controversial take but I truly think that if you are using indigenous status in the i/p debate, you need to be able to look at the officially recognized definition for indigeneity and explain how x fit that
#funny enough its really easy to prove jews as native to the levant#palestinians not so much#but! does that mean they don't have a right to life and dignity? no of course not#but words mean things#living somewhere for a while does not make you indigenous and indigenous status does not just expire because 'well its been a long time'#throwing myself to the wolves with this one#being indigenous to a region also does not suggest moral superiority and purity but what do i know#+ at a point it doesnt matter who is indigenous bc everyone should have basic human rights#like genuinely if you pull up the recognized definition from the UN and are struggling or reaching to fit a group into something then maybe#perhaps they arent native#again reiterating: not being indigenous does not mean we should just blow them up on the spot#antisemitism#arab colonialism#i/p

I can't properly put into words the amount of disgust that I feel seeing someone who looks like she could be my cousin fight for a genocidal occupational force like Israel but I will say this.
If you are Chinese, Korean, Japanese or any one of these Asian ethnicities that the West deem "acceptable" and you align yourselves with western-backed racial supremacy, you are making fools of yourselves. You have fallen prey to the myth of the "model minority" and you are suckers for it.
The premise of racial supremacy is based on exclusivity. And here's a dose of reality - the myth of the "model minority" is nothing but a tactic to placate you. To sow divide in the ranks of people of colour. To artificially manufacture another realm of racial supremacy in minorities so that you're distracted from how we all suffer under colonialism.
Did we all forget about the skyrocketing of sinophobia in the wake of the first COVID outbreak? The transformation of Chinese people into fiends with barbaric eating customs, poor hygiene, and mass conspiracy to infect the world with biological weapons?

link
What about the hate-crimes? The attacks in the street against anyone visibly asian? The rampant discrimination and ostracisation from society?

In 2020, Donald Trump referred to COVID-19 as "The Chinese Virus", "Kung-flu" at a campaign rally to raucous applause, a chilling echo of the times where fears of the "Yellow Peril" had the western world in a stranglehold.

For all that Chinese people have been lauded as "prodigies" and "well-mannered workers", the moment our existence was incovenient, were were nothing more than another target. And although Chinese suffering then wasn't close to the scale of suffering that Palestinians now endure, we all received a reminder on what it was like to be in the world's crosshairs.
Now, in 2023, Biden dismisses death tolls as unreliable and remains proudly Zionist even after Netanyahu described the genocide Israel is inflicting upon Palestine as the "struggle between the children of light and the children of darkness, between humanity and the law of the jungle." At the same time, Palestinians are being compared to fleeing rats in a gesture of dehumanisation that mirrors how the Nazis portrayed Jews during the Holocaust.

link
And let's not think Abigail's Jewishness will save her, not when it's been proven that Israel has administered contraceptives to Ethiopian Jewish immigrants without their consent. Racial supremacy is an exclusive club that never stops getting smaller, and there is nothing that you, as a minority, will ever be able to do to fit in. One day, you too will be a target and there'll be nothing you can do but blame yourself. After all - it's already happened.
So shame on Abigail. Truly. With the memory of knowing what it's like to be targeted for factors out of your control fresh in her mind, she happily fights to do the same to others. And that says more about her than I ever will be able to.
#this may be long winded and wordy but i had to get this off my chest#as a chinese-australian woman who does her best to be proud of her chinese heritage#this was a slap in the face#and ive tried lately to not inject my own voice into discussion about palestine bc i know there are people out there#who are more educated and more equipped with voices that need elevating more than mine do#but i think im allowed to talk about how enraged this made me#god.#free palestine#palestine#cw: mentions of sinophobia#colonialism

Hellenistic burial necklace with butterfly pendant, symbolizing the soul. Gold, amethyst, chalcedony, emerald, rock crystal, pearl, and colored glass Late 1st-2nd century BC
It was found in 1891 in a tomb near (Pontic) Olbia, an important Greek colony on the Black Sea coast of modern Ukraine (west of the Chersonese). The piece dates to the Hellenistic period, 2nd-1st century BC (i.e., ca. 200-101 BC).

