FFXIV Write 2022 Prompt #2: Bolt

noun - a metal rod or pin for fastening objects together that usually has a head at one end and a screw thread at the other and is secured by a nut

A/N: Yeah that last prompt was ‘sad boi hours’ so we’re doing something a little lighter

“Watcha doing, Miss Thalia?”

Biting back a yelp as she nearly dropped her tool in shock, Thalia sat up. Her eyes began to uncross, having spent nearly a bell squinting through her magnifier, and focused again on her little intruder.

“Kokodi”, she sighed, “you startled me”.

The poor lalafellin lad looked positively morose, and what little irritation Thalia did feel instantly dissipated.

“Sorry, Mama’s still working in the gardens with the others, and she told me to go inside since it might get too hot. I saw you working back here and wanted to see. I didn’t mean to scare you.” With his wide eyes and the sad little pout Thalia could feel herself practically melt.

And his mother did have the right of it. The skywatchers had predicted a particularly nasty heatwave that would last for at least a day or two. If their information was sound (and it usually was), then there was reason to be concerned for the expansive gardens of the Voss family villa. Bebema, Kokodi’s mother, oversaw everything related to the vegetation that grew there, so it stood to reason that she would be quite occupied throughout the day.

“Oh it’s quite alright”, Thalia said, making sure to flash him a reassuring smile. “I actually don’t mind the company. You’re welcome to sit with me if you like”

Kokodi all but beamed, bouncing to one of the chairs at the table Thalia was seated at, situating himself across from her. Once he had a clear view on what her project was, his eyes lit up, mouth letting out a fascinated ‘ooooooh’.

Thalia’s right leg was in need of its routine repairs, and she thought it best to do it before the impending heat worsened any functional issues. Which was why she was set up in one of the villa’s drawing rooms, a cloth spread on the table with her metal leg laid on top, tools to her right, bolts and various other parts to her left, with a magnifier set before her. In hindsight, her little set up probably did seem fascinating in the eyes of a boy nine summers old.

“I didn’t know you built stuff!”

“Oh”, Thalia laughed, “I didn’t build this. One of my sisters did. I simply accompanied her to the Goldsmith’s Guild where she made it, and learned how to properly take care of it”.

“Take care of it?” Kokodi repeated, frowning at the metal leg as if he expected it to squawk like one of the chocobos in the villa's stables.

“Yes”, she said, unable to resist grinning,”I wear it, so it’s important for me to make sure it works properly”.

Any confusion the boy had was quickly replaced by excitement, his mouth dropping open in complete and utter childish shock. And then his stunned silence was replaced with a flurry of questions.

“You wear a metal leg? I’ve never seen you wear one before! That’s amazing! Do you put it on over your leg? Can you do magic with it?”

“Wait! Okay, okay!”, Thalia laughed, holding up her hands as if that could serve as a sufficient barrier to the child's insatiable curiosity.

Once her mirth died down (which took quite a while, as Kokodi’s enthusiasm was quite contagious), she straightened and patted her right thigh, the inconspicuous dip in her skirt evidence of her lack of a lower leg.

“Yes I do wear it. All the time in fact. But not over my leg. I had to….replace it, so to speak”.

Kokodi’s face instantly fell, a furrow to his brow that looked far too troubled at such a young age.

“You don't have a leg anymore?”

Immediately, Thalia felt a pang of regret. Her mind raced as she tried to quickly try to find better wording. She frowned, mulling over how to explain to the boy that it had been the result of a hunting accident in her adolescence. Lying wouldn't do, but she certainly didn't want to scare the poor child.

“I used to. It matched my left leg rather well”, she began slowly, hoping this explanation would suffice. “But…..it got hurt pretty badly. So, my family worked hard to get me this one”, she tapped the metal leg for emphasis.

“And that one doesn't hurt as much?”

Well there was the occasional aches and pains to worry about, but the boy wouldn't benefit from knowing that. Besides, technically it was true. It certainly hurt less than the initial injury that cost her her right leg.

“No, with this new leg I’m all better”

He seemed satisfied with that answer, nodding along before turning his attention back to the assortment on the table.

“Can I help?”

She didn’t want to outright reject the boy, but it was delicate work. As much as she didn’t mind entertaining his curiosity, she couldn’t afford him accidentally damaging it in his eagerness. But she wanted to encourage such open mindedness.

“How about this? You see these pieces here?” She tapped the side of the cloth where various bolts and screws were sitting, bringing the boy’s attention to the assortment of metal. “These are all very important parts that help make my leg work. So I need to make sure I don’t lose a single one. Thing is, it’s quite difficult focusing on fixing something and making sure you have everything you need to fix it”

Kokodi listened intently, which eased Thalia’s worries of discouraging him.

“Well, I think it’d help me immensely if I had a second set of eyes. Making sure none of my pieces go missing. Think you could be that pair of eyes for me?”

“Yes!” came the lad’s immediate answer, and Thalia found herself grinning.

“Perfect. Let’s get to work, shall we?”
