Thoughts from a drummer

This project will be carried out in close collaboration with a professional drummer, who initiated the idea in the first instance by expressing their desire for a beat-detecting metronome as a practice tool. They’re keen to contribute design ideas, and ongoing user-experience feedback. As such, the product will be a kind of bespoke tool, tailored in many ways to their needs.

Today I spoke to them in some depth about their ideas of the overall problem that the application will answer to, as well as the use-case scenarios, and features that should be included.

They generally imagine the application as a practice tool that gives the user a visual indicator of the tempo they’re playing at. This can help monitor timing in cases when an audible clicktrack isn’t appropriate, but the musician still wants to stay “in the pocket”.

They said that whilst their band play to a click during live shows, they don’t generally do so during rehearsals, and the visual reference would be useful for these situations. Rehearsals also present situations in which new ideas are developed from scratch, and while it may be easy to recall chord sequences, song structure etc., recalling the precise tempo at which ideas are conceived is more difficult. Analysing audio recordings between rehearsals would obviously be one way around this, but having real-time information could add efficiency to the songwriting process.

I’ve come across a couple of apps (mentioned in a previous post) that perform beat detection and give a basic indicator of tempo, but our discussions have covered features that these existing apps don’t have – the option of playing an audible click for instance, and the ability to control the interval at which the software updates the tempo. The more flexibility and control offered by the application, the wider the variety of use-cases can be envisaged.

They also pointed out the potential usefeulness of being able to send the live metronome via MIDI to a DAW, so that you could sync a project to your playing. If we’re talking about a handset, this could potentially happen via OSC. You could then sync any kind of system to your playing just using your phone, which would be cool. I wonder how much lag there would be.

With regards to the platform for the application: since Ableton’s BeatSeeker seems to offer quite a good and inexpensive desktop solution to audio-controlled live-syncing, I’m inclined to focus on offering a mobile solution. At this stage it would be useful to get some feedback form other musicians about their experiences with beat-tracking tools.
