said Danielson. âThere is a niche to fill in bathymetry gaps with a new tier of data.â

Brian Eno
Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno
Almost no one uses the full name of this outstanding musician. Many people donât even know that the currently popular musical direction âAmbientâ was presented to the World by this very person. Although he started out as a typical British rocker, which, however, very soon he got tired of.
Today is May 15th â Brian Enoâs birthday â he turned 76 years old. He is almost the same age as Jean Michel Jarre, and took up experimental electronic music in the same era as him â at the turn of the 60s and 70s. Brian Enoâs first musical refuge was the group Roxy Music, in which he was responsible for keyboard parts and special effects, but his vision was not fully combined with the trend of the groupâs development, and after the second RM album, Brian Eno went out and began a solo career.
The first two solo albums were to some extent still in tune with Roxy Music â also songs, also Rock, albeit strange. But starting with 1975âs âAnother Green Worldâ Eno began to delve into experimentation to its fullest depth. In fact, back in 1975, he recorded the experimental psychedelic album âEvening Starâ with Robert Fripp (âKing Crimsonâ), which has already become the defining vector of almost all of his subsequent work. Further, he only confirmed his commitment to experimental and ambient electronica. And the song inclusions were relegated to the level of collaboration with other musicians, whom Eno produced in large numbers. Among his wards at various times were U2, Talking Heads and David Byrne, David Bowie, Robert Fripp, Elvis Costello, John Cale, Nico, Paul Simon, «ĐĐČŃĐșĐž ĐŃ», Genesis, Cluster, Slowdive, Coldplay, Natalie Imbruglia and many others â the list can be very long. As is the incredibly extensive discography of Brian Eno himself.
Itâs safe to say that the number of full-length albums that he has released under his own name, or had a significant hand in as a key writer/co-writer, if not already in the one hundred, is rapidly approaching that.
Brian Enoâs musical style was adopted by many prominent representatives of the electronic scene. Among them is Jean Michel Jarre, who in 1990 actually recorded a remake of Brian Enoâs 1985 album Thursday Afternoon â we know this work as âWaiting for Cousteauâ, although not everyone knows that the original idea for such music belonged to Eno.
Eno was the first to come up with the concept of self-developing music, which could be released as a web application, and when launched, independently generated new melodic and environmental elements each time, but strictly in the style specified by the author. Later, this concept was largely repeated by Jean Michel Jarre, who released the EON web application.
Brian Eno is distinguished by his amazing creative tirelessness, and still regularly releases new albums, several releases a year, but at the same time there is absolutely no feeling that the author has gone into self-citation.
Brian Eno on Youtube Music:Â https://music.youtube.com/channel/UCoWPCwCsQmBwoXBCL_laaIw
One of Brian Enoâs key, and one might say classic, albums is Apollo, a soundtrack commissioned by NASA to score a film about the manned mission to the Moon. If you ask yourself what exactly Eno himself meant by the term âAmbientâ (this concept has mutated greatly over the decades), then the Apollo album is the best answer to such a question.

