- Close your eyes and take a deep breathe. Ask the question I your head, open your eyes and the picture that you can't look away from is your pile.

If you correctly believe that a $10 stock will be valued at $100 five years from now, you can make a killing. If you correctly believe that a $100 stock will be valued at $10 five years from now - but you don't know when it'll drop, or whether it'll rise before then - you probably can't make money off of that.

Both buying and short-selling are in some sense predictions about what other market participants will believe, yes, but successful short-selling requires a lot more knowledge about the market and when its opinions will change, in addition to predicting the fate of the company itself.

This brings us back to the original issue of the original thread: the asymmetry between buying and short-selling means that people with optimistic views of a company can drive its stock up without people with pessimistic views of the company being able to bring its stock back down, even if the pessimists have as much money as the optimists, and even if they're much more grounded in reality. Smart money can't drive out dumb.

lol, I guess this discussion devolved because the original thread contains all kind of issues and it's unclear what kind of point I was trying to make.

I think the very original thing was @raginrayguns obliquely saying that he doesn't think Tesla is overpriced, or at least, that there is no obvious reason why it would be. I have no opinion about that.

In the middle of the thread @raginrayguns comments that "dumb money" is a good explanation for why Tesla was heavily shorted in 2022. I guess that makes some sense? and in fact the price then did go down in 2023, so shorting it back then probably was a smart move.

Then @centrally-unplanned said that "shorts can't mechanically drive down the price of stocks". I disagree with this! I claim that if the SEC made a new rule that "you can't short Tesla" the share price would go up, and if they abolished the rule the price would go down again. Since Elon's wealth is in Tesla stocks, and directly proportional to the share price, it seems fair enough for him to be obsessively angry about short selling. And like @unreliabledragon said, you can get this effect just from the "effective supply": even if nobody changes their mind about the long-term prospects of Tesla in (say) the weeks after the rule change, the price should still move just because of supply and demand. That's what the example I posted is meant to illustrate.

Can you tell us about your version of Lifty and Shifty?

An excuse to type an essay on my HCs for the twins? Hell yeah!

Short version:

Lifty

Lifty is an optimist, sensible in the long-term

Worries about his brother's mental and physical health constantly

Knows when putting his feelings first is necessary

Very social and quick to trust

Shifty

Shifty is a pessimist, no regard for long-term consequences

Tries to keep Lifty from worrying about his condition

"Edgy" and can't quite grasp the concept of self-care

Anti-social and trust is a lie

Below is the longer version. Gonna write an entire paper on my Lifty and Shifty HCs

My version of Lifty was always more optimistic and reckless, with more of a "you only live once" kind of mindset. This bears a large contrast to Shifty's constant pessimism and cautious nature regarding short-term consequences and effects. In addition to this, Lifty knows how to draw a line with his actions (He's not going to drink the very obviously labelled bleach just to find out what it tastes like), but Shifty doesn't. Their differing views and thought processes often lead to very heated arguments about almost anything (They argued over a spoon once), but often the topic of conversation is Shifty's deteriorating health.

Dynamic

Shifty is very logical when it comes to planning, while Lifty is more emotion-led. Lifty gets excited very easily, and is the type of person you wouldn't trust with a secret if it involves anything even remotely enjoyable. Shifty is quite the opposite, being able to keep his composure in most situations unless Lifty or someone close to him is in immediate danger (In which case he becomes a nervous wreck prone to sudden acts of violence if provoked) Shifty is also fairly quiet (Unrelated to his damaged larynx) while Lifty doesn't know when to stop the conversation, and will just keep talking until someone else breaks it up. Lifty is constantly reminding Shifty that he needs to take care of himself, but he can't even remember to drink water and eat on his own, so Lifty basically has a full-time job nagging Shifty to do the bare minimum to keep himself functioning.

Relationships

Lifty, being the social butterfly that he is, has quite a few friends (Russell, Toothy, Flaky, Cuddles, the list goes on...). He also finds it very easy to empathize with others, and as a result is a lot better at cheering people up than his brother. Shifty on the other hand doesn't consider very many people "friends". He only really has three, those being Russell, Flaky and Toothy. He has an extremely hard time trusting people, and finds it hard to empathize with anyone at all. Although he isn't able to understand anyone else's feelings, he still tries to be as respectful as he can when it comes to heavier topics. Shifty is absolutely terrified of Flippy. Lifty doesn't understand this fear, and thinks it's just one of those irrational fears. It is not.

