If you know anything about the development details of Sonic Riders, you know that its prototype was supposed to be more of a Tony Hawk like game instead of a standard racing game. That may be disappointing to hear considering this sounds like a pretty rad idea. Well I have good news. Sonic Frontiers is pretty much a Tony Hawk game. I’ve heard a lot of comparisons to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and other open world/zone games and while those parallels are somewhat valid, they don't really get to the heart of what this game is. Sonic Frontiers is simply a game where you go around and perform sick tricks to get collectibles, and it's always fun because you just happen to be doing it as Sonic the Hedgehog.

Once you got really good at them, the beauty of the old Tony Hawk Pro Skater games was seeing how many task you could complete in a run. It was usually feasible to get 1 or 2 task out of the way within the 2 minute limit, but when you could knock out half of the objectives, you felt like a well oiled board sliding machine. Sonic Frontiers replicates the soul of this. It doesn't have a time limit, but it does have a ton of task to complete. Task which flow into each other seamlessly within it's giant skate parks masquerading as overworlds. It might seem weird for these environments to have grind rails and ramps plastered over the landscape, but it's only weird if you view this as a real place and not the skate park editor level that it is. I mean that more literally than you might think, as you actively build rails and springs as you progress through the island and these act as a sort of fast travel. It taps into the integral joy of seeing how fast you can get from point A to point B and how cool you can look while doing it.

None of the activities you do in Sonic Frontiers are all that interesting individually. Killing enemies is fun, but it's not the peak of stylish action by any means. Grabbing memory tokens are usually enjoyable obstacles, but they lack meaningful challenge usually. The puzzles are baby tier and don't take much thought. Cyber Space Stages are a good change of pace, but lack personality. None of these are anything special and I do wish there was more variety in each category, but doing so many of them, so fast makes it feel like you are getting a lot of shit done. The game can easily flow from puzzle to token to token to mini boss to stage within a few moments if you know what you're doing. And if you don't, then it takes longer, but it's still pretty quick. Sonic Frontiers is bursting with activities that feel like chores, but gives you the speed and tools to knock out those task in moments. It's what it feels like to truly speed run the mundanity of life. I don't know if I'm making this sound appealing by comparing it to doing chores, but I assure you I enjoyed pretty much the entire game. Even the rough parts.

And there are a lot of rough parts. Rough Parts such as: The animations being bare bones; The cutscene budget likely not existing; The physics not quite making sense; The UI feeling like a place holder that accidentally got fully produced; The Hellish pop-in diminishing the routes you can plan for on the fly; The dearth of new enemies pretty early in the game; The combat not knowing the meaning of the word ‘balanced’; Experience capping mid way through the game; The offensive amount of unskippable prompts and repeating cutscenes; The entire 3rd Island thinking it’s Sonic Colors; The 5th Island pretending it isn’t the other half of the 1st Island; Big the Cat trivializing the entire gameloop; The exiguous amount of Cyber Space level motifs; The final boss being hidden and optional; The resurrection of Pin-ball, the most egregious sin of them all. This game is not finished cooking and makes some pretty weird decisions.

I could probably keep going. But the point is, none of this shit matters too much because I get to be Sonic going fast on a big map. And that's all anyone really wants. Since Sonic Adventure, people have tricked themselves into thinking hub worlds were good because they gave you a little playground to run in. Heck, that's basically why Sonic Jam is still cooler than every other Sonic Game Compilation. Sonic is about freedom, and giving a nonlinear open level is about as free as it gets. Sure, physics are wonky, but they are fun to tame and use to your advantage. Upgrading speed takes forever, upgrading ring capacity is stupid, and collectibles could have more meat to them, but simply having a goal that requires Sonic to use his unique mechanics is enough. Cyber Space levels are soulless and I don't remember any of them. But getting an S rank on a few was exhilarating and they actually allow you to skip sections and platform yourself. Combat lacks depth and challenge. But it's still fun to make quick work out of enemies once you learn their behavior. There are flaws that stunt its potential, but never invalidate its value. Frontiers is fundamentally good. What I got out of playing it is about equal to what I got out of Mario Odyssey, but in a 1/3rd of the time. The game is at worst, fine. But it does plenty to elevate itself above that.

Sure going fast and homing attacking stuff is fun, but there are little flourishes that give it that extra oomfp. They did not need to include the Drop Dash in this game, but they did and I love it. Instead of being a way to maintain momentum, it sort of acts as a Spin Dash replacement. It’s not really much better than the boost overall when on a flat surface, but if you are on a hill you can really rack up speed. Using the Drop Dash in optimal locales feels like you are playing the opening cutscene of Sonic CD at times. And I did not expect the game to achieve this in any capacity. There's also the trick system which acts as sort of a small reward for taking big jumps and using certain springs and ramps. Because it's not something you can do whenever you want, it feels nice to just hit as many tricks as possible while it last and gain as much XP as you can. The game is perfectly fine without it, but the occasional bell and whistle to movement is appreciated and makes every bit of over world exploration more enjoyable.

I want to separate the Cyloop from the other new mechanics because I think it's more than just a bell or whistle. It's surprisingly integral to how this game works. It has its uses in combat as sort of a guard break, launcher, and heal. But its main importance comes in the islands themselves. The Cyloop is an alternate interact button. There are so many boring things you could theoretically do with the actual interact button. Blow out torches? just press X. Activate this switch? Just press X. Reset this puzzle piece? Just press X. Frontiers could have done all of these things, but uses its actual interact button as little as possible. Most miscellaneous actions that aren't talking, are performed by cylooping. And it sounds kinda brain dead, but quickly running in a circle is far more interesting then just pressing a context sensitive button. It creates its own intuitive design dialect that applies to many situations. And while all this dialect amounts to is: ‘If all else fails, Cyloop’, That's a much more interesting action than ‘press X when prompted’. It's a very sonicy way to go about making a generic action. Because you aren't required to stop moving in order to do it. Running around in a circle is simple fun that doesn't really get boring. Nights into Dream knew exactly what was up 25 years ago and I'm glad Sonic Team returned to the concept.

I liked combat far more than I thought I would. Enemies in the beginning could take a bit to defeat and really slowed down the flow of the game. The special attacks make quick work out of some, but those have some pretty lengthy animations. Luckily they provided the one thing flashy, substance light combat needs to be good: Animation cancels. Because you can cancel all but 2 animations, you are: A) not forced to wait at all during combat and not have to deal with ending lag, and B) a walking combo video. Outside of the horrid mini bosses you are forced to deal with or the actually good mini bosses you are forced to deal with, enemies are practically soft combo labs. Whenever you see a standard enemy and have the thought "oh lemme see if I can get 3 hits off, do a saw blade, cancel out and finish with a loop kick" you have full reign to execute on that or just run past them. Like I said, the mini bosses are hit and miss and mostly act as platforming challenges rather than combat exercises. The true test of your combat abilities come in the boss fights. Not that they are harder or anything. They are the same as a regular enemy once you get up close. They are all trivialized by the parry, and specials melt the health bar. But you look and feel cooler than ever before doing what you normally do to basic enemies to these walking angelic nightmares. These fights have all the spectacle and hype you’d expect from a Sonic Final Boss, but it's for every boss. They are the least polarizing thing in the game. Most people love them as far as I can tell and have the least amount of caveats attached to them

These bosses act as the perfect punctuation to the individual stories of each island. The story by the way, is adequate this time around. I say adequate as a positive, as the last decade of Sonic stories have been gutter trash. I don't think Sonic Frontiers has a better story than say Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic and the Black Knight just due to how passive and routine it ends up being. It also does help that the plot is a reskin of Shadow of the Collossus. So it's still good, but kind of played at this point. What really drives it though, are the character interactions courtesy of the king himself, Ian Flynn.

