Okay so. We're going through this article step-by-step.
1 - This study is about cars released 2018-2022. This means that it doesn't include the cybertruck (released 2023).
2 - It only accounts for deaths where the people inside of the tested car died. So no mention of causing pedestrians or other motorists to die during crashes.
3 - The average deaths for all cars was 2.8. And is based on "deaths by amount of miles driven" (so a car being more popular as a whole shouldn't affect this data, but "being in more crashes" would).
4 - The "Tesla Model Y SUV" is number 6 on the list of "most dangerous car". And number 3 on the list of SUVs.
(4.5 - BMW is not on the list (of 23 worst cars), which means that if the memes are true to reality, being an asshole-driver isn't a death-sentence.)
5 - Car-size makes a big difference. Small cars are (on average) more dangerous to their occupants than big ones, but big cars will sometimes roll over because of their higher center of gravity.
6 - When averaged out between models, Tesla is the most dangerous brand of car to drive:
7 - It's noted in the article that "distracted driving" is often a big cause of accidents, going on to say that the safest car is one that doesn't crash in the first place.
Personal thoughts:
Teslas are likely to be bought by people who enjoy technology. People who enjoy tech are more likely to be on their phones whilst driving (and to "try out" the autopilot features more regularly), and therefore are more likely to be in crashes.
Having said that, for an SUV to rate that highly? I would assume that it's prone to rolling, which isn't a good look for the safety-tests that supposedly score Teslas so highly.
holy shit
i knew teslas were bad but "literally twice as deadly as the average vehicle" is something else
#i had to go through the links in the linked article to get to the _actual_ article with real information#bcs the original article basically just says: tesla scored badly and is being investigated for their shitty self-driving tech#which is definitely a likely cause. but if you want to know about the actual score you need to follow the links. which is annoying.#media#rants