also maybe this is just a vestige from getting really into the expanse at one point but I wish we knew a bit more about the human colonies outside of earth and what they were like.
I think it's kind of implied that b5 itself is actually one of the biggest? and I'm kind of intrigued by the idea that there are a lot of colonies that are like the scifi equivalent of really small towns. like what is it actually like to live/grow up there!! and like are they on planets with livable atmospheres or or is it like mars where everything is indoors? I kind of assume the latter but we really don't know
and we get a bit about mars but its mostly the political situation (though that itself is left pretty vague and I wish we had gotten more details on that too) and I really would like to know more about like the infrastructure and what day to day operation is actually like
but unlike in the expanse nearly all the prominent human characters are from earth iirc sinclair and marcus are the only ones who confirmedly aren't. and Sinclair is from mars but we don't hear anything about his experience growing up/living there. and we learn like nothing about the place marcus is from except that its 'a mining colony'. I would like to know more!!
#Babylon 5#b5#so many aliens in this show and I'm here thinking about the humans in space. maybe I am expansepilled#I have a disease where I want to know the details of like infrastructure and administration/bureaucracy in a setting#tell me more about the space equivalent of a mining town in the middle of nowhere (which is what I'm assuming a mining colony is)!!#while I'm here I also wish we got more details about what running b5 was like post-earth-secession bc that must've been crazy admin-wise#actually the idea that marcus is like. the sci-fi equivalent of guy who never left the really small town he grew up in is kind of funny#I can't even articulate why its just vibes#if I knew more about small town life I could probably extrapolate something meaningful about his character from that but alas

Colonialism Apologetics? In MY Space Mecha Kids TV Show? MORE LIKELY THAN U THINK
I will soon #discuss this but for now I'm just pissed off by it like really TV show? REALLY?
Wait also this is totally unrelated but I am still thinking about the Voltron Show episode where like I really do think they could've stumbled upon something interesting about 1: the fact that the Paladins suddenly become these like. Objects. Symbolically speaking. And then to the resistance movement there is a tension because they're not actually like. Doing shit. But then the paladins themselves feel objectified
Idk like there's so many things that you could do there that would be pretty doable to handle for the audience and keeping the tone of the show! Have Shiro feel uncomfortable with the Shiro The Hero [TM] persona because it reminds him too much of the Champion!
Have the rebels like in the Blade of Marmalade or Olkarion or other rebel outposts (which we barely even see because the show dgaf about the people fighting for freedom jfc) feeling some kinda way about it! A FUCKING MARVEL MOVIE DID THIS!!!! THAT'S HOW SIMPLE THIS IS TO DO!!! (I watched the first Captain America movie for the first time last night. It is extremely simple and very pro military. BUT IT UNDERSTANDS HOW TO DO WHAT IT NEEDS TO DO)
Like idk have Loverboy Lance be tied to Lance's own insecurities about what he brings to the team AND the war– have him feel some kind of way about being portrayed like that as MORE than just jokes!
Don't even get me started on Hunk this fucking show is so awful to Hunk
HAVE ALLURA REALLY GET TO GRIPS WITH THE FACT THAT SHE'S GOT TO PLAY A GUY WHO SHE IS BOTH VERY SIMILAR TO AND ALSO HE IS PART-GALRA, THE SAME GALRA WHO KILLED HER PEOPLE! IT'S A REASONABLE HESITANCY TO HAVE! IDK! IT JUST PISSES ME OFF MAN THERE'S SO MANY THINGS THIS SHOW COULD DO BUT DOESN'T
#voltron#liveblogging voltron#voltron legendary defender#liveblogging#vld#princess allura#allura#allura deserves better lowkey bc the way they were like “Oh she should fall for the space colonizer who lowkey fetishizes her culture”#They said “Yeah he wants to revise her people's history to fit her needs and she's INTO HIM” like stfu it is not even a little convincing#AND AND AND the way they just. Eradicate Olkarion and then PRETEND IT'S A NEW BEGINNING#prince lotor#vld lotor#lotor#Lotor pisses me off as a character bc he is so obviously flawed#Like he has this whole idealized version of what his role is#Like when he's like “I worked WITH the people we colonized” HOMIE YOU STILL COLONIZED THEM#THE FACT THAT THERE WERE COLLABORATORS TO YOUR REGIME DOESNT UNDO THAT#So help me god it would be a GOOD THING for a character to be like this BUT THE NARRATIVE REINFORCES IT#THEY NEVER BOTHER TO QUESTION IT#And again I am just. Like the fact is it would've BALLED OUT to question Voltron's role#“This superweapon has aligned itself with the colonial empire's status quo” AND THEY DON'T DO ANYTHING WITH THAT?#THE DOMESTIC TERRORISM ORGANIZATION GOT NEUTERED SO HARD TOO LIKE THE BLADES OF MARMALADE WERE REVOLUTIONARY ONCE#This show does NAWT care about revolution or liberation which like. WHY WRITE ABOUT A SPACE COLONIAL DOWNFALL WHEN YOU DON'T CARE#All those alien planets they allegedly free WE LEARN NOTHING#WHO ARE THEY#I WANT TO KNOW#Putting my headloss in the tags because I'm spiraling over this shit fr#keith kogane#lance mcclain#vld lance

