DAY 1 - 6

(Thu, 19 Sept - Tue, 24 Sept)

After a long day of travelling (14 hours!!!), I finally made it to Vancouver at 09:45 pm - yay, 15 minutes early! I had a layover in Calgary so I already did Immigration there which was actually quite nice. I’ve been stressing out about actually getting my visa approved basically for the whole flight to Calgary and long before that but in the end, everything went down smoothly. Of course - in hindsight, I don’t know what bad thing should have happened. The time my flight got in probably played a big role in me getting through Immigration quickly. I was with the Border Control Officer for maybe 15 minutes if at all and he didn’t even want to see any proof of insurance or anything, just my POE Letter.

So after that, it was so much more stress-free to take the 1 and a half hour flight to Vancouver. And since it was a domestic flight and I was through Immigration already, I could just go to pick up my luggage. And I finally saw my boyfriend again. God, that was the best sight ever after such a long time. We were separated by a wall that we technically could have crossed but officially weren’t allowed to until I had my luggage and got out of that area. But we got to hug already and hold hands and I just really fucking missed him.

It’s really crazy how every time we’re reunited, it feels like no time has passed at all even though the actual time we were apart when we were going through it felt so horribly long. But now that we were reunited again, it felt just like it had to be exactly that way. After six months, it was so so good to be able to hug him and kiss him again, and to see all the changes that are a lot more apparent when I’m not looking at him through a screen. Of course, as promised, we headed to A&W immediately so I could have my beloved Beyond Meat Burger again (it was as good as I remembered!) Then we headed back to his place, I got to see and pet his cat again (damn, I missed that fluff ball so much) and after lots of cuddling, we went to bed.

Now, I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t start my year abroad with a bang. Literally. My boyfriend had to go to uni so I accompanied him and as we were heading up the escalators at the train station, I somehow tripped (don’t ask me how, I’m still trying to figure it out myself) and fell. Fucking hell, I don’t think my knees have ever hurt this much. My boyfriend was laughing of course - he also did when I fell down the stairs in Oslo lmao - and I was too but mainly so I wasn’t crying instead. It really fucking hurt and I quickly realised I couldn’t really move my right leg properly. Unfortunately, it took a little while until I got an ice pack for my knee and by that time my legs were already black and blue all over - spoiler alert: it just got worse in the following days but at least I could move normally again the next day. So basically, I spent my first full day in Canada in agony. Honestly, I’m not too surprised.

I actually have to fight quite a bit with jetlag. I’m awake pretty early and then could fall asleep (and did fall asleep) at around 6 or 7 pm. Hopefully, that will be over soon.

Saturday, my boyfriend and I didn’t really do much. We mostly just hung out at home before we went to ICBC Driver Licensing in the afternoon to inquire about how I could get a BC licence. Turns out that was pretty easy luckily - honestly, I’ll probably have more troubles getting my German one back when I return. And we also went to A&W again! (Am I obsessed? Most definitely.)

And then Sunday was the day I finally met my host family. It was actually so nice to pack my bags at my boyfriend’s place but not feel sad because I was leaving indefinitely. Living just about half an hour away from each other is honestly the best thing ever. My boyfriend dropped me off at my new home - my host mum made a comment about how he could have helped me with the suitcases and how there were no gentlemen left these days, it was hilarious tbh. So I met my host mum and the family dog (little cutie!!) first while my host kid was still napping. I immediately felt welcome in the family, sitting down to chat a bit with my host mum while the kid was slowly waking up. He was a bit shy with me at first and putting on quite the show which quickly escalated and got a bit too much for everyone involved. I then had some time to unpack while my host mum rested and that was also when my host kid slowly warmed up to me and started talking to me. He helped me with unpacking (even though I later had to rearrange my drawers lmao because he does not know how to put clothes into drawers efficiently). For dinner, we went to a place I thought was quite fancy but very nice. Awesome view of the mountains and river - which, I was told, would have been even better if the weather had been nice. I also met a woman who is much like a grandma to my host kid and she was also very friendly and made me feel welcome. Even though at that point I was so exhausted from all the new impressions and travelling still that socialising was a bit much for me.