This is where I have to release my Sonic fan limiters and go off a bit. When I picked up that issue of Archie Sonic in the middle of 3rd Eye Comics when I was 11 years old and saw how fucking rad those stories were, I never would have dreamed that the same guy working on them would be a writer on a Sonic game. Sure, he's only really in charge of dialogue, but this is only the first step. Ian Flynn cannot be stopped and will soon hold all the stones. He has proven himself many times over in the past 16 years and even more so in this game. The characters finally act like themselves. Sonic only cracks jokes when appropriate and they are actually funny when he does. He's cool for the first time in 13 years. A character built to be cool is finally cool. That's so cathartic, and honestly that's the easiest thing this game achieves writing wise. Amy is not annoying and veers into positive female role model territory; Knuckles is not a joke and his life situation is treated with respect; Tails' decade long character assassination is addressed and is rolled back in a fitting way; Eggman is no longer a cartoon, but a true villain with actual depth and is effortlessly humorous. They all have their own character arcs that, and while are bit undercooked due to the game being undercooked, are delivered in a believable way. It makes me excited to see what's in store for them. I'm excited for the future of Sonic stories in general.

That's where the comics come in. We already know people love Tangle; We already know people love Whisper; We already know people love Surge. The data is there and has been since 2018. Testing is complete. They just need to be put in a game. This is such easy money that I don’t even think Sega will mess it up.

Wouldn’t I be fine with it, because, as well, maybe I could afford the DLC this month, but, if my brother can’t...why would I want to send him a clip or something he can’t enjoy, as much, too?

(This led me to another thought / example...Shadow of the collossus...one of my favorite games with FEEL to it...but...if they added monsters and different story scenarios...on and on, forever...I’d probably never touch any of it past the main story because...how and WHY it ends is really one of the most beautiful things about it...same with metal gear solid 3, and other games I could probably think of…

but, the truth is...adding more of that “in between” isn’t gonna help an already great game be better, or even good forever…

and, MAYBE they could keep coming up with meaningful ways to show new / different stories in / through that same original world / game / vessel…

like, I’m sure someone could turn out fantastic dead pan comedy arc using the shadow of the colossus’ game engine, but… just make a new tv show!

...why are they trying to turn each new game (or new tv series), INTO the NEW television set?? as if THIS will be the new vessel through which all stories can / SHOULD flow...)

So...I really don’t know how to help “games” as an industry, with doing the impossible (being both worthwhile, finite AND infinite money machines)…

Because the game I’m currently expecting to play forever...probably won’t get any more money out of me any time soon...

But I’m curious about thinking about it…

Those games you’ll always jump back on board with…

You might not tell EVERYONE to get on that horse with you…

But you’ll ALWAYS put a quarter into the Galaga machine when you’re waiting for your slice of pizza…

...and maybe you’re gonna get the new Red Dead game just to enjoy more horse with your nature...

THOSE forever slices of something...be it a whole, or little bit of who knows what or why, that becomes your “forever game”…

Maybe it’s all feel…

...but is it? I don’t know...but, whatever it is, it’s perfect…

French Press to Pour Over: How to Make Great Coffee at Home

Delicate filter coffees and bold espressos aren’t solely found in coffee shops. Brewing coffee can be done from the comfort of your own home, too. It’s an enjoyable pastime that has delicious results. Plus, you get to learn something new every day.

We’ve put together a guide on how to brew the perfect cup of coffee at home, whether you’re new to specialty coffee or a seasoned pro. Read on to find out how to make coffee at home and discover some top tips to get the best results.

If You’re New to Home Brewing

Whether you’re taking your first steps into making coffee at home, or have a fair share of coffee knowledge, there’s always something to learn.

Brewing Your Coffee

First, what are you using to brew your coffee? There are a few different methods you can choose which are easy to use, and will produce a good cup of coffee.

The  French press, also named the cafetière, is a classic brewing method option. It’s an immersion method which is a great first step into making good coffee at home. The French press provides a bold flavour with a heavy body, so coffees with a medium to dark roast, with chocolate or nutty flavour notes, would work well. The coffee needs to be ground coarsely for brewing with French press, similar to the size of rock salt.

A good start for a brew ratio is 35 g/1.2 oz of coffee to 475 ml/16.7 fl oz of water. This should make two cups of coffee. You can also alter this recipe depending on your taste. If the coffee is strong, you can try using less coffee, or more water. Or, if the coffee tastes too weak, you could increase the coffee dose, or reduce the amount of water. If you notice a sourness in your cup, try grinding a little finer. If it tastes bitter, you can try grinding a little coarser. 

Fill up your French press with some boiling water, this will heat up your French press which will help keep the coffee warm while it brews. Pour this water out and place the French press on the scales. Tip in your coffee grounds. Next, pour freshly boiled water onto the grounds, place the lid on the French press and put a timer on for four minutes. Once the timer is up, lift the lid and stir the grounds using a wooden spoon, a metal spoon can crack the glass and interfere with the taste. Slowly push the plunger down and either serve into cups or pour into a decanter and enjoy.

If you’re looking to taste more nuanced flavours in your coffee with a medium body, the AeroPress is a good next step. Opt for a coffee which has more complex flavour notes so you can taste them in the cup (maybe citrus-like or with fruitier notes). The coffee needs to be ground quite fine, between espresso grind and French press grind, similar to caster sugar. 

There are different ways to brew with the AeroPress. The standard method goes as follows: first, place the small circular filter in the plastic cap and use some hot water to wet the filter and cap. Assemble your AeroPress, screwing the filter into the chamber, and place the chamber on the scales. Tip the grounds inside the chamber, then pour on the boiling water. Quickly stir the coffee, then allow the coffee to steep for 90 seconds. Place the AeroPress on top of your cup or decanter, attach the plunger on top of the chamber and slowly press down, you will experience a bit of resistance, but keep pushing down. The freshly brewed coffee will drip down and produce your delicious brew.

Top Tips For Choosing Coffee

It’s time to delve into the world of coffee. There are so many different coffees to choose from, but don’t let this be daunting, instead see it as an exciting journey.

Always check the roast date on the bag. Fresh coffee will make a lot of difference while brewing at home. As coffee is a food, it reacts with oxygen and becomes stale and loses its flavours over time. If you’re brewing a French press or AeroPress, look for a very fresh roast date, you can use it within a few days, and it will be at its best within that month.

It’s a good idea to try buying whole bean coffee. When coffee is ground, its surface area increases, giving oxygen more space to react with the coffee, meaning it becomes old much quicker. Therefore, pre-ground coffee will lose its freshness much faster than whole bean. Investing in a grinder means fresher coffee and more enhanced flavours. Manual grinders will allow you to get a better-quality coffee, for cheaper, but it will require more effort to use than electric grinders. So, think carefully about what’s important to you and your brewing routine.

If Your Favourite Coffee Is a Pour Over

This method using filters allows for a slow, drip brew. Gravity-driven drip coffees can accentuate the complex flavours in coffee, which is a popular method among baristas.

There are a few different options if you want to try a pour over. There is the Hario V60, the compact cone shape filter, which is defined by its V shape and 60-degree angle. The Chemex, which is a beautiful glass brewer and decanter all in one. Then there is the Kalita Wave, renowned by its ridges on the inside of the brewer.