Replication Error
#prototype 2009#alex mercer#prototype game#alex mercer prototype#my stuff#alex is imo more like a hybrid of human and virus rather than ''the virus''#bc despite his gory needs the way he thinks is much closer to human than anything we see from redlight#and viruses have no thinking capability or even existing as a colony on account of essentially being a springloaded key slash monkey wrench#so all that thinky human wetware must have been preserved or copied over into whatever the hell alex is made of#and yet it was copied terribly leading to his identity shenanigans

dear god, please take away at least a portion of my shame and self-doubt and give it to any of the numerous people who clearly need more of it, such as my FATHER!
#news from the cupola#hello everyone. just saw sinners. quite possibly one of the best films I have ever seen or will ever see.#my father (who also just watched it) however is reaching new heights of stupid.#I do not Profess to be Knowledgeable about the idea of folk music / folk dance as a tool of the colonial project but I know Some#(bc it's like. something I consider that I ought to be Thinking About as the kind of student of it and of history that I want to be)#my father however. what will it take to get any kind of nuanced thought about any of this (esp. wrt irish-american history) through his#head. apparently it is not doable even at his big age.#nonetheless he somehow managed to raise Me (altho some of that might be a) The Situation b) i read a lot c) the ocd/autism analyticality)#now that I have aired my grievances far more than I typically do on tumblr.horse I will shut up and look at some gifsets.#goodnight now everyone.

my hot take is that they should’ve made lotor bitchier but not evil.
#the Altean colony just felt like… HUH?#like manipulative 100% I could see that no questions no notes#but farming Alteans for quintessence when the Galra already had control over a majority of the universe bc daddy traumatized him#was left field and egregious and felt like shock factor for the sake of shock#Voltron#lotor

Question for Yellowjackets fans: Can someone point me towards or recommend some posts, or just other forms of material in general, that discuss how colonialism, or specifically aspects of it, are "shown" or "handled" within the show? I have some idea (with Mari, a visibly brown girl, being brutalized by a white girl whose motive was to claim power, while set in the Canadian wilderness), but I would love to hear others' thoughts as well, please.
#yellowjackets#yellowjackets critical#mari ibarra#shauna shipman#bc there are colonial aspects within the show that i haven't really seen addressed besides bits and pieces there#and i would love to find more especially with other characters#bc whether people want to admit it or not this show does have a problem with treatment of their poc characters#from killing all the characters of latin descent to having an indigenous girl be schizophrenic (with poor handling of it show wise) and have#a deep connection to the “dangerous” wilderness that her yte counterparts can't comprehend unless for their own gain (aka shauna)#and that's just some examples

when they've got interpreting spiderman noir under a specific cultural lens at the function [picture of me going insane]
I cant help myself.. what can i say. And since you've mentioned some research going on behind the scenes.. do you have any fun interpretations? Or even anything fun about the 1800s!

OH HI
Hm. I don't have anything as fun as historical dancing, but I suppose this does give me the excuse (thabk u) to blab about Noir's childishness.
(wow putting this under the cut bc it got longer than I thought it would LMAO)
I think what a lot of people (including Noir's contemporary writers and yes even the spiderverse interpretation) fall for when trying to read Noir's character is the imitation of his idea of what an adult is, that he hides behind. Like Noir's persona is incredibly exaggerated. He's playing pretend. Look here, he's practicing.
A lot of his persona as Noir is imitation! Imitation of his uncle, of Urich, of the violence he's been exposed to. He's running around in his uncle's old uniform. Fundamentally misunderstanding WHY his uncle had been ashamed of it and his role in the war.
And then he goes ahead and steals Urich's alias because it sounds Cool (which is such a teenage thing to do jesus christ).
But like that imitation of The Adult isn't something that's limited to that exaggerated persona that Noir encapsulates. Peter himself is trying So Hard to be grown up and tough and responsible that it loops back around to him being a brat who would try the three guys in a trench coat trick. He even gets beat up for it when trying to defend his aunt. And I mean I've posted about him being a brat.

