#bc that's not really how literary analysis works oops

I know this can be contentious (and even just mentioning this kind of analysis as a serious one makes a lot of people who don't understand what literary analysis is very angry) but I actually think it's pretty cool that people can draw both transfeminine and transmasculine reads of Jesse from hit TV show Jesse out of the text of the show. Something something shared experiences something something solidarity. You get the idea
#i've done the Analysis(tm) i'm smart i know how to read. i think a trans read goes 'in all directions' as they say#idk i Barely participate in any discussion abt the show on here bc i haven't finished it yet#but just like most instances of interpretive lgbt analysis i think neither is the more objectively 'correct read'#bc that's not really how literary analysis works oops#open mick night#breaking bad#jesse pinkman#i could also post at length abt how transgender reads of 'prestige television' or 'classic literature'#are disregarded and treated as like 'stupid online teenager fandom nonsense'#but like it's a genuine analytical lens that can be applied to characters and stories even if 'that's not what the author intended'#but i don't wanna talk abt that rn. i wanna talk abt achy breaky bad and i've expounded most of my funny thoughts#so i'm testing out smart ones#don't worry i think abt other characters TOO. i'll get to it i wanna space em out

this is absolutely random but I got caught up on your tag saying "I'm way too good at reading things that maybe aren't there" and listen. I don't know what you study (I remember you mentioning you take creative writing classes so??? sorry if you literally know this just trying to encourage you) but I study literature and in literary theory there's a lot of discussions about whether what the author wanted/meant/intended actually matters in interpretation and understanding literary works and well, a lot of theorists actually agree it doesn't so if you say it's there it's probably there, no matter if intentionally by the author, so ig please keep going off unapologetically we love to hear it
(also just in general, your analysis of the number three pretty much resonates a lot with Jacques Derrida's formal idea of deconstruction (basically tearing texts apart to the minute detail, and collecting and inter-connecting these details/words with associations of the reader to form a structure of meaning and it's all very abstract (a pain to learn during studies but cool to see in action!) so I just had to think about that)) yeah that's it have a great day
ahhh this is my first ever ask so thank u anon <333
and yeah, i did a joint honours english and creative writing degree (graduating in three weeks :/) and there were literary theory modules each year that were compulsory for single honours english students BUT because i was also in creative writing, i couldnât actually take them bc they ran at the same time as my cw classes soooo all this to say that even tho i did study literature i wasnât really able to study that much literary theory - tho of course theory is relevant in all lit modules but i didnât take a class specifically for that. (i wanted to, cause i love that shit, but i wasnât allowed) ((annoyingly in first year there was a module that covered not only advanced lit theory but also academic writing that i wasnât able to take so i never learned how to write university essays? like thatâs not inconvenient at all))
that being said, iâm of course familiar with the concept of intention vs interpretation mainly through barthesâ death of the author theory (and it comes up a lot in cw classes because in workshops people share every thought they have about your work and ur not allowed to defend urself!! cause ur intention doesnât matter if someone interprets what you wrote a certain way!!!) and the thing is i get it, i do - and i love to analyse whatever i can, i tear things to shreds with no mind for intent - but i also know people outside of literary studies love to say shit just isnât that deep.
im always watching and rewatching shows with one or two of my sisters and one of them especially makes fun of me a lot for analysing everything from the dialogue to delivery to lighting and staging and camera work because she thinks i get way too into it. she either stares at me blankly or tells me to shut up (which happens a lot itâs very annoying let me talk ffs) so i guess i mainly added that in the tags to ensure everyone knows that i know that i analyse a lot so hopefully no one feels the need to tell me?? i donât know, i just get slightly self conscious about analysing things when i know i could be saying something slightly unhinged lmao.
but, i will of course, keep going off on here about aftg bc thatâs what im here for lol (i got sad about not being able to share my thoughts anywhere)
oops forgot to say THANK YOU for reassuring me about my jean number 3 analysis iâm always thinking someoneâs gonna say wtf r u on about mate đđ
#i would love to be unapologetic about it but i am aware that i am annoying#that never stops me tho dw#am i supposed to tag this with a thing#odetojupiter answers#idk i see ppl do that seems fun#if ppl wanna send me asks thatâd be cool