The V60 requires a thin cone-shaped filter with one hole, and is perfect for expressing delicate fruity and floral flavours. It may take some time to learn how to use it with different coffees but it is great for experimenting. The Chemex requires larger and thicker filter papers and a coarser grind, the flavour is therefore slightly heavier than the V60. It can be slightly tricky to get consistency, but when brewed well, can have a very clean flavour. The Kalita Wave has a flat bottom with three holes for the drip-brew, and ridged edges in the brewer, this all helps with the brew’s consistency, making it a relatively easy pour over method.

Which coffee should you use for a pour over? Any coffee you like, but as a method that is perfect for highlighting flavours from origin and is a great opportunity to explore different lightly roasted micro lots with bright and acidic flavours. Light roast coffee is able to better retain the flavours from the coffee, without being masked by the taste of roasting.

Coffee brewed for pour over can be used within a few days of roasting. Lyndon M. Realubit, owner of Crescendo Coffee Roasters who is based in the Philippines, suggests that “in my experience, five days after the roast date is okay for filter, but this peaks after 14 days”. This is down to preference, so have a go yourself trying different dates after roasts.

For V60, grind your beans to between medium and coarse, or to the consistency of granulated sugar. For the Chemex and Kalita Wave, grind it a little coarser, in between granulated sugar and rock salt. Lyndon also suggests buying a “decent powered burr grinder”, which will ensure a consistent grind throughout. Consistency in the grind stops rogue large or small granules of coffee, which interfere with the brew by creating an uneven extraction nad can leave the coffee tasting unpleasant.

A starting point for the brew ratio is 1:17, 1g of coffee for 17g of water. This can be changed according to the coffee and to taste preferences. If you find your coffee is tasting acidic or sour, try making the grind a little finer. If it tastes slightly bitter, try making the grind size a little more coarse.

To brew your coffee, first, take your filter paper, fold and place in your pour over brewer. Use a small amount of water to wet the sides of the paper. If you’re using a Chemex, place it on the scales, if you’re using a V60 or Kalita Wave, place it on a cup or decanter on the scales. Pour in your desired amount of coffee into the filter paper, and set your scales to zero. 

Let the boiling water rest for a minute before using it to brew. If you have a gooseneck kettle, use this to help control the water speed and force. Pour in double the coffee dose, so 30g of water if you’re using 15g of coffee, on the coffee to let it bloom, you’ll see the coffee slightly bubbling. After this, you can use either pulse pouring, where you add water at different points, or continuous pouring while making a pour over. Each will have a different effect on extraction. Avoid solely pouring directly into the middle, instead, doing an outwards spiral.

Decant your coffee, sip, and enjoy the wonderful flavours.

If Your Favourite Coffee Is Espresso

Brewing espresso at home can be difficult. However, there are a few tips to optimise your home espresso.

Pick your coffees wisely. Although you’ll find light and dark roasts that make a great espresso, a medium roast can be a safe option. Sometimes a light roast is too acidic and a dark roast can taste bitter. Alternatively, look for coffee which is specially roasted for espresso.

Coffee needs to degas after roasting, and due to the high levels of pressure used in brewing an espresso, you need to wait for the coffee to degas before you use it. Most suggest at least a week, Lyndon suggests even “at least 10 days after roasting date” and sometimes more.

Andrés Guevara Chaves, co-founder of El Purica Speciality Coffee Roasters in Germany, highlights the importance of grinding for espresso and suggests that “a good grinder is more important than a machine”. This is because espresso requires a fine grind. The consistency in this fine grind is crucial to a good extraction, as the water flow will be highly impacted if the grind is not consistent. 

Bear in mind that every coffee needs a different grind; you can’t simply follow one rule for each one. While there is no rule set in stone, a good extraction time to aim for is between 25‒30 seconds. You should also ensure that your shot roughly follows the brew ratio of 1:2, with a brewed coffee weight around double of the dry dose, for example, 18g of dry coffee brewing around 36g of brewed coffee.

It’s all about taste. You will need to try the espresso, and from there adjust the recipe accordingly. Andrés explains, “If your coffee is tasting sour (or acidic), grind finer and increase the extraction. If your coffee is tasting bitter, grind coarser and decrease the extraction.”

Now, you can drink your espresso on its own, top with water or maybe add milk. Home espresso machines may not be as powerful as commercial machines, but there are a few ways to improve your milk.

Clean your steam wand by wiping it down and purging anything that is inside. Pour your milk into your jug and position the steam wand at a 20‒30-degree angle. Position your jug so that only the tip of the steam wand is touching the milk. Start steaming your milk, allowing the milk to aerate as the wand sits at the top. When the milk reaches 37°C/99°F (approximately body temperature), slightly lift the jug by around 1cm and allow the milk to texturise and create a vortex.

The milk shouldn’t exceed 65–70°C/150–160°F, you can judge this when the jug is slightly too hot to touch. Give the jug a swirl and remove any large bubbles, then pour onto your espresso. Maybe give some latte art a try?

Top Tips for Brewing at Home

There are always ways to help improve brewing coffee. Here are some top tips for making coffee at home.

Buy High-Quality Coffee

Michael Boyd, R&D Manager for coffee at Heartland FPG in Indiana, suggests that there are “Seven Steps To Perfectly Brewed Coffee”, number one being “Coffee, start with good quality”. At the end of the day, it’s coffee that you’re making so good-quality coffee is one of the best places to start. 

It’s worth researching coffees which work well with your chosen brew method. Andrés also suggests “trying varieties, origins and processing methods” to discover which coffee you like and to learn to brew at home.

Check The Roast Date

Coffee, like all foods, will lose its freshness and flavour over time. Therefore, if your coffee is fresh, you can expect to get better results.

Lyndon tells me that coffee will peak after roasting, and suggests, depending on brew method, to opt for “freshly roasted coffee from one week to one month from the date of roasting”. Investigate this yourself, and work out when after roasting that you enjoy the coffee most.

Michael similarly tells me using “always fresh coffee” and adds “store it in an airtight container in a cool dry place”. While coffee is at its best, it will retain its flavours in places with low moisture content, and out of the sun. This will help retain the freshness for a good cup of coffee.

Invest in a Grinder

Angelo Pacana, Head of Coffee Quality Control at Habitual Coffee in the Philippines, emphasises that “you don’t need to buy fancy brewers that cost a lot. But if you do have the budget, invest on a grinder and start there.” 

It is an easy step to take and can make a huge difference in the quality of the coffee. Pre-ground coffee will lose its freshness quickly, resulting in a lack of flavour and stale taste. 

Always be aware of which grind size you should be aiming for, depending on which brew method you are using. Coffee can end up under-extracted or over-extracted if the grind size is incorrect, which can result in bitter or sour coffee. 

Similarly, a good grinder can make a lot of difference ensuring that there is consistency throughout the grind. Rogue larger or smaller granules will interfere with a smooth extraction and leave your coffee tasting bitter or sour, so a high-quality grinder is preferable, if possible.

Keep Brew Equipment Clean

It’s something that we do in every other part of our life and must be remembered in brewing too. Spencer Turer, Vice President of Coffee Enterprises in Vermont, says, “Always start with a clean brewer in like-new condition. Never use a filthy coffee brewer or brew basket. You wouldn’t cook your meal in a dirty pot – don’t brew your coffee in a dirty brewer.” 

This is a quick-fire way to change the way you’re brewing. Make these changes and see how different your brew tastes.

Measure Your Brews

Andrés tells me “measure everything”. This includes the weight of your coffee and water to temperature and time. The more specific you can be while brewing, the better results you can expect.

This way you can create your own recipes and learn what you might have to do when you try out a new coffee.