About how he looks at Urich as a Prime Example of what a strong and knowledgeable adult is (which is part of why he reacts so volatile in response to Urich showing he's not exactly as morally righteous as himself, he's wounded and let down). Whiskey? Whiskey sounds like someone Mature and Cool would drink, I'll have it too. And then proceeds to throw his drink at Osborn and laugh about it. The illusion was broken for me then.
But well it's not broken for everyone. I mean like obviously I poked at the contemporary writers, but I'm more talking about the other characters in the narrative. Mainly Urich and Felicia.
Urich taking Peter under his wing isn't entirely under the motivation to nurture Peter. I think it Becomes that, but he's really envious of that kid. He wants to see him lose that hope that he once had (ruh roh the opposite thing happened, being around the kid made YOU more hopeful Ben. Guess you gotta be good. Hope you don't die now).
Urich really is exposing him to an extremely harsh reality, and taking him places where adults are typically only allowed. He's letting Peter get a glimpse into what it's like, which will eventually enable Noir's tool of violence. All these tests will accumulate into what Peter thinks someone powerful and strong can be and do.
Then his problematic relationship with Felicia (writers I'm malleting you for this). He's clinging to her adulthood and the safety she represents, and he's young but she sees some adult strength in him. I mean she trusts him with the blackmail Urich gave her, which she really. Shouldn't, even if that's what Urich wanted.
Anyway, strength is something she's been consistently drawn to her in her partners. Strength to feel as her own. Even if it's to hers and others' detriment. There's also a part of Peter that's drawn to Felicia because Urich was. He's still honing in the good parts of Urich he wants to be.
I think the one person in the narrative who doesn't fall for it? Is Aunt May. You could argue it's just her being naturally motherly, but for someone who was about to be eaten alive she's pretty frank with Noir. I think she can see that that violence and exaggerated grittiness comes from someone inexperienced and young. Even if she can't consciously recognize the similarities between Noir's persona and Peter's protectiveness of her. I don't think she wants to see that. I actually have a short comic script about that, but it probably will never see the light of day.
Ugh he's like a cat puffing up to scare away a predator. It's fake!!!!! It's all fake!!!!!! He gets intimidated by JJ, he never ties his shoes, gets powers and then immediately guns to beat the shit out of Osborn, sings about the sandman when he's getting his face bashed in, crawls to Felicia all pathetic and sad, and he made a costume to run over roofs at night in.
And it's funny how he's forcing himself to grow up, but also really sad because all the things he's being exposed to is already forcing him to grow up. He's witnessing things no kid should ever see or experience.
Then there's the time period to consider. The aftermath of WWI, being in the midst of the Great Depression, and WWII just around the corner. He's faced incredible hardship and is going to continue to face so much hardship, and he's going to mature faster than he ever should have. It should have made him crash and burn Hard when he became an adult, and to me he still does because I'm ignoring everyone after ewaof LMAO.
As for my research on the 1800s NY that's for my own spider iteration run I'm working on, so not too related to Noir until I reach the 30's :3
Hope that was satisfying!!
#tw grooming#critter talks#asks#the moots#fool!!!!!!#spider man noir#character analysis#abt the research like logically I know the typical new yorker isn't gonna know abt the specificities of the original dutch colony#and intricacies that the boom of industrialization had on lower class communities#but it's less about that and more of digging my hands into the Soul of NY#because NY is so Intertwined with any spider#so I'm starting from the Very beginning and digging my way up. man y'all were a hot mess#it's really fascinating though working my way through documentaries and books. the list is long and the dent I've made is about an 8th ASDF#anyway MAYBE y'all will see spiderman undiscovered one day...ask me abt it again if y'all like miles being a detective w a shoulder demon#for now it's me my 55 of world building slides several character note docs and a to read list of about 20 books long#would like to go to NY citay one day & oogle at the stinky subway draw some storefronts and people watch but thats not in the budget rn#also trying to look for movies n shows that aren't exaggerations of the culture so if anyone has recommendations DO @ me please#wanna do her justice bc I care about her#ALSO FOOL I'M SO SORRY FOR TAKING A DAY TO ANSWER#had to get my thoughts togther