Shifty has a small rip in his right ear. Lifty doesn't. Shifty has a hat. Lifty doesn't. I don't know what you expect lol

Also Lifty is bisexual and Shifty is gay and asexual

Eyes: Her right eye is a pink/violet color with a white limbal ring. The left was lost in a hunting accident and has since been replaced with a gold colored magitek implant.

Height: 5’ even, except when she’s wearing heels, which is often.

Build: Rhela is lithe, but muscular. She is stronger than she looks, but has an athletic/fighter build.

Distinguishing Marks: Visibly short/stunted horns and tail. Nose has been broken a few times and is slightly crooked. Burn scars on forearms and hands. Significant visible scarring everywhere else. Perpetually covered in bruises and healing injuries. Tattoo between her shoulder blades - a wolf circled by runes. While the wolf is traditional tattooing, the outer circles and runes appear to have been carved. Closer inspection might reveal the branded Garlean chain that the ink covers up.

Common Accessories: At least one gun, and several knives, concealed on her at any given time. A leather and chain choker and a blue pendant necklace that on closer inspection is a miniature of Etheirys, complete with continents. A ring on her right hand - black metal with a yellow-gold gemstone. Cigarette case and a tin that almost certainly contains drugs.

Profession: Rhela is a mercenary first and foremost. While she has steady employment these days, she still picks up occasional odd jobs. She is a skilled bartender, and has been known to deal in everything from drugs to magical relics on the side.

Hobbies: Hunting is her preferred pastime. She also enjoys making jerky and cured meats from the spoils of her hunts. Rhela is a great lover of both poetry and music, and has a large collection of both. She is also a fighter. Whether it’s a casual spar or a local fight club, she is almost always willing to throw down.

Languages: Eorzean Common. Hingan. Garlean. 

Accent: Rhela’s accent is very unusual, especially in a Xaela. She speaks with hints of Kugane, but the strongest influence is Gyr Abania. For those who would recognize it, there is a bit of provincial Garlean in many of her words and speech patterns.

Dealer — Rhela has ties to a fairly prolific smuggler who operates out of Gyr Abania. Whether you’re looking for magitek, weapons, or artifacts, she might have the connections you seek. She’s also been known to deal in illicit substances, though she does a bit less of that these days.

Imperial Deserter — While Rhela pyr Lupis did not attract much attention during her time with the XIVth legion, someone with ties to the same might recognize her, or at least be aware of the xaelic optio. Officially, she’s classified as missing and presumed dead. Those without direct ties to her former legion might simply recognize a former soldier when they see one.

Wanted — A xaela matching Rhela’s description is wanted for various crimes in multiple Eorzean cities. Sardior is an agendered dragon, a deity of gem dragons, and a fairly detached analytical individual. They have a perfect memory and utilize telepathy to simply memorize all information possessed by those near them, using the new information to extrapolate, reinforce, or disprove currently-held ideas.

Amythest dragons fundamentally desire knowledge, as all gemmatic dragons do, but they seek to learn about anything. They have particular interests in fundamental forces of the multiverse. Be it shared laws of reality, the Uncreated, or unique laws of the Realm they inhabit. They are, in a general sense, highly educated, and though they believe their work to be highly important (whatever that work may be), they are often willing to educate those who wander into their lairs.

Sapphire Dragons

Sapphire dragons are a cautious and aggressive lot. Thinking situations through in seconds before seemingly acting rashly. Their favored subjects are that of war, causing them to be seen on the frontlines of many conflicts in veritable Thunders, often actively participating in the battles themselves for the 'experience'.

Emerald dragons are hidden watchers, they prefer to observe rather than interact or be interacted with. Reclusive by nature, they are rarely 'extroverted'.

Topaz Dragons

Topaz dragons are as salty as their lairs, natural pessimists, quick to become hostile when irritated, and like all salt, hydrophobes. Their fear of water is paradoxical given their ability to vaporize it with their breath and their preference for lair locales.

Crystal dragons are bright in breath, appearance, and personality. Perpetual optimists that are friendly to a fault, and prefer to talk rather than resort to violence.

Beljuril Dragons

Beljuril dragons are much like their namesake gemstones, utterly unpredictable in the long term. In the short term, they can be docile until provoked by something, in which case they can be sporadic. Possibly leaving their lair for a few years, immediately becoming violent, requesting duels, deciding to sleep, becoming a human for a century or two, and other such eccentricities.

Pearl Dragons

Pearl dragons want to know everything, not entirely dissimilar to other gemmatic dragons, but they explicitly want to know everything about you. They want to know how you feel, why you feel that way, what you will do now that you feel that way, what you are currently thinking, why you are thinking that. They do usually identify that asking such questions will eventually result in them receiving the response 'annoyed' followed by some variation of 'because you keep asking me questions.' Naturally, this annoys the dragons, and the diversity of thought ceases for a while.

