To illustrate just a small point about the constantly ongoing "discussion" from the wider fandom,
I'm working on unit with teens in need of mental health stabilization and also greater community and resource/supports.
Wanna know what almost all of them have in common?
Trauma history
Difficulties with emotion regulation (bc of trauma)
Trust issues (trauma)
Reactivity/Aggression/Anger/Yelling/Throwing things (trauma)
Estrangement/Upheaval/Disconnection from their family or sometimes no family (again trauma)
Hypersexuality/inappropriate conversations or topics (trauma)
Self harm of varying kinds and risk of ending their lives
Like... Yeah there are most definitely children, adolescents, and teenagers like Billy in real life and this is what we've been telling you. Pay attention.

I feel like there’s this real problem online and even sometimes in irl spaces where like...... bc people are used to being in spaces where certain misogynist/homophobic/transphobic/racist/etc ideas aren’t common or are like, pretty universally understood as wrong people forget that in wider society they’re still an issue
like I think this is the problem with the q slur a lot of the time- for lgbt ppl who use it, a lot of them don’t live in an area where it’s actively used or have otherwise just been involved in their local lgbt community for so long that they’re detached from those of us who have been traumatized by it or hear it used only as a slur.
which is probably why a lot of ppl who are 25+ are so....... detached from the lives of teenagers and younger adults. since they’ve been in a positive, accepting community for a while, they’ve forgotten that many of us uh are still dealing with just the basic stuff and trying to get past it.
and I’m not saying there aren’t ppl over 25 who aren’t still struggling to find community, obviously there are, but yknow. same with for example, teenagers who were raised in a liberal family and went to more liberal schools. in my experience a lot of them just have this major disconnect in what it’s like for those of us in conservative families
for example, a lot of people I meet in my relatively liberal town are in shock that I was raised by creationists and that creationism is still alive and well. bc they Assumed that was long dead bc..... they personally managed to avoid it???? same with if I mention any negative aspect of xtianity. people who have had positive experiences with xtianity are in Shock and deny that this stuff happens often
and I think overall it can be applied to a lot of stuff. ppl have a hard time remembering that just bc they personally live in a community that has dealt with certain things or moved past something, that doesn’t mean others have as well