Monday was my first official day of work. But it started out easy enough. I came to pre school with my host mum and kid so I could be introduced to the teachers and see where the school was and everything and after that my host mum and I ran some errands. Most importantly, actually getting my German drivers licence exchanged for a BC one. After that we did some grocery shopping and then it was already time again to pick up my host child. When we returned home, he and I had some time alone together because the mother had an appointment. Naturally, I had a crying child on my hands right on my first day. At least, it wasn’t my fault. He got a little too excited playing that he hit himself in the back with a hard object. Interestingly enough, I felt less overwhelmed with the situation than when I had a crying child on my first day during my first aupair experience. Of course, I’m six years older now and back then, I had my two host children plus two of their friends on the first day. It’s much more easy going this time around - in all aspects. Besides that little incident, the first day went pretty good and I was just really exhausted by the end of it.

Today (Tuesday), my host kid and I spent even more time alone together. In the morning, we took a short trip to the park and when we returned back home, we were playing for a bit before I made lunch for him and then tried to get him to take a nap. It was quite the challenge! I think it took about an hour until he settled down enough to even attempt to fall asleep. But he eventually did. It was a little weird for me to have a sleeping child on the couch while I had no idea what to do because I was scared if I made the tiniest movement or noise, he’d wake up. Which of course wasn’t the case and I could easily just leave the room. Well, he’s not the only one who needs some getting used to to the new situation. But I think we’ll both handle it very well. My host mum bought a new car today since the old one that I was supposed to drive died shortly before I arrived. I haven’t driven the car yet (and I’m a little, let’s say intimidated by the prospect of doing so) but it’s a cool car and not too big so I should be okay. We’ll see how that goes tomorrow.

So long story short, it was my first time being pulled over, I took the seatbelts off, and I ran the red light because there was a guy pulling into a parking stop right in front of me and I was too worried looking around afraid I was going to hit a jaywalking tourists. I know this is long but please bear with me. Rather than set up a separate government run medical insurance or expansion of medicare to the general public....One criticism of government care is that it will be in direct competition with existing providers. Ultimately siphoning insurance customers away from traditional plans and onto the rolls of govt care causing these providers to go out of business. Here in my state the auto insurance companies MUST offer the same basic minimum coverage in order to do business in the state. Everyone here must have at least the same basic level of insurance (both auto and medical) . You can go to any provider you choose and this basic minimum insurance level costs the same . If you want more insurance you can pay for additional coverage. But that basic plan is available to all. So why not have a similar program for medical insurance as part of a nation wide group policy. This group can be subsidized by the government but it would be managed by the existing insurance providers. (In other words if you want to be in the insurance business you must offer and support this minimum plan which would be a foundation for any other plan you offer) The govt pays the insurance company a flat rate to manage each person enrolled in the basic plan. The more money the company saves (the better they manage the insurance) the more money they keep. However if that company provides poor management it will cost them. Either subscribers will change management companies if they feel they are getting a raw deal or wasteful management would not be payed for by the government. One advantage I see here is that consumers would have an alternative providers to go to if they feel wronged by a particular management company. Insurance providers also have an incentive to offer additional services to the basic plan members in order to attract more subscribers and earn money. With a govt program like medicare your stuck with the one provider (the governement). As they say One Choice is NO Choice.... If someone wants additional insurance they can buy additional coverage from any provider they choose. But No one could be denied coverage for the standardized basic plan. Since everyone is part of this national group policy the basic insurance is portable and independent of supplemental policy one may have. So if you change jobs or move to a different state you may loose the supplemental policy BUT your basic coverage remains intact. You merely transfer the company that provides the management services for the basic medical. Insurance providers would get paid by the fed to manage the participants in the basic plan for each participant in the basic plan. this would put market forces into play for the insurance providers to make money by attracting additional participants through better service or offerings. COunter to this is if the consumer gets crappy management services they can transfer to any other insurance provider.