Obsidian Dragons

Obsidian dragons are second only to amethyst dragons in intelligence. However, unlike amethyst dragons who insatiably feed their thirst for knowledge, obsidian dragons simply know things. This is usually limited to verifiably factual pieces of information, such as how the wind blows, who someone's parents are, what animals are mammals, or the nations of a Realm. They do not know things that are more subjective, such as emotional or religious experiences for example. They view no benefit in sharing what they know nor do they see much benefit in receiving information from their lessers, that is unless it is related to their particular fields of interest.

Agate Dragons

Agate dragons are slow, patient, and deliberate. They speak simply unlike some other dragons, as they prefer to not need to speak, living within their lairs. Though, of the gemmatic dragons, they are the type that will most predictably raid the lands near them, seemingly unprovoked, for the treasures they seek.

Can intuitives that are E6 be more optimistic and naive than other sixes? Being an N means that you have this sort of idealism in you, this hope for a better world or a better future, this optimism that things are going to be fine in the end. So, can an N who is also a 6 oscillate between this optimistic, idealized, naive way of thinking and a more down to Earth, overthinking, pessimistic view upon society and future in general?

Optimistic and idealistic, yes... but not necessarily naive. Naive means a lack of wisdom and that's more of an individual trait than a collective one for a particular type. Wisdom grows with experience for the person willing to learn from their mistakes. Intuitives can do this as 6s if they learn to think productively (what has this taught me, and what will it change for my behavior in the future); they are not doomed to forever be "had" because they are idealistic.

For me, being an intuitive 6w7 is like having a split personality. One of them is grumpy and fearful and suspicious and keeps people at an arm's length as specimens to view with skepticism and distrust; the other is a happy, cheerful "it will all turn out okay" person. But for me, I would say the balance is on realism more than fantastical thinking, because I do have Te in the mix. As an ENFP, I often hope for the best but reserve any kind of judgment out of a desire to "wait and see," unlike the judging 6s I have interacted with online and in person. I am comfortable with a certain amount of uncertainty and okay with allowing things to play out when I can't predict the end -- and unfortunately in some cases, being an intuitive, I am rather good at guessing where something is going (negatively). The struggle is between deciding if this is actual Intuition (an unemotional reading of the situation and predicting what will happen as a result of it) or fearful projection (6 coming up with worst-case scenarios). Which one it is often comes down to whether the facts fit my assumption or not.

For example, a friend's husband is in the hospital right now with a serious infection. Another 6 immediately leapt to the conclusion that he's going to die; I pointed out that he has survived against all odds before, there's no reason to think that THIS TIME his body is going to quit on him in his battle with cancer over the last six years. The facts support this conclusion and indeed, he has started to improve. But in the process of scanning him, they found a growth in his brain similar to the one that killed someone I know two months ago. And this is a case where I know he won't be here long. In the short term, he will be fine; but it's more than likely that he will fade in the next few months. Do I want to be optimistic about it? I do. I chose to be optimistic about his brief hospital stay because I felt supported in it by his survival against odds that would have killed someone else, thus far. But as a 6, I'm also rational and practical when I know what's coming.

As a 6w7, it's like I live my life as a fearful person who is staring into the darkness, but a large part of me wants to avoid those fears through ignoring them and choosing to see the bright side. I am never so 7ny that I am no longer a 6. I feel like a rubber ball bouncing between extremes. But I would say that all 6w7s are like this; you don't have to be an Intuitive to want a better future/life. It's just that intuition + 6 can cause you to worry about different things, and the temptation is always there to abstract away from a fearful situation and start speaking in generalized terms rather than specific ones.

I caught myself doing that this morning -- someone brought up a specific incident to me to talk about and my brain kept floating out and generalizing it as a way to tiptoe around it, cuz I don't exactly know what to say about it. What do I mean? Something like this: "My dog is dying." "Oh, it is so hard to lose a pet, they are so much a part of us, and yet we keep choosing the pain of loss for the temporary pleasure they bring us." It should be, "Oh, I am so sorry. When looking at the timeline and after doing a bit of math…it would be impossible for the man Rosie has taken to calling to Dad as her biological father. Her youth was spent hearing arguments about illicit affairs and breaks in relationships…while simultaneously being reassured that she was still a member of the family, loved by her mother and father and assortment of sisters alike.