Alter Your Water Quality

Water makes up the majority of a coffee, which is why it can have such an impact on flavour. Syahirah Halim, ex-barista at Patricia Coffee Brewers in Melbourne, explains that “the hardness of water is key as compounds present in water such as magnesium, calcium, and bicarbonate affects how the coffee will taste.”

If you want to get scientific, investigate what levels of compounds are present in your water and what the pH level is and how this affects the taste of your coffee. A pH level of seven is neutral, so aim for this.

Play With Your Brew Recipe

It is always good to have a starting point, so follow suggested brew recipes and ratios. Look into what these are from this article, or look around for alternatives. But remember, it’s always down to you and your taste preferences. Learn from the process and enjoy it.

How To Use a Bong

Once you have chosen a cannabis bong it’s time to get it ready for use. Follow the steps below to use the bong.

Step 1:

Insert the downstem that came with it into the small hole near the base of the bong then fill the it with enough water so the holes at the end of the downstem are completely covered. These holes are called percolators and it isn’t just downstems that have them.

Bongs can come with one, two, or more ‘perks‘ built in. A bowl or ‘slide’ will sit in the downstem and most bongs will come with both these items. Yes you can purchase more from a glass blower or your local bong shop if you choose to expand your glass collection. Bowls start off fairly cheap but can get pretty pricey depending on how elaborate you want them.

Step 2:

Once your bong is all set up you’re going to want to grind or ‘bust up’ some cannabis and fill your bowl. There are numerous screens to choose from if you want to prevent larger particles from making it to the water in your bong. Glass, brass, or steel as well as some bowls come with them built in.

Step 3: Now it’s time to put the bong to your mouth, light your bowl and inhale.

Bonus tip: add ice to the neck chamber of your bong for the smoothest hit you’ll ever have. This is my favorite way to smoke cannabis in the summer. You can also customize how big of a hoot you want by simply adding more or less cannabis flower, big or small it’s your choice.

You can buy pre rolled empty cones which come with filters already in them or you can buy a pack of rolling papers. Can’t roll a joint? Have no fear because raw cones are the perfect match for you. All you have to do is load your desired flower in the paper and twist the end. There are tons of rolling paper brands to choose from, just to mention a few there are raw rolling papers, zig zag/zigzag, rizzla, and juicy j rolling papers.

How to Prepare and Use Joints

Follow the steps below to prepare the different types of joints available.

Pre Rolled Empty Cones

Step 1:

To use a cone, all you have to do is fill it with ground up cannabis and twist off the end.

How to roll a Joint

Step 1:

To roll your own, you’re going to want to either get a rolling machine or place your paper with a filter onto your tray or table.

Step 2:

Next, pour some marijuana onto the center of the paper.

Step 3:

Now comes the fun part. Carefully pick up the rolling paper being sure not to spill any contents,and slowly roll the center between your fingers to evenly distribute the cannabis but be careful to not use too much pressure otherwise you could rip the rolling paper.

Step 4:

Gently roll it up to the gum line, the gum line is the thin strip of glue at the end of the paper, you’re going to want to lick that strip lightly then roll it all the way up to the top so the the paper sticks to itself and complete your joint making sure it is sealed.

Step 5:

Optional: If you find that your joint is a little wet or you used a little too much saliva to glue the paper together, don’t worry. This can be fixed easily by using a lighter and putting the flame underneath the joint about (approximately 1-2 inches) . Move the flame back and forth slowly,  doing this will allow that flame to dry all moist contents within the paper. Just be sure to put the wet part is at the bottom of the joint. Once completed properly, this will allow the best even burning joint. Once you’re done rolling the joint, you can smoke it immediately or take it with you to enjoy it another time.

Joints can range in size depending on your preference. Anything from a small ‘pinner’ or ‘mosquito leg’ type to a mid ‘cigarette’ size all the way up to your larger joints, ‘fatties’, ‘cannons’ and ‘post’.

They also allow you to taste the full terpene profile more consistently. Smoking on cannabis in joint form is the most classic way of inhaling marijuana as well as the cheapest.

Joints take more cannabis than a lot of other methods but will usually result in a longer lasting high.

All you have to do is load your desired flower in the paper and twist the end. How to Prepare and Use Joints

Follow the steps below to prepare the different types of joints available.

Pre Rolled Empty Cones

Step 1:

To use a cone, all you have to do is fill it with ground up cannabis and twist off the end.

How to roll a Joint

Step 1:

To roll your own, you’re going to want to either get a rolling machine or place your paper with a filter onto your tray or table.

Step 2:

Next, pour some marijuana onto the center of the paper.

Step 3:

Now comes the fun part. Carefully pick up the rolling paper being sure not to spill any contents,and slowly roll the center between your fingers to evenly distribute the cannabis but be careful to not use too much pressure otherwise you could rip the rolling paper.

Step 4:

Gently roll it up to the gum line, the gum line is the thin strip of glue at the end of the paper, you’re going to want to lick that strip lightly then roll it all the way up to the top so the the paper sticks to itself and complete your joint making sure it is sealed.

Step 5:

Optional: If you find that your joint is a little wet or you used a little too much saliva to glue the paper together, don’t worry. This can be fixed easily by using a lighter and putting the flame underneath the joint about (approximately 1-2 inches) . Move the flame back and forth slowly,  doing this will allow that flame to dry all moist contents within the paper. Just be sure to put the wet part is at the bottom of the joint. Once completed properly, this will allow the best even burning joint. Once you’re done rolling the joint, you can smoke it immediately or take it with you to enjoy it another time.

Joints can range in size depending on your preference. Anything from a small ‘pinner’ or ‘mosquito leg’ type to a mid ‘cigarette’ size all the way up to your larger joints, ‘fatties’, ‘cannons’ and ‘post’.

They also allow you to taste the full terpene profile more consistently. Smoking on cannabis in joint form is the most classic way of inhaling marijuana as well as the cheapest.

Coffee Gifts for Christmas, For Him, For Her – Perfect Coffee Lovers Presents.

Coffee gifts are something close to my heart, not just because I’m obviously a coffee lover, and whether it’s Christmas, Birthdays – or any other occasion, I love receiving coffee related gifts, of course – but also, because it’s a coffee related present which inspired me to create this blog!

But aside from that, I think generally speaking, adults are quite difficult to buy gifts for – and if you’re looking to buy a gift for coffee lovers, whether it’s for him, for her, for them – there are so many great ideas for gifts, suitable for any occasion, ranging from the inexpensive and affordable, through to darn right ridiculous ;-). 

Here are some ideas for you:

The Coffee Gift Subscription 

The coffee gift subscription has to be up there as one of the best possible gifts for coffee lovers.

Whether it’s for Christmas, Birthdays, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day – or even Valentine’s day, coffee subscriptions are a really special gift which keep on giving, well for as long as the length of the subscription anyway ;-). 

Subscriptions aren’t just about keeping stocked up with coffee, quite a few coffee roasters now offer discovery subscriptions, which offer to broaden the horizons of the coffee loving gift recipient, with different coffees being delivered each time, from different origins, different coffee varietals, different processes and so on. 

Many of the subscription firms offer gift subscriptions, which allow you to purchase a set number of deliveries over a set period, which don’t automatically renew – allowing you to get someone a subscription for a month, or for three months, for example, without ending up paying for their coffee for the next ten years ;-).

Hario V60

This is a fantastic gift for anyone who loves coffee.

If they don’t have one, then you’ll be doing them a huge service by getting them one, if they already have one then they will more than likely be very happy to have a second V60, as it means they can make two coffees at a time, or leave one at work.

