i never feel like autistic coded is the right word though bc where gay coded is that the author had in mind that they were writing a gay character but couldn’t make it explicit, usually bc of censorship of some form, the reason we get autistic ‘coded’ characters is mostly because people are writing from reference from real life traits of people they know (or themselves are) without realising they’re describing autistic traits so its not an intentionally coded attempt to portray an autistic person but basically just like...writing an autistic character who hasnt been diagnosed & thats also developed into there being a stock ‘autistic coded’ character stereotype that people are referencing instead of from life, which is where you get the stupid and flat ones, but theres also a lot of characters who wouldn’t be flagged up as a stereotypical ‘autistic coded’ character at all, but are just blatantly displaying autistic traits to the point that i feel comfortable just referring to them as an autistic character because never having been diagnosed or not knowing you’re autistic doesnt make you not autistic so like if it walks like an autistic person and talks like an autistic person...
#like sherlock holmes was originally based on life#but now lots of people are just like. hey what if i had an isolated logical genius too#and so both sherlock himself + the sherlock-shaped characters get continually flattened#bc while he was written from life sheldon cooper was written about 4 characters removed from life#and went through significant flanderisation in that time#and it becomes kind of a cycle#and at some point people connected those characters to autism so now instead of idk being inspired by irl autistic people around you#ppl just. write that character again#anyway i hope this makes sense its just like#most of the best autistic characters are just because the author was autistic & didnt realise and just thought they were writing a relatable#character#whereas a lot of deliberate attempts to make either an explicitly autistic or an Autistic Coded character#are BAD bc theyre writing from stereotypes and tropes and assumptions and webmd rather than just looking around them#for the like allmost inevitable autistic person in their life and being inspired by that