Vinegar Syndrome / Distribpix Press Release:Â A Home Video Merger of Epic Proportion
Bridgeport, Connecticut - Vinegar Syndrome is excited to announce an exclusive distribution partnership with legendary NYC-based exploitation and sexploitation producer and distributor, Distribpix Inc.
This partnership will bring Distribpixâs extensive catalog of close to 300 feature films to Home Video, including countless never on disc titles as well as classic exploitation films from genre masters such as Michael and Roberta Findlay, the Amero Brothers, Joe Sarno, Chuck Vincent, Radley Metzger, Ron Sullivan, and Shaun Costello, among dozens more. Additionally, Distribpixâs unprecedented archive of key 1960s and early 70s exploitation rarities, many of which have been completely unavailable since the VHS and early DVD era, will at last be making their return to disc, all newly restored and presented in the type of deluxe, collector-centric editions that both Distribpix and Vinegar Syndrome are known for creating.
Vinegar Syndrome co-founder Joe Rubin, in describing the collaboration said, âVinegar Syndrome and Distribpix have worked together before Vinegar Syndrome existed. This venture has been a long time coming and I couldnât be more excited to be working on preserving, restoring and releasing this collection. So many of the best and most significant sexploitation and early hardcore features were produced by Distribpix and it is an honor to finally be able to consider them part of the Vinegar Syndrome family.â
Head of Distribpix Inc, Steven Morowitz responded âThe gang at Vinegar Syndrome is wonderful; they opened their doors and welcomed me into their family. I am honored and grateful for this opportunity and together we are going to produce some absolutely amazing packages. Vinegar Syndrome is the best at what they do, from the highest quality restorations, to top-notch physical releases, so this really is a perfect match and the best spot for Distribpix. Our companies not only thrive on excellent restorations and releasing, but there is a major emphasis on film preservation and archiving, which was equally attractive to me.â
While schedule specifics are still being worked out, Radley Metzger and Gerard Kikoineâs, The Tale of Tiffany Lust (1981), starring Veronica Hart, Vanessa Del Rio, Desiree Cousteau, Samantha Fox, George Payne, and Dominique St Clair, will be making its world 4K UHD and Blu-Ray debut late this summer, while Michael Findlayâs notorious Flesh Trilogy is being prepared for a Blu-Ray release this fall, in partnership with Something Weird Video. Additionally, the Command Cinema line which has been distributed by Distribpix for the last several years will also be joining the Distribpix/Vinegar Syndrome family and will see both Blu-Ray and 4K debuts of producer/director, Cecil Howardâs acclaimed erotica.
This monumental merger coincides with the launch of MĂ©lusine, a new online marketplace for premium home video editions of sexploitation and hardcore cinema primarily produced during both genresâ golden ages: the early 1960s through the late 1980s. In addition to serving as the new retail home for Command Cinema, several other brandings will be launched:
MĂ©lusine, which will serve as the flagship brand, will offer deluxe 4K UHD/Blu-ray combo pack editions of some of the landmark works in hardcore theatrical features, with an emphasis on works by the genreâs most acclaimed filmmakers.
Quality X, the name of which pays homage to what was one of the most esteemed early home video distributors of erotic entertainment, will offer single film Blu-ray editions of standout and hidden gem theatrical hardcore features from around the globe.
Distribpix itself will become home to all things sexploitation, pulling from both Vinegar Syndrome and Distribpixâs vast libraries and ranging from the earliest nudie cuties all the way through the tail end of theatrical softcore. Releases will be single, double and triple feature Blu-rays. Â
Finally, Vinegar Syndromeâs acclaimed hardcore feature branding, Peekarama, will continue to offer double feature Blu-rays of hardcore films in all genres.
In keeping with Vinegar Syndrome and Distribpixâs focus on film preservation, releases under all branding will meet the highest standards in presentation quality and the most comprehensive available extras.
The union between the two companies will produce the widest and most diverse catalog of exploitation, sexploitation and classic hardcore features, available on disc anywhere in the world.

Perfect Water is such a Michael song actually. so have my crazed analysis
"Is this our destiny? To join our hands at sea and slowly sink, and slowly think: This is perfect water, passing over me"
yes it was their destiny to become a family and slowly, over time, get to know eachother better and love and apprechiate the way they do things too. So then he starts to feel he doesn't have to only stick to his 'everything done perfectly perfect workaholic style' attetude he had when he was alone.
"Do you know Jacques Cousteau? Well it said on the radio that he hears bells in random order, deep beneath the perfect water. Lord that is frightning, but still so inviding"
he has begun to sink under that stictness of his because of what difference Joey and Nichole bring to his life, the randomness, the laughs, the colour! Compared to what he had before them, he is starting to let himself enjoy his life a little more, even when it's not perfect to his standards, even though it scares him a little to let go of his habbits he thought he was happy with.
"To drown inside a sound, to lay so far underground and to think: This is perfect water, passing over me"
Michael wants to be a part of that family fluffiness, those moments of pure love he never even thought he's have, and to embrase the scary imperfections because they have become secondary. Now, everything he does with them is perfect. Though he never thought that he'd think that.
"To flow inside the spiral tide, to drop my eyes like a blind and ride across the curl unmarked by orders"
it's like he has accepted that he wants this family now, he knows he can't go back to living without them. How could he, at this point he is so invested in them it would be impossible to just brush them off like nothing. He loves, after all.
"A life of perfect order. A strange and perfect water"
Do you see it?? The end, the strange is so powerful. he succumbs to the strange but perfect new life he got thrust into. Nichole and Joey are the strangest of all, but he's happy. Because a perfect life and a strange order can both excist at the same time.
#not touching on the two blocks of ice or the crazes birds that raid the trees at the start because i don't have enough to say#but just know i am going crazy over this song#i hope i got out even half of what i meant to say#my two dads#perfect water by blue oyster cult#i hope this is legible#these are not all the lyrics btw i guess you could've guessed#the blind might also be a bride but who knows it doesn't change what i think#(i know the boc songs have a story and all that but i am enjoying projecting my blorbo's on them very much)