The V60 is a pourover coffee dripper, it’s very simple, you put a filter in, put the ground coffee in the filter, pour the water over it, and: filter coffee, in fact, the potential for fantastic coffee! I say potential for, because the user has a big part to play in that, as does the coffee and the grind size, but if you get it right or even anywhere near right with a V60 you’re in for a very enjoyable coffee. 

They’re from about a fiver, depending on which option you go for (plastic or ceramic, and a few different sizes), so a great option is to buy someone a V60 plus a bag of freshly brewed speciality coffee from one of the brilliant small batch coffee roasters, most of which you’ll find on the UK coffee roasters directory.

Aeropress

This is another must-have coffee maker for anyone who is serious about coffee – and as with the V60, even if they already have one, no one will mind having a second one, you’d only use one at a time, but it wouldn’t be a bad thing to have one in the office and one at home for instance.

Aeropress was invented a few years ago by the Bill Adler, the genius who invented the Aerobie flying disk.

He was stood in the office kitchen drinking a slightly bitter coffee from the electric filter machine, while discussing with a colleague about how there should be a better way to quickly make a great single cup of coffee, and then decided that since he’s an inventor who specialises in aerodynamics, he should be able to rise to this challenge – and he did!

Aeropress is awesome, and it isn’t just novice home Barista’s like me who think so, a growing number of professional Baristas brew coffee with Aeropress, and there are even national and international Aeropress championships.

If the person you’re looking for a coffee gift for likes to travel, or to go camping or hiking for instance, then it makes Aeropress an even better prospect, as it’s very portable, easy to stick in a bag to take out when needed, and all you need to use it is ground coffee and hot water. When it comes to cleaning, you just push the plunger and a puck of used coffee grounds pops out, and then you give it a wipe or a rinse, and that’s that.

They’re about £20 or £25 if you go for the one with the Aeropress zip up storage tote bag.

Keepcup

Having a decent coffee in a paper cup is a no-no for a speciality coffee lover, or at least a ‘would prefer not to’, and keepcup is one of the leading brands of reusable cups.

They make them in a wide range of shapes, sizes, colours and materials. They range in price from about a fiver upwards, and I really don’t think you can go wrong with a keepcup as a gift for someone who loves coffee.

Using reusable cups vs. disposable takeaway cups is of course also an issue when it comes to the environment, due not only to the vast amount of trees that are used in creating takeaway cups, but also the ridiculous amount of paper cups that are put into landfill each year!

  Goat Story

Along the same lines as keepcup, but more unique, is the Goat Story travel coffee cup. I really like the look of the Goat Story cup, they’re completely mad, which I think is brilliant ;-), who would think of making a coffee cup in the shape of a goat horn?

The idea comes from the contentious story of the origins of coffee, and the goats munching on coffee cherries.

They look and feel like a really good quality product, they come with a holder and strap, and can be attached to a bag or carried around the shoulder with the strap, and are available in three material options, faux leather, real leather & hemp, and in a range of colours. 

If you know anyone who would want to carry their coffee around with them on a strap, and not need to be concerned with whether the travel cup is upright, for instance, someone who cycles to work, the Goat Story mug could be a great gift, especially if that person likes things which are a bit alternative.

Freshly roasted coffee beans

I can’t think of a much better idea for an inexpensive coffee gift idea than freshly roasted coffee beans!

I’ve mentioned subscriptions already, but if you didn’t want to buy someone a coffee subscription, another idea would be to buy them a bag or two, or three, depending on how generous you’re feeling ;-).

I would recommend that you first ascertain whether or not the person you’re buying a gift for has a coffee grinder. If they have a grinder then obviously go for whole beans, if they don’t then find out what their favourite brewing method is, and source a freshly roasted coffee ground for that brew method.

To really treat someone who loves coffee, get them some freshly roasted coffee beans from one of the many small batch coffee roasters in the UK. 

You can expect to pay roughly £6 – £12 for 250g bag of freshly roasted coffee beans – well worth it in my opinion, and in the relatively near future with what is happening at the moment with climate change, we’ll probably look back nostalgically at these prices when we’re paying far more for coffee beans!

  Home Barista Course

Here’s a great idea for gift for speciality coffee lovers – a home barista course! 

If you know someone who loves coffee, who would love the chance to not just be a coffee lover, AKA “coffee snob”, but actually be a trained home barista.

This course is just £49, it’s a two hour course, and the guys at Winchester Coffee School take the home barista through what basically seems to be a slightly scaled down version of their professional barista training, including training on the grinder, Espresso machine, technique, milk steaming, and more. If the coffee lover you’re buying for already has a setup, they can take their Espresso machine and grinder along with them, so they’re learning on their own gear – if not, they can use the in-house equipment.

Personally, I think a course like this, for the sake of fifty quid, is a must-have for any budding home barista. Apart from anything else, proper home barista prosumer gear is expensive, and learning to properly maintain it via a course like this to extend the life of the kit, is easily worth more than the cost of the course in terms of how much longer the kit is likely to last as a  result, if you ask me. Plus, if you’re going to make Espresso at home – you may as well make the very best Espresso possible, and I’m speaking from experience when I say that training makes a big difference! They also do a latte art training course, which I might actually do myself… I can pour Latte art, to a certain degree, but I’d love some more training focused purely on pouring latte art.

  The Sage Smart Grinder Pro

You won’t get much change from £200 (click here to check the current Amazon UK price) but this is a brilliant coffee grinder for home if you’re looking to spend a bit more on the special coffee lover in your life. 

To the uninitiated, this may seem like a crazy amount of money to spend on a coffee grinder, however, if you’re in the coffee industry you’ll know this is actually a very low-cost grinder, in fact, some don’t even class this grinder as a prosumer grinder! 

Prosumer means commercial level gear made for the consumer market, and I certainly do class the smart grinder pro as prosumer, having had mine for over 2 years now, but some of the most popular coffee grinders cost £300 and then some – with many in the range of £500-£1,000 or even higher. 

One of the great things about this grinder is it’s so easy to change the grind for various different processes, and it’s fine for practically all methods, from Cafetiere all the way to Espresso, so regardless of which coffee brewing method the person you’re buying from favours, they’ll love the smart grinder pro. 

DeLonghi ESAM 4200 Bean to Cup Coffee Machine

Again, at about £300 (click here to check the current price on Amazon UK)this isn’t a little gift, so we may be going way out of your price range here, but still – there may be some people reading this who’re specifically looking for a bean to cup coffee machine as a Christmas gift or birthday present, for a loved one – or even for yourself ;-). 

Some speciality coffee lovers, myself included, wouldn’t choose to use a bean to cup coffee machine, but that’s not to say that they’re not a great option for many coffee lovers. 

I prefer to use manual espresso machines, I prefer to have the full control that I have from using a separate grinder and espresso machine, but I do recognize the fact that using a semi-automatic espresso machine – or a manual machine such as my La Pavoni Euripiccola, isn’t for everyone.

The difference is that some coffee lovers want to be home baristas, while some don’t. Being a home Barista is a hobby, it involves investing a lot of time and cash – while many coffee lovers don’t have the time or inclination to embark on such a hobby, and just want to put great speciality coffee beans in the top, and get great coffee out at the bottom – and for these coffee lovers, I think bean to cup machines are great. 

Sure, having a separate decent grinder and prosumer espresso machine gives the potential for incredible shots of Espresso, but let’s be honest – skill is very important when it comes to Espresso – and there’s also the potential for terrible shots of Espresso that belong in the sink – while bean to cup machines might not quite have the potential for the same god shots that you may hope to master in the longrun, they do make pretty darn good espresso straight out the box – as long as you’re using pretty darn good coffee beans, of course.

