One of the scenes that really got to me in the second Ace novel was when Ace, Thatch, and Teach were talking about Devil Fruits and Thatch said the only DF he thought about eating was the Flame-Flame Fruit (to help with cooking) but since that had already been eaten, he had no Devil Fruit that he wanted to eat.
Which makes me think that he probably wasn't even going to eat the Dark-Dark Fruit even though he found it. I know when it came to DFs, the Whitebeard crew had a sort of 'finders keepers' agreement but Thatch wasn't shown to have actually eaten it. Maybe he was planning to but Teach just attacked him before he was able to eat it but I like to think that Thatch had actually decided not to eat it at all.
I already made a post about how Thatch, despite being such a minor character, is actually very important to the plot in One Piece because his murder sets so much in motion but what if he didn't actually have to die and his death only happened to show how evil Teach was.
I like to think about the Tragedy Of It All. Really, what if Thatch wasn't even going to eat the Devil Fruit? What if Teach killed him over it for no reason? I like to think that Thatch would have just given Teach the fruit if Teach had asked. I think that adds to the horror and sadness of the betrayal.
#thatch one piece#marshall d teach#marshall d. teach#whitebeard pirates#one piece#I'm not saying teach SHOULD have asked first or that thatch SHOULD have offered it#I'm just saying that it didn't HAVE to happen the way that it did#because at the end of the day teach killing thatch set so much in motion that changing that would change one piece as a whole#teach still should have killed thatch. he just maybe didn't HAVE to is part of the tragedy#obviously the story is better for it#but part of what makes it so good and compelling to me is that the tragedy didn't actually have to happen
