BIOGRAPHY. his home here in los angeles was nothing like the dorm he’d lived in in japan . it wasn’t similar to his apartment in london either . the lack of personal items had not gone unnoticed when greg had visited him and before it’d been pointed out he had barely taken notice of it . home wasn’t really home anyway – not just because more time was spent on airplanes and long drives than actual downtime . nah . adulthood had long replaced interests of a younger jamie . friendships that had lived for years had been silenced by the pace of business , so had the interest in soccer and the brief curiosity for hiking . all things he had left behind in new zealand a decade ago . things that he missed on some days and tried to spend little thought on on other days .

silently putting away the laundry from his last trip for dynamite – the house quiet as ever , undisturbed as if no one even lived there . but someone did . someone , who perhaps , was in need of change , of a trigger , of something that’d push him over the edge and remind him that this slick and perfect version he had created of himself was not actually who he was . if anything was proof of it , the boxes that crowded the basement were . boxes full of family pictures , old christmas gifts , even his high school’s soccer jersey were still there . all of it proof of a version of him that existed once . perhaps , still did , if the mix of homesickness for a place he did not know and anger over that it had been taken from him , had not turned him sour – had not caused the defense mechanism of searching deflection in work to take over completely .
