Always combing through used bookstores for books I didn’t have money for back in the day. This “The History Of Photography” book by Beaumont Newhall came out in 1982 and I couldn’t swing the $18.95 back then. I got it for $7 yesterday at @beachtownbooks in San Clemente🤓. We're ending the weekend with this classic Martini recipe from 'Beaumont's Kitchen: Lessons on Food, Life and Photography with Beaumont Newhall" (aka the Father of Photographic History). If Beaumont's cooking was good enough for Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Henri Cartier-Bresson, to name just a few, it's more than good enough for our quarantine kitchen! "Enjoy immediately," indeed!⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ DRY MARTINI COCKTAIL⁠⠀ 3–4 oz gin⁠⠀ 1 oz dry vermouth⁠⠀ lemon⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ INSTRUCTIONS: Add a few cubes of ice and cold water to a martini glass.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Measure the gin and vermouth, add to the shaker and stir or shake well.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Pour the water ouf of the glass (it should be well-chilled by now). Strain the contents of the shaker into the glass. Evans was very aware of print quality issues and made great efforts to make his images the best they could be. Decades later we still can't print images such as his with any real verisimilitude. In 1973, when Aperture printed this monograph, standards were even lower. Art in museums is sometimes hard to really see in the way the artist intended you to see it in that the work was created for display in a church, a specific place in a specific church. Our experience of the work in its new home can only be diminished. Many photographers assume that "straight" photography--the ideal of making photographs true to their photographic nature without false manipulation--started with Ansel Adams. But, of course, it was already strong well before.