I'm an older full-time college student and my husband works full-time at Walmart. In the past three years, I've been through 4 cancer related surgeries, which were paid for by the breast/cervical cancer Medicaid program. Unfortunately, follow up care and monitoring aren't covered and I was dropped from Medicaid. I'm now on my husband's health insurance, which is basically worthless because our income is under $20,000/yr and the policy has a $4500 deductible plus 20% after. I haven't seen my oncologist for over a year because we can't afford the expensive scans, biopsies, and lab work associated with cancer follow-up with a deductible that high. I thought my situation would change in 2014 with Obamacare. I recently learned from the healthcare.gov website calculator that our income is low enough to qualify for expanded Medicaid (which our state decided not to expand), but I don't qualify for the health insurance subsidies I desperately need because the outrageous deductible health insurance from my husband's job covers spouses. How can a couple with an income so low they would qualify for expanded Medicaid be ineligible for subsidies? I am completely devastated over this and I don't know what to do. Not being able to afford cancer follow up care is putting my life in danger. Even if my husband's employer (Walmart) quit covering the spouses of full-time employees, I think that would only apply to new hires because of the grandfather clause. If getting subsidies was based on income alone the way it should be instead of access to employer provided coverage, I would qualify for a zero deductible policy and $3 co-pays with a monthly premium of around $60. I could then afford the expensive health care I need. We live in a college town so if my husband got a different job, he'd make even less than he does now and we would probably end up homeless. If my husband transfers and we move to a state that's expanding Medicaid, I'll have to quit school and get rid of my German Shepherd and Siberian Husky since it's almost impossible to find a landlord that allows them. What does it take to truly experience another country?

I remember, several years ago, going through the ordeal of opening a bank account in France. The waiting lines and the bureaucracy, the backs and forths between providing this paperwork, and actually, no, providing that paperwork, which had to be redone because xyz isn’t happy with abc and I was going 123 crazy. About four weeks later, I had a bank account in which my legit French employer could deposit a paycheck, that it turns out was cut in half for taxes and incentives that the famous French bureaucracy had forgot to mention to me. (I may be exaggerating… barely.)

All this to say, it seems like you never really know a place until you’re truly trying to get in. Poking and prodding at a country’s stranger barrier until you can find the crevice to sneak in your foreign self.

I mean, sure, at the end of the day, I knew I was a stranger in France. My accent was different, my cultural references were different, my habits and the food I ate was different. It was clear. But after many similar experiences, I knew France. I felt her in my bones. I felt her push me away when I tried to join her inner circle and I also felt her open her arms when she boasted about her pride possessions and accomplishments. I understood her, then. Why she was the way she was, and where she was going with her decisions. She made me suffer, but she was home.

France will forever be more than a postcard to me.

America, on the other hand, was never a place I was looking to collect postcards from.

Like many, I walked into, sorry, drove into America with a dream in my head and an invisible shield around my being. “I’m canadian” has been my proud slogan for the last four months. “I’m not like these people.” Hell, I want everyone to know: “back home, healthcare is free! Back home, people are nice! Back home, we don’t get nuclear threats!” etc.

Oh, and by the way, my experienced French palette is way too good for the food here.

I’m just here for the ride. Don’t expect me to stay too long. By that, I mean, I’m here to pursue my silly dream, and retire back to a chill Canadian life.

But it’s not that simple, is it?

Having my car break down in the middle of the California desert was my American version of the French bank account. Except ten times worse.

Remember the whole poking and prodding and feeling the poetic curves of that sexy french lady? Well, now she’s an overweight bald guy name Harold who is borderline phobic of showers. Does mold grow on human flesh? Is that a thing?

So here I am, America, alone, in the middle of the desert, smoke coming out of my hood, 100 miles away from Los Angeles, 3 hours behind everyone sleeping at home & 1 border away from the place where I’m still considered a whole person.

Fuck.

Tears start pouring out of my eyes, blood starts pouring out of my Fun Tunnel and it’s New years day. If that’s not poetic, I don’t know what is.

I wish I could say I was strong and picked myself up and dealt with all this like an adult and stuck it to the fat old man, but I didn’t. I wept. I just, wept.

