It's that time of year again. I need betas! This is my newest work, a high fantasy standalone exploring a culture without sexual or gender binary, complex family dynamics, grief, respect & abuse of nature, and cultural duty.

The reading period will be from June 1st to July 31st.

When Sasha's family farm is attacked by mysterious poisonous creatures from the sea and her sibling is poisoned, she must trek into the most dangerous magical jungle in the world to find a cure. The only person willing to go with her is a nomadic stranger who seems to be lying about who she is and what she wants. Sasha must uncover the truth of both the poison and the stranger, or else it won’t only be her family who suffers, but the entire island.

Meet The Project: Desecrate

Today's @creators-club post is an introduction to what we're going to be focusing on this week, and to no one's surprise that's Desecrate!

I haven't done an Intro post update for Desecrate in a while (Here's the post I currently have), so why not do a new little meet the project for it?

GENRE

Fiction - Dark Fantasy / Dark Academia

STATUS

Re-drafting! I've got about 14k done in this new draft with the plan to finish this one and start another round of Beta reads by the end of the year! Desecrate is already up on GoodReads if you want to keep tabs on it there!

AESTHETIC / TROPES

Religious trauma, Religion in general, queer characters, questioning faith, dream shenaniganery, reading a lot of ancient texts, complaining about college classes, Queer Platonic Partners & Found family in general

This book heavily criticizes the Roman Catholic Church and deals with Catholic Guilt and Religious Trauma 

SUMMARY

What would you do if everything you knew about your faith was flipped on its head?

That's what Kit has been trying to find out. After dropping out of Seminary and giving up on his life's dream of being a priest, he has to piece together the shattered remains of his faith.

But what if those pieces fit together in ways they never have before? What if they reveal a secret that the church has been hiding for millennia? What will he do then?

Adonai's been held in captivity for longer than They can recall. They don't remember what the sun feels like on Their skin, what the wind feels like in Their hair. It's a shame, one of Their only regrets was not fighting back that day.

Their time will come. The Messiah walks among the living once again, and They know that he will free them. Until that day, They will remain patient.

MAIN CHARACTERS

Christian "Kit" Michaels (he/him) - the main character who’s POV we get. Just your everyday guy. Is a Classics student after dropping out of Seminary, does the church thing, lives his life to the best of his ability. Prone to some weird ass dreams

Adonai (he/they) - the subject of Kit’s dreams. They’re… not having a good time at the moment. Or really just ever.

Father Isaac (he/him) - A Priest of the Diocese that Kit goes to. One of the first people Kit goes to after his dreams start. A great confidant, even if he is bound by his faith.

Sister Benedictine (she/her) - Who doesn’t love a nun?? Some of the best people imo. Benny is one of the first people Kit goes to and is ride or die for her pathetic man (they are queer platonic partners, after all)

THE CHARACTERS

Toshiko Egawa, the designated Sword (monster hunter) of a minor Akalese clan. Her staunch faith in her goddess The Lady guides her hand in her fight against monsters.

Fel, a (somewhat reformed) monster of a woman and once-prominent researcher. One of few of a new burgeoning race of [TERM], people who became monsters and have since clawed their way back into humanity.

SUMMARY

Monsters have emerged in the world of Mesiphrae. Former humans, now twisted into unrecognizable forms, cleave claw and fang through those they used to love. Though some countries fare better against the crisis than others, it shows no signs of stopping until the world is overrun.

Toshiko Egawa is no stranger to these monsters. As her clan's Sword, she is regularly tasked with slaying former friend and foe alike. When her newest mission is to escort Fel, a monster of a woman, through the ravaged wastes of Hadorae, she thinks it all to be a cruel joke. But as she grapples with her burning hatred, she is forced to learn the world is not as she once understood it to be and must reconcile her differences to complete her task... and perhaps come to love along the way.

RED

I rotated so my face went under the surface, opening my eyes to see through the crystal clear water. Beneath the magmum floor, I could see glimpses of red, heat rising. The heat here, the last of the extinct volcano, was as ancient as this temple.

ORANGE

A smell wafted to me, separate from the sweet roasted scent from the altar. This one was citrus, like the oranges that grew in the palace garden.

YELLOW

“Well, do whatever you want, I say.” Saya slid off the rock, her bare feet landing on the soft white-yellow sand with a thump. “Done pestering me?” “For tonight,” she said. “Enjoy your brooding alone time on the rock.”

GREEN

But I realized the mess they made wasn’t just from stomping, but a residue left in their wake. It left a faint afterglow, a duller green than their skin, that stuck to the dirt and strands of grass. As the afterglow faded away, even in the darkness I could tell it left the blades of grass shriveled and brown and dead.

BLUE

Before I could gawk any further, something skittered by my feet and startled me. It was a salamander, one of the blue ones. It squatted down to see it closer, where I could see its scaley skin. Each scale glowed uniquely, varying shades of blue that, from a distance, looked like one solid color. I ran my finger down the salamander and it nudged me, tail shaking back and forth to assess my threat level. It must have decided I was not a danger to it, as curled up in a circle beneath by finger and let me caress it.

INDIGO PURPLE

The people split down the middle, making room for the familiar voice. Tolai, wearing my favorite of her deep purple robes—the one with the belt made of sand dollars—stepped forth to the front before the warriors and the mysterious monk.

VIOLET BURGUNDY

As if reading my mind, a moth approached me, this one with sharp lines on its wings that reminded me of the triangular pivots of my mami’s earned marks. On the cusp of its larger wings, two small eyes looked back at me, glowing the same burgundy of seers.

WUPDATE: Desecrate

Did yous know that my Wupdates also fall on @creators-club's WIP Wednesday?? What a coincidence!!

There aren't a lot of updates for this week in particular. I'm at roughly 13k out of a projected 120k for this final draft of Desecrate! I'm really hoping to push through and have it fully drafted by the end of the year, which honestly shouldn't be too hard since this is more or less just a redraft, but we'll see!

I've been working on a lot of things for other WIPs as well, especially now that spooky season is underway! I want to start talking more about Incorrect Eyes now that it's published since it's my only true horror story that's out right now. We'll see tho! For now, I'm in the canva mines making pretty pictures to post on IG about it lol

My goals for this upcoming week:

make it through March 20th in Desecrate re-drafting

make at least one in-depth post about the research I've done for this wip (probably a post about Marcionism)

catch up with asks from when I was sick

try not to get sick again

a hike? but like not one that is hard enough to make me sick like saturday

talk more about desecrate just all around

a little snippie to start:

Kit wakes up to a sharp pain in his neck and a heavy weight on his chest. His leg is numb, his arm screaming with the need to move. There’s hair in his mouth, and as he tries to spit it out the person it’s attached to starts to rouse. “G’mornin,” Benny says, her voice thick with sleep as she lifts her head off his shoulder. Kit blinks his eyes open, squinting up at her and groaning a response. He doesn’t want to wake up, but he knows that he’s already flared up his chronic pain enough by falling asleep on the couch that he can’t go back to sleep. Benny braces her arms on the back of the couch behind him, pushing herself up so she’s hovering over top of him. She looks ethereal like this, her long black curls falling down around her face, a dopey smile gracing her lips, and a flush decorating her cheeks. She leans down to kiss his forehead, and Kit’s nose scrunches at the feeling of her hair on his face. “Stop,” he groans, his voice craggly barely above a whisper.
