Ok so “Let the Eat cake” or “Qu'ils mangent de la brioche”
According to Rousseau it was a line said by a great princess (of France of course) who when she learned the story that the peasants were starving, she said that. Now!! This line was attributed to Marie but when Rousseau wrote it down he hadn’t even known Marie, she was 14 @ the time and still in Austria, not coming until the following year.
In fact if the line is ACTUALLY real it was prolly one of the Mesdames who said it specifically Sophie or Victorie.
Now, regardless the quote is contrary to Marie’s actual personality. Yes she lived in a life of lavish, but she also gave all of her money anytime she could. She instilled charitable ideals in her children, started a school for unwed women, paid for the education of orphans and the likes. She even gave all of Marie Therese’s Christmas/New Years money to help the efforts. Unlike how its written down Marie 1 didn’t spend more than her successors or many of the members of her family, nor 2 did she cause the revolution bc her spending habits.
For that first point Marie Les (the former queen) and Du Barry (the mistress of the former king) BOTH spent wayyyyyy more money than Marie yearly. Du Barry went bankrupt EVERY YEAR, despite being allotted a huge wallet. Even while Marie was queen her brother in law Little Louis spent WAY more in fashion that her. He bought a new shoe everyday and threw it out when he was done.
For the second point the revolution was inevitable. France was going thro economic depression and a climate depression. Even if Louis was the best king it still would have all fell down, Louis the dick 15th and my beloved Louis the sun king, drained the economy. They left Louis the 16th with an empty treasury and no idea how to rule. Marie was blamed for it simply bc there were no other women to blame as the king had no mistress, but a lot of this blame is hella misguided and added on.
Thats my piece on the Let them Eat Cake.