I’d gambled everything on America. More importantly, I’d gambled a lot on that car. A used SUV but still, a big SUV, only four months in, that could have (should have) lasted several more years.

This meant the careful planning, the saving, the non-urgency of finding a source of income, the taking my time to settle in was all gone. No more invisible barrier around this canadian elitist.

I held my breath and stifled my tears, called a local friend for comfort, and before I knew it, I was taken care of. My car was towed to West Hollywood and I was greeted with vegan takeout. Thank God for Americans.

The car is repairable, but at an unthinkable cost. And again, a gamble. Shipping it back to MTL costs just as much with thrice the time.

My mechanic is frank with me: my best option is to sell it for parts and use the repair money as a down payment on a new car. He’ll keep it in storage for me while I figure all of that out. Fair enough. Again, thank God for Americans.

This is where the magical land of pursuing my dream suddenly turned into the nightmare of getting in line for a place in this country.

As I try not to choke on the financial loss of my prematurely departed Toyota, (64k miles! Seriously!?) I poke and I prod at all the obstacles standing in the way of me and my new car.

First it’s the dealerships. You know, the oh-so-enjoyable car shopping experience. Magnified by money-hungry America.

Good news, they’ll take my broken car as a down payment.

Then, it’s the leasing department. How do you lease a car to someone who has no credit history? “But I do have credit history. 8 years of it! And it’s mint!” - “Not in America you don’t!”

- Fun fact: you’re not a person if you don’t have credit in this country. But we knew that, right? -

Oh wait! They can’t take my SUV as a down payment anymore. It needs to be registered in California to be sold to anyone. Shit.

Back to the leasing department: So now that you have these absurd, bad-credit based, monthly payments, we need a proof of income to accept your lease!

Wait… you mean income I can’t legally have as a student in this country? And at least three months of it? Uh...

After over an hour phone wait with the DMV: “My SUV needs to pass an inspection? And a Smog test?” - “Yes, and go through US customs” - In other words, I have to drive my undriveable car to pass tests it will never pass, to sell it at a fraction of the price I got it for. Nice.

Meanwhile, I walk out of the Honda dealership with a brand new Civic. If you’re wondering how, let’s just say, thank God for Americans?

I try AAA, as they are typically more helpful when it comes to registering cars. Oh, wait, they don’t do foreign cars? Of course not. Waiting hours at the DMV it will be, then!

At this point, I’m 30 minutes on hold with British Columbia to see what their process for selling out of province cars is. Will they take my old Frog?

Oh, cool! I can get insurance quotes for my new car online! Wait a minute, why is it TRIPLE the amount of the overpriced insurance I was paying back home!? Oh, because I need an American driver’s license? Oh God… not this. Not now.

Are we annoyed yet?

We’re three weeks in and my SUV, is accumulating tickets on a street in Weho. I guess that’s what happens when your mechanic has too many cars to fix.

I get a call from another local friend here; he says he has a solution for me... You know, a “solution.” So, if in a few days, we find out my SUV has been conveniently taken care of, we can thank God for Mexicans.

Meanwhile, after making an appointment with the DMV for a driver’s license, I show up only to find out I don’t have the right paperwork with me. Lovely. I have the option to come back later and wait in the line that stretches outside the building onto the sidewalk. (It’s only 9am at this point...) No thanks.

I’m not out of hope yet. I tow my SUV to another mechanic; he’s quoted me less and he’s been more helpful so far. Looks like I’m off to BC in a couple months.

As I look into the rearview mirror of my new ride, I see my perma-sunkissed skin and my light, sun-died hair. I feel the ocean wind blowing through my moon roof, my writing notebook keeping me company in the passenger seat. I see the HBO billboards as I head down Sunset to one of my favourite vegan cafés. (guess my French palette isn’t so dissatisfied after all)

I feel that dream, alive as ever, in my heart, pounding.

I see people, everyone, buzzing with ideas and passion and fighting, just like me, for a place here, for their right to live.

Slowly but surely, my stranger barrier comes down.

It’s crazy, but I’m exactly where I wanted to be. I’m home now.

America, you got me.
