I think the like, most interesting and terrifying part of the last of us, is the people. I genuinely think that desperate humans. Will ALWAYS. Be scarier than any infected.
TW: death, violence, mentions of SA, mentions of pedophila. Mentions of cannibalism, please read with caution!! Love you all <3
TLOU part 1 spoilers!!
Like I said, the infected are. Definitely terrifying. But I think that the humans. Are scarier,
Let’s take David, for an example. (This is not excusing his actions. Fuck David.) he, from what I can tell, was a by all means. Survivor. He had people he cared for and kept safe. He had woman and children that he fed. Housed and protected . But, eventually desperatation got to him, the constant burden got to him.
(again. NOT excusing his actions, he is disgusting.) he became, a monster, an absolute foul human. He says it himself too. He talks about how he didn’t used to be like how he was, and that’s what’s terrifying. The apocalypse changed him. More than any infection changed the victims who were bitten.
Another example. Is Joel. And I think it’s even more clear with him (because we actually see him before the apocalypse). How 20 years of surviving by any means possible. How desperation. Fear and anger induced by an apocalypse, changes a person.
We see this as in the 2013 flashback, Joel is soft. He’s sweet. He cares so much about his baby. He’s tired, sure. But he’s happy. And the time skip almost gives us whiplash on how different he is, he’s hardened. The only glimpse of who he used to be was his interactions with Tess. And even so, he was always closed off.
He tells us that he’d done back things. That Tommy has literal nightmares. From how Joel used to be in the first 10 years of the apocalypse. When he was most desperate and most angry. How he’s robbed, been robbed. How he hit his brother and more stuff we don’t even get to see! The apocalypse turned him into a whole different and more violent person (not as bad as David. I’d say it’s because of the fact David. Is awful to begin with. And the fact David had a much bigger burden to carry.)
Nobody shows kindness . Nobody spares each other. It’s a free for all. Because nobody trusts who they, or others have become. How nobody is good. How infected and other human beings. Hold the same hostility.
We see Ellie start to realise this as the game progresses. How she starts to slowly lose hope and faith in people as they are consistently under threat. From people more than an infected.I think David really hammers home for her what people are really like. Which I this is a realisation that everyone comes to. Before becoming as hostile as the people who are hostile to them it’s a cycle!
And that’s what scary. Like. How people will turn on eachother because nobody trusts others. And everyone’s desperate. Everyone’s hungry. And there’s not enough for everyone to eat.
Idk. Just a ramble. Sorry if it dosnt make sense!!
(I finished the first game. I am 10 minutes into the second and I’ve already SOBBED, someone help me.)
