not really a headcanon, but i decided to browse the perseus digital library ( because i’m a Fun Person ) and compile all of my favorite mentions of the furies i could find :
❝ in black garments, like the assistants at a funeral ❞ ( cic. vat. 13 )
❝ but the impure are not permitted to approach the pure or each other, but are bound by the furies in bonds unbreakable ❞ ( dio. liv. 8.1 )
❝ furies’ hairs / uncoil their serpents at the sound ? ❞ ( hor. od. 2.13 )
❝ night - begot, implacable, / terrific furies. they did sit before / the prison portals, adamant confined, / combing black vipers from their horrid hair ❞ ( ov. met. 4.416 )
❝ persecuted with the whips and burning torches of the furies ❞ ( suet. nero 34 )
❝ do not shake at me those maidens with their bloodshot eyes and snaky hair ❞ ( eur. orest. 256 )
❝ they will kill me, the hounds of hell, death's priestesses with glaring eyes, the dreadful goddesses ❞ ( eur. orest. 256 )
one day i’ll have the energy to write a coherent headcanon incorporating all of these details into how i consider my portrayal of meg, but today is not that day.
UPDATE BASED ON THE TAGS : i literally forgot the orphic hymns exist wtf !! the furies even get two !!
LXVIII. TO THE FURIES ( ERINYES )
❝ revenge and sorrows dire to you belong, hid in a savage veil, severe and strong, / terrific virgins, who forever dwell endu’d with various forms, in deepest hell ; / aerial, and unseen by human kind, and swiftly coursing, rapid as the mind. ❞
LXIX. TO THE FURIES ( EUMENIDES )
❝ illustrious furies, mighty nam’d, terrific pow’rs, for prudent counsel fam’d ; ❞
❝ whose piercing sight, with vision unconfin'd, surveys the deeds of all the impious kind : / on fate attendant, punishing the race ( with wrath severe ) of deeds unjust and base. / dark - colour’d queens, whose glittering eyes, are bright with dreadful, radiant, life - destroying, light : / eternal rulers, terrible and strong, to whom revenge, and tortures dire belong ; / fatal and horrid to the human sight, with snaky tresses wand’ring in the night ; ❞
#❛ ‣ 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍.#this is the struggle of picking a mythological figure that doesn't have any like .. dedicated literature#no homeric hymn to the erinyes unfortunately :(#i would eventually like to write a headcanon about how mortals perceive meg while she's on the surface#or how the shades in tartarus perceive her (especially when she's working)#bc hades makes her so Beautiful but mortals (me) should be terrified rather than turned on
