Waste Consciousness - Where do I start?
When I first started gaining interest in adopting a sustainable lifestyle and philosophy, one of the first things I looked into was what I needed. Online I saw several different blog posts and youtube videos describing ‘Kits’ that they put together. Each product seemed pretty uncommon to me and we’re specialized, and most of them you could only get online.
The thing is, to start you don’t need anything.
I believe that if you are looking to start a new lifestyle and way of thinking, especially an eco-conscious one, going out and buying something with your money that will take immense amounts of fossil fuels to get to your doorstep, doesn’t seem like the best way to start. The best way to start in my opinion is with information. Use the internet as a research tool to look into what waste really is, to give you more of an idea of what exactly you are wasting. Some of the things I did initially was to assess my waste. This is where the whole ‘waste jar’ idea came from, and the only time I think it is truly helpful. Take a look into your trashcan, and see what is in it. Take notes of what you see the most of. It may be paper towels, or plastic wrapping, or even tons of food scraps. It will be different for everyone. Tackle on one aspect of your household at a time, and don’t just throw out your trash and ban plastic and trash forever.
What makes up a household?
I separated parts of my household that accumulates trash. The Kitchen, the bathroom and the bedroom. There is no right and wrong way to do this since everyone has a different way of living. Look into each part, and what your trash may look like. Look at the products you're using, what is in them, what are they packaged in and what you actually use vs what you gathered over the years (yes this means look into THAT drawer of junk). Once you have assessed all your belongings and parts of your household, it will be much easier for you to know exactly what you have, how much of it, and how you are impacting the planet.
DON'T FEEL BAD!
When I was going through all my belongings I started to feel extremely disappointed with what I had in possession over the years. Tons of plastic, toxic chemicals, expired products and even doubles or triples of the same product from different brands. I soon realized that being in America and being a target audience of most beauty, self-care, and hygiene products, this was a given and those companies did their job perfectly by selling these products to me without me even realizing it. With Instagram, Youtube and the internet constantly subconsciously selling you things, how can you even notice? You going through your stuff, and even looking into a more sustainable life in the first place IS enough! You are doing more than most of the population in America and even the world. Even questioning it all is a step in the right direction.
If you want to dispose of your belongings, do it properly!
Thankfully, a lot of packaging from recent years are recyclable or reusable. Separate the expired, the recyclable and the reusables. With expired products, dispose of the contents properly (look up ingredients in google to make sure your not pouring oil down the drains) rinse and wash the ones you want to refill or re-use and google the symbols or lettering on the bottom of the packaging along with your zip code or city to see if your recycling program will accept it! If you have any unopened products or things that didn’t work out, you can donate items or give it to a family member or friend.
What I’ve mentioned above so far works great for the bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom when it comes to product packaging. As far as the rest of the trash goes such as food scraps, paper products, and cardboard, you can look into composting either at home or at a program within your city.
From here, when you run out of products, all you need to do is be aware. Most of the products we buy the most frequently fall into food, hygiene, and self-care. If you don’t have access to a grocery store or farmers market without packaging, save it and see what you can recycle or reuse. Read the ingredients, look for any compost or recycle symbols, see if it’s made in the USA or even Google in the store if there is a better DIY version of what you are buying. You don’t need to shop at an expensive health foods store or spend a lot of money buying things online. All you have to do is be aware, question everything, believe in yourself and DON’T GIVE UP! And even if you do give up, know that you tried.