Rules: Answer 11 Questions and Make Up 11 of Your own
Tagged by @dogbearinggiftsâ and @odd-cinderellaâ (so I have 22 to answer... hoo........)
1. Name something that makes you as giddy as fireworks make Ernesto de la Cruz.
talkin bout the death positivity movement yeah boyyyyyyyyy
2. Do you have any pet peeve tropes (story beats or patterns you see that make you roll your eyes at best)? If so, what?
Oh yeah, but Iâm better at pointing out specific instances--I donât have a list off the top of my head. Miscommunication tropes are probably the worst offenders if theyâre done poorly. (not always tho. @ryouverua does them great.)
3. Talent you donât have but wish you did?
currently? PLAYING GUITAR GHGHGH. or even just having an ear for music.Â
4. If you had to get one set of song lyrics as a tattoo, what lyrics would you get?
off the top of my head, iâm thinking something from bon joviâs everybodyâs broken. because iâm a sap. otherwise, maybe a fandom song--hamilton or something wh oops
5. Your boss tells you to dress for the job you want. You take this literally and come to work dressed as a job that might not exist, but that you would love to have. What are you wearing?
Since I hate uniforms/dress codes, Iâd probably just wear whatever I want, because my ideal job wouldnât require any uniform hahah. Maybe a nice dress.
6. What is one food that you feel you SHOULD like, but that you donât?
Spicy stuff.
7. Favorite villain?
Dr. Horrible? haha
8. You have been selected to teach a college-level course. This course can be on absolutely anything and you write your own curriculum. What are you teaching?
For what Iâd feel qualified to blather on about? Probably an intro to literary analysis sort of thing. Or the history of coffee.Â
9. Least favorite hero?
Geez, I dunnooo. Maybe Kaiba. Heâs an antihero but w/e
10. If you could cook one dish perfectly every time, what would it be?
I never cook! Maybe bread. Because my family has a matrilineal curse on it that none of us can ever make bread, and Iâd like to break the chain.Â
11. Favorite Disney song of all time?
Ffffffffffffffffffffff Iâm.................. going with âYouâre Welcomeâ
-
1. What is your advice for self-confidence?
Remember that people with much fewer qualifications than you have almost definitely tried what youâre doing and succeeded. Also, the stakes are probably much lower than you think they are. Partial credit is better than no credit.
2. What music do you listen to when you write?
I have to have absolute silence when I write. Music is too distracting!Â
3. What other fandoms do you enjoy?
Over the Garden Wall is my other big one.
4. How would you save someone from self-harm?
You canât usually âsaveâ someone from something like that. (I mean, in my old job I was trained on restraint techniques for this reason, but besides that...) You have to be able to take a step back, encourage and help them and try to keep them as save as possible, give them resources if theyâre willing to listen, and let them make their own choices. Itâs hard and it doesnât feel right but you canât force someone to take care of themselves either. Sometimes you need to be able to call someone professional if they need help.
5. Do you have any pets?
I have a lovely cat named Bastet!
6. What is your Lifeâs Theme Song?
Ah heck all these song questions. I really donât know! Iâm sorry!
7. Texting or talking on the phone?
Texting for exchanging info. Talking for chatting, bc Iâm terrible at typing on a touchscreen keyboard.
8. What attracted you to your fandom?
I watched it and couldnât stop thinking about it ever.
9. Do you believe in love at first sight?
yes im certain that it happens all the time
Attraction at first sight, yes!Â
10. List your Top 5 favorite songs
aaaaaaaa
idekÂ
hereâs 5 that i like tho:
barricade
cucurrucucĂș paloma
hey ho (on the devilâs back)
sincerely, me