Largely, Rosie has never let the issue of her parentage get to her. Full of optimism, she looks at her mother as her mother and her father as her father, and her sisters are precisely that. Her elder sister, Dorothy, was regularly idolized in Rosie’s mind. Her work ethic to get precisely what she wanted - either fame or a boyfriend - Rosie couldn’t help but admire. Paired with Dollie’s supportiveness and Lottie’s ambition…Rosie saw all her favorite traits in her sisters and tried her best to embody them all.

And the best way she has seen to display all her sisters’ best traits is to be entrepreneurial; ever since her early childhood, Rosie has created dozens of business plans and small start ups. From trying to sell cookies to lemonade stands, she has always wanted to have something of her own that she can proudly display to the world. However…her businesses have not always been successful. Her cookies burnt, her lemonade watered down…as she has gotten older and grown an interest in makeup and design, the ingredients she has invested in tend to cause allergic reactions and the fabric has been itchy and uncomfortable. Her naivety has also regularly gotten the best of her - having invested in pyramid schemes without realizing she has been taken advantage of.

If only there were an easy way to the top; Rosie, a hopeless romantic at heart, spent dozens of nights wishing on shooting stars and plucking four leaf clovers for all her dreams to come true. And one day, it seemed as if it would. While working her day job, a quiet woman approached Rosie and promised she could be given anything she ever wanted. Taught to be wary of strangers, Rosie did show hesitation initially - until the woman offered up a contract. Why wouldn’t she trust someone offering something legally binding? Rosie simply had to help the woman feel beautiful, and the woman would, in turn, make Rosie’s entire life beautiful. All too soon did she realize the woman was a witch who had tricked her; an old customer who had tried one of Rosie’s initial beauty products, which had left a horrible rash on her skin for months, she had sought out the girl who she claims had ruined her life. She wanted to make Rosie feel as ugly as she had.

Ever since signing the contract, Rosie has been cursed. By day, she retains her normal appearance. But as soon as the sun falls, her skin turns to scales and her hair mends together and her tongue starts to slither. Every nightfall, she makes a transformation into, what she considers to be, a horrifying snake monster. She still has a copy of the contract she signed herself into, and is convinced some sort of clue within the contract will make her return to normal. But until then, Rosie has a strict curfew and hides away every time the sun begins to set.

1 What’s an important lesson your muse has learned over the past few years and how has that changed the way they live?

Brandy is fucking smooth-brained. He's a dense mother fucker. The densest. He carved open a troll not realizing they're immortal, politely asked to take their organs when he realized he can't kill them, then made several bad attempts to apologize later as if he did something mundane like spill a drink on them instead of attempted murder. And he still believes they're being unreasonable by refusing the apology.

You think a man like that learns lessons? The closest thing to a lesson he's ever learned is that having a life outside of the apartment and real friends to physically interact with after Japhyr essentially kept him locked away his entire childhood and teen years is awesome.

2. How does the time your muse lives in influence their lifestyle? Are they happy they’re born in their time, or do they fantasize about a different era?

He wishes he could have been alive back when being lime was allowed. It annoys him that he has to either hide or lie about his blood color when he leaves The Villa. I wouldn't say he fantasizes about it, but he thinks about it quite a bit.

3. Does your muse focus mainly on one long term goal or multiple short term ones? What do they think about the reachability of their goals and what are they?

He focuses on short-term goals a lot more than anything long-term. Hell, I can't even say he has any long-term goals right now. He doesn't want to join the fleet or have lofty aspirations, he has no intention of living outside of The Villa or leaving either of his jobs, and he has no idea his twin is out there for him to search for because Japhyr let him forget/gaslit him into forgetting. He's happy to just live his life night by night with no big picture to speak of.

His short-term goals are always something really simple and easily reachable: Successfully help host a server-wide event next perigee in the discorpse servers he moderates, save enough money to upgrade his telescopes or buy new ones, plan a special holiday surprise for his matesprit next week. Real quaint goals.

4. Is your muse an optimist or pessimist and how does this influence their choices?

He's an optimist! He chooses to look on the bright side of things and live in whatever way makes him happy, which can cause him to make irresponsible decisions frequently.

5. Does your muse have any irrational fears that hold them back in life? Do they come from experience (trauma) or is it, for instance, part of a belief system they have?

Not really. I mean, we're talking about a guy who grew up in 1) a secret hidden Eldritch Town where 2) cannibalism is entirely normal 3) house mimics puppet troll-like creatures to lure unsuspecting folks inside to be eaten 4) the whispers of The Damned and The Horrorterrors can frequently be heard, and 5) the entire city and surrounding beach and forest have perpetual sinister You're Going To Die Here vibes.

He's a difficult person to scare and doesn't fear much is what I'm saying. He doesn't have any phobias that I can name. He's not even afraid of dying.