Today we have another exciting episode for you and today where I’m at in all places in the world is I’m here at the tradeshow and I’m here at the tribest booth and why I have this episode today is because I want to do literally a torture test on the solostar 4 single auger horizontal juicer, right You know the horizontal auger style juicer has many pros and cons and you know the thing that I like about horizontal machines is that really the horizontal machines, and this is a multi-purpose horizontal machine, is that basically the design stems from the classic, frankly meat grinder that was converted by Ann Wigmore to juice wheatgrass and wheatgrass is one of the hardest things to juice so in most cases I recommend people get a dedicated wheatgrass juicer that they want to juice wheatgrass But that being said, you might be able to spend just a little bit more and then sometimes actually a lot less and get a multipurpose juicer to juice wheatgrass as well as so many other things While this machine does… While this machine does excel at juicing wheatgrass and other different, you know, fibrous leafy green vegetables, it will also juice things like carrots, you know, and apples and other fruits That being said, this machine is specifically designed and does the best at juicing leafy green sprouts, medicinal herbs, if you’re, you know, into that kind of stuff

In addition, this machine is also a multipurpose machine It can make things like frozen fruit sorbets, nut butters, grind and mince your herbs and spices and even grind your coffee up for you guys if you guys need to do that There’s many different horizontal auger machines on the market but I like to use this machine for the wheatgrass for one specific reason; this machine actually number one will save you guys money unlike other machines on the market, the way this machine is designed, it actually has a lower wattage motor with high torque due to some of the torque conversion, so it has about, like, an equivalent five horsepower of the torque to really get in there and juice everything up in addition unlike other single auger machines on the market, this runs at a low and slow 57 revolutions per minute you know most other machines are like 80 rpm so this is actually slower and in addition, the reason why I like this is because the long 15 year warranty which is the longest warranty in the juicing industry so, literally you’re going to be assured for the next 15 years you’ll be juicing your wheatgrass or other things Another reason why I like this is because actually, this in my testing actually has gotten the highest yield of any of the horizontal auger juicers, right, and the reason for that is because when we take this unit apart, you’re gonna see that this machine actually has the largest screen size and it has actually you know more surface area of the screen for juice to come out, so this means you’re gonna get a higher yield The other thing it means, consequently also is that its going to take a bit longer to cleans because there are more holes which may get clogged with pulp

In addition, another feature of this machine is that this has the GE Ultem auger It’s eight times harder than augers previously on single auger style machines In addition, besides being harder, this is also longer Hey, longer and harder, how many people don’t like that? But yeah, this is also longer so that means, you know, there’s more travel time, there’s more contact time with the auger for it to grind up, squeeze and crush out the juice in this extra long stream there Also, this machine is very simple and easy to clean

There’s just a few parts, you know: this top housing, the auger, the screen, and then finally the end cap here and this is an adjustable end that you could put on a different end caps Today I’m using the larger one This is the one you guys should be using for wheatgrass, don’t use the smaller end cap, you know that may cause some challenges So, we’re just gonna go ahead and put this together Basically, you put the main body on, you put the auger in, then you put the screen in and make sure the screen, when you put it in, it says upper and its always facing up right

You slide that in and then finally you put this end cap on and just slide it in place and that’s how easy it is to assemble and then you basically get two collection cups You know, one to catch the juice, one to catch the pulp and you also have optional sieves here You have one that fits actually on top of the juice collection cup and then you have an additional one in case you want to get some of the extra pulp out So, what we’re going to juice today is wheatgrass and I’m not just gonna juice like one flat of wheatgrass, I like to do like juicer torture tests and I’ll show you guys totally what happens if this machine breaks while I’m trying to juice not only one, two, three, four, five, six lots of wheatgrass through this machine, uncut, unedited, we’re going to find out what happens So, I mean, yeah, with that I guess lets go ahead and get started with the juicing in the solostar four machine by tribest

Super simple, super easy to use, basically there’s an on/off switch, its relatively quiet and its going forward If the machine does get backed up, you’re gonna want to hit the reverse button just to get the jam reversed out and unstuck So, we’re gonna go ahead and turn this on and, you know, today we are using wheatgrass actually grown in the tribest wheatgrass grower here And this is just really nice stuff, look at this, like all the roots right down in there, going through, you could dump this upside down and its not gonna go anywhere Anyways, what we’re gonna do is just take it out of the little tray here so that I can cut it easy and we’re just gonna go right ahead and cut it off with the scissors and put handfuls through the machine and one of the nice things is with this machine, although you do get a pusher that I have right here to push things in, you know, if you cut things small enough and don’t drop in like big wads of wheatgrass, literally this machine will auto feed itself

Now, don’t worry if your machine makes some, you know, noises like that when juicing, completely normal Wheatgrass is a great food to be juicing I mean, we are not designed to basically digest grass, I mean, cows can do that, we can’t and so that’s why I like to use a juicer with literally liberates the juice from the fibre and it’s the juice from the fibre which feeds you, said Jay Kordich, formerly known as the juice man So, as you guys can see, you know, we’ve got some auger movement on there, but that’s completely normal, I see the juice coming out of the screen and we got some of the pulp starting to come out now This is definitely gonna take me a little while

The best way to juice wheatgrass is just you know put a little bit in at a time and not just try to like cram it in all at once So, probably what I’m gonna do for you guys to kind of make this more fun and enjoyable, cause I’m just gonna be sitting here juicing, we’re just gonna keep this in real time, we’re not gonna speed it up, so you guys can see the whole process and we’re just gonna play some nice music while I’m juicing and we’ll come back at you when I have, you know, something to say or something’s going on with the machine I mean, pretty much so far, so good Maybe we’ll update you after actually I juice every flat Alright, so man, just got done juicing one whole flat of wheatgrass, as you guys can see this grass has been officially mowed

Probably not the neatest person juicing wheatgrass because I made a big mess but that’s alright because we’re just gonna basically sweep all this up and we’re gonna juice it too Alright and so, this machine has performed so well, you know fairly flawless, you guys saw the process to date, you know I’m gonna keep this running, I’m not gonna stop it Let me see, feel the motor, its not really getting warm yet so that’s definitely a good sign Now generally machines have like a 30-minutes duty cycle and you know this is a torture test so I’m not doing this to show you guys what you guys should be doing like on a daily basis with this machine because this is not designed to juice six flats of wheatgrass day in day out This is by no means a commercial machine

This is good for home use, if you want to juice you know a couple of flats at one time because you’re gonna do some wheatgrass enemas or do other crazy things with it, you know you could do that but normally you would never juice this much wheatgrass because you only want to juice as much wheatgrass as you’re gonna drink in that one sitting You don’t want to like let it sit, make a lot and let it sit in your fridge because the juice is gonna oxidise and you’re gonna lose some of the valuable nutrition in there Generally, people like to… I like to recommend that people start out with like one-ounce wheatgrass shot a day right, and then do that for like a week, two weeks, three weeks and then move up to two ounces right That being said, you know, I want to let you guys know that you know while wheatgrass is a great food and you should grow wheatgrass and juice it, you might also want to juice other kinds of grasses, you know, Kamut grass, Einkorn, which is actually heirloom wheat right

These all have different nutrient properties and in addition just to the wheatgrass you can grow microgreens that you sprout in the solostar four In addition to that you know something more valuable are just the standard leafy green vegetables right: kale, it’s an anti-cancer vegetable right; onions you know you cant juice too many onions, they are kind of strong but onions, you know, juice onion greens, another amazing anti-cancer food and the solostar four can juice all those things Anyways, let’s go ahead and continue on with flat number two Alright, second flat down and as you guys can see, this grass has been mowed Alright, wait, I’ve got a couple more cuts

