This was taken with a smaller sensor camera and its greater depth-of-field had included much background foliage that can be quite distracting. So background foliage was ‘burned’ away and darkened in post.

Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is native to the state of Veracruz Mexico but is also a popular ornamental plant, Despite the name, it is not a palm but is in the same family as Agaves and Yuccas. I have one that I got as a seedling that is now about 10 inches tall. I'm not sure how large the one at the greenhouse is but it's well over my head - probably about 10 feet tall. This is a closeup of the expanded caudex which is a distinguishing feature of this plant.

Beaucarnea stricta

Beaucarnea is a genus of monocots with woody trunks having swollen bases, found in southern Mexico and southward into Central America. While formerly placed in the family Nolinaceae, this whole group has recently been moved into the Asparagus Family (as the subfamily Nolinoideae). Much the most commonly grown Beaucarnea is Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly called the Pony Tail Palm (it should be noted, though, that it is not a true palm). In general, Beaucarnea stricta does not branch as much, and its leaves are stiffer and bluer. These are very long-lived plants, and old ones can reach a height of as much as 30 feet (10 m), with a dramatically enlarged base that almost looks like a tortoise shell. All species in Beaucarnea have separate sexes, and our plant is a female, so its tiny flowers lack pollen (see lower photo). They are very attractive to bees, which visit them constantly from the moment the first flowers open. Our plant is flowering for the first time, at about 40 years old!

Beaucarnea recurvata

This plant from southeastern Mexico is often seen as a potted plant, but many of those who grow it are unaware of how huge it can get in the ground in places where below-freezing temperatures are a rarity. It is sometimes called the "pony tail palm", though it is not a palm at all. Instead, it belongs to the subfamily Nolinoideae within the Asparagus Family. Like other plants in this group, Beaucarnea recurvata has separate male and female individuals. As can be seen from the anthers tipped with yellow pollen in the lower photo, our plant is a male.