Postcards from Snagglepuss
So we're into a cheese-and-crackers session at Crazy Claws' retreat at Wisconsin Dells when my phone goes off and--
PETER POTAMUS, rather excitable: Soooo, how exactly is Snagglepuss this evening? MOI: Heavens to Jacques Cousteau ... PETER POTAMUS, chuckling at that last bit: Admittedly, things up your way are getting a little bit on the autumnal side of things ... enough to start thinking about the winter dive session in planning over in the Caribbean with my Magic Divers! MOI: No mistaking as much, Peter! What else could be on this sophisto's mind, anyway? [Short pause] Besides, what art thou and thine up to? PETER POTAMUS: You mighr be interested in knowing where So-So and I are just preparing for another of those interesting sessions in the uncharted parts of the Polynesian, where nakedness can't help but feel rather natural and comfortable! MOI: Especially underwater, I assume. PETER POTAMUS: I assume you've read my books in past about such fascinating exploits, to begin with! MOI: Affirmative. And I assume this includes such fascinating exploits among the dolphins in such waters! PETER POTAMUS: Especially when they can't help but feel oh so lovesick! Dolphins can't help but deploy their charm offensive in sensual mode to attract trust and friendship, and do those natives know how to play along! MOI: So I've heard ... and besides, all of our company are here to say "hello" and wish you all the best in your latest experiences, even as we're having cheese and crackers as evening becomes a little more obvious! PETER POTAMUS: And from what THIS hippo most dive-happy has been hearing, I understand the Hair Bear Bunch has this habit following their orgies during the bear mating season of diving into the lake where they have bivouac with their mating partners around sunrise! HAIR BEAR, as is sitting next to Snagglepuss this go-round: That, Peter, happens to be rather correct ... and think of such sunrise dives as a sort of cleansing and purification ritual and exercise, not to mention reinforcing such wonderful relationships for the evening previous. PETER POTAMUS: So that explains things, Hair Bear! HAIR BEAR: Uh, how else could you picture things the morning after the night before, as it were? PETER POTAMUS: [Laughing uproariously to the point where such essentially turns out ending the call]
And who, pray tell, could resist wanting to join Peter Potamus in the diving experience when all is said and done? Such being a question put to our group, and pretty much everyone couldn't. Including no less than Touché Turtle, I have to add.

Hawkins x Ikkaku Headcanons
đ„ Though in hindsight Hawkins was definitely someone Ikkaku should have avoided, he did manage to appeal to her in the beginning. He was, undoubtedly, one of the more traditionally romantic men who had ever shown interest in her. Sheâd get surprise bouquets of black lilies delivered to her, he knew to complement her on her mind as well as her beauty, and she did like that he didnât seem to mind if she made the occasional odd comment related to her upbringing on Joras.
đ„ However, it was his interest in Joras that really made her pause and second-guess whether this was a guy she wanted to continue having a fling with. After all, people who asked a lot of questions about the Old Ones usually werenât right in the head. Especially when she noticed he had a copy of the Necronomicon.
đ„ That being said, before she realized Hawkinsâ desire for her was more than just physical or even romantic, Ikkaku did sleep with him a few times. The sex was, admittedly, pretty good, and she got to experience some tantric sexual techniques while he got to learn some of her kinks.
đ„ Ikkaku basically decided they were over and done with about the time the crews reached Sabaody, and was very glad she didnât have to see him during the timeskip.
đ„ She did not know about the High Priestess card heâd made in her likeness until Wano, otherwise she would have dropped him sooner.
(CW for headcanons below the cut: capture, sexual assault, victim blaming, trauma)
đ„ Ikkaku was captured on Wano not long before Shachi, Penguin, and Bepo were when she was attempting to gather some intel in the Flower Capital. Her capture was similar to Lawâs in that Hawkins subdued her by threatening harm to two other Hearts (Crozier and Cousteau) with his powers. Hawkins did not advertise her capture to Law like he had with the boys, as he did not wish for any interference in his plans for her and wanted to keep her as a trump card if necessary. It was Drake who spilled the beans when Law got free of his seastone chains, as he too had become disturbed by Hawkins' obsessive behavior.
đ„ Ikkaku was not kept in the dungeon, but Hawkins' private quarters. This was when she finally saw the High Priestess card and realized just how cracked he was. He forced her to wear a robe similar to what her doppleganger on the card wore, then gave her a reading about her past and present. Ikkaku mocked him for it but was secretly very disturbed at just how accurate it was, especially when he talked about her past and mentioned things he should not know; particularly her dead twinâs name.
đ„ Ikkaku and Hawkinsâ sexual history came back to bite her during her time as his prisoner, as when he forced himself on her, he reminded her that sheâd once welcomed his touch. As he fucked her, he made a point of whispering in her ear that she was asking for it, that he knew what she liked, and that he knew deep down she wanted this. Ikkaku was felt she had no choice but to take it as any attempt at hurting him would be transferred to Law.
đ„ After Law escaped his own captivity, defeated Hawkins, and was informed by Drake of Ikkakuâs whereabouts, he did come to rescue her. He had a pretty good idea of what she went through just by looking at her but Ikkaku begged him to focus on escaping rather than going after Hawkins, mostly because she was afraid of Law getting hurt or captured again.
đ„ After Wano, Ikkaku developed a visceral dislike for the feeling of straw against her skin. If asked, sheâll say itâs from too long sleeping on the tatami mats, but really, itâs because the sensation reminds Ikkaku far too much of Hawkinsâ powers. For the rest of her time on Wano, Ikkaku couldn't sleep on the tatami mats unless all of her skin was covered.
đ„ She has a hard time fully believing that Hawkins is actually dead and sometimes wishes she could find his body and burn it just to have some kind of proof for herself that he won't appear out of the shadows and steal her away again.