So, I want to share with you guys actually some of the process that I’ve been doing here, just juicing that you guys have been watching here for the last, I don’t know how many minutes, but were just gonna go ahead and get some of the stray grass here I didn’t go to school for grass cutting but yeah, it gets kind of messy here So, some of the things I’m noticing all right, so number one I want you guys to check this pulp out, I mean, these are literally ropes of pulp here, I mean it turned from the grass to the ropes of pulp and I can take this pulp in my hand and squeeze it, and I can squeeze a little bit of juice out right So if you’re one of those people that like want to get every ounce of juice out right, that’s alright, take some of this, don’t put it in the hole, but you know, take little small pieces off and then run it back through the machine, you know little bit at a time right and you’ve got to take this stuff apart because if you put this whole thing through the machine, you’re likely to break the machine, but if you take off little small chunks at a time it’ll go back in and re-squeeze that pulp to get it even drier, you know For the sake of this video, I’m not gonna re-squeeze all my pulp, I simply don’t have the time, this videos already going to be long enough because I’ve still got, you know, four more flats to juice

But yeah, I want to let you guys know that and the other thing is that this pulp is a little bit warm so don’t be alarmed you know, juicing wheatgrass this volume is pretty much going to heat up any juicer doing it because basically the heat is not created because of any high speed It is because… it’s created due to some of the friction and the forces here at the end when the machines trying to wring out the wheatgrass, so that is completely normal That being said, the wheatgrass is not going to be completely boiling or exceed you know, probably over a hundred and eighteen degrees So alright, so now we’re officially done with two flats, let’s go ahead and grab this next flat and let’s get juicing Alright, finally, got done with flat number three and you know that being said, what I want to share this time is that, you know, every time I would cut some wheatgrass and put it in, you know, instead of just stuffing in a large handful and then pushing it in with the pusher, what I like to do is actually just put a little bit of wheatgrass in and kind of let it drop in on its own and let it self-feed

That way you’re not going to be overfeeding right One of the challenges I see when people are juicing wheatgrass is that they just try to stuff a lot in and cram it in and juice as fast as they can and remember, these are slow juicers, they’re not designed to, you know, be crammed stuff in, you’ve got to kind of take your time Now I just want to let you guys know that it has been a little while, the third flat has been juiced and the machine is notably getting warm right around on the body but the… this housing here is not warm except maybe near the tip It’s about the same warmth as it was earlier right and once again the pulp coming out, a little bit warm, but you know, by no means is it gonna burn you so once again let’s go ahead and clean up some of this grass I’ll show you guys that we got another cut flat here and now were gonna sweep this stuff up and put it through the juicer and then we’re gonna go ahead and grab out next flat

Alright, so just got done with the fourth flat as you guys can see, this grass has been mowed So what I want to do for you guys now is actually, you know, talk to you guys about, like, an automatic versus handheld juicer, you know I know those handheld juicers that you can hand crank for wheatgrass are not so expensive but trust me, you would hate life if you had to juice literally six flats of wheatgrass in a hand-cranked juicer It’s definitely not fun If you’re gonna do an ounce or two it’s not a problem, but I highly encourage you guys to actually get an electric model

I mean, its already work enough of just cutting the wheatgrass, getting it in the hole without making a mess of the table here, so hand cranking, man, I’m really not into that stuff I mean we have electricity now, right, but that being said, if you lose electricity in your house and you still want to get your wheatgrass, the solostar 4 machine is the only machine on the market that actually has an optional attachment right This attachment literally will take this end cap here, you could put it on this machine, clamp this baby down on your counter and then you can hand crank your wheatgrass and let me tell you guys, once you guys use an electric you’re not gonna want to use a hand crank unless the power goes out and you have no electricity to do it otherwise right So, I’m glad that they have actually this unit so you guys have that option So yeah this…

This grass has been mowed once again We’re gonna go ahead and sweep some of this stuff up, clean up the table here a little bit and we’re gonna go ahead and continue juicing Alright, I’m happy to say I’m done with the fifth flat here, as you guys can see this has totally been mowed, we’re just gonna go ahead and put some of the last grass in here Now the thing I want to say is that you know, the solostar four is the fourth version of the solostar You know, I will personally say that the…some of the former version of the solostar four had some challenges right

One of the challenges I saw and it got reports from customers is that this end cap would basically break some of the tabs and it would pop off when there was some excessive force on there or maybe like over time as the parts wore You know, this part has been… or this model has been new and improved and totally reinforced and you know, juicing six flats of wheatgrass is definitely a lot of force, I mean there’s a lot of force being put on these parts This machine has, once again, not been turned off and I will say that it is getting warm once again All the juicing parts, aside for maybe the end over here, are cool except for the end tip and so the other thing that I want to say is that I haven’t had to stop the machine or even reverse it right So, this motor has had sufficient torque to really not get stuck when I… as I’ve been juicing this wheatgrass which is actually quite impressive because I’m sure other machines, you know, you may have to stop, and you know, reverse it if you feed in too much wheatgrass

This machine due to its all… due to its powerful torque has just literally powered all the way through, alright And the other thing, you know, once again I want to reiterate is its very important not to like cram in too much wheat grass in at once, as you guys can see I, like, cut a little bit, feed a little bit and the best way I like to cut it is just cut it and feed it and drop it in and let the machine accept it at its own pace instead of me actually having to push it in So as you guys can see, I’m actually down – if I can grab it out of here – to the last flat of wheatgrass and we’re going to go ahead and get juicing Alright, so as you guys can see, man, I got done that last sixth flat here of wheatgrass Its been mowed officially and now I’m just gonna go ahead and put in the stragglers here and I’m gonna show you guys my thoughts on juicing six flats of wheatgrass

This is the most wheatgrass I’ve ever juiced in one sitting and don’t worry I’m not gonna drink all that wheatgrass because I swear if I drink that much wheatgrass I’d probably… you know it’d probably be coming up That would not be good But since I’m at the trade show, you know, people here today are going to be able to drink this wheatgrass juice But you know, this machine once again has been running solid for literally like, I don’t know how long it’s been, probably like an hour or so now without stopping This is not recommended

It’s recommended a thirty-minute duty cycle After thirty minutes, you turn it off, let it rest for fifteen minutes and then keep juicing Once again, as I mentioned before, this is not a commercial juicer You know, we do have commercial wheatgrass juicers if that’s what you want to do but for a home juicer I think this is amazing I mean literally, I juiced six flats of wheatgrass one after the other without turning the machine off, without stopping it

It hasn’t stopped once It didn’t clog up once I didn’t have to use the reverse switch once It’s worked amazing and about the only thing I would say is that I wish it had actually a larger feed chute so that I could actually more easily put the wheatgrass in because you know, I kind of missed a few and I guess yeah… So, once you’ve put the last couple blades of grass and you want to let it run just a little bit to extract out the rest of the juice, how you’ll know it’s done is that like… this end here where the pulp is coming out which once again you know, I do want to let you guys know that it is a little bit warm but not that warm You know, as soon as the pulp stops coming out and the juice stops dripping and then you’re completely done

This is, like, a lot of wheatgrass pulp and check it out man, as it comes out its kind of like totally, literally, I mean literally the machine is crushing it, squeezing it and wringing it up and its twisting it all up This looks like some dude’s hair, maybe, but its green And then we got all the wheatgrass here so basically this wheatgrass… I know I like that this machines comes with a little sieve here and this allows you to basically skim off the foam so the foam does not… any major foam does not get in your juice in addition if you miss the hole like I did today you know that’s not gonna get into your juice either So what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna take that and what I like to do is just tap that down a little bit, make sure we got all the juice off and basically what it is, is the… all the little… the foam here is basically just wheatgrass juice with air so if you let this sit a while it’ll basically condense down back into the juice, right

