gray's anatomy s3 trans episode. impressively bad. i know they always have to do the morality play thing and make one character arbitrarily decide they disagree with the other's decision, but jeez, it's hard in this one. idk if i'll ever be able to wrap my head around the 'trans widow' thing, much less sympathize with it. i mean, when your partner is making a major and permanent change in their life, if you're not okay with it you don't stay with them and rally against it and make both of you miserable, you cut your losses and move on. i know it happens but it is so frustrating to see it on a tv show played as if the cis wife here is totally in the right for making her trans wife fucking miserable at her own expense. like you don't own her, she doesn't owe you her misery in order for you to keep having your male partner. also the medical information in this one is straight up wrong lol yeah if you have breast cancer feminizing HRT can be too dangerous to be recommended but you don't have to detransition entirely you can still get various kinds of SRS and it'd obviously make this woman happier than detransitioning. stopping HRT doesn't make your breasts 'deflate' although it can slightly change the tissue composition over time. and estrogen therapy increases your risk of breast cancer but it doesn't GIVE you cancer automatically, i don't like how they framed that considering how common the HRT=immediate turbo cancer myth is. they are really just very flippant with the patient in this episode frankly if this was me i'd kill myself in front of sloane.

dunno how bad this is for the time - it's obviously making a mockery of the concept of SRS and the misgendering is constant but it at least doesn't frame the trans woman in the episode as inherently hideous or worthy of mockery imo. but all in all, spectacularly hard to watch. maybe not quite as painful as the insanely hypocritical skinny girl gastric bypass episode in that the dumbass message the show is trying to push is at least outright.