So, we’re gonna go ahead and take that off here and we’re gonna go ahead and use this to pour in… this was getting full earlier so I had to actually empty it out into this glass pitcher here, we’re gonna fill that up and if I fill this up all the way I think it would overflow, but basically, I mean, to me it looks like I’ve made literally about, maybe a quart of wheatgrass juice, juicing flats straight in the solostar four juicer without any incident right So, if you guys are looking for a wheatgrass juicer that’s durable, that’s solid, that’s gonna save ten percent more energy than any other machines out there because its got a lower wattage motor although it has more torque due to some of the gearing ratios that solostar four juicer is for you This machine does come in white and also a chrome plated plastic model which is you know a little bit more expensive, looks a little bit nicer Oh, and the final thing I want to show you guys actually, is how easy this unit is to clean Okay, so once you’re done there’s only a few parts to clean and when juicing wheatgrass, it’s a breeze

Literally, I turn on the hot water tap and basically take the brush included and just scrub it out and literally, I’m taking this machine apart and I’m so amazed that, you know, I’m not having to like… it’s stuck on there because all the pulp, like, jammed in there It was actually really easy to remove This is the end cap part Literally, if you just blast some water through there, its going to be totally clean Next were gonna go ahead and take out the juicing screen there, and as you guys can see, the juicing screen is very clear on the outside

We have a little bit of foam there, but there’s no major pulp impacted inside the screen You know, there’s very little wheatgrass inside there, so that’s quite impressive I mean, once again, put this under the sink; its gonna rinse off really easily Yeah, really quickly and easily Finally, we have the auger here and once again the auger is really easy and quick to clean once again, you know, there’s no stuck in pulp or anything like that

I would use a little bit of soap and water, you know, just to get some of the green chlorophyll pigments off Now, I will let you guys know that if you’re juicing six flats watch out for this auger here This at the end, this metal piece, it’s a little bit warm but its not warm enough to burn you I mean, this machine has literally been running for an hour straight to make over a quart of wheatgrass And then finally, we have the piece here

Look at that This is really simple and easy to clean There’s no major, you know, pulp or anything, you just blast this with water and then you’ll be all done So yeah, I mean, I’m amazing and impressed on how well the solostar four did juicing literally six flats of wheatgrass and beside juicing wheatgrass, this juicer will also juice other things So, if you guys are looking for a wheatgrass juicer, you know, I encourage you guys to get a multipurpose machine that will do more than just wheatgrass because, you know, as wheatgrass is amazing food, as evidence by Ann Wigmore and many other people, there’s so many other different foods, fruits and vegetables that have many different and unique and good properties that you guys should be juicing so you guys can get them into you

But David Siik, a Los Angeles-based running instructor who created the Precision Running program for Equinox gyms, is on a mission to rehabilitate the much-maligned machine. “I fell in love with indoor running because I actually believed that [the treadmill] was such a magnificent piece of engineering,” he says. “We created a moving ground.”

Here’s how he and other experts have made amends with the apparatus—and how you can maybe, just maybe, look forward to your dates with it.

Appreciate the benefits

“The first step to learning to love the treadmill is to change your attitude about it,” says Chris Mosier, a four-time member of Team USA in duathlon and triathlon and a coach in Chicago. Consider this: Unlike essentially any other piece of gym equipment, the treadmill contains a computer that allows you to program and fine-tune every aspect of your workout. “Imagine if your Macbook had a [treadmill] belt. It really is that sophisticated,” Siik says.

Indoor running offers all the health benefits of hitting the roads, from a healthier heart to stronger legs to improved mood. And there are some added perks: The softer belt reduces impact compared to hard pavement or concrete. Plus, you’re protected from sun exposure and air pollution. “It all comes back to the same thing: ‘Wow, this machine is pretty awesome,’” Siik says.

Crafting a plan for your time there—even one as simple as increasing your speed by two clicks every minute for 10 minutes—changes the dynamic of the relationship. “I know it sounds a little bit silly, but that tiny bit of interaction with your machine creates a connection,” Siik says. “It starts to erode boredom and gives you something to accomplish.”

Trick the clock

Another effective strategy to beat treadmill boredom: After you warm up, add 30 seconds of faster running every five minutes, recommends David Roche, a pro trail runner and coach. “When you’re doing intervals, the rest periods feel like they’re so short—time seems to speed up. Then during the fast stuff, time slows down. You can really use that to your advantage,” he says.

Follow an exciting workout…

Take things beyond the basics by picking out a fun-sounding workout from a magazine or website. We’ve got some right here, and Siik offers more in his book, The Ultimate Treadmill Workout: Run Right, Hurt Less, and Burn More with Treadmill Interval Training ($17, amazon.com).

Or, get creative and craft your own. Even if you don’t know a lot about running, you can likely scribble out a basic 20- to 30-minute plan. Another bonus of running on the treadmill? The ability to tangibly track your progress. After you find a workout you like, repeat it a few times, bumping up your speed or distance as you’re able. Jot down your stats in a notebook, or snap a pic of the treadmill’s display once you finish.

Over time, you’ll notice improvements, whether it’s covering more mileage, increasing your speed, or just feeling better as you do it. “That’s kind of the poetry of running—a micro change in your speed, your pace, or your form adds up to so much by the end of a workout,” Siik says. “With treadmill running, you’re able to create your own goals and monitor them.”

Research shows music can make nearly any workout feel easier and more enjoyable. Pro runner and coach Kaitlin Gregg Goodman uses a device called a Mighty ($86, bemighty.com) to listen to Spotify playlists through her wireless headphones (essentials to avoid dangling-cord mishaps)–without her phone.

On extra-long treadmill runs, she totes her iPad to the gym to stream old favorites, such as Friends. “I prefer to watch shows I’ve already seen so I don’t have to be super tuned in—it can make me a little motion sick,” she says. If your treadmill comes equipped with a TV, turn it into a workout tool. “Run the commercials at a harder pace and recover during the show,” Mosier says.

Turn your focus inward

Sometimes paying more—not less—attention to your body’s movements can make your workout more fulfilling and fun. “Try scanning from head to toe as you are running,” says Mackenzie L. Havey, a Minneapolis runner and coach and author of Mindful Running. As you consider each area of the body, notice whether you feel loose or tight, strong or weak, pain-free or achy.

You can also try concentrating on your breath, following it in and out of your mouth, nose, or chest. “While this might feel tedious at first, with some practice it has a way of getting you to just focus on what’s going on in the moment, rather than having your mind get caught up in a negative cycle of thinking about how boring or painful treadmill workouts can be,” Havey says.

Unlike outdoor running, treadmills literally put you on the path to nowhere, Siik admits. Still, every gym has at least a few focal points of interest. If the setup and crowds allow, break your workout up by switching machines every so often. “That way you have a different view out the window, a different TV you’re staring at,” Gregg Goodman says. If it helps you make it through, reward yourself with a mini-distraction like checking Instagram for a minute before starting your next segment.

Take a class

Many gyms now offer treadmill classes along the lines of Precision Running at Equinox. Plus, a growing number of treadmill-specific studios are popping up across the country, including Mile High Run Club in New York, Runner’s High in Chicago, and Barry’s Bootcamp, which combines running with weight lifting in multiple cities. These sessions provide instruction, encouragement, and a built-in team to match you, stride for stride. “It’s so inspiring and motivating to know that there are other people around you going through the same thing as you,” Siik says.

Try a simple adjustment to your facial expression instead.
